Even before Facebook Inc. goes public, Silicon Valley is experiencing a surge in jobs and per-capita income, in contrast to the weak economic situation dogging the rest of the nation. According to a new closely watched report on Silicon Valley that came out Tuesday, the region added a total of 42,000 jobs last year, up 3.8% from 2010 and bringing the area's workforce back to its 2006 and 2007 levels of 1.2 million people. The job growth, which was largely fueled by the technology industry, was faster than the 1.1% increase elsewhere in the nation. The annual report is compiled by nonprofits Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
