The stats seem to say that TechCrunch got removed from Twitter's Suggested User List. I'm off to check it out with a new account. Is this punishment for TwitterGate? Sure seems so.
- Robert Scoble
Probably wise from a pr kind of standpoint. Maybe Twitter had to step up to leaking material or they closed somekind of deal with TC
- Michiel Sikkes
from iPhone
Michiel: that you know of. Lots of big brands are on the SUL. We don't know the kind of deal they made to get on the SUL. For instance, Cisco provided a lot of "support" during the latest outage. Is that why Cisco's CTO is there? We'll never know because this list is totally biased and totally at Twitter's whim.
- Robert Scoble
They are losing several hundred followers a day
- Mark
the whole recommended user list should really have a little more end user input and maybe some or other qualifying criteria.
- nathan
Robert: So it's even more likely they closed a deal because there is no transparency. "Publish but we will remove you from the list"
- Michiel Sikkes
from iPhone
nathan: the whole suggested user list should be done away with, but the damage is done. Before @techcrunch was put on the list I had more followers than it did.
- Robert Scoble
Michiel: well, now, it sure seems a lot more likely that no deal was really reached.
- Robert Scoble
And, by the way, TechCrunch's credibility just went up in my eyes because they did something that got them taken off of the list. I know I never trust anything someone says on this list when they talk about Twitter. It's like they got a $250,000 gift. Would you believe anything someone said about me if I handed out $250,000 gifts to all of them?
- Robert Scoble
I was thinking more along the lines of recommended user of the month or something like, most influential user, recommended by the twitterverse...
- nathan
Techcrunch probably knew that they would be taken out of the list if they published it and still they did it. Wonder how many people would really do that?
- Sumanth Kolar
I think that twitter should work on some form of TEO or something that automatically grades accounts.
- nathan
I would tend to agree, TechCrunch's cred would go up, but they're also drawing additional attention to twitter.
- nathan
Sumanth: not many, I'm sure. Mashable has switched its business to be almost entirely about Twitter.
- Robert Scoble
Mashable had an entire series around retweeting. Why? Because people retweet Mashable constantly.
- Louis Gray
How do you get on the suggested user list anyhow?
- Eric
Louis -- it's amazing how many retweets Mashable gets, I wonder how many people are on their 'zombie retweet' list... there's a form on Mashable.com (or used to be) where you could give them your Twitter creds and they'd auto-RT anything @mashable sent out.
- Jonathan Coffman
Jonathan: I never knew that. Is it still there?
- Jalada
So Twitter now sensors or did Michael Arington peeve someone off again...
- Rob Cairns
Can you blame Twitter? My take on Twittergate was that it was a fairly shady move by Techcrunch/Arrington. They would have gotten much more mileage if they would have worked with Twitter, gotten consensus, and then developed the story.
- Matt Martin
Eric: most of the things on Twitter's Suggested User List are now brands. So, get on the list by creating a brand. Other than that? I heard bringing them cupcakes works.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, Allen Stern says that doesn't work any more
- Jesse Stay
Totally agree, I like the competition but the last time I evaluated all the big players there really wasn't much innovation happening. Also, metrics just aren't too useful yet.
- Jonathan Coffman
It's weird how some services offer capability to post to just a few "social media" sites and exclude others and also weird how some just post the URL with no text or title.
- James
Tried it. After 1000 or so, I decided that it wasn't worth the time and effort.
- Mark Davidson
from BuddyFeed
Yikes, I believe it. Every once in a while I'll go through a few pages of my followers and clean out spammers/bots, but it's never-ending.
- Jonathan Coffman
from email
But I do my links very specifically. I WANT you to read the comments and PARTICIPATE!!!
- Robert Scoble
Not to mention that when you do that, you are adding metadata that helps the new real time search features that are MUCH BETTER here on FriendFeed than are over on Twitter.
- Robert Scoble
Gee, with mine, the complaint was the extra level of clicking to get to a news item I had aggregated in Friendfeed and relayed to Twitter.
- George Hall (Australia)
That is something you can't do in Twitter.
- Robert Scoble
Also, in Twitter, you can't see real time, so you can't "chat" with other people about the topic under hand. Hi George, yeah, I get that complaint once in a while too.
- Robert Scoble
My Twitter followers didn't like so many news links aggregated and piped over to Twitter all coming at once (10 at a time).
- George Hall (Australia)
Agreed, seeing the comments "up top" along with the content is very valuable (at least in FriendFeed's current implementation!)
- Jonathan Coffman
net: I wish he'd come here and engage with us about why he doesn't get this.
- Robert Scoble
he is sitting beside me - oh no he taking over my keyboard
- net
Quite a few advantages to Friendfeed, just some Twitter users haven't quite adapted to it yet.
- George Hall (Australia)
In fact, I wish anyone who sits on Twitter and doesn't get FriendFeed would come here and explain why they don't get it.
- Robert Scoble
It's like melons. I refuse to try them, even though I might like them. Getting them to come over here and checking this place out is hard.
- Mark
he's is part of the ScreenJelly crew launching next week
- net
Keep rocking Rob! FF is THE place to interact better with comments.
- Fer Isella
Oh well, at least my Friendfeed subscribers still get to read news links from Australian news.com.au and Australian ABC news right here.
- George Hall (Australia)
I use twitter exclusively on iphone, opening a friendfeed link is painful
- Sylvain Rebaud
(I'm lazy, gotta make it easy for me).
- Robert Scoble
FF should fix that link thing too so it hyperlinks www not just http
- Mark
I needed something interesting to read on FF before I finally created a FF account. This only happened after someone I followed mentioned Scoble then I followed Scoble and then he mentioned he was going to be on Stategy Room so I watched that. Then more of Scobble's links to FF and chat happened so I create an account and could participate
- Nicholas Orr
the founder wants to show it to you next week - and then you can explain the value of ff over twitter
- net
net: I will be in London next week unfortunately.
- Robert Scoble
I am surprised you saw and responded to my post ;-)
- Sylvain Rebaud
Sylvain: here in FriendFeed you can put your friends into lists. So you can have lists with lots of people and lists with just a few.
- Robert Scoble
Actually, since buddyfeed is the only iphone client for friendfeed which doesn't crash all the time, I use the web browser on the iphone to read FF. Never have a problem with the links at all.
- George Hall (Australia)
WTH, everything I type in FF goes to twitter !!!
- Sylvain Rebaud
Mark: Steve Jobs has me wrapped around his little finger.
- Robert Scoble
Sylvain: you gotta change that in the settings here. I don't have mine going over to Twitter.
- Robert Scoble
Sylvain: because my style of using FriendFeed is to link to comments. I think the comments actually add more value than the source articles a lot of times.
- Robert Scoble
Is sharing only FriendFeed posts preferred to sharing comments as well? In Twitter, @replies are hidden from the main feed, is it worrying to contradict this practice?
- Mike Chelen
I'd admit it...I was getting a little misty-eyed. Hard not to.
- CAJ, somewhere else
When will Simon Cowell bag the ugly ass haircut?
- Alex Scoble
I love these things. Worth watching.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, agreed. I wish the iphone had the ability to send a link to a youtube video quickly so this could be sent to my daughters today
- LPH™ and his dog P™
I wish they tuned down the audience a bit... Could barely hear her at times
- Mark Philpot
this lady certainly has a voice! good for her i say for being brave. :)
- Tatty Gibson
OMG, I'm in tears here. That was lovely and wow that song with all that. Had to favorite it. </sentimental wimp>
- Anika
Is good to see what nature can do. Incredible voice!
- Rafael
That's a magnificent clip, I wish America's Got Talent was so entertaining and surprising.
- Jonathan Coffman
i watched this last night, love her! Her voice is a true gift.
- Laura Zickus
Thanks for sharing that - perfect for this time of year
- Jesse Stay
She's this year's Paul Potts. Great voices, the pair of them.
- Mark H
That was just amazing. And the perfect song for both her situation and to start the waterworks. Now i have to follow the show and see if she wins.
- Kevin Fox
While I absolutely detest these shows, I must say, this woman got to me.
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Oh, Duh. Got it, Kevin. This reminds me of the British man who sang opera. It was unbelievable. I think our American shows shoudn't limit the age. I'd love to see what some of the older folks here can do.
- Dawn
Dawn, America's got talent doesn't limit age either
- Jesse Stay
Great! I was thinking of American Idol. Never seen America's Got Talent.
- Dawn
"so you think you can dance" limits at 30 years or so. Such a shame.
- Kevin Fox
"So that's just one side of me!" Hahaha. So nice, she's courageous and willing, good game! So modest to have her walk away after her performance, I'm almost crying.
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
Wow. I usually avoid all of these types of shows. But that was very cool!
- Louis Gray
I actually felt a lump form in my throat. Good for her.
- cecily
As LG said, it's my first view of that. Damn talents' shows, they got me.
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
Not bad! I still prefer this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch... - That said, it was a surprisingly good performance. Not as much as Paul Potts, who was entirely horripilative and transcendent.
- david beckwith
This was a surprise--and lovely, thx
- susan mernit
Awesome performance. I've never seen the look of pleasant surprise on Simon's face before. You could tell that even he enjoyed it. He still needs to get a better haircut though.
- Alex Scoble
Britain may have talent, but that's more than I can say for Simon Cowell. The man is the Antichrist, as far as i'm concerned.
- Iain Baker
He was a tamed little kitteh for 6 minutes during that performance though.
- Alex Scoble
Don't know enough about Cowell to make a value judgement on the man. Sometimes (and I don't know if this is the case with Cowell) the a-hole attitude is a public front. It's possibly the case with Gordon Ramsey, and it certainly is with Ann Robinson - I've been to a recording of 'The Weakest Link' at Pinewood Studios, and she switches 'bitch mode' on and off along with the cameras.
- Ian May
Wow! Brings back memories when I first saw paul potts...
- Jorg Jansen
Seriously? This reeks of scripted viral. The show caught (online) fire in '07 with the Paul Potts audition...arguably the hottest shared video of the year. When the show returned last year, there wasn't an act even minutely close to the WOM impact Potts had generated the privious year. Clearly the BGT online buzz strategy for '09... Potts 2.0. #fail
- Zach Lytwyn
The best thing about this thread is that there is really only one cynical jaded comment out of all of them.
- cecily
Watching Simon's eyes go wide was soooooo worth it.
- Great Scott!
ahh, the power of the edit. great job of making her look like a 'cat lady' for the first several minutes. all the more powerful when we find out she's not totally daft.
- MikeAmundsen
That is one courageuos woman with an amazing voice. Goosebumps all over.
- Jochen Lillich
The knees belong to Chandrasekar Rathakrishnan, founder and CEO of http://fusiongarage.com -- which is doing the engineering work on the CrunchPad, the Tablet PCs that TechCrunch is making. Mike Arrington, founder of TechCrunch, is Twittering while riding his new Segway. Calacanis is Twittering too. The rest of the office is trying to get some work done. By the way, I met my wife in this office 10 years ago when I helped interview her for a job. The office also is where Doc Searls had his marketing company (the beginnings of Cluetrain Manifesto came from here).

Maryam and I worked right about where Heather is standing. By the way, this used to be Palo Alto's Mortuary. Off to find info about that. Bummer, not much info about this office is online.
- Robert Scoble
Didn't he say he'd kick your ass if you showed any Crunchpad pics? I got your back though, no worries. Btw, he's totally fug.
- sofarsoShawn
Slightly off topic: Using a Cannon 5D mark II in a well lit room? Almost seems like a waste. Sometime when you are in the northwest we need to go see a band play at one of the dark dive clubs I take photos in. I want to see how it works in that situation.
- MarkCarras
Mark: yeah, shooting at 6400 ISO too. It is an awesome camera. Used my 24 mm F2.8 prime lens.
- Robert Scoble
If only Scoble was in the pic that would be the nerdiest photo ever.
- Jonathan Coffman
sofaroshawn: I'm not too worried about Mike. Anyway, me thinks he really wanted the PR for the CrunchPad. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Just now realizing that I live almost next door to the new techcrunch office. pretty sweet place!
- Blake
Scoble: What is this colorful display on the table?
- Rafael
Rafael: those are the prototypes of the CrunchPad.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah, this office is on Lytton in Palo Alto at the corner of Ramona.
- Robert Scoble
I saw the CrunchPad when I was there that morning as well and was sworn not to mention/blog about it. But it looks like that didn't last long! :)
- Louis Gray
Dave McClure was first to post images from that day, so you guys are probably all just fine. :-) I don't think it's much of a secret any more.
- Jesse Stay
Intel Atom, you say... wish'em luck - they will need it...
- A.T.
Louis: I didn't agree to any embargo. And, anyway, it's TechCrunch. You know, those guys who don't agree to embargoes anyway! And I only posted this after Calacanis posted his own pictures. So there. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Are you guys seriously worrying about breaking a TECHCRUNCH embargo? Techcrunch doesn't seem too worried about embargos on their blogs.
- Jim Connolly
Awesome, Mike reminds me of Job on Arrested Development. Does he have his title stitched on the front of the bag?
- Ryan
PBS is holding many events at the 2009 SxSW Interactive Festival in Austin, TX. Visit the PBS area across the street from the convention center to meet with Public Broadcasting Service employees to see demonstrations of our latest tools and services, and help us brainstorm ideas for ways to make PBS more relevant.
