Twice now I've been burgled in broad daylight because I've lived places where neighbors aren't looking out for each other. The neighborhoods with "paranoid" people don't generally have problems like that because people call in whatever looks suspicious. Makes sense to me. Food is "ethnic" if it comes from the traditions of another culture that's foreign to us, right? So, food that's more traditional, more authentic, or from a culture that's more unlike our own is more ethnic. The Old Spaghetti Factory: barely ethnic at all. Well, isn't that more or less what I was saying? Perhaps with less focus on authenticity. "Ethnic" mostly means "foreign", i.e. distant and/or unfamiliar. (Except for in drugstores where the "ethnic care" aisle seems to be products for black people.) - ⓞnor

Sure, familiarity might be considered a proxy for similarity. But in any case, the parts of the conversation I heard (I wasn't really paying close attention) seemed to indicate that Japanese food was "more ethnic" than Chinese food, while Mexican food was somewhere in the middle. Well, (Americanized) Chinese food is popular throughout America -- see Jennifer 8.'s research -- but Japanese food is less Americanized and less popular away from cosmopolitan urban centers. My parents had pseudo-Chinese food all the time (we used to make egg rolls and stir fry at home) but had never eaten sushi until I introduced them to it. So I think for most of America, Japanese food really is much more ethnic than Chinese food. I would have said Mexican was less ethnic than either one, though. - ⓞnor

I think a restaurant becomes less ethnic by serving fusions or multiple ethnic foods. Californian food has to be the least ethnic food in the world. Part of the meaning of ethnic food is how traditional it is. (It's not necessarily fast food that makes it non-ethnic. Popeye's is pretty ethnic, although Roscoe's is better) Italian food would be considered more ethnic if they served traditional Roman food, including organ meats. - Chris White

I don't know, in spite of analysis, I still think this is a strange/funny conversation. Why in the world would you put degree of ethnicity in a category of its own when deciding what to eat? If you want to eat something that is unfamiliar, wouldn't you just say that you feel like something new? I think that the assumption that ethnic = unfamiliar is silly. Jeanette, well people are strange. When I want to eat something ethnic, it means I want to eat something relatively unfamiliar to most of my culture, but something that is traditional to other cultures. We used these in Romania last June (and well, I guess Tudor used them his entire childhood) and they are so efficient. The problem was (as the article states) that the room would get so unbearably hot, while adjacent rooms were still freezing. I like the method they describe where this problem is solved by routing some of the heat to the rest of the house via hoses in the walls. Very cool! (er, warm) - Jeanette Martinez

The house Clare's parents built has a wood burning stove. They wanted to do this style of stove where the smoke goes back and forth, but instead they just built a large brick chimney, which goes up through the living room. The brick in the living room stays warm for many hours after a fire goes out. - Robert Felty

Rob, I'm pretty sure Maggie had the windows open once last week to let some of the warm air in. It's not good enough to just be colder outside because this system doesn't have a thermostat. Once you've fired it for the day, if it's not cold enough outside, you just have to take off your clothes or open the windows. I bet it's a great system for making a pizza, though! - Gabe

A lot of older apartment buildings in SF are heated by steam. In mine, the steam is turned on by the building automatically twice a day: in the morning and in the evening. If it gets too hot, you open windows to regulate it. - Chris White

Steam valves: NYC, too, and probably any older city; it sucks and it's ridiculously inefficient. You can get thermostat steam valves, but they're hard to install and inaccurate. The value of an oven stove seems to be that it has a lot of thermal mass, provides radiant heat, and efficiently harvests heat from flue gases. Those can all be done with conventional heating (and often are, in modern energy-efficient buildings), with the advantage that the conventional system can be thermostatically controlled. - ⓞnor

Dan, I presume an oven stove is more efficient than a regular wood stove because it allows for complete combustion instead of lots of fuel going up the chimney. It also may not waste as much energy heating things like all the air in the room. - Gabe

Radiant heat is very common in Germany, and they have very accurate radiators. They generally only heat the rooms that they are using at the time. I think this is extremely efficient. - Robert Felty

I can believe it. It doesn't seem technically hard, but for some reason it's not done in the US, maybe because steam radiant heat is only used in a dwindling number of older buildings in major cities. - ⓞnor

Nowadays radiant heat is done with pumped hot water, not steam. Many installations have a thermostat controlling a solenoid valve in each room (or zone), so it could be just as easily done with steam. - Gabe

Atif Irfan said federal authorities removed eight members of his extended family and a friend after passengers heard them discussing the safest place to sit and misconstrued the nature of the conversation. Irfan, a U.S. citizen and tax attorney, said he was "impressed with the professionalism" of the FBI agents who questioned him, but said he felt mistreated when the airline refused to book the family for a later flight. As a flight attendant I listen to what people say and how they are saying it. If it sounded somewhat like a threat then I would have taken them off the plane too. Its obvious that something seemed suspicious. People don't understand the dangers of flying what so ever and not to joke around with stupid comments while on a plane. - Brandy Lea

It's not that I don't respect the attendants for having raised suspicions and reporting what they heard. But denying them transit after the FBI has specifically cleared them as being safe just shows poor corporate judgment. That's when the safety argument breaks down and it starts to look like discrimination. And don't get me started about Security Theater as interpreted by the TSA and the airlines. It might have been poor judgment but we have only heard part of the facts and it does say that they did get full refunds and that they can fly with that airline again. People on the later flights might have heard what happened earlier that day and didn't want them on the flight and instead of having a full flight with 100 some people flipping out. It could have been a good choice for the families safety not to get on the flight. People are crazy and I am talking in general! - Brandy Lea
