“What's the youngest you'd feel safe flying with a baby?”
January 1 at 7:52 pm - Link
1 month? 2 months? - Gabe
It looks like Gabe's sister might be getting married in California this May or June. Our baby is due in April. We're contemplating whether to leave her with my parents or take her on a the plane with us. - Maggie
Depends on you guys. I'm sure Baby April would sleep through the flight. If anything, the first 3 months just might be the best age range to travel. ;) - April Buchheit
I would take my son if I went somewhere that early, but April has more experience than me. If you are planning to nurse, it seems like the separation could throw your milk production out of wack (both uncomfortable while there and lower when you get back... - Clare Dibble
Thanks! I hadn't thought of either of those things. It looks like baby's first trip on an airplane will be this spring. - Maggie
Depends: how many hours has the baby logged to get his or her pilot's license? - Jeff Eddings
Jeff, I said "flying with a baby", not "with a baby flying"! :) - Gabe
Milan is 15 months and has been to Europe three times with no problems yet. I would say two months is perfect to fly. - Robert Scoble
As a non-baby owner, what is the potential risk? The pressurized cabin? Loud noises? - Mark Trapp
Mark: Assuming that flying is just as stressful for babies as for adults, and knowing that stress weakens the immune system, it is possible that the a cross-country flight may make a baby sick. I'm not worried that my child will be injured, I just don't want to spend the vacation carring for a sick baby. - Gabe

Thoughts on The No Asshole Rule
December 31 at 11:09 am - tomstocky.com - Link
What a great way of putting it. I think tech companies can be highly susceptible to this sort of behavior, perhaps because some geeks have a tendency to be assholes when they "know" they're right. It takes a concerted effort to be sure this behavior doesn't take root. - Joel Webber
After this, how about reading the Steve Jobs book (A Regular Guy) for a contrast ;) - Dion Almaer
Sutton actually mentions Jobs a bit in the book. He's got a good blog post on the subject: http://bobsutton.typepad.com/m... - Tom Stocky
There's a fascinating story I heard about on This American Life (taken from this research study: http://books.google.com/books?... ) about how one bad apple can ruin group dynamics, and one of the three identified personality types that can ruin it turns out to be "the jerk," which is probably just another way of saying "asshole." Bottom line: a group performs only as good as its worst member, its "bad apple." Listen to TAL here: http://www.thisamericanlife.or... - Jeff Eddings

I really couldn't eat that packet covered in cheese. I'm not saying I wouldn't like it, but I think all that much fat would simply make me feel nauseous. - Ian May
