I think movie audio will all be 7.1 but probably a limited offering in music.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Mark, when do you think most movie audio will be 7.1? I'm thinking 99% of blu-ray is 5.1 now, but I could be wrong.
- Cristo
I found this list of content releases for 7.1 (and other) audio formats: http://price-adjustment.com/BLURAY-.... There's more than I thought. Now that I know the Jonas Brothers concert is in 7.1, I'm definitely building out a 7.1 home theater. ;) The new Star Trek movie, however appears to be in 5.1.
- Cristo
I've wondered about this too, great find on the link posted! I'm surprised there is that much available. I wonder if its studio-specific?
- jcunwired
Also interesting in the list, there is a good bit more content in DTS format than Dolby, I would have thought overwhelmingly the other way around.
- jcunwired
That kind of surprises me. Most theaters have side speakers. It seems odd not to take full advantage of them for a sense of emersion.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
from fftogo
5.1 has side speakers. 5.1 = 3 front, 2 side, 1 back, 1 sub. 7.1 = 3 front, 2 side, 2 back, 1 sub. Really the difference between the two is nominal, so a lot of audio engineers might think it's not worth the time to encode a DVD in 7.1. A good receiver will artificially create 7.1 from a 5.1 DVD or Blu-Ray pretty well.
- Luke Stay
My two cents: If your A/V receiver already supports 7.1, I say why not use it. Surround speakers are typically much cheaper than their usually larger counterparts. Honestly though, most people probably won't notice much of a difference, especially if they're not using digital, optical, or HDMI audio. Standard RCA will never give you the full DTS/Dolby experience.
- Luke Stay
Can't say but 7 speakers would look ridiculous in my small family room.
- Rodfather
Rodfather, but they would sound AMAZING! :)
- Luke Stay
sorry, just realized my math doesn't add up. I was thinking 6.1 for some reason. Disregard my previous comments. There is a HUGE difference between 5.1 and 7.1. The side speakers make all the difference. Even if the DVD/Blu-Ray is not encoded in 7.1, the receiver will be able to fix it pretty well. I say at least go for 6.1.
- Luke Stay
The reason I'm asking is that I found a 10 channel preamp/amplifier that can drive two 5.1 surround sound zones. If I'm not sacrificing much, I think that would be super cool. So far, I don't think I'd be losing much. Maybe I can set it up to do 7.1 (or 7.2) when I'm not using the second zone at the same time.
- Cristo
If you can do that, I say go for it, but having the option for 7.1 in your main viewing area is well worth it.
- Luke Stay
Luke, the two statements you made are somewhat opposite. The real question is, if you had to make a choice between 2 x 5.1/2 synchronized setups or two separate 5/7.1/2 setups, which would you choose? Keep in mind, if you have separate setups going at the same time, they may well be offset from each other and thus there will be a very annoying echo. It's too bad they don't have anything that offers 12 surround sound channels for an amp instead of 10.
- Cristo
How long is the run to the other zone?
- Luke Stay
They are both about 30 feet away from the media closet.
- Cristo
earthquake makes a 16-channel one.... it just depends on how much you want to spend on an amp. actually the system my ex-girlfriend runs in a local amphitheater is 256 channel. :P
- mjc
Ideally, I would do two separate setups just so I could have the 7.1 in my main viewing area. If you can send HDMI out to the second setup, there shouldn't be much of a delay within the same house. That option, however is very expensive, and the cost may not be worth it to you. See if you can find a high end home theater store that will let you sample the difference between the two and decide if it's worth the cost.
- Luke Stay
Luke, there is already a delay with different HDMI dests in my house. It's the speed of the processing by the dest device. Multiple A/V receivers is much cheaper than this dual-surround sound preamp/amp.
- Cristo
Personally, I don't care much about my second zone. I run my second feed through a VCR, converting the signal to coax to use throughout the house. For me it's a matter of where I do most of my movie watching/music listening since I'm the only one that cares in my house.
- Luke Stay
Books? Try video games. Now, if that dumb ol' girl will get out of the way, I think that's a vintage copy of halo behind her . . . WHAT?!?

Ok I admit it, I do not understand the appeal of Lady Ga Ga. I don't find her look to be that interesting, and I'm not a fan of the music I've heard. I'm glad others like her, I just don't get why.
I'd been ambivalent until I heard "Bad Romance," which for some reason I loved. Weirdly, I now like some of her other stuff better as well. No rational explanation there.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I don't get her look at all, but some of her songs are starting to grow on me.
- Penguin It's Cold Outside
Haven't heard a song but from what I've seen teh gayz like her. Just not this one.
- Derrick
I'd have to admit, some of her tunes are catchy and she does have skills. No hate from me.
- Rodfather
i hear that she's actually a good musician that paid her dues and stuff.
- Morgan Haley
I intensely dislike her music and don't get what the appeal is. That said, I'm not on a crusade or anything.
- Chieze Okoye
I don't hate her, I just don't get what the appeal is. I suppose it is just a matter of her style not fitting my taste.
- Joe Pierce
i can't stand her look and want her to wash her face and put on jeans and a t-shirt. friends love her. i don't hate her, but I do like that dumb poker face song
- Baroness Von SmashAHomie
I think I like her because she is so confounding.
- WorldofHiglet
she is hard for me to look at and listen to. but i get the appeal. she (and her production) is the epitome of modern pop music. 99% of the pop artists out there wish they had her hooks. i cant stand her work but i get the appeal. here, wash yourself off with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch... its hard for me to deal with the fact that this is the same person.
- Carlos Ayala
Carlos: yes, she is actually incredibly talented and not a studio-packaged cypher. More reason to like her :)
- WorldofHiglet
Madonna and Marilyn Manson's love child. That's how I like to think of her. Although, I should really give Marilyn Manson more respect than that.
- Josh Haley
I have somehow managed to avoid her music (why yes, I do live under a rock), but I saw a clip of her interview on Ellen and she was kind of sweet, actually. Said she felt like a freak in High School. Maybe all artists say that.
- Laura Norvig
from iPod
Josh, I'd actually much rather sit through an entire Ga Ga concert than just one Marilyn Manson song. I'm on the edge with Madonna...ever since she massacred that Bond theme.
- Joe Pierce
Nah, Marilyn's got some skills. He just takes the avant-garde approach to showmanship to ridiculous levels. He's actually a very smart and down to earth guy from what I know. As far as music, I liked his tunes from the Matrix, at least.
- Josh Haley
intelligent I may go with, down to Earth, not in the interviews and appearances I've seen. Especially on Loveline where he gave out advice that could be considered damaging. Manson is one of the very few "entertainers" in the world who if I met them I would have to try very hard not to punch in the face.
- Joe Pierce
Yeah, it's not even good electronic.
- Alex Scoble
I harbor the same confusion. I think she's probably a sweetheart whose friends propelled her to stardom.
- PurpleZoe
I'm with ya, Joe. I enjoy some pop so I think some of her songs are ok but I also don't have a thing for her in general. I'm all about artistic expression but something about her style comes off desperate to me for some reason. No hate though... she can go on and do her thang. I'm happy for her that she has so many obsessed fans. Just not exactly my cup of tea.

Driving an SUV with 4WD does not mean that you can drive in these conditions like you normally would. The commercials lie! Plus - hello - high wind warning means high profile vehicles like that beast you drive can get pushed around. #peopleareidiots#happyidriveacar
It's amazing how many people seem to think that having 4WD means that they are invincible when they drive through the snow and ice.
- Katy S
Ads definitely set the wrong expectations, I see more 4x4 vehicles wrecked than other cars in snow and ice storms. The biggest problem I see is people in ice flipping on 4WD, which is a nightmare waiting to happen. Nothing beats a lot of experience in hazardous driving conditions, regardless of how many wheels are spinning under you. A little common sense doesn't hurt either. While I...

- Jason Huebel
@MVB, I'm aware of that. But this is the *Senate Majority Leader*. He speaks for his Senate colleagues. I can only hope there is a strong backlash from /everyone/ in the Senate to these remarks.
- Jason Huebel
I understand what you mean, Jason, and I share your belief of fiscal sanity. However, no one is going to rebuke him publicly. It would be out of fashion.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
This guy really went too far. That's a shame, but this alone doesn't shake my support for health care reform. We need to do something. I know that the whole effort just got neutered, though, by the removal of the public option.
- Kamilah Gill
The other side of the argument is that Republicans have made a few hyperbolic statements as well. Still, two wrongs, and all.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Except he didn't compare opponents of Health Care Reform to supporters of slavery. What he said was that conservatives have traditionally been opposed to change and reform--for example, on ending slavery. But of course, that's not how Fox Not-Really-News would report it, because they have an obvious & deliberate anti-Democrat, anti-liberal agenda.
- josh neff, geek at large
That's a pretty lame equation. It's up there with the "Nazis made people wear flair" argument in office space.
- Jeremy (cropmarks)
@josh, ummmm... Southern Democrats were pro-slavery back in the 1850-60's (Northern Dems believed that slavery was a policy issue at the local level), so Harry Reid's comment fails on a couple of levels. I realize that the Democratic Party of today is completely different than that of the 1850's, but using slavery as an analogy when his own party supported slavery historically is hypocritical.
- Jason Huebel
I'm not saying it's a great analogy (& the whole slavery issue was only part of what he talked about) & I'm definitely not a fan of Reid. I'm just saying Fox is distorting what was said & that he wasn't actually equating opponents of Health Care Reform with racist pro-slavery people.
- josh neff, geek at large
That said, our elected leaders have thoroughly screwed up the current legislation anyway. It's looking more and more likely that lobbyists have derailed healthcare reform (again) and we'll just end up with more expensive healthcare anyway. So we'll end up spending a trillion dollars on this healthcare reform, then still end up paying more out-of-pocket for healthcare coverage than before. Sad.

You don't talk them into doing anything. You still have to go through the signup process if you get a card. What the app does is scan the card in for you AFTER you get it, thus allowing you to leave it at home and off your keychain. That way the next time you're checking out and they ask for a rewards card, all you have to do is bring up the barcode on your handset's screen

Because it's not something they've ever done before. Have you tried this? Do store clerks generally shrug and scan it and say "it works, so that's fine"? I went to Best Buy today to get the 65" Panasonic plasma. While I was there, I saw the Z1 I bought last month is now on sale for $4k vs $5.5k. I was bummed, and asked the manager if they had a policy for that, and he said they would refund if the purchase was within 30 days. It turns out I bought it 37 days ago, but they refunded the difference anyway!
- Cristo
Wait - there's a 65" Z1 now? Once my kitchen remodel is done I was going to get a 65" V10, but might have to rethink it now...
- jcunwired
Nice! Hey, let us know what you think of the 65" please, I'm strongly considering it.
- LogEx
Say what? I went back there at 31 days when they dropped the price of my TV from $2200 to $2000 and they wouldn't give me the difference...very lame.
- Alex Scoble
LogEx, the 65" is the V10. There is no 65" Z1 yet that I know of.
- Cristo
Alex, that sucks. I just stared at the manager for a long time (like more than a minute), and he finally gave me the discount.
- Cristo
Right, it's the 65" V10 I'm looking at. My only hesitation is the light control in the room it's destined for.
- LogEx
Ahh, got it. Good, 'cause I'd rather not spend the extra $1k or so.
- jcunwired
Oh, okay. I guess I should have replied to jcunwired. Anyway, I already saw at the store that the Z1 has a better picture, but there's not much alternative in the 65" category. I can control light in my area, so I'm not worried about that.
- Cristo
Anyhow, cool that you got your refund...if the differential had been $1500 I would have stayed there all day until they gave me a refund.
- Alex Scoble
Oddly there's very little alternative in this category, while only a few years ago it was the sweet spot. Since I haven't seen a single bad review of Panasonic's most recent plasmas, I'm not too concerned about the lack of choices.
- jcunwired
Someone should bill these companies for all the time wasted by these activities and macro programing systems. This could be so much better. Too bad there's probably no money in it.
- Cristo
No money in it? Because these guys aren't selling millions of dollars worth of remotes now? You make a remote that's easy to program for the layman (means no Python or Javascript) and you could make bank.
- Alex Scoble
I'm not interested in making a remote that's easy to program by the layman. It's called programming for a reason. And it doesn't have the kind of money in it that I'm interested in making.
- Cristo
Yes, there's no money in making a remote that you can program with Python or Javascript.
- Alex Scoble
That's why all the Python and Javascript programmers create websites you use instead.

Out of interest... What would you program it to do?
- Johnny Worthington
I would program it to drive my loft, of course. Where have you been Johnny? :)

"Welcome to the Concordance homepage. This software will allow you to program your Logitech Harmony universal remote control! In addition to providing software that works in UNIX (which logitech's software doesn't support), our code also aims to be cross-platform. So you can use the same program in Linux or Windows, and hopefully soon, Mac too! We currently support all models except for the 890 and 1000. Support for these will hopefully come soon though." -- http://www.phildev.net/harmony...
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken, interesting. I wonder if you can program it in a different way then their 'activity model', which I find kind of sucky. Also, I have the 890, so this wouldn't help me right now.
- Cristo
I'm currently "programming" the URC R-50, and I put programming in quotes for a reason. :(
- Cristo
What I want in a remote control is room based. You can choose a room from the main menu, and then drive devices (or activities if you like) from there. Furthermore, I want technology to determine your default room for you, based on the remote control's location. I still want to be able to control other rooms sources and displays though if I choose.
- Cristo
I haven't used Concordance, but I sure know what you mean, having gone through a 550 and 880 before just reverting back to individual component remotes. Anything that would let me just tell it what to do by editing and pushing a text file would be godsend.
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken, yes! The whole idea of programming is saving time. When you program in today's world, you don't retype the program every time you want to change something. You back it up, even source control it, so you know when or who caused the mistake.
- Cristo
I think if I were going to tackle another remote, I'd eBay a Nokia N810 and try out http://www.mceguru.com But that project seems pretty dated these days.
- Ken Sheppardson
In practice, it doesn't work that well. You need a few things, like instant on, and having it automatically running the remote control app. Plus, touch screens don't work that well for frequently used media controls in my experience.
- Cristo
Yeah, I really can't imagine any screen-based remote is going to give you stuff like intuitive 30-sec skip on your DVR. Seems like one could put together a neat little system by having a PC drive the components, then have the remote trigger events in the PC software. Particularly if you could just take any cheap, off the shelf universal remote and just have it trigger the PC.
- Ken Sheppardson
I have a Harmony 1000, and it has a touchscreen plus remappable hard buttons. I thought I'd hate it (only got it because my wife preferred it to the harmony remotes with more hard buttons), but it hasn't been bad. One of the hard buttons would be perfect for a 30 second skip.
- Nick Lothian
Nick, my motivation for writing system software for my own purposes is fairly low. When you throw hardware and industrial design into the mix, it is barely measurable. I'm excited about quick scripting I can do to save time for myself and family, but otherwise I'm motivated by reaching a lot of people and I'm not that interested in universal remote controls as a business. :)
- Cristo
Nick, I had a Harmony 1100 (which is the next model from the 1000). I returned it. I currently have a Harmony 890 (One), and a Universal Remote Control R-50. They may both be returned soon.
- Cristo
Fair enough - I don't think I'd be up for the hardware build either. Have you tried any phone based remotes? In theory there should be some decent ones which could also do uPNP/dlna control. When I took a look a year or so ago the uPNP stuff sucked pretty badly (which was what I was interested in at the time)
- Nick Lothian
If you know how to program already, programming these remotes is particularly painful. You can choose between the braindead activity based, pseudo web program that Harmony uses, or you can choose the remedial visual macro based mechanism that URC uses. Both are bad, time consuming, and limiting.
- Cristo
Nick, I've done custom uPnP programming for Sonos control on mobile phones. As I said earlier, touch-based screens are not ideal for driving media devices when skipping commercials, rewinding, fast-forwarding, changing channels, muting, and volume changes are frequent.
- Cristo
This thread makes me think about building an Arduino based remote.
