Man, I stood in front of that billboard, poking the hashtag with my finger for hours. Nothing happened except a priest came out and shouted at me.
- Slappy Line
Gotta be careful about ticking off priests up here in Canada. The ones that taught at my school years ago had a competitive - full contact - hockey team! They could mess you up but good.

Great post. Dislike adds a whole new dimension to aggregation that I'm not sure is warranted. People get bitter if you say or do something negatively towards them.
- Mark Trapp
That is a great post. I think you'll see positive results the more you interact :) Check out our first episode of YourStrands for an explanation (at the end) http://community.strands.com/2008...

Having thoughts about Dislike for weeks now... i think that by not liking someone's content for very long or forever is pretty much the same as disliking. The Like option seems to reflect someone's taste just fine, i love the positive approach, it's actually refreshing. More filtering options would be great here but Hide + Unsbscribe are quite efficient too :-) I don't consider this...

Majento, I'm pretty much in the same place as well. I don't like writing negative reviews, so when I cover something, you can know I like it or see serious potential. Why waste people's time complaining about something I don't want them to use? So you can assume if I don't mention it, that's a thumbs down or I don't know about it. :-)
- Louis Gray
I would like to try Strands sometime myself. Interesting perspective on dislike. I will try it out and offer my opinion.

Phillip, you have been invited to your Gmail.

Majento, Louis, for some reason hitting the "dislike" button just felt really wrong to me, and that's where the idea for the post came from - a new social decision that I had never confronted before. I do think it will be interesting to see if more sites start offering ways to filter content with attributes that have negative connotations.
- Jennifer Van Grove
Jenn, that's pretty much the same as Digg's "Bury", there are already lots of Bookmarking/News sites that are based on -/+. I wouldn't say dislike/bury equals doing wrong, or being negative in any way. It's just a different atmosphere, far more competitive, and sometimes creates room for intrigue & vengeance as you mentioned.
- Majento
The Ballhype and Showhype sites have long had a thumbs up and thumbs down features as well. And I believe NoiseRiver (a FriendFeed UI app) has a "Hate" feature vs. "Like". A bit strong for me.

Ooops, I just noticed that Drew beat me to it.... (comment via Disqus by jherskowitz)

Because of the rec aspect of the site the thumbs up/down is necessary, but I think it needs to be tweaked. The thumbs concept can be perceived in many ways and it isn't quite clear how the user is to approach it. Even just using words instead of an icon, as in "show me more stuff like this" & "I don't want to see things like this. Strands needs to help us use their rev technology to Its...

I completely agree with "it isn't quite clear how the user is to approach it." That's the whole issue I was having. A thumbs down icon is just that - iconic. I know what it means and what to do with it, but adding the word "dislike" to describe the action does add a new layer of context that some users, like myself, will consider before disliking any content. Plus, as you point it, it's all public! (comment via Disqus by Jennifer Van Grove)

2 Comments: 1) Louis Gray is always full of positivity. 2) I love the new features of Strands but I have a hard time with the UI. I feel like it is a little "over-done" (comment via Disqus by kylelacy)
- Jennifer Van Grove
Our intention is that "dislike" is assigned to the *content* and not the context (or poster). So, if I post a song and say "I love this song" and you don't like it, feel free to "thumbs down". By doing so you aren't telling me that you don't like *me*, just that you don't like the song. Also, this will help inform our recommendation engine that you aren't a fan of that content and allow...

Thumbs up/Thumbs down merely affects what types of content are recommended to you...so if you are using it in another way, you're not going to get the best out of Strands! (comment via Disqus by drewolanoff)

Good discussion to have. I wonder if getting the most Dislikes may become some sort of badge of honour among a subset of trolls out there. Depends on query ability and how usage/culture of the community evolves. (comment via Disqus by micahwittman)
- Jennifer Van Grove
When you thumbs up or thumbs down, you're simply helping us learn more about your tastes. It's saying that the content wasn't really relevant to you. It's definitely not a slight on someone!!! (comment via Disqus by drewolanoff)
- Jennifer Van Grove
Of course most people will use the dislike feature for that purpose, but I do think, in the case of social networks, that perception and interpretation are everything. So although the intentions could be harmless, the perception of the dislike itself could be something different entirely. (comment via Disqus by Jennifer Van Grove)
- Jennifer Van Grove
Think you're totally overthinking. Anyone putting themselves out there such that their content is accessible to people is opening said content up for judgment in the form of public opinion. I read a headline in a newspaper, a paragraph of a story, watch a movie preview or listen to the first 30 seconds of a song on the radio - then I either like it and keep going, or dislike it and go...

- Zee.
i got 1 out of 2 reminder emails, but both IMs
- embee
i've been using this for the last few days and must say it's pretty impressive...most stable/reliable that it was when first launch
- Zee.
How' this different than an Outlook reminder?
- Gregg
i haven't used outlook reminder so not sure, but the main benefits of this include - easy to type in reminders "call Linda tomorrow at 4pm". It will remind you via email/im...and you can also search on the site, on your mobile or via im for what you have going on on a particular day
- Zee.
Two filters that Friendfeed still needs: Filter by Service (e.g. create a music-friend-list and feed all last.fm entries to it), and Filter by Topic (i.e. hide all 'topic X' or feed all 'topic X' to a friend-category).
Search + Rss works awesome, thanks guys (and FriendFeed)! Now, I still need the option to "hide all Topic X (i.e. a keyword like Olympics or politics)" and I'm a happy camper.
- Vincent van Wylick
This conversation may now be a while ago... but I can't find the rss feeds on searches anymore. When and why are they gone??
- Alexander Ebel
I understand the frustration. However, before I knew better, I started blogging on Blogger and can't reliably put out a full feed even though I have chosen that option in my site feed settings. Since I'm not technically adept, I'd be grateful for advice. Any thoughts?
- V Mary Abraham
Awesome !! Twhirl on steroids. TweetDeck enables users to split their main feed (All Tweets) into topic or group specific columns allowing a broader overview of tweets. The default columns can contain All Tweets from your timeline, @replies directed to you and direct messages. The GROUP, SEARCH and REPLIES buttons then allow the user to make up additional columns populated from the live tweet information. Once created these additional columns will automatically update allowing the user to keep track of a twitter threads far easier.
- SnakeDoc
Twetdeck does not support to tradional Chinese, 繁體中文,too. But it has good link of twitpic and other service, including "search" of twitter.
- borghrose
from Alert Thingy
Except--unless I'm missing something--the groups don't persist. If you close that column, or Tweetdeck entirely, that group is, *poof*, gone. I really like groups, but I got burned creating one over the course of several hours off and on, went to a meeting (shutting down my laptop, and Tweetdeck with it of course), and late found my group was nowhere to be found. Sucky. Persistence is surely on a to-do list, tho... can't wait.
- abacab
I'd still like a Friendfeed version of Tweetdeck, too, of course...
- abacab
I like Twhirl, but it's no Tweetdeck. Twhirl isn't a very good FFeed client for me...and I prefer Tweetdeck for Twitter over Twhirl anymore anyway, too. I prefer Tweetdeck's breakout of columns, allowing me to organize queries, watch replies, and...track groups, all in one large dashboard-style view. Just want it for Friendfeed now, to watch lists and rooms and all that, in that same large at-a-glance dashboard view.
- abacab
Was buggy at first but just came back to the latest version a few days ago and it is awesome!
- Andy Lewandowski
One feature I'd recommend to developers, sync option of the groups with different computers. So I don't have to create my groups on every computer I use.
- Ozkan Altuner
I'm a convert. They also fixed that bug that kept moving people into the wrong groups
- anna sauce
i've used twwetdeck for a while - it's the best twitter client period. performance has greatly improved as well
- Sean Scott
Ok I am twhirl user and I use Twhirl for Twitter and FF. Can you provide me an aggregator for the Friendfeed conponent to replace FF?
- Ian Cleasby
from twhirl
Been using TweetDeck for a couple weeks now and I'm loving it so far.
- Karl Gookey
Yep for twitter alone no client I have tried can beat it. How ever it will soon need new features again to stay in front of browser based options being released. Perhaps multiple accounts like is available with twhirl would be a step forward. I would also commend @iaindodsworth for the great support he provides users on twitter with tweetdeck issues.
- Twittergator
Do u include peoplebrowsr in your comparison?
- Tokyo Dan
Great application that has been tested.
- Tim FitzGerald
Being using it all day. More user friendly than Twhirl - just need a Friendfeed equal (even Twhirl did Friendfeed).

Art and volunteer work. I'm going into the field of disaster relief and aid work though so I guess my answer is that you don't ever have to work if you find a job that fulfills you and makes you happy. :)

We don't really have to work for someone else. We have just been conditioned think we have to go to college, get in debt, get tracked in the system as wage slaves. You could stay home, plant a garden, raise a few chickens for eggs, goats for milk, maybe a calf or two, make a little money here or there.

"A business plan is best described as a resume for your business. It provides a description of your business as well as identifying goals and providing a road map for the future. It can be used to help you get a loan or investors and can be a way of informing your personnel, suppliers and others about your company."

somewhat different from a resume, I think. A business-plan is future-focused, while a CV is mostly a biographical document. A BP does force you to think about the strengths & weaknesses of your idea(s), which is similar to the idea of a resume.

I guess you already have Wii Sports. Bowling is a staple multiplayer family game. We also had a lot fun last Christmas with Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree.

You might be interested in the Wii Ware game "World of Goo" http://tinyurl.com/6ax82y. I hardly ever play on the Wii anymore (that school thing), but when I do, I really enjoy Super Mario Galaxy. It's just a great, gorgeous, engaging experience. Also, I could get one star a day, feel fulfilled, and have only spent 5 to 10 minutes in front of the game. Also, I can leave it, come back months later, and not have to remember where I am and what's next to do. If that's not casual, I don't know what is.
- Chris Lasher
Yep, second Chris' comment on SMG. More of a single-player game (the "parent and kid mode" may entertain very young kids, not sure), but definitely a fun one to pick up and play for ~15 mins at a time, without requiring massive time investment, but still gives the feeling of some achievement. I'm at 68 stars after ~ 12 months (~ half way), still pick it up at least once a month for a short burst.

Looks like will be spending some more moolah

Just got around to watching the pilot for Crusoe; I was expecting it to crash and burn, but I was pleasantly surprised. Like the Swiss Family Robinson meets Pirates of the Caribbean. Still not sure NBC can sell a Friday night show set in the 18th century. Anyone else watching it?

It's still standing up IMHO after several episodes. I'm not sure where they can go with it though. I expect to see Ginger and Marianne land any moment now :-) But the acting is excellent (OK, the head hunters were silly). And there are some deeper themes about loyalty, quality, intelligence and friendship that I really appreciate.

Apparently it's canceled already. That was quick.

Oh, is it? I hadn't heard that. Seems like stuff is getting canceled right and left lately. I was starting to get tired of "I want to go home - hey, here's a way to get home - damn, that didn't work" every week. Little predictable.
