Also, I love the FreeBSD ports collection (which Gentoo tried to imitate). cd /usr/ports/devel/git; make install will fetch git, build it, and install it, and automatically deal with any dependencies as they arrive.
- Tudor Bosman
Another option is pkg_add -r git which will install a binary package compiled with default options, and resolve dependencies.
- Scott Ludwig
from iPhone
Okay, nested dependencies work just fine until you find a package that depends on TeX. Why does my little storage box need latex and amstex and mkfontdir and dvips and...?
- Tudor Bosman
Because you need PDFs of the documentation, of course!
- Eric Borisch
In many languages, apparently. /usr/ports/print/latex-cjk/scripts/installt1enc.sh arb5sung arb5sung.ttf Bg5 Generating Type 1 subfonts arb5sung from arb5sung.ttf [Bg5 planes: 1-55]:
- Tudor Bosman
This is apparently all caused by updating the freebsd-doc-en package, which regenerates all forms of documentation from scratch.
- Tudor Bosman
One of my disks appears bad, hopefully it's the cable.ad8: FAILURE - READ_DMA48 timed out LBA=766744255
- Tudor Bosman
Two more disks are showing read errors, including the boot disk. This is not good at all. Maybe WD actually qualifies RAID-level drives, and rebrands the crappy ones (with bad sectors which auto-remap) as consumer-level. With auto-remapping turned off, errors start creeping in within days.
- Tudor Bosman
I'll investigate this more, of course, by mounting the bad disks into a different machine and looking at SMART output, but so far it smells of a bad batch of drives.
- Tudor Bosman
How hot are they getting? (It's in the SMART data) ... We had a fan go out on a drive tower (and the 'dead fan' alarm didn't sound -- wonderful) and we smoked at least three drives before figuring out what was going on.
- Eric Borisch
Eric: While trying to stress the disks with a few dd commands running in parallel, I can't get them to heat up above 26 degrees Celsius. I'd say that cooling inside my box works well. The two newly failed disks have 5 UNCorrectable sectors each -- and that's just because the SMART buffer only remembers the last 5 errors.
- Tudor Bosman
Maybe I just got a bad batch, but at this point I would recommend against using WD20EADS drives for anything.
- Tudor Bosman
yeah, the EADS aren't so good. The ABYS series have been super reliable in comparison, but I don't think they go up to that many TB.
- Private Sanjeev
incidentally the drives are physically different (the mechanicals are more vibration-resistant on enterprise drives), so WD doesn't just rebrand flaky drives.
- Private Sanjeev
Any opinions on the new, 4-platter WD RE4 RAID edition drives? They're 2TB, expensive as hell, but there may be deals to be had. Alternatively, the Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB.
- Tudor Bosman
I have a bunch of EADS drives (4x1TB, 4x1.5TB) and I haven't seen any problems. Might just be a bad batch.
- Joe Beda ()
Currently leading the pack: Hitachi 7K2000.
- Tudor Bosman
I only have experience with ABYS and EADS in production :(.
- Private Sanjeev
I have 24 A7K1000s that have been going great for over a year. (Knocks on wood)
- Eric Borisch
Okay, I ordered 5 7K2000s. Let's see how this goes.
- Tudor Bosman
The box is back up with the 5 Hitachi 7K2000 drives. I copied all the data over again, and "zpool scrub" now completes without errors. I'll update this post after 2 or 3 days of burn-in.
- Tudor Bosman
Hint: Read the man page. The "--batch" option to portupgrade is supremely useful. portupgrade -vaP --batch: upgrade all installed FreeBSD packages, prefer to use precompiled packages if available (-P), don't ask questions (use default configuration options).
- Tudor Bosman
A few scrubs later, still zero errors, and normal smartctl output. I now deem the box ready for production use (that is, the main storage device in the Bosman household).
- Tudor Bosman
Does anybody sell a BSD/ZFS raid box that is all ready to go?
- Peng-Toh
For small boxes, you could consider a self-contained box like a MSI Wind PC ($139).
- Scott Ludwig
from iPhone
I mean something that comes with all software (BSD/ZFS) installed, an UI and no "hacking" required. Something for a non-techie.
- Peng-Toh
my EADS results: 2/6 failed so far (free RMA replacement). no data loss though.
- Michael Herf
Tudor: FWIW, random activity is much more stressful (and power consuming = heat producing) than the contiguous reads/writes you get from dd. Try bonnie++ or iozone if you'd like to really hit the system. Glad to hear you're up and running - ZFS is fantastic stuff.
- Eric Borisch
Michael: Yes, I had 3 out of 5 EADS drives fail within a week. I returned all 5 and got Hitachi 7K2000.
- Tudor Bosman
Thomas definitely wouldn't have been able to tackle pizza crust at Spencer's age, but now that he's got a pretty good set of baby teeth (central & lateral incisors and first molars), he does pretty well with most things especially pizza crust and bagels.
- April Buchheit
Spencer also really likes cherry tomatoes, though we don't have any pictures of him eating those.
- Robert Felty
That baby is so Fedibblety! He's all Clariscious and Robtastic.
- Bethany
Terribly cute :) I love the little wrinkles on the bridge of his nose!
- Jeanette Bosman
My G1. I'm pretty sure it's gone for good... I'm imagining it somewhere, stuffed in a bag filled with trash, all alone, with a dead battery. So sad. Am I crazy for being so upset about this?
- Jeanette Bosman
Not crazy at all, Jeanette. I hate losing stuff myself. I thought I've lost Camilla's ipod a couple of times and it feels terrible. And I can't even imagine losing my iPhone (which has a lot of important information). I'd be totally clueless.
- April Buchheit
One of the best birthdays so far... Dinner and Cocktails at Cyrus last night, Stayed over in Healdsburg, hung out at Stinson beach. Will go dancing/listen to live music later tonite. Thanks all for the wishes.
I thought the cocktails were great. The best I have ever had. The food was OK. They seemed to be too focused on emphasizing certain flavors. I wasn't extremely impressed.
- Bindu Reddy
Love Miley, but prefer her older stuff: Hannah Montana...
- sofarsoShawn
Wait, why is Tudor liking this? Did he have something to do with your dropping dinner on the floor? Did he not like what you prepared and is now breathing a sigh of relief that he doesn't have to eat it anymore? Inquiring minds want to know. :)
- April Buchheit
Hah, no, he was eating dinner at work tonight. So this was just lonely dinner-for-one. I like to think that his "like" was sort of a virtual sympathy hug. But I will give him a punch, just to be on the safe side.
- Jeanette Bosman
It turned out okay. I guess I should've double checked what the internal temp should be because I let it cook a little too long and it turned out more well done than I would've liked. I just went by my meat thermometer's suggestion for beef, which is 160 degrees, but I guess that was too conservative (or liberal - depending on how you see it) of a internal temp goal.
- April Buchheit
If I can add my humble suggestion, I usually take a roast out when it is about 7-10 degrees shy of where I want it to end up. The internal temperature of a piece of meat (or anything really) continues to rise for ten to fifteen minutes after being removed from the oven. Then just let the roast rest for 10-15 before slicing.
- Jeanette Bosman
So cute! Our girls would love this - though it looks like it takes up a lot of space. Where did you get it?
- Jeanette Bosman
You guys should try putting a couple of real mice in there. I'm sure your kitties would go absolutely bonkers! :)
- April Buchheit
Jeanette doesn't let me buy mice to test and train our cats' hunting abilities. :(
- Tudor Bosman
Dean, I know... but I didn't have time to flip it in iMovie before the deadline for the competition. This video was for a competition that the Bergan Turbo Track is having. I'm hoping to win $1,000 for the shelter, but I got in right at the end so I couldn't go for most views, instead I'm trying for staff pick/Awesome uses for the track.
- Rachel Lea Fox
I got these at Petco and Petsmart, but buy it at Petsmart it's cheaper. All the pieces come apart and you can put them back together however you want. This is 2 full sets plus 2 extra straight a ways. Also buying full kits are cheaper than their mini extension packs. One kit at Petsmart is $19.95, and as you can see the kitties love it. The big kitties too even though I didn't tape them here.
- Rachel Lea Fox
Jeanette, since you can configure as you like, it takes up as much space a you want it too. And you could stick to one kit instead of two, I just go a little crazy when something lets me build things and I want to keep building!!
- Rachel Lea Fox
April, the cats might love it, but I would not be too fond of the real mice. The one expeirence Nym had with catching a real mouse she didn't' know what to do with it, she just held it there. She is too pampered for real mice. She did have fun with it though. Tudor, I don't think that the fake mice train them well for real mice, like I said, ours don't know what to do with them once...

"The Mermaid problem is an observation occasionally mentioned in literature, concerning the difficulty of having sexual intercourse with a mermaid."
- Jeanette Bosman
from Bookmarklet
A French idiom, finir en queue de poisson (to end with the tail of a fish), makes reference to this difficulty; it refers to a promising start that ends in disappointment.
- Private Sanjeev
Interestingly this was not always an issue. In the past it was not uncommon for a mermaid (actually a medieval siren or melusine) to be portrayed as having a split tail, with a vagina located (or merely implied to be) between the two parts. H. P. Lovecraft's short story "Dagon"[4] and the logo of the American coffee chain Starbucks are examples of this. In the original version of the...

SLU - BGI flight rescheduled / cancelled because the flight attendant is sick. We had to get off the plane and now we have to go through the security checkpoint again.
this would not be a good look for me. yet another fashion for bony boy-looking girls.

i like them and see a lot of girls rocking the genie look right now. granted, i live in a fashion forward city so what works here might not work elsewhere.
- jack
I love them actually... they are super comfy. I don't own any though
- Bindu Reddy
That picture is not a pic of harem pants.
- Spidra Webster
They're like tightened-up harem pants... what would you call them, Spidra? They're not just capris.
- Kamilah Gill
I couldn't wear them (I think) but I think they would look great on you. With some strappy and maybe even studded high heel sandals, and a flowy trapeze tank. When it gets colder, add some funky colored tights and a boxy jacket or sweater shawl.
- Jeanette Bosman
Reminds me of MC Hammer pants! Jess, I think you could pull it off....

Name That Foster Kitten Season 2 - Meet Boomer (aka Boomerang). Our grey & white boy is a real sweetheart. He aspires to be a lap kitten, but sometimes must rocket from lap to attack and back again. He has some odd eating habits (likes everyone else's food only), and is curious, contemplative and cute. #foxfosterkitten
VOTING ENDS FRIDAY THE 14TH AROUND 4:30ISH!! Names must be adoptable names, which means not really strange or obscure/in jokes (that can't also make sense to other people). Names can be people names or not as long at its cute. Something that is fun to say or rolls off the tongue easy is also good. We will take brainstorming suggestions for the next 24 hours and then voting on Thursday, not sure yet what the end time will be.
- Rachel Lea Fox
For some reason he strikes me as an Edward
- anna sauce
For some reason I thought of Maxwell, or Ping, like a horse I used to know that would startle at anything and go rocketing off, but calm down a couple seconds later.
- Heather
Oh, Ping is cute. I can see him being a Ping.
- joey
yeah lots of options already. Heather, he doesn't really startle, he just wants to attack one of the other kittens, but he also wants to be on my lap and he can't figure out how to have both at the same time so he rockets off, gets someone and then comes running right back. It might also be because he is a little chicken and the four of them have truly developed a game much like tag...

The second photo above was from over the weekend when he would only eat gruel (kitten formula with wet kitten food mixed) as he wasn't totally weaned. He got done eating with a goatee of gruel hanging from his chin. I had to get a photo before he licked it away.
- Rachel Lea Fox
Oh, I want this kitten! I have currently named him Musfhaff (because I must have!)
- Janet
"Streak" - i luv his markings, the streak across his snout is cute ! [edit to support my choice] "narrow irregular line, stripe, smear; rapid movement or something that moves very quickly; trace, small amount; layer, stratum; unbroken series of events; spell or run (of luck, misfortune, etc.)
- Peter Dawson
He looks a lot like a kitten we just got, but ours is black on top and white on underside. We thought about naming ours :Oreo," but had to give him a cajun name cause he's a transplant from Louisiana to Texas. So we named our Boudreaux. But you may like Oreo, if his gray is dark enough.
- Katy Barrilleaux
Janet, do you live in the bay area? If you are interested I can add you to my list of people who are interested in one of them and give you more information as soon as I figure it all out. The kittens need to stay here at least a month before they can be adopted, but we can talk if you are interested.
- Rachel Lea Fox
He looks like a Shmootz to me (I probably spelled that wrong.) He looks like he has a little shmootz on his chin and could use a napkin.
- Marci Golub
Sorry, on the east coast but like Marci's name, it is used as PA word Dutch for something gooey/wet/dirty :)
- Janet
Yeah, I have to agree, "schmutz" does not have a good connotation in my understanding (as someone who grew up in the east coast hearing that). "You have a little schmutz on your shirt. You might want to clean that off before you go to the interview."
- Ragani Harris
My gray and white cat's name is Puddy and he won't eat until the other two cats are finished. (Puddy is short for Puddin'head.)
- Kimber Scott
There was a lady that lived across the street from me that had a kitty with the same facial markings as yours, I never knew its name but I always called it; "Pugsley"
- Scratch5150
My adoptee, RubyRoo, was 6 when I got her a few months ago. She spent the first few days in the closet and wouldn't come out (except for critical bodily functions!) Now, she curls up next to me in bed, rolls over to let me rub her tummy whenever I pass by, and almost lets me hold her (for a minute or so, tops!) We're making progress. My vote is for the name: Rupert. (I don't know why.)
- Mark "DerBingle" J
Mark, that is awesome! And really fast progress for an adult cat. Congrats to you and RubyRoo!!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Rupert! I have to say the Victorian names are working- something about the coloring, like he's in black & white tails or something.
- anna sauce
He does look dressed up. I thought of Tux, but it's kind of cheesy. Victorian names are way cooler.
- Heather
ok going fwd - new direct for the kitty's :)- my name theme now is going to be greek. So here goes -'Vasilios -With royal blood, regal" !
- Peter Dawson
PLS VOTE FOR "Patton" - GENERAL PATTON :)-
- Peter Dawson
And so begins the campaigning for names. Awesome! Names on he poll are: Harley, Domino, Patton, Lego, Boomer (aka Boomerang), Rupert and Nami. Though I'm sorry Kevin, but I think we shouldn't go with Nami since the other grey one is now named Nonny. We can save Nami for another time. Voting till around 4:30 today. He is the last kitten without a name!!
- Rachel Lea Fox
Cat without a name? Makes me think of the old 'spaghetti' westerns......Clint! Hey how about that?
- Kevin J Hatton
Kevin, that is a great one, but brainstorming is closed and we are voting at the poll right now. I will add that to the list for possibles with the next set of kittens though. Poll is here: http://answers.polldaddy.com/poll...
- Rachel Lea Fox
Based on the current results, I'd say the poll is faulty. (Because my choice is not winning)
- Brian Johns
Sparky, other than your suggested kitty, what is your choice?
- Rachel Lea Fox
I liked Patton the best, but chose Lego because it had the best combination of "how much I like it" and "chances of winning".
- Brian Johns
because nobody wants to vote for a loser, right??? :-)

I think abdellah's original comment was asking why the couple WASN'T same-sex.

Name That Kitten - We are starting with our little black & white girl. Expand to see 7 pics. She's a medium long haired little fluff ball. She's already a lap kitten and likes to cuddle with me and attack anything that moves. Brainstorming closed, & Voting closed. Her name is Moxie!! Should I do it again for one of the boys? #foxfosterkittens
She is first to give an audible purr and is an absolute sweetie! Names must be adoptable names, which means not really strange or obscure/in jokes (that can't also make sense to other people). But Penny doesn't even sound like it's short for Penguin. Besides, Penguin doesn't make a very good female kitten name (imho).
- April Buchheit
It sounds like she's got a sassy personality so she's got to have a name that reflects that.
- April Buchheit
Caprice. We just rescued a kitten, and my daughter came up with that name for ... him. Poor kitty's going to get beaten up on the playground.
- DGentry
"Dammit", cuz when she does crazy stuff, the name rolls right off the tongue. "Get over here, dammit!" "Dammit! What's wrong with you?!"
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Kevin is currently being kitty playground. As some of the names come in I was reading them to him. As I said "Bit" to him, one of the kittens play bit him. I'm not sure Kevin is going to go for that name. ;-)
- Rachel Lea Fox
About 5 or so years ago, I decided that if I were ever to adopt a kitty, I'd name her Camilla (because I've always liked that name). I ended up having a baby girl though. :) She's a long-haired little ball of energy. She's a lap child only with me and likes to cuddle. She verbally attacks anything that moves (meaning, she'll barrage a total stranger with her constant stream of consciousness). She is first to give an audible scream and is an absolute sweetie! :)
- April Buchheit
I was all set to update and say that this little girl is the only one of the four that is not a toe biter. Then she bit my toe. She was cute while she did it though! And she has total trust, she will lay back and just topple right off my lap. About half the time I manage to catch her, the other half, well....
- Rachel Lea Fox
I nominate the name Clue for the black kitty. Why? A small glimpse into how my brain works: Hmm cat appears to have blue eyes > Blues Clues > too long, shorten > Blue? > Too common > Clues? > Single cat requires singular > Clue!

I don't know why, but she looks like a Scarlett to me :)

I really loved the name of our old cat that went missing last year: Morpheus. Ok, so it's a little odd, but somehow the "King of Dream/Sleep" seems appropriate for a cat. And no, it's *not* a Matrix reference.
- Joel Webber
pretty common but Whiskers because her white whiskers show up so well on her black body.

Considered something a bit different? How about Aiko, I'm told it means "Little Loved One" in Japanese. Or Aisha, 'Life' in Arabic.
- Mo Kargas
Aiko's good. "Ochame" means someone who is a bit capricious and a bit playful and mischievous. Chamekko is a nick-namey play on that. Neko is cat. So, chamekko the neko. Could be a little unwieldy to say, though :-p
- Rick Cogley
Or if you like anime, how about "Jiji", the name of Miyazaki Hayao's Kiki's Delivery Service? (majo no takkyubin).

Wow, this went crazy while I was asleep. I definitely have a few favorites so far but I haven't even read the whole list yet. I'm thinking later this afternoon I'll narrow the list and put it up for voting. I'll let you know before I stop taking suggestions. So if you have any more ideas you have at least 3 or so hours to add them in. This is so awesome!!

I've set the cut off for tomorrow (Tuesday the 11th) at 4:30pm. Enjoy: http://friendfeed.com/kitteh...

My suggestion doesn't seem to be listed on the poll. This smells like ballot fraud to me.
- Geoff Schultz
How do we go about adopting one of your ladies?
- anna sauce
Geoff, your suggestion came after we closed brainstorming (closed last night) and even then we had to narrow down the suggestions to our top favorites since we got so many amazing ones.
- Rachel Lea Fox
anna, for now keep in contact with me. This is a new shelter for me, so I don't really know their process, but it's in my manual and I will look it up. They have to stay with me for at least a month as they are way too young for the operations yet. As they get closer to 2lbs which is around 8 weeks (they are about 4 weeks now) then we can begin the process if there are interested people. I will make sure to get you all the information.

This was playtime right after dinner late last night. Last feeding before we get to sleep. They now consider me one of them, or the mommy or something to that effect and have no reservations around me. They also think that I am their jungle gym and I have the scratches to prove it. Too too cute though! And they are starting to learn (after this video) to climb up on my lap and not up my sides.

It's really creative and fun to look at but I think it'd be really bizarre to eat it.

So the burger part is really a cupcake... but it's served up with real fries? Or are the fries actually cupcake as well? Cupcake seems like it'd go poorly with actual fries. EDIT: Just looked at the closeup. Looks like the fries are cupcake as well. That's slightly less bizarre... but still I think it'd confuse my brain too much.
