"It's wicked crazy awesome. Seriously, I'm not just saying that. Try it and you will know what I'm talking about. This is probably the coolest thing I've seen on the web in a long time. It makes the rest of the pack look like it was written by a kindergartner."

My verdict which apparently is so very important - plurk will do more for twitter than anything else recently and will remind us ingratiates why we loved it in the first place.

I can't get their stupid timeline to show up in firefox on my mac (though it works on safari & firefox on my windows laptop). Not worth using safari just for that. :-/
- Bob
you know, I agreed with you until I used the mobile site on the browser on my treo tonight - then I was blown away... fabulous for conversations - blows FF & Twitter out of the water in that aspect. Seriously - I was kind of surprised.
- Lucretia Pruitt
@lucretia is right. i use http://plurk.com/m in the sidebar. also check the group feature.
- kosmar
Plurk will probably end up being the MySpace of micro-blogging services - and that is not a bad place to be. Great implementation IMHO.
- Aviv
Wow, Neopets? Been ages since I've thought about it... Comparing Plurk to it never occurred to me.
- Voyagerfan5761
its just who you follow. you wont see the myspacey customized or teeny user part of it, when you dont add them. also ist not likely to browse on anywhere else than your own customized page.
- kosmar
Was not impressed with Plurk at all. I must agree it was to weird for everyday use. Good luck Plurk.
- Admiral70
I resemble that remark! Think I'll err on the Tamagotchi side, though ...
- Ashton
I had to go back a few times before liking it a nice twhirl-like client would be good though
- Sebbe D'Hose
It's hard to say. It might get a different Twitter-sized audience. The audience isn't us, that's for sure. And they do need to take a few barriers to use down though in order to get really viral. The lack of an API is also a major issue.
- Dion Hinchcliffe
from twhirl
at least you can conjugate plurk like a regular verb. with twitter i usually felt stupid trying to come up with a verb form ("he, uh, twittered") and there was the whole "twitter/tweet" thing for the noun. whereas a plurk is a plurk is a plurk.
- Karim
That's right, considering all the silly names we've been seeing in the past few years, Plurk is a brilliant pick and I think it'll be a key contributor to its [potential] success in becoming the MySpace of micro-blogging services, as well as attracting its intended audience (yes, all those 14 year olds currently populating the service).
- Aviv
Robert, at the end of the day, 14 year old Plurkers simply don't have the same expectations as Twitter super-users and tech geek early-adopters. If Plurk goes down for 30 minutes, they'll happily turn on their Tivo and try again after a Hannah Montana fix.

I just paid $72 (smaller tank) to fill up. A personal high.
- Dave Winer
Gas is $3.79 in Boulder, and the bus system and the bike paths are great.
- susan mernit
usually the tank cuts off at$75 because that's all the pump will let me have. But I entered in the wrong zip code with my credit card accidently so they made me go inside the station where I guess there is no $75 limit. I've never understood that $75 limit anyways, it always seemed dumb to me.
- Thomas Hawk
It's about $4.45/gallon here. I'd have to pay more than you, except my gas tank is only 13 gallons.
- Raoul Pop
My $77 the other day was the most for me . . . the only good thing in NJ is the relatively low gasoline tax. Of course, it is still more than the oil companies make per gallon
- Batona
Holy crap. Down here in Venezuela, that would have cost me $4.82. Probably one of the few good things about living in this shithole.
- Guillermo Esteves
Haha, Jeevan, not a tank, but close, it's a Chevrolet Suburban. I feel bad a lot about driving such a gas guzzler, but we've got 4 kids and 2 dogs and not many cars work for our family. We try to drive as little as we can and I always either take public transportation or casual carpool into the City.
- Thomas Hawk
whoa!!!! What are you driving?? How are kids earning minimum wage affording this?? Our driving culture is finished.
- Joe Mac Stevens
Same here Thomas, I can't put more than 75 bucks in if I use a credit card
- Kenneth LeFebvre
How much is gas in Venezuela, Guillermo? (FYI, we're at about $1.32/L, or approx. $5.28/gal here in Winnipeg today)
- Trent Olson
I pais $55.11 for 13.5 gallons in Portland today. Good thing my daily commute is less than 4 mi.
- Alex C. Williams
from Alert Thingy
what da hell... Time to get rid of that car!
- Bai orane sato
The price has gone up about $.30 a gallon in the last 2 weeks or so I think. Bai orane sato, we need a big car for the four kids and 2 dogs. But a friend was also telling me the other day that sometimes it's better to keep driving a less efficient car than to ditch it and buy a hybrid due to the environmental impact of manufacturing a hybrid.
- Thomas Hawk
no "Bai orane sato"... time to get rid of that gas!
- Xavier Donat
Yeow. Mine is about $65. I rarely drive, so it lasts a bit. Of course, with the turbo and my lead foot "a bit" is not so long. Oops.
- lisa-k
I paid $3.99 a gallon this afernoon and stopped after about 5 because it was just too depressing to watch.
- R. Ferguson
I still think gas is too cheap. Maybe when it's $6 or $10 a gallon people will seriously consider alternatives.
- TranceMist
@Trent, it's been at that price for the past 10 years, subsidized by the government.
- Guillermo Esteves
Saw $4.89 premium here in LA today. Setting aside massive demand destruction, which seems frighteningly unlikely, the upward trend is not going to stop.
- Anthony Citrano
Sorry to rub it in but I love my Prius. I get 400 miles to the 10 gallon tank!
- Steve Rubel
I pay the equivalent of $11 a gallon or so - as does most of Europe. It's not really affected us much...
- Simon Bisson
from Alert Thingy
Easy access to relatively cheap energy is what has allowed the R&D and technology sectores of the US to thrive - and should be a major priority goign foraward. Destrying the economy to try and force "alternatives" is just silly. Maybe if the "environmentalists" hadn't been shutting down the nuke industry for 30 years we woudl be better off huh? :)

Oil is only a small part of the cheap energy story. Gas and coal play a much bigger part.

Try paying for the full tank of a Suburban!!!! :( I don't like SUV's no more.
- americanm
Thomas - There was an article in the newest (I think) Wired magazine that talks about how much worse it is to buy a new hybrid for that reason. I think they said you'd be better off buying an '87 Tercel, at least as far as environmental impact goes.
- Bob
I'm just happy I have a company gas card. With the amount of driving I do, I'd have to quit if they didn't pay for it. Gas shouldn't cost more than groceries.
- Bob
That's about what we're paying to fill up our Avalanche. It's frickin' brutal, but there's not much to be done about it at the moment.
- Roger Benningfield
amatours...just paid 77 euros for my car (47 liters)... euros ok? not dollars... :(
- Luigi Centenaro
Oh my god... Just a few years ago, gas dropped briefly to $0.99 in California, just north of Los Angeles on my trips between to LA & SF. Used to be a $12 trip ($25 RT), now maybe $50-60 ($100-120 RT). Airline tickets might be the way to go... Last time I filled up for below $3/gal in SF was 2/8/08 ($2.99 at Arco in Marin). Collection of gas photos from past 3 weeks http://friendfeed.com/e...
- Mitchell Tsai
$ Saving Tips: Bike where possible. Take the transit for distances. Get a motorcycle if you're single. Car pool. Get a small car even for families (you don't need a Suburban; leave the dogs at home). Drive slow, don't step on it. Inflate your tires. Maintain your car under the hood.
- Mohamed J
Thomas: Cheapest SF gas now is $4.17. I just filled up again... Re: environmental impact of car: Cost of gas still pales next to cost of a new car. For me, 12,000 miles/yr x $0.16/mile = $1,900/yr in gas (used to be $500/yr). Cost of a new car ($3,000-7,000+/yr) plus increased insurance ($300-3,000+/yr) still dwarfs the gas cost, and the envionmental cost is bad. That's why I still drive my 1992 Acura Integra (22-32 mpg).

Leo - you hit right on the head: Twitter's problems are due to application and database structure problems!
- Susan Beebe
I suspect the problem is people -- lack of competent management -- it's not like there hasn't been time and opportunity to solve these problems. Ev, Biz et al may be nice guys but it looks like they are not up to the job.
- Brian Sullivan
The point is not to raise money, but to limit traffic. Some states are letting single drivers buy their way into the HOV lanes.
- Michael Markman
architecture issues are hard to solve, esp with a running service. Like changing the tire on a moving car.
- Dave Hodson
I think it's as much a people problem as it is a technology problem....via feedalizr
- Mack D. Male
Dave: Obviously you can't change tires on a moving car. Plan, stop the car, change the tires -- it's not like the service has a high uptime anyway. They do this all the time in car racing.
- Brian Sullivan
Why not build a new site in parallel? Don't change tires on a moving car! Build a spare.
