KN | Kitsune Noir » Stephane Halleux - http://kitsunenoir.com/blog...
What do you get when you mix the older films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet with the gothic creativity of Tim Burton? I think it would roughly add up to the amazing sculptures of Stephane Halleux. These amazing sculptures are crafted from bits of leather and all kinds of off found objects, things that from another time that have been put together to create these little beauties. It’s crazy how much attention and detail go into these, and they all look they should be characters in some kind of crazy steampunk, stop-motion movie set in a Triplet of Bellesville universe. - Jeff Daly

Improved arm mounted flame thrower - Hack a Day - http://hackaday.com/2009...
[Everett] is at it again with Prometheus, an arm mounted flame thrower. This is the third generation of the project and makes some huge advances over the second generation we saw last year. We’d say he’s reached cinema/stage-performance quality with his design. The self-contained system is completely arm mounted with a fuel reservoir mounting behind the elbow. The new version adds an adjustable flow valve actuated by a servo motor to regulate the flame size. An arc generator has been incorporated to replace the lighter from the last version. A microcontroller measures wrist angle and takes care of creating the arc and regulating the fuel supply. Prometheus is small, controllable, and frightening. See a full demonstration as well as some video of the prototyping process after the break. Does this make you wonder how much burn cream [Evertt's] needed over the years? - Jeff Daly

What Every Computer Scientist Should Know About Floating-Point Arithmetic - http://docs.sun.com/source...
Floating-point arithmetic is considered an esoteric subject by many people. This is rather surprising because floating-point is ubiquitous in computer systems. Almost every language has a floating-point datatype; computers from PCs to supercomputers have floating-point accelerators; most compilers will be called upon to compile floating-point algorithms from time to time; and virtually every operating system must respond to floating-point exceptions such as overflow. This paper presents a tutorial on those aspects of floating-point that have a direct impact on designers of computer systems. It begins with background on floating-point representation and rounding error, continues with a discussion of the IEEE floating-point standard, and concludes with numerous examples of how computer builders can better support floating-point. - Jeff Daly

Image Approximation with Genetically Selected Cosines :: nklein software - http://nklein.com/2009...
I started with the target image here on the right. I then used a genetic algorithm to try to find an approximation of this image as a sum of cosine waves. Each cosine wave has the following form fᵢ(x,y) = Aᵢ cos( 2 π ( x cos θᵢ + y cos θᵢ) ωᵢ + 2 π ϕᵢ ) The genetic algorithm can tweak the amplitude Aᵢ, the orientation in the plane θᵢ, the frequency ωᵢ, and the phase ϕᵢ of each wave. The image at the right here, is from the 443rd generation of a population of 200 where each gene represents 100 cosine waves. For the video below, I used a population of 100 genes, each representing the sum of 50 cosine waves. - Jeff Daly

FireXPath is a Firebug extension that adds a development tool to edit, inspect and generate XPath expressions. With FireXPath you can: - Edit XPath expressions with auto completion (using TAB or up and down arrows). - Evaluate the expression on HTML or any XML documents. - Display the result of evaluations in a Firebug-like DOM tree. - Highlight the results directly on the document displayed by Firefox (works only with HTML documents). - Generate an XPath expression for an element by right clicking on it and selecting "Inspect XPath" located under "Inspect Element". - Define the evaluation context of an XPath expression. - Choose the document in which to evaluate the XPath expression (only applicable for HTML documents with frames or iframes). - Jeff Daly

CulturedCode | Things Touch iPhone app: Text wrapping bug drops one or more input characters - http://culturedcode.com/forums...
filed a bug report on CulturedCode's iPhone app Things Touch: "When typing the title of a new todo, if the word you are typing wraps, the UI drops one or more of the characters you are inputting. It's as if there is a momentary hang while it reformats the wrapped text. It can be quite frustrating. Specs: First Generation iPhone Things Touch 1.3.11 iPhone OS 3.1.2 (7D11)" - Jeff Daly

furumai is a series of a dozen paper plates on which water droplets play around. You can encounter with different movements and behaviour of water by tilting the plate back and forth with a few drops of water on it. The water dances freely on each of the 12 plates, sometimes as if it were a tiny mysterious creature walking with a wagging tail, ameba that repeats dividing, or even a microscopic football, rolling helter-skelter over a field. We hope that playing with furumai gives people a chance to have another look at water that appears virtually anywhere in our lives, in forms of sea, rain, tears and so on or a chance to discover the new dimension of water that usually seems ordinary and familiar in everyday life. - Jeff Daly

Obscura Introduces Better Billiards With CueLight | flylyf - http://www.flylyf.com/obscura...
If you’re looking for a modern edge to a classic game look no further than the Obscura CueLight. It’s literally as if someone took the Microsoft Surface Computer and a pool table, forced them to get married and have a kid…. the CueLight would be their honor student. The CueLight uses a conventional pool table as it’s canvas and the paint brush is an overhead projector equipped with sensors and motion detectors. The projector creates images on the pool table based on how the game is played. As the balls are hit and roll around they reveal an image that seemingly appears underneath. The system is fully customizable with the ability to trail flames behind balls and project a pool of water on the table that ripples with the motion of the balls. Not including the cost of the pool table, the CueLight treatment will run you about $80,000. Scratching on the 8-ball never looked so good! - Jeff Daly
