Probably traveling to family, just not sure which side yet. And I do look forward to being with family. It's usually fairly low-key. I miss seeing my family.
- Sarah June
hanging at home, maybe making dinner for a friend. Anyone else in Tucson orphaned for the holiday? :) (this all assumes that recovery from dental stuff next Thursday goes well and I'm eating solid food by Thanksgiving).
- ÉllbeeÇee
I'm having low-key stuff with my parents - my mom has surgery on that Monday, and if all goes to plan she'll be home that day. If not, we'll hang out with her up in her room and do dinner another night. She has mentioned at least three times she is happy she isn't the one cooking this year :)
- Jennifer Dittrich
I'll be smoking a turkey and all that other stuff. Then visiting the MIL, then the annual Trans-giving/birthday party at friend's house.
- Anika
I'm filling out my time off request as we speak, seeing as one of my bosses is taking off the entire week. I'll probably do something for some of my local orphaned students (especially the international students who we have to inform what Thanksgiving is) and not much else.
- Derrick
Derrick, you can come hang out with us in Altadena if you're not doing anything later that evening. That's usually fun.
- Anika
Altadena is my old stomping ground! I lived there when I was in school. We'll see how things shape up. Thanks for the invite. :)
- Derrick
Going to my parents' house. It's not a big deal for us since we have a small family. And since I don't eat turkey, the meal isn't really anything special for me (yay, green beans and a salad).
- Rochelle
spending the day with the family i spent the day with last year, only this year my friend, their wife and mother, is dead. so it's bittersweet. last year's thanksgiving was the last good time I spent with her. the closer we get to the holidays the harder it is, on them especially of course. ack! sorry to be a downer.
- Sarah is Novembery
Going to San Antonio to Joel's parents house. Cardeen is flying in.
- Michelle Martinez
going home to my parents. it's low-key and and on the small side, for us. which means 15-20 people and tons of food after about half the family does the turkey trot.
- Katie
Spending it alone again. I'm moving back to LA in early Dec and I don't have enough $ for it to make sense for me to jet down there just for T-giving. I wish Trader Joe's still carried Cantella's turkey sausage with cranberries because that's a really simple way to get those flavors. Not sure what I'll make to celebrate yet. I should probably focus on actually giving thanks.
- Spidra Webster
Making cornish game hens for a few of my orphan friends in the area and my sister. It'll be small, but festive. Then on Saturday, all of my friends in the area are gathering for a second Thanksgiving, with turkey and tri-tip on the menu. YUM.
- Cassandra
We (the SO and I) are having our usual guests (a couple & their 10yr old daughter) plus possibly two more. We are getting our usual fried turkey from Popeye's, and making the fixings. Since we are having more I get to make a ham too. (I am thinking Alton Brown's Dr. Pepper ham) It's a very laid back day, we usually get a RPG going, or watch movies. I always look forward to it.
- aden (yeah you heard me)
Flying up to Oakland to visit family in Walnut Creek/Alamo area. Might do the city for my birthday that weekend. Then driving home Sunday
- Katie: Witch Of The West
I'll be away until Thanksgiving. Then, Mr and kids at home for traditional dinner. Oldest daughter has to work that night at Old Navy. When did THAT happen?
- R1CC1
Traveling, but only a few hours up the road to Fort Worth. Spend a few days with my in-laws, who are fantastically good company. Big meal on the day itself at my brother in-law's place. He's a champion at doing the turkey in peanut oil.
- Patrick Jordan
Traveling to visit my in-laws. I'm still trying to decide what I should cook. I'm settled on mac-n-cheese, oatmeal-coconut pie, and some kind of cake. Not sure what else. Maybe a standing rib roast? (Probably not. They only eat roast beef well done. :(
- Ha3rvey (obviously wrong)
Tell me more about this oatmeal coconut pie, harv.
- Derrick
D, I got the recipe from a cannister of Kroger store brand oatmeal. The flavor reminds me of a pecan pie (without the pecans). IIRC, it's got oatmeal, coconut, corn syrup, brown sugar, white sugar, eggs, and salt. It's surprisingly good. I usually substitute maple syrup for most of the corn syrup so that it won't be cloyingly sweet. If I remember when I get home tonight, I'll send it to you.
- Ha3rvey (obviously wrong)
Oatmeal-coconut pie sounds unusual but good.
- Spidra Webster
Popeye's makes a fried turkey for T-giving? *perks ears up*
- Spidra Webster
Spidra, "unusual" is a very good word for it. Everyone who has tried it liked it. I'm trying to remember if it has vanilla in it. I think every good dessert has vanilla.
- Ha3rvey (obviously wrong)
Sounds good. Maybe I'll bust one out for the orphans, Harvey. And yes, Spidra. I think they call it a "cajun" fried turkey, but it's fully cooked. I should order one in case people stop by through the weekend. The picture here is horrible (hint hint, Popeye's, I freelance), but here's a link: http://popeyes.com/turkey.php
- Derrick
Our plans are up in the air right now. Normally, my wife's parents would come to see us but my FIL is being prepped to have his lung removed after a lung cancer diagnosis. We might go to them, but only if her mom doesn't think having company will be too stressful. I know it's not a cheerful answer, but that's life right now.

Hosting my annual orphan Thanksgiving for all my friends who either have no family, live too far or who just don't hang with their family.
- Leslie Poston
Dr. Pepper ham? That sounds good. And I'm impressed with all of you who host a day for people without somewhere else to go. That's so nice!
- Sarah June
No holiday for me, so no travel and no family. Still, might try cooking a turkey on the grill this year.
- Steven Perez
I'm not sure. Often we do Thanksgiving with Ben's family and I look forward to it a lot. This year (as with the last two) they are trying to combine our families, so we'll see. I love my family but the dynamic for Thanksgiving has never been quite right with us. I am also thinking of having some people over that weekend for post-Thanksgiving meals so that I get to play hostess.
- joey
Going to my parents house and helping my mother cook. Maybe bring some wine with me. I don't think I have the kids this year, so I am glad to have my family with me cause I usually get sad.
- Shevonne
Parents, Parents-in-Law, Sister, Aunt-in-Law descend upon us ... FOR A WEEK! Woohoo! (luckily everyone really likes everyone else and we all get along well) (and I have enough comp time that I'll have the week off!) (woo again!)
- Aaron the Librarian
Having a meal of some sort with friends. I'd love to go home, but it's too far to travel for too short a time.
- laura x
We had our big holiday meal (so far I've cooked 3 turkeys), we'll be joining my mom and stepfather.
- Heather Solos
Doing the family dinner tradition, but then Mom and I are escaping for a few days after. Booked a few day trip to Amish country...(this should be interesting). Heading to Lancaster PA from NJ. Getting away from our busy lives and just bringing it down to farm markets, craft shows, and basically getting away...I'm very excited about it actually...Love spending time, One on One with my Mom.
- Bill Heslin
My ex is swiping my kid again (it's supposed to be my year with her) so I'm gonna be at home, watching the cowboys play, eating my turkey sandwich, doing shots of cranberry sauce and gravy, crying into my Stella Artois beverage of choice. Woo to the mudderfuggin' Hoo!
- Morgan Haley
Wanna go to Amish country and eat Shoo fly pie Morgan?: LOL
- Bill Heslin
OH and left out...gonna visit some breweries while there also :)

I have unpaid furlough day Wednesday, holiday Thursday and Friday, and then the weekend off. I don't even like turkey. I hope to hang out with my grownup kids at some point.

We head up north to Santa Barbara and Pismo Beach to get away from family, on Thanksgiving and the week following, to charge up the batteries for Christmas, family, shopping, cooking, etc. ;)

headng to Charleston SC ... for a vaca ,, and having Thanksgiving in the Isle of Palm ...

Lunchtime TG meal with Dave's family, after which I will be hauling arse to cook for TG dinner at my house. Luckily grilling a turkey only takes a few hours...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
3 friends and I will spend time at a local rescue mission serving meals. Give back in small ways.
- Steve
Passing out meals to those in need. +1 to Steve.
- Joe
SIL and fam are coming - I think - they'll have been here for the funeral so I hope they're coming back as planned. And my brother and his wife - my other SIL - will come for their second meal of the day, along with my father. Daughter Sarah, age 19, will be in charge of the kitchen; I'll be sous-chef. Menu will be more contemporary than we could have had in previous years, I'll bet.

The parents are still overseas so it will be Thanksgiving (and Christmas) with the in-laws this year. Mother-in-law is cooking this time (as opposed to the last two years where we just went out to eat). She can throw down in the kitchen so it should be good. I miss my Mom's Thanksgiving meals though.
- Got Love For DB™?
Turkey and all of the fixens' at our house. My parents and the in laws are coming over.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Your parents and in-laws intermingle and your house doesn't explode? Amazing.

Thanksgiving, Denmark-style again this year, though we're doing it the weekend before since there is no Thanksgiving here. Also using it to celebrate my darling husband's 30th year gracing the earth. Seems feeding people good food, complete with lots of hygge, helps break down boundaries in any country. It may not be noble, but it's going to be fun. :D
- Bette Cooper
Before Thanksgiving I've got seven togas to sew, to cater the party they are for (60 people), and try to squeeze in a birthday. I havent even considered Thanksgiving...I've got time, right?
- Shannon
earlier it was Scoble who dominated my feed now it's you Derrick, and guess what last night you were in my dream and i said something funny to you and you held your hand for high five :) (i was viewing webcam of my friend the other night and we wrote something (an emoticon ) together and he held out his hand for high five) dreams are an amalgam and colors spread as if an art piece is under process

They look like Yorkshire Puddings - I've never heard them called popevers!
- WorldofHiglet
No idea what that is, but it looks good!
- Rochelle
WorldofHiglet - they're a lot like Yorkshire Puddings, but usually a tad sweeter (since YP is usually made with drippings, if you can get them). Very, very delicious! (My ex roommate used to make them for breakfast some mornings - I really miss that.)

"In sickening news, the amount of female perpetrators against children in child sex abuse case is on the rise. Childline, a hotline based out of the UK for reporting child abuse cases, has referred to a staggering statistic as of late: the amount of child sex abuse reports involving women as the perpetrators has increased 132% in the past five years. The report also stated additional creepy information such as victims ranging in age from 12-15 as being the majority and that they all knew their abuser."
- Steven Perez
from Bookmarklet
I'm wondering if the number of women abusing is increasing, or whether the stigma has been reduced enough for people to not only believe children when they report abuse, but to report the numbers. In years past, those sorts of reports were dismissed out of hand by people who were unwilling to believe women could do things like that.

Steven - If I have gained a couple (hundred) extra pounds over the years, do I still only have 2000 places, like the commercial states, with them having grown proportionally larger? Or have I actually added 'places'? If the latter, are there products available to help me with the increased places count?

GAH! This headline makes me feel PHYSICALLY ILL -- "Families of DC sniper victims celebrate John Allen Muhammad's execution" -- I am most certainly NOT clicking through to the story!
And yes, I live just a couple hours from where he did all of this. We were all very afraid. But even for this man, I cannot support or agree with the death penalty.
- Ladybug Heather
That's a pretty inflammatory headline. Is it like the Windows 7 Release Party?
- Andy Bakun
Heather, I felt the same thing when I saw that headline.
- joey
I called my mom about this yesterday. I was living in DC at the time they were active, and was one of many that frequented the places they hunted - it was a terrifying time. And still... I can't celebrate his death. I found it relieving when they were captured and tried, but still profoundly sad.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Yeah... and they were tried down here, in Virginia Beach and in Chesapeake. Sentiment ran pretty high, and pretty sickening, for those weeks. The US is a wonderful place to live, but still has a lot to learn from others in the world.
- Ladybug Heather
I lived in DC at the time, and it was frightening to read about the shooting incidents. I was relieved when they were captured. But I can't celebrate Muhammad's death, whether or not it's justified.

He certainly does Roberto! I stopped watching this year mainly because I was annoyed there seemed to be lots of hypocrisy when it came to chosing 'entertainment' over 'talent'. I felt there's not enough time in life to be bothered by things to trivial as x-factor.

3mph (or 20 min per mile) is a standard walking down the sidewalk pace. You might be a bit faster, but you also need to take into account waiting at crosswalks. Probably allot 30 min total

Why do people always point to the DMV as an example of government run poorly? Would you rather that anyone be able to drive a car? Not to mention that I've never had a bad experience at a DMV.
Alex, because they don't have good experiences there like you. And people aren't asking for there not to be a DMV, they are asking for one that is run efficiently.
- Cristo
Because DMVs (in CA cities, at least) are known for their long lines and surly employees.
- Spidra Webster
I've never had a bad experience either in CA or OR.
- Todd Hoff
California DMV system, at least in the Bay Area, has a website showing average wait for each office, so if you go when it's busy you only have yourself to blame.
- Alex Scoble
I recently went to the DMV to register my car. I had to wait about 30 seconds before going up to the window, & the employee I dealt with--a long time DMV employee--was incredibly nice & helpful.
- josh neff, Fun Dip of FF
E.g. I've made an appointment, still waited an hour, and then was told I had to go home and get different paperwork.
- Cristo
Personally, I've never had horrible experiences at a DMV. The only time I had to spend more than an hour there, the clerk was helpful and patient. God knows I needed that because I didn't know how else to go about fixing the problem I had.
- pea ♥ fierce as a woozle
And if we are limited to only the entities we've only had good experiences with that pretty much eliminates everyone, doesn't it?
- Todd Hoff
I have never had a bad experience at the DMV, either, but I have always lived in the boonies where I don't have a long wait. I would probably hate it if I lived in a city.
- Michelle Martinez
The difference between the DMV in CA and the DOL in WA could not be more stark. I hated the DMV, I've never had a remotely bad experience with the DOL.

Alex, I don't think I'll be using you as a guide to the SF DMV since I doubt you've ever even been there.

In fact, I've never had more than two people in front of me in line, and the workers have gone out of their way to be helpful. Maybe, because in WA they separate driver and vehicle licensing, the system is just more efficient.
- Bren, Photophobe

Well, I did love trying to convince the Missouri DMV that I was in Texas at school and was not going to be able to come in person to get my driver's license replaced when it was stolen. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
The only DMVs I remember going to were in LA, Mountain View, and San Francisco. They all were long waits involving bored and semi-rude workers. I find post offices to be similar, which is why I use the UPS store instead.
- Cristo
I've had some shitty experiences with rude, bored employees at fast food places, but that doesn't mean the fast food industry needs to be taken over by the government.
- josh neff, Fun Dip of FF
The DMV isn't all that bad in my experience. It's actually pretty efficient from what I've seen. Now, let's talk about the Department of Human Resources. There is a clusterfuck worth mentioning.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
I realize this is just a coded thread for whether we should have nationalized healthcare, but my comments are specifically about the DMV without expressing any particular opinion on the other topic.
- Cristo
But can you imagine it, Josh? The Triplicate Burger, having a hot dog during the Tax Break...
- Pete
Also, it's obvious from this thread that you'll have widely different experiences depending on which state and city you live in and when you've gone (I've had a driver's license since 1979).
- Cristo
Sorry, Cristo, I used some of the same words as you, but I didn't mean my comment to be targeted at you. I was commenting on how many people will point to bad experiences at the DMV as the reason why goverment-run systems are bad, without considering that corporate-run services aren't any better.
- josh neff, Fun Dip of FF
I've never had any bad DMV experiences per se, but the differences between the DMVs in the Bay Area and the ones here in Reno and Sparks are like night and day.
- Helen Sventitsky
I dislike NJ's DMV - there's always a problem of some sort. But my experience with the DMV in DC has been positive. How's that - the people in Washington turned out to be more efficient than the people outside the Beltway.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
It's an old hackneyed cliche from when they used to be run more poorly. In my experience I've had much worse service/experiences (ie retail returns) with the corporate/private sector than within government funded services including the DMV.
- sofarsoShawn
My only comment is that Cristo's first comment is dead on.
- Jason Huebel
sofarsoShawn, that's a pretty broad generalization. It seems more realistic to frame things in terms of your own experiences, rather than dismissing others.
- Cristo
Each person can have their individual experiences, I think the point most try to make is it is very inefficient to say the least.
- Spencer
I turn into my "hapless rube" mode and have always had good service. Maybe it's the smile, or the saying something nice to them...but it always ends nice.
- Red Lantern Satan-Rage!
I will say that the DMV is better run than Comcast. The government should definitely take over cable services.
- Cristo
@Cristo Don't worry, I'm sure that is some agenda somewhere.
- Spencer
It took my wife 3 tries to get our newly traded-for car registered properly because the people at the counter gave us different answers everytime about which paperwork we needed. I called in before the first visit, wrote down everything we eneded, and then put a packet together for @CPritchett. We still had to try three times to additional papers before they finally let us go.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Spencer, what I'd really like is for the government to level the playing field for cable and internet services. The infrastructure should be owned by the government, just like the Interstate system is. The problem with the cable companies is they have a monopoly in many places, so there is no competition. Hence the suckage, because they don't need to compete by offering better customer support.
- Cristo
@cristo chill out, that's what in my experience means, some people have good ones other's bad
- sofarsoShawn
I didn't understand eithe r(coming from WA), until I lived in MD. Moving my driver's license took over 2 hours. I was the third person in line at the DMV when it opened that morning. There were 5 different lines I had to wait in to fill out a form and talk to a person.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I've only had one bad time at the DMV. Now, it's in-and-out in less than 30 min. It helps they have wait times on the website and have moved so much stuff online.
- Anika
I may be buying a used car, and this thread prompted me to look up what I need to do in DC. <sob> I don't understand... I think their website is just not very good... a case of too much of the wrong information
- Jason
Jason, a friend recently bought a car and had it registered in DC. It didn't seem to be too much trouble. I suppose it mostly depends on whether you're buying it from a dealer or an individual.
- pea ♥ fierce as a woozle
An individual, it's already tagged in DC and I can't tell if the tags transfer with the title or not? Also, it says to retitle the car in the new owners name and 15 days later you get it in the mail, then come back to register???? So I was confused and if the car is untagged while you wait, or you get temp plates? I did find that the inspection sticker stays with the car, so that's good.
- Jason
Because the DMV is one of the few government institutions that almost every person in the U.S. deals with on a personal level. Sure, we all deal with the IRS, but that's a faceless group (and it gets its fair share of derision, obviously, as well). When dealing with the DMV, we all deal with individuals, so there's a much larger base of people that have experience from which to pull negative comments.
- Curtiss Grymala
The bay area wait times are a lie, no matter when you go, you will have to wait for no reason. I always get an appointment and have never made it out in less than an hour. Wouldn't be so bad, if the employees acted like they at least cared. The computers that they use have to be from the 80's. It's like Calif. forgot about them and never upgraded.
- Davis Freeberg
I've never had to wait more than 10 min. at the local (Gilroy, CA) DMV office.
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
That's not a bad idea, except the last time I visited Gilroy I got a speeding ticket.

I'm not a fan of gift cards. They are a ripoff by the stores. Many gift cards lose their value after a short time if not used, and they restrict the receiver to one store.
In retail, "breakage" is the percentage of gift cards that are never redeemed. Financially you have to recognize the liability forever, unless the state allows the retailer to start siphoning off the worth of the card over time. The breakage rate in general is astounding. For some types of retailers' gift cards, up to 40% are not redeemed, meaning the retailer gets to keep the cash as profit.
- Stephen Mack
I believe CA state law doesn't allow Gift Cards to be devalued...
- Ken Gidley
In WA gift cards can't have an expiration date. (I'm also not generally a fan of them, as they're restrictive, unless I know that is where someone shops all of the time.)
- Jennifer Dittrich
MVB - The AmEx ones slowly devalue, as well. I think the key in buying gift cards is to make sure that they are from a store (or restaurant) that someone uses regularly. If you buy me a gift card for a place like Cabela's, chances are I'll never use it, and will probably end up giving it away. If you buy me a gift card for WalMart or Outback or something, I'll definitely use it.
- Curtiss Grymala

I'm always on the fence with Gift Cards. As Stephen Mack clearly stated, there are many cards that are never redeemed. This could be due to the person lost it, doesn't shop there or always forgets to bring it. I try to give cards to those that I know have use the ones I've given in the past. If I didn't hear about your restaurant experience or find out what you bought, it makes me rethink the following year.

BTW- "breakage" is never a term I want to hear from someone at TiVo. I'm still quite happy with my two Lifetime Series 2s (upscaled to 1080i), thank you very much.... :-)
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I cannot agree more. Gift cards are just a way to get out more cash out of your pocket.
- ashish
Gift cards scream "I'm socially responsible enough to know I need to get you a gift at this point in time, but here, you pick it out, I can't be bothered."
- SAM
Why is it socially responsible to give people things at particular points in time? Something is seriously wrong with a society that depends on consumerism to thrive.
- Cristo
Convention? i.e. Birthday, Christmas ect... I think gift cards are cop outs at these times... gift cards given randomly=awesome.
- SAM
Why are we required to give gifts for birthdays and at Christmas? We have other conventions in society too, like when cigarette smokers their leave butts on the sidewalk when they're done with them.
- Cristo
I think gift giving can be a symbolic/thought filled/beautiful gesture even if, and sometimes especially when tied into a cultural convention. I just think the style/extravagance/consumerism aspect has gone too far... as we Americans and humans in general have a tendency to do.
- SAM
I have another convention that I've been following. It's called Craiglisting all the gifts that people give me and not buying stuff for people they don't need or want.
- Cristo
Are you completely anti-gift Cristo? If so, why?
- SAM
+1 SAM. These gestures are done with special yearly occasions because unfortunately we don't do them everyday or very rarely for no reason. So, it's a lazy way for us to remind yourself that you are appreciative of that person for all those times you never acknowledged it throughout the year.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
SAM, no. I give lots of gifts, but I rarely do it when I'm "suppose to." The reason I don't like receiving gifts unless it's something I really want, is because it creates extra work for me. This is more acute of late as I've been getting rid of stuff for the last three years thats accumulated over a lifetime. I also don't like the waste of natural resources and pollution that are caused by all the consumerism when it's unnecessary.
- Cristo
I agree on the "receiving gifts unless it's something I really want" part. That's why I personally like Gift Cards given to me (but from specific places).
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Anybody ever say "I already have this" or "look, my 50th Hawaiian shirt" while sitting around the Christmas tree? But my absolute favorite gifts are the ones engraved with your name, with your birthday or anniversary, and maybe your social security number, just to make sure you can't get rid of it. :)
- Cristo
Yes, I have admittedly. It's hard not to show disgust but some people are just horrible gift givers and they just don't get it. BUT it's the thought that counts even though I'd rather of had no gift than the one actually given (year after year). People know I'm picky, I sense you are too but their are still people who it's not clicked. Try to open that one gift up with a smile, get rid of the gift later.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I like a lot of what you and Mark are saying here... For me... gifts=good if they a) have thought behind them b) hit the target - i.e. are actually useful/appreciated by that person. Otherwise, i'd rather do without as well. Bad gifts to me just say someone doesn't really know me or has picked something up in haste to just go through the holiday motions = useless consumerism. What are some great gifts though? What's the best one you've ever gotten?
- SAM
+1 Ken! Fun tip: if you have an expired gift certificate, take it on a CA vacation or give it to a friend in CA. You can use them here.
- Friday Lo is Friday!
A Snow Blower. Why? It wasn't because it was expensive. The December before I had just moved into my first house. As a joke, I left on my parent's answering machine a message that apparently I sung "All I want for Christmas is a Snow Blower" during a major snow storm after shoveling. Naturally I completely forgot about this event. The next year, they got me one and I didn't expect it....

The only thing that comes to mind in recent years is leather driving gloves and a case of wine (Opolo) I liked. When I was a kid, there were lots of gifts I loved. E.g. Flexible Flyer sled, G.I. Joe stuff, bike, trampoline, swing set.
- Cristo
It doesn't take a lot of money to come up with the perfect gift. What it takes is thought, and that thought is easy when you really care about someone. If I told you the best gift I ever got wasn't for me and it consisted of a couple of used books, a bag of rice, some chopsticks, ginger, soy sauce, etc; would you believe me? http://cranialsoup.blogspot.com/2006...

In Germany per law gift cards are good for X years no matter what the gift card says about its expiry date (e.g. minimum 2 years, not sure exactly). Not every store owner knows this law though, and service is often bad in Germany, so good luck investing energy to stand up for your right :)
- Philipp Lenssen
Even if they don't lose value, a huge percentage are never redeemed -- lost, stolen, or stuck away somewhere, possibly because the recipient has no nearby locations.

April: "What it takes is thought, and that thought is easy when you really care about someone. " -- Thought is rarely easy for me these days. Figuring out what people want that they don't already have seems like an unnecessary waste of time unless I'm an expert at something they are not.
- Cristo
And "the thought" in my case, is not to give me anything. That is the thought I am most appreciative of.
- Cristo
@Cristo That's the thing, you don't have to "figure it out". When you care about someone, they are in your thoughts when you are apart. Those thoughts will guide you if you let them. You will see (or hear) things that remind you of them, constantly. That is where the gift ideas come from. Buy whatever makes you think of them. I can't shop for people I don't care about. It's forced...

April, it's good you know how every other person thinks and feels. I must be from an alien race.
- Cristo
My gifts are not based on what they think and feel. I give from my thoughts and feelings.
- April Russo (app103)
So do I. Which is why I don't subscribe to corporate calls for gift giving at specified times of the year.
- Cristo
It took a long time to get my husband to understand what I was talking about and stop giving me cash for Christmas. I got really tired of it one year and handed him back the cash and sent him out and told him to spend it on anything and everything that reminded him of me. He never made it past the supermarket on the corner and I ended up with some odd gifts, but it showed me what was...

The gift I give my wife is helping to clean out all the crap people have given us. It's the thought that counts, and the thought should be "Don't waste resources and fill people's living spaces up with crap."
- Cristo
If you read the blog post I linked to, you would have seen that the most thoughtful gift I was referring to was when someone made my daughter smile, by applying the same gift giving principles I was talking about. He cared about me, and therefore listened to me, and got to know my daughter through me. He sent her a gift that was so perfect for her, yet none of her real life friends knew...

April, I don't remember if I read your blog post. My general principle stands. Are there exceptions? Probably. But the reality is that as a macro phenomenon, it's not a net good. And sorry if I didn't read your blog post, but I'm not too into blogs. I'm on FriendFeed for the conversation, and not much else.
- Cristo
Also, why was your husband giving you cash as a gift? Seems weird. My wife buys whatever she wants, so the only time I need to give her cash is if she hasn't gone to the ATM lately.
- Cristo
Maybe I come from a different world than you. There are no ATM machines and we rarely ever have money in our pockets. I usually don't get what I need, nevermind what I want. I usually have to make due with whatever we have and make it work in ways it was never intended.
- April Russo (app103)
Um, okay. If you are poor and live somewhere that is technology repressed, I feel for you. But shouldn't that motivate you to save or work towards changing that position? It doesn't seem like a good argument for the consumeristic gift-giving I'm arguing against.
- Cristo
My gift giving usually isn't very consumerist and I am frugal to a fault. And I am working to change that position I am in, but currently we are in a very deep hole and it is taking a long time for me to dig us out of it. If you want to help, I have some software on my site you can try, and if you like it you can donate what you think the software is worth. http://appsapps.info

"Marry a teacher" is not a workable healthcare option for most people...this is why need a national healthcare standard that gives equal access to high quality health care for all citizens.
not that there's anything wrong with marrying a teacher ...
- Chris Rogers
Indeed...It's how I'm getting good health insurance!

here too - it's a nice fringe benefit!
- Chris Rogers
I know in WA, you do get the option to be covered, but spousal coverage can be prohibitively expensive (not to mention if you commit the sin of also being a teacher - no double coverage.) Even your plan could use some help in some places :)

Vegans don't make their food look like meat. Vegetarians might but surely not vegans.
- Amit Morson
I eat quorn products and presume that the burgers are shaped like burgers to fit in the buns just as meat patties do.
- Charlotte M
Yeah, like Charlotte, vegetarian burgers just fit nicely on the buns.
- Rochelle
I think patties and sausage/tube shapes are just convenient food-shapes; veggie burgers don't make me think of meat-burgers. Tofu grilled to look like bacon, that's deliberate (and a bit silly).
- Jennifer Dittrich
I am not a vegan or vegetarian, but I've often wondered the same thing. I went to a vegetarian friends house for dinner and she had these nut based 'chops' made to look just like lamb. I wasn't at all impressed with the taste. On the other hand, I've been to some vegetarian restaurants, where there was no psuedo-meat things in sight, and the food was excellent, and i didn't miss the meat at all, as although I eat meat, I don't think it's mandatory with every meal either!
- Ian May
Jennifer, why silly? I love Morningstar fake bacon. I think it'd be weird to eat something bacon flavored but that was made in the shape of Cheerios or something.
- Rochelle
I don't think it's all that weird. Most people (Americans, anyway) grew up eating meat, andt's hard to break expectations of what a meal should look and taste like. I'm not a vegetarian, but I much prefer the taste of non-meat-like vegetarian dishes to the meat-like products.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
was just looking at Tofurkey, it DOES look like meat! (with a lot of good-looking stuffing) I agree with John (a.k.a. dendroica) tho, non-meat-like veg is better!
