Don Miller: "The number-one way we consume stories--and have our moral compasses adjusted--isn't through movies, but through each other. People around us who are telling stories adjust what we think is beautiful and what we think profane, what we think is worth living for and what we think is worth dying for." in this month's Sojourners,...
Jeannie working on a sunday night ... not good! and to save money i didn't go to a cafe but stayed home, but now i'm just eating everything in my fridge: tilapia, rice, kale (two servings), bag of baby carrots, chips, salsa, chai tea, chocolate covered macademia nut, a bowl of lucky charms, and i am now contemplating a brownie. oh lord help me.
The quality feels a little on the toy-ish side, but it works fine. I still have it though I think the novelty of it wore off pretty quickly.

But you know, it's a poached egg, right? Using steam from the toaster! that's neat.
- Christopher Chung
i bought one at target a coupla years ago for $20, and still use it as my main toaster. rarely poach eggs in it, altho i still sometimes use it for hard-boiled eggs. it's much quicker than the traditional way of boiling eggs, and I like that i'm using one energy cycle to get both toast and eggs. agree with dan that the quality is rather low, but for $20 i can't complain.

Just ate the best damn chicken sandwich of my life! It was so good, I had to share the second half with someone else just so I could talk about it. There's a sermon illustration in there somewhere ... the youth pastor in me never dies!
"The October 26, 2009, Time magazine ran Kathleen Kingsbury’s article titled Sex and the Eco-City. Who knew that “green” creep had made it into the bedroom? Kingsbury describes a market of organic lubricants, biodegradable whips and handcuffs, vegan condoms, and glass or mahogany vibrators (even hand-crankable models, eliminating the need for batteries). To top it off, some Catholic...

"As Christians, we should ask ourselves, who would Jesus heal? The biblical record is clear. Everybody. Jesus did not discriminate or withhold care. He didn't ask for co-pays or referrals. It was enough for him to know that the people were pre-existing." --Ed Spivey Jr., in this month's Sojourners. (http://www.sojo.net/index...).

Really interesting. I liked this line: "Hands are won and lost as the inmates shuffle and toss the cards on top of one another. Their discards form kaleidoscopic arrangements in which the dead and the missing peer up together, as though from a deep, shared hole."
- Christopher Chung
"Mr. Lucas acknowledges that the cards have yet to solve a murder in South Carolina, but he emphasizes that they have prompted dozens of tips, including one promising lead in a case more than a dozen years old."

Heading back to the subway, I remembered that I had intended to pick one of these up after our lunch at Xie Xie. It has been taunting us via the food blogesphere, and we've been dying to give it a try. And good is was. Great, even. Addictive and heavenly, in fact! This is NOT an overrated dessert. It's sweet, salty, creamy and crunchy. What more could you ask for in a dessert? In addition, it is such a clever play on the real thing. We are in love! if that black stuff is black sesame, then i'm in for at least a dozen.
- Felicia Yue
it's caramel! dyed black. still ... I would hesitate to dig in. Proves how crucial presentation is when it comes to food!
- Jeannie Choi
Hmmm, I think I might have actually liked the idea better when I thought it was black sesame. Caramel might be a bit too much for me.

brian - have you had black sesame ice cream? i can't find it anywhere but japan but it's to die for
- Felicia Yue
I've not had it as ice cream, but I've occasionally had other desserts that have used black sesame filling of some kind or another. Pretty delicious stuff.

I’ve wanted for ages to write about Chinese thousand year old egg, also known as century egg or preserved egg (pei dan in Cantonese, pi dan in Mandarin, literally ’skin/leather egg’), but until my recent trip to China, I had no photos. Despite the rather off-putting name, they’re not really a thousand years old. Duck eggs, more commonly used than chicken eggs, are preserved for about a hundred days using a combination of ashes, lime, tea and salt. After this process, the egg white turns gelatinous and amber in colour, while the yolk becomes grey/green and can still be a little gooey in the very centre.

looks kind of fascinating and scary but i'm sure it's delicious with congee, even though i don't really like congee
- Jeannie Choi
this is the only food that makes me gag and spit it out every time I taste it. it's NASTY. why ruin a perfectly good congee with this stuff?
- Felicia Yue
Love this stuff. We usually either have it in congee or with cold tofu + thick soy sauce. In congee you don't really get much of its actual flavor since everything's all mixed up to begin with.

In 1949, LIFE photographer Gjon Mili visited Picasso in Vallauris, France. He showed Pablo some photographs of ice skaters with tiny lights affixed to their skates jumping in the dark. Picasso was immediately inspired, these photos were the result. You can see more of these in this LIFE gallery.
