Scoble, Alex Scoble
What's the term for someone who means well, but because of their mannerisms, lack of social skills, etc. still manages to annoy people around them?
And is there a term for people who get mad at people, even though those people aren't purposefully trying to make them mad? - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Hehe, Cecily. And CW, I don't think you can be an asshole without intent. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
And you aren't an asshole, at least from what I can tell. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
just "awkward"? - Meryn Stol
Anika. Actually, I don't lack social skills. I just choose not to use them. A lot. Especially with people who seem to think rude is the norm. If you can dish it, then take it. - Anika
Savant. - Jered Hofker
friendfeeder? ;) - Scoble, Alex Scoble
We call them engineers. - SteVe C
Steve Urkel? Yeah, that came out of nowhere. - Victor Ganata
Damn, Victor...I've been equated to a lot of things in my time, but not Urkel. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
social retard? - Morgan
I'd say socially inept, It that's an adjective, not a noun. - Jandy
Round here, those people are known as "Scobles" ;-) - Slippy
We're not the only ones that fit the bill here, Slippy. :) - Scoble, Alex Scoble
I know, but you were there, and you got that great big bullseye painted on you and everything. - Slippy
MacBook and iPhone users. * runs * - John Craft

I know there's been a ton of speculation and breath-holding. So, without further ado, I'd like to announce, right here on FF, my latest PopTart crush: Taylor Swift.
Couldn't you pick someone with talent? - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Then that would negate her being a "Pop" Tart, no? - JA Castillo
Christina Aguilera is a "pop tart" and she can sing. Taylor Swift is just your typical "blonde" eyecandy pretending to be a country singer. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
I have to disagree Alex. Taylor Swift is as good a Country singer as most and she writes some very good songs (especially considering she's so young). - Kenton
In Taylor's defense, she's a better talent than Carrie Underwood! - JA Castillo
eww. - ::Kristen::
talent? let's stay on topic, kids. ;) - Anthony Citrano from BuddyFeed
OK, she's pretty hawt. - Kenton
In a folksy, nerdy kind of way. - Kenton
folksy? Kenton don't you dare ruin this for me. - Anthony Citrano from BuddyFeed
I didn't mean that as a bad thing Anthony. Maybe she needs to appear without her headband periodically and I would be less inclined to use the term. - Kenton
I wouldn't classify her as "PopTart" material: she lacks the apparent superficiality of most pop stars. I'm not completely in sync with celebrity news, but from what I do see, she isn't one of these pop stars who is constantly being hawked by the press and paparazzi over clubbing and DUIs. You know, normal pop star stuff. - Carlton Prest
Anthony, I am going to need to see some evidence of crush-worthiness. Feel free to use the Beautiful Women group if you have to. - Alex Scrivener
@alex scoble: xtina was a PopTart ten years ago. - Anthony Citrano
Upon further reflection and research, I'm wondering if it was a great idea to make this pronouncement based only on a cursory review of an editorial spread in Glamour. - Anthony Citrano
I'm wondering if Anthony intended to admit he reviews Glamour magazine... - FFing Enigma
Talent is just a crutch for people who aren't pretty enough to make it on looks alone. - Jered Hofker
*thinks about it* Yep, still gay. - Derrick

I'VE GOT SOMETHING TO PUT IN YOU! @RAPatton You're close! They played Danger! High Voltage for the garter toss. =) - Jered Hofker

Ugh, I hate doing a resume. I never know which direction to go...
CVs are hard to write but I've learnt a lot from others and my previous managers have helped. I also had a CV writing company rewrite mine, which improved it a lot. I find it hard to write what I do. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
I'm no expert, but happy to help. - Kol Tregaskes
I can sympathise - I had to do mine last week. Maybe you could crowd-source it? :) - WoH: Minding her Steves
Usually, it is best to write from left to right... :P - JA Castillo
Looking atyour LinkedIn, you have plenty of experience, so I would go chronological - Shevonne
Once I get something I don't hate I'm going to post the txt here and get some feedback. I'm still jetlagged, not to mention stressed, so I'm sure my spelling/grammar/train of though could use a lot of help. At this point it's just frustrating putting information from my two most recent jobs since they were so different (both the duties and the companies). The last place was small so there weren't corporate recognition programs like at MCI: the newest section looks teeny tiny! - FFing Enigma
Create a 'master' CV that includes *everything*, then (for each position you apply to) cut it down to what's most relevant for that position. - Michael R. Bernstein
Do the same for a cover letter. - Michael R. Bernstein
Yep, I have about 10 different covering letters depending on the job I'm applying for. I sometimes tweak my CV too for each. - Kol Tregaskes
I always change up the cover letters per job (a set format per type of job and drop in the appropriate information where necessary). The biggest difference between the two jobs at this point is the awards/honors, so that might be the section I drop in/out based on what I'm applying for. - FFing Enigma

That's one of the nice things about Open Office, actually: I can save my doc as a PDF natively. - FFing Enigma

Microsoft released a plugin for Office 2007 that does that as well (http://www.microsoft.com/downloa...). Also, totally with you on the resumes. - Jered Hofker

Doesn't anyone make an alarm clock radio with a digital radio tuner? I can't find one. Every single one I find is using the old style analog tuning wheel. Even the Timex that says "digital tuning" apparently is not what I'm looking for.
There must be one! I was after a shower digital radio/MP3 player but couldn't find one. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
i just use my ipod hooked into a small set of portable speakers - Justin Long
There must be one. I have an iPod boombox with radio and the radio is digital only. I'd actually RATHER have a turning wheel. - Spidra Webster
I want to wake up to NPR...not music. My current clock radio drifts away from NPR because it's an an analog tuner. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
What kind of quality are you looking for? I've got one of these and love it (but it's pricey): http://www.ccrane.com/radios... - Jered Hofker
i download bunches of npr podcasts and play them in my ipod lots of times. course it wouldn't be precisely current. - Justin Long
The iHome has a digital AM/FM tuner IIRC - Bwana ☠
Something under $50...and next person that tells me they use their iPod for an alarm gets kicked in the privates. Just sayin'! - Scoble, Alex Scoble from IM

Thanks Bwana...A little more than I wanted to spend, but works. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Yeah, freggin thing is expensive - Bwana ☠
I can't understand why they make analog wheel tuners any more. They are so much harder to place exactly on the station. - S of 2C
Yeah, but not ugly and not Sony. - Scoble, Alex Scoble from IM

Its hard to find a good quality one in the UK that's not digital by default. - Jim Connolly
This is a puzzling topic, why do we still have analog radio tuners? - Bwana ☠
I prefer them. I feel like I an get the station better. Sometimes the station drifts and if a digital radio tuner only has exact points, it can't really get the in-between places a station might drift to. - Spidra Webster
The Emerson is an analog tuner as well...I'll look closer at the Sony you linked to...thanks Justin and everyone. - Scoble, Alex Scoble from IM
I've looked for the same thing on and off for years, specifically for when NPR goes into fund raising mode and I want to flip between KQED and KALW without fumbling with a dial :-) I used a GPX CR4004DT http://www.amazon.com/dp... until I bought a Roku SoundBridge Radio, which is the coolest alarm clock EVER. - Ken Sheppardson

And it has digital radio tuner? - Scoble, Alex Scoble from IM

I'm a little surprised you're not on Windows 7 yet :) - Ryan Versaw
The laptop on the right is Win7. My main box is Server 2008. I just haven't had time for a day of downtime getting everything set back up yet. I'm waiting for our current coding phase to finish so that I can upgrade, though. Yeah, three monitors. Middle is a 24", left is 22", and right is a 17" I think. I've only been here a year, so I'm happy I was able to collect this many so far. - Jordan Hofker
Stolee, I'm pretty sure we have the photo from you guys at home in the kitchen. :-) - Jordan Hofker
Clark, I do, too, but I figured I shouldn't complain. When we start, your monitors options are two 22"s or one 24". My boss chose for me before I started, so I ended up with the 24". At home I have dual 23's, though. :-) - Jordan Hofker

if I ever shaved it would be with those - bear (aka Mike Taylor)
IMHO this is how men should do it. Let alone the saving, and money. It teachs you how to be calm, how to do things like men do: "avec classe". The fast-food... fast-everything mentality is ruining good ol' things :) - directeur
Agreed. I've always used a brush and soap. It's my morning meditation. - Rob H.
I shave with a brush and mug shaving soap but as far as razors, I'm sticking with a modern computer-aided design, vibrating triple-blade. - Mark Davidson from BuddyFeed
I've been thinking about this a lot lately because I'm tired of giving Gillette all my money. Those quadruple blades are a rip off. I get a great shave, but it ain't cheap. Plus, I like the idea of creating a ritual and exploring and buying all the accoutrements. - Graham English
I'm 32 and to be honnest I still have a very smooth and fragile skin, but I don't fear to cut myself. Sure I used to cut myself when I was 15-16, but now it's all zen :) - directeur

Matthew: It's true. Depilatory cream is another popular option. /Jews have 'fros too. - Mark Davidson from BuddyFeed
Tis true. I used to use a depilatory until I just let my facial hair grow out. More often than not, I have a beard, but the commercial mass market razors have gotten better. - Derrick

My alum block lasts years. Years I say. I have had it for 3 years and it is like new - Jeff (Team マクダジ ) from iPhone
Matthew - maybe I have a wuss face , but if I do that my face is destroyed by a gazillion ingrown hairs. I go with grain, then across grain, and I get a baby butt smooth shave. - Jeff (Team マクダジ ) from iPhone

That's how my late husband shaved - and he used his father's old safety razor, with a shaving mug and badger brush. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Anyone looking to start needs to check out Mantic59's videos on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user... --- I've been shaving this way for the last couple of years and the only downside is that it's somewhat time consuming. Fortunately, my boss doesn't care whether I'm clean-shaven every morning, so I shave every couple-few days and it works great. - Jered Hofker
Yeah, Jared. I spent a good hour watching most of his videos. Great stuff. - Graham English
Graham, at any point did you start to feel like a creep for spending so much time watching a dude shave? =) - Jered Hofker
LOL I definitely laughed at myself for watching a dude shave for so long. Laughed at him too. He's pretty corny but made me laugh out loud a few times. :) He's like the David Pogue of shaving. - Graham English
Thanks for posting this Graham! I usually have a full beard but have been experienting w/ a clean shave lately. I bought an electric razor month ago and it just hacks my face up. My shave seems to better w/ disposable razors. I'm going to try out this method to how this works. How long does one razor last? Black guys generally do have more issues w/ ingrown hairs and I'm no exception. - Vaughn from BuddyFeed
Razor life depends a lot on how coarse your facial hair is, from what I understand -- think I usually get 3-5 shaves out of a blade. When you can get good blades for $0.20 each, that's not so bad. =) http://www.amazon.com/Derby-E... - Jered Hofker
Never thought of it that way, but I can definitely see the David Pogue there. lol - Jered Hofker

Conservative Activist Forwards Racist Pic Showing Obama As Witch Doctor | TPMMuckraker
"The election of our first black president has brought with it a strange proliferation of online racism among conservatives. And we've got the latest example. On Sunday night, Dr. David McKalip forwarded to fellow members of a Google listserv affiliated with the Tea Party movement the image below. Above it, he wrote: "Funny stuff."" - Steven Perez from Bookmarklet
Ah, the shoe's on the other foot and they don't seem to like it. For eight years we were subjected to a variety of caricatures of President Bush. Now we're told that to do so is racist. Hmmm. - Craig Eddy
And then they have the gall to call Sotomayor a racist. LOL! LOL!! LOL!! The self-parodying party. - iTad
I wish they'd stop referring to Obama's plan as socialist. It's false advertising. If it really were socialized medicine, I'd be more enthusiastic about Obama's plan. - John (bird whisperer)
And you know what? The only people who get bent out of shape when they hear the "socialist" word are the others in the right-wing. It's lost any punch it had with the middle and the left, so it has no rhetorical effect any more. Every time I hear the word now, I just laugh. Maroons. - Ladyepiphanybug
Craig, caricatures in and of themselves aren't automatically racist. - Andrew C (✓)
Obviously, Andrew. But because Obama is half black, any caricature made could be called racist. Why does depicting him as a medicine man mean it's "racist"? Because most "medicine men" were Native Americans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...) - Craig Eddy
Dude...WTF - Rah-PM 2012
And for full disclosure, I despise any such depictions of our presidents, regardless of party. The office deserves more respect that this, but it is not racist. - Craig Eddy
Yeah, it is, Craig. - Steven Perez
Can you really post articles about the R's wanting to keep the "rich white man" in power one day and say this is racist the next without feeling a bit hypocritical? - Jered Hofker
"Because most "medicine men" were Native Americans " - and yet the emailer himself said it was depicting Obama as an African witch doctor. More specifically, this is racist because it gets back to depicting minorities as wild savages. Some things simply will not mean the same thing if you invert the race of the depicted person, because to do so ignores the context of racism in America. - Andrew C (✓)
Jered - talking about race or racial issues is not /being/ racist, so I fail to see where you've drawn out any hypocrisy. - Andrew C (✓)
So racial "blindness" is one way. It's not inherently racist to say that white people are keeping the minorities down, but it's totally targeted and racially motivated when you mock up the most powerful man in the free world in a joke about health care. You're issue picking. I'm not saying it isn't disrespectful, but you're purporting to understand the intent behind why some guy typed... more... - Jered Hofker
If the photo wasn't racist, then why would the AMA need to act on it? - Steven Perez
I could care less what party you're in. That photo looks pretty racist to me. It reminds me of those old propaganda cartoons from back in the day except Obama's skin isn't actually black (#000000). Also, rich white men ARE in power. How is pointing that fact out racist? It just is. - Rah-PM 2012
@Jered: If 'common sense' means thinking that portraying Obama as an African witch doctor is no more racist than talking about how the R's are trying to preserve the system's current biases in favour of the rich, the white, and the male, then you can keep it. - Andrew C (✓)
Sorry, I take the "common sense" back. Call it built up frustration at the direction my FF feed (is that redundant?) is going this week. Here's the thing: You say that you KNOW the artist had racist intent because he rendered our President as an "African" Witch Doctor. Then you say that you don't see anything racist about holding a belief that the system deliberately favors whites...... more... - Jered Hofker
From my point of view, at least, the R's and the D's are two sides of the same coin, keeping everyone distracted on superficial issues while moving us toward a mutual goal of control. Hope you'll forgive me for venting. I'm getting frustrated with both sides, here. Also, drinking + FF makes this stuff INTENSE =) - Jered Hofker
The President being black doesn't mean there isn't systemic racism any more. - Andrew C (✓)
Given the consistent level of invective that has somehow passed for "humor" concerning this president, I fail to see how this photo isn't racist. - Steven Perez
And quite frankly, I'm at a loss as to why excuses need to be made for people who are clearly not interested in any kind of honest debate about policy, but seem to wallow in juvenile, grade-school antics and then try to backtrack and tell those of us who take offense at their chicanery that somehow it's our fault for not "getting the joke". - Steven Perez
hey, if you don't believe this to be racist, you share as much of a screwed up, ignorant mentality as what fuels this McKalip guy. people like you all need to reassess your values and ethics 'cause you just ain't living right if you're willing to give a pass to these kinds of actions. - Cee Bee
If you think that this sort of thing is okay and not racist, it's time to pull your huge head out of your tight ass. - ::Kristen::
"Given the consistent level of invective that has somehow passed for "humor" concerning this president,"...wait, which president are we talking about? - Craig Eddy
Yeah, I kinda left that one out there for ya, Andrew. Steven, George Bush was consistently the brunt of a similar stature of "humor" (redneck, retard, looks like a monkey, etc.). It's all disrespectful toward both the men and the Office, but it comes from both sides. The people who make those jokes are never interested in a straightforward debate, and, quite honestly, that's probably for the best. Cee Bee, Kristen, that's the blanket hatred I'm talking about. You're contributing. - Jered Hofker
Jered, yes, GWB got a lot of relatively crude insults, but _those were not racist_. I mean, I think the claims that Obama's actually kind of dumb and inarticulate without a teleprompter are stupid, but those aren't racist either. OTOH, this picture is, because, well, it is racist. - Andrew C (✓)
And for the record, I'm not saying I never laughed at a GW joke, or an Obama joke, or a Monika & Bill joke. What I'm saying is that I dislike how both sides "dish it out, but can't take it". - Jered Hofker
I never said I wasn't interested in a straightforward debate. I also never said that the caricatures of Bush were okay either, so don't say that I'm "contributing" to anything. Bush was made fun of because he said stupid shit and made up words that didn't make sense. I shouldn't have to explain why this photo of Obama is racist. If you're going to attack our current President, do it in... more... - ::Kristen::
Andrew, I understand what you're saying, but my point was that the level of hate is the same -- they're both extremely derogatory. I'm not sure it's productive to differentiate that on race anymore, but that's probably a different discussion. Edit: Err, at least I think that was my point? I might have to read up -- this conversation is slipping away. ;-) - Jered Hofker
Jered: "They did it first"? Yeah, not a good argument. - Steven Perez
i'm contributing to hate here? nah, dude. you're completely wrong about that. if you're a shithead and think this is justifiable or benign in any way, prepare to get called out on it because it's absolutely not. i'm not about to tolerate intolerance just because someone thinks this contributes to the tug of war between political affiliations. this goes beyond those limits. there's just no room for this kind of nonsense. - Cee Bee
Indeed, Cee Bee. If anyone has to make a single excuse for this, they're the ones who are "contributing." - ::Kristen::
I guess Derrick was right earlier: "Interesting to me that people who often call out the lack of/overuse of the claims of racism are rarely victims of it." - Steven Perez
Derrick ++ then! (and Steven gets the assist) - Andrew C (✓)
Kristen, I absolutely agree: It's all counterproductive. Steven, I wasn't going for a "they did it first" there. You'd have to go back deeper than the history I've got. It's a distraction. It happens from both sides. That was really my whole point from the beginning. You've hit a lot of stories lately about the Evil Conservatives and I just happened to pick this particular thread, so I... more... - Jered Hofker
Oh shoot, forgot to respond to Derrick/Steven's comment: That's a great line, but somewhat unfair. A lot of the ones who are MOST sensitive to racial issues are those same people. Also, I have no idea why the AMA is getting involved, Steven. Did a Doctor make the image? =o - Jered Hofker
Clumsy dodge, because it avoids the obvious: the picture is racist, and he spread it. - Steven Perez from IM
Oh, and discovering the boundaries of what is or isn't racist is never counterproductive. Merely not pleasant. - Steven Perez from IM
Oh, lol. The "conservative activist" is an MD. I wasn't trying to dodge; I just wasn't paying attention. - Jered Hofker
Parties picking at each other is counterproductive. Racism conversations are definitely unpleasant. - Jered Hofker
And again: pointing out specific acts of stupidity does not equate to party identity. - Steven Perez from IM
It doesn't, but a guy starts to notice a trend. You're entitled to your opinion and the good moments are still good. I just don't know if you're marriage material anymore? I- I hope we can still be friends. ;-) Have a good night! - Jered Hofker
So much for intelligent conversation. - Steven Perez from IM
Sorry, my mommy always told me not to go to bed mad? I'd like to take one more stab at this, since this guy's having his career ruined (no one cares about that because he's a "*gasp* Conservative"): This guy received this email, clicked Forward, typed "Funny Stuff" or something and hit Send. Palin's Resignation: The Edited Version
Wow... that's some very basic editing to a clumsy draft. Sigh. I wouldn't have let that original ever carry MY name. :-( - Ladyepiphanybug
It seems very possible that she's receiving absolutely no counsel on these speeches. - Graham English
Thank god the other side didn't win. Geesh. - Joshua Schnell
Well, the least she could have done was edit her own speech, then! Or ask her husband or a friend or SOMEONE to get a second set of eyes on it. Lord. - Ladyepiphanybug
You're right. And that's the point. She's insular. - Graham English
I'm confused. Did they edit a transcript or an actual draft of the speech? This looks like someone at the Federal News Service transcribed what she said. Not saying it was a good speech (it wasn't), but that does make a difference. Also, Vanity Fair's floating-in-your-face ads suck! - Jered Hofker
Jared, it was a transcript. But generally, people read speeches. So I doubt she said anything different from the written speech except for maybe the intro and some nervous transitions. - Graham English
I so enjoyed this, though it's shocking to think this was Palin's final version of the speech, considering how painfully awkward it was. It's clear that the highly paid operatives that came along w/ the McCain team are now long gone. The sheer rambling incoherence of this speech—and all that it unintentionally reveals about her—oy. I wanted to be even harder on this than the Vanity Fair eds were. (Must be nice to have a team of eds, griped the entire lit/copyedit/rsch dept.) :) - Ayşe E.

Your picture looks all weird and mostly green? I give up - Rasmus Lauridsen
Jered, Helvetica, baby. It is one of the choices for a theme here at FF. I love it because it is minimal and yes it is white. One thing I have found out about FF is that it is not boring. - Brent - Yes I am
I have an aversion to Wil Wheaton. - Derrick
Rasmus, My picture is green, or at least a lot of it. Excuse me, but I don't have Photoshop, so I swapped colors with a jet black background with the lime green. You know what would be great? The ability to strip out @replies from Twitter that get fed into our FF streams with no context or easy links to the original tweet. This works well in the Facebook Twitter app, which strips out anything I tweet starting with '@'.
I agree. At least preview the original tweet (maybe a greasemonkey script can help here). - Thomas
Long time request :D - Johnny from iPhone
What a great idea! o.O - Anika
I agree, @replies do not need to be fed into the FF stream. I would love to see FF fix this. It is rather annoying to see them... - Randy Shapiro
I like the idea. Would this include retweets or just tweets where @username is first in the tweet? - Tony Miller
Probably just @reply tweets. I'd love to at least see an option to turn them off. - Thomas
Tony- people retweet several different ways: RT, "retweeting:", or sometimes (via @user), so that might be a little trickier. Losing replies would help a lot, though! In fact, I started @replying a lot more when Twitter stripped them out of others' feeds when both parties were not being followed, since I felt like I was bugging people less. Here, it's still contributing to noise. - Sarah Lane
It's especially messy if you comment here and elect to also send it as an @reply via the FF option... - Thomas
We could nag FF about this. - George Brickner
Love the idea! - Bonnie Foster
How about an option to strip out @ replies UNLESS they are addressed to you? - George Brickner

I like it the way it is. Find lots of people I should be following by following the @ trail. - Justin Whitaker
As an experiment I tried hiding ALL Twitter traffic on Friendfeed - and I've left it that way. I don't miss it at all. From time to time I'll check what I'm missing (there's a "show hidden entries" link at the bottom of the page) and there's very rarely anything worth noting. - Leo Laporte
Funny how I find this exact same thing desirable on the Twitter side, but completely agree with you in the context of FF. - Jered Hofker
There is a link to the original tweet, it's just not obvious. On a FF post that came from Twitter, click on the word "Twitter" and you'll find it's a link to the original tweet (the URL has statuses/big_number in it). From there, you can click on "in reply to whoever" to see what the reply was actually to. - Otto
That is a good idea. Add a way to filter out #FollowFriday and I am a very happy man - Asgeir
I agree with Leo though. I hid all twitter entries from my stream (unless they have comments or likes), and this definitely cut down the noise. I figure if they had likes or comments on them, then they might contain something of interest. - Otto
If everyone did that, would any tweets get comments or likes? :) If I can get rid of just the @reply's, I'll be a happy man... - Thomas
Though there are many versions of the re-tweet, it'd be nice to at least filter out anything starting with RT. - mark

It makes me sick to my stomach that people think a black president means racism is over. He is the exception not the rule.
He's a positive step, but no, not the destination by himself - Kamilah Reed (K. Gill) from email
Racism is not over because we have a black President. However (and I mean this as a genuine question), at what point are we no longer benefited by acknowledging its presence or treating it as a special form of hatred? I live in Nebraska and I can tell you that we've encountered bigotry, but I can also tell you that the vast majority of the people here won't tolerate it, even as a joke. - Jered Hofker
Not sure I understand the question, Jered. - Rah-PM 2012
Not long ago, I watched a white man scream at a hispanic man so many racial things I wanted to cry on the spot for this person. It was broad daylight outside. It's not a black/white issue but a human issue and I agree -- it has not stopped. - Patricia
I can't believe how many times I've seen that line of argument, that minorities have no right to call out racism now that we have a black president. - Victor Ganata
Rahsheen, I guess I was thinking more in terms of government acknowledgment of race when I typed that. I don't really want to get into an Affirmative Action discussion, but things like that and hate crime legislation don't seem potent anymore? Sorta feels like it's time for the government to set an example by treating everyone the same (stop asking me my race on forms) and passing the responsibility on to the people. As a society, maybe we're ready to take on the responsibility to call out racists? - Jered Hofker
I'll freely admit that where I live could be playing a huge part in my opinion on the matter. - Jered Hofker
AMEN Rah. - Shey
I think Jered means, at a certain point, we're going to collectively have to move past the issue of racism and just declare victory. We're not going to end racism until we stop sorting people by the artificial construct that we call "race". It's an antiquated model and that model is the source of racism. There will always be prejudice, but racism doesn't have to exist. The biggest... more... - Mark Davidson from BuddyFeed

Comment: Why people don't act on climate change - opinion - 23 July 2009 - New Scientist
"It is now 44 years since US president Lyndon Johnson's scientific advisory council warned that our greenhouse gas emissions could generate "marked changes in climate". That's 44 years of research costing, by one estimate, $3 billion per year, symposia, conferences, documentaries, articles and now 80 million references on the internet. Despite all this information, opinion polls over the years have shown that 40 per cent of people in the UK and over 50 per cent in the US resolutely refuse to accept that our emissions are changing the climate. Scarcely 10 per cent of Britons regard climate change as a major problem. I do not accept that this continuing rejection of the science is a reflection of media distortion or scientific illiteracy. Rather, I see it as proof of our society's failure to construct a shared belief in climate change." - Steven Perez from Bookmarklet
I would say 50% on a black-and-white question like "Are our emissions changing the climate?" probably shows more progress than that article wants to portray. - Jered Hofker
See, I don't think that's fair. People aren't stupid or even willfully ignorant. 44 years seems like a long time to us, sure, but how long did it take for the Flat Earthers to be converted? 300 years? Human-Affected Climate Change is an enormous concept and both sides seem to have valid arguments. I absolutely agree that we need to be conscious about what we put into the environment,... more... - Jered Hofker

I've opened up my "secret" Twitter account: @notsecretscoble Why? Because who it is following is interesting, not who is following it.
you don't need to open it up for us to see that... - Mike White
Why not do that with your normal Twitter? I don't understand the philosophy of courtesy re-follows at all. - Trent Hamm
Trent: you can't DM me if I don't follow you. - Robert Scoble
Zachary: no. I will only follow people I know and can tell a story about (that I've met face-to-face). - Robert Scoble
And even then I'm not going to follow everyone. I want to keep the numbers of people I'm following with that account way down. - Robert Scoble
@notsecretscoble's bio says "...but he's not going to be very picky...". I think thats a typo, should be "...but he's going to be very picky..." - DGentry
DGentry: yeah, what you said! :-) - Robert Scoble
I think that is interesting about any account and how I end up following a lot of the time. - David Gross
I thought you disliked DMs Robert. Have you changed your position on this? Curious. ps - remember that one time at Moscone when we all mounted cameras on our heads and walked around like crazy people? Those were the days :) - Brian Daniel Eisenberg

Adam: because not everyone I want to follow is on FriendFeed. - Robert Scoble

Glad @SecretScoble is following me, I made the "interesting" cut - Yay! - Susan Beebe
Jered - Scoble does NOT follow trolls, jerks or assholes, just to be clear ;P - Susan Beebe
@Susan did you meet him personally? That's what he keeps telling me as the reason that he doesn't follow me on his secret account - Jorge Escobar
Jorge: there are a few exceptions to that rule. - Robert Scoble
I get it. - Jorge Escobar
Scoble: So are you saying that tools like TweetDeck and Seesmic Desktop are not good enough filters? - Mike Bracco
Mike: right. Who you follow decides your inbound. If you follow 100,000 you still can't filter it down enough. There is value to following 100,000, though. Serendipity, for instance. - Robert Scoble
Scoble: Gotcha. I wrote a blog post a little while back calling for a group twitter framework to be developed (http://thenextweb.com/2009...) which could solve some of the filtering issues. - Mike Bracco
Mike: groups are going to be invaluable in the future for searching. - Robert Scoble
Groups is EVERYTHING for listening, engaging and building your network - Susan Beebe
There are lots of startups working on mass follow/unfollow frameworks and spam blocking. Filters, indeed. - Steve Lynch from twhirl
Yes - groups are really valuable to if easily created and then disposed of after they are needed. (IE a conference for example). Imagine if when you signed up for a conference your twitter handle was added to the conference group (which you could subscribe to and then unsubscribe after the conference was over). That would be cool. - Mike Bracco
Your own suggested users list. Cool. - Jason Nunnelley
Hey -- what Twitter grouping/filtering services do people find most interesting? - Steve Lynch from twhirl
Steve: none. I'm waiting for Twitter to do it. Jason: yeah, imagine that those 500 people were at a conference together. What a conference! - Robert Scoble

Christian: I don't think even this is the real Scoble graph. The real Scoble graph, the people whose judgements he trusts and is willing to depend upon, has to be even smaller than @notsecretscoble. The human brain just doesn't work that way, 500 people is an entire village not a circle of close friends. @notsecretscoble is a certainly a group of people to whom he feels a closer... more... - DGentry

Just ask me . . .) - Kathy Fitch
Thank you for this, more signal to the noise - Aaman (Clone of FF)
Wow, It would be nice to meet more people from here face to face, but so far I‘ve only met a dozen in person.. It would be nice to meet you in person some time as well. I followed your new account by mistake, so don't take it the wrong way if I unfollow you now. I didn't understand what you were doing with the account initially. It's a great idea for you though and I hope you enjoy it.. I'll have to check the comments and see if there's a feed I can follow here. - Michael Fidler
Michael: it's not important who follows you. It's important who you are following. You should only follow me if I'm providing value to you, no other reason. If you're following me because you think I'll be nice to you, or follow you back, or include you in some sort of list or group, you're following for the wrong reason. - Robert Scoble
On the other side, I will follow people for lots of different reasons and I have lots of different ways of following people. On some accounts I follow everyone. On others I have stupid, lame, reasons for following who I am following. The best account to follow me on, though, is my Likes Feed here on FriendFeed. http://friendfeed.com/scoblei... -- it shows ONLY OTHER PEOPLE that I like. - Robert Scoble
Robert, if I could "like" that last comment, I would. Wish folks would get that. - Karoli
Yeah, Karoli, too many people follow for stupid reasons and try to make it into a contest. It's interesting that following fewer people is actually far better than following more. But you have to pick the right people for that to be the case. - Robert Scoble
I agree with your last comment Robert but of course if there were folders in Twitter, I could follow people in a much more organized way like in FF. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Manielse: yeah, I agree. I just run two different Twitter accounts on two different computers. - Robert Scoble
I was just hoping to be able to do it from here. I follow a ton of people who don't follow back; because I find their feeds valuable. Honestly, I could care less who follows me back. I didn't see a feed here, so it will stay as is. - Michael Fidler
It's just a shame you need to do that. Live multiple lives in Twitter for a simple feature missing... - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Michael: if you hang out here for even 20 seconds you'll know I spend most of my time here, so following me here is far better than following my Twitter accounts. Anyway, I see you're following me, and I'm following you, so no worries! - Robert Scoble
Exactly! - Michael Fidler
I'm happy you've done this, I've long thought your main Twitter account must be impossible to read because of how many people you've followed on it. - Colin
I find it so interesting that this now means you have a 'stance' on DMs or other SM phenomena. I see this as a human trying to navigate the insanity that technology is affording us. How can you NOT experiment. Scoble does it in front of us, but I feel as if everyone should be trying to make this stuff more useful and rewarding. - Derek Shanahan
Good point Derek, for example I use PowerTwitter in Firefox "Top Friends" feature to do the same thing without needing multiple accounts. We all tackle the "make stuff more useful" in different ways... - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Great point. I've always found Scoble's dedication to FriendFeed a bit mysterious, although I also see him using it for more personal interaction than he could ever use the main twitter account for. A second twitter account, to me, isn't a statement of fact as to "How To Use Twitter"; it's a representation of the drive to figure out how these tools actually make all of our unique lives better. Plenty...PLENTY...of people only need one tool. Many of us are building our perfect buffets. - Derek Shanahan
I think it's only a matter of time before Twitter has to add server side support for 'groups' as a feature. - Alex Knight
@alex - I kind of thought the hacked twitter docs would reveal more in the way of group functionality, but it seems they have more pressing issues. - Derek Shanahan
I'm wary of notions like "the right people." That can become quite the echo chamber. It's very fun and edifying to discover a new voice with a unique angle. Of course, it's a matter of taste. One person's "right people" list is another person's poison. - Kathy Fitch
@kathy I agree...and I don't think Scoble finding a way to make a 'wanted list' makes it anyone's wanted list other than his own. - Derek Shanahan
Kathy: echo chambers can be quite good. Why? There's a reason you're listening to those people: they have something to say that's interesting to you. - Robert Scoble
Possibly, Derek. Of course, his sharing it makes it public, and gives it weight in the public domain. - Kathy Fitch
If you're only following people you've met face to face, Scoble, then I will have to arrange a beer the next time you are in the New York/New Jersey/Philadelphia area. Bring that brother of yours along, too. - Mike Nayyar
@kathy but that's only when you choose to decide that RS's list means more than your own! And I'll admit that I think at time RS thinks his list means more than anyone elses, but I also think he's mostly interested in making all this stuff useful. Making the best list isn't useful. Making a tool make more sense is useful. - Derek Shanahan
Robert, I don't agree, or at least not entirely. Anyone's "wanted" list is of course valuable to them personally, but when I say "echo chamber" I mean that the ultimate effect is often like the RT phenomenon writ even larger. It's the same weakness that the old "blog roll" notion brought into play. If I'm seeing the same darned roll everywhere, after awhile it gets to be a bit inbred, and that's not useful. Nothing fresh there. See what I mean? Echo, echo, echo. - Kathy Fitch
Derek: actually that's not true. I've discovered that some people are 100x times more able to get you tech news than others. Some are even 10,000x more able (like Mashable or GigaOm or TechCrunch). So, if you have a list of the right people who have proven expertise in a certain area that list itself will have huge value. At least to me. - Robert Scoble
I was just checking out your likes feed, and there’s a lot of great stuff there. It’s amazing how you’ve been able to find all that great content from this: http://friendfeed.com/scoblei.... Although I’m following many of the same people, I just noticed how much I’ve been missing here. Thanks for sharing it. I realize now that it’s time for me to start separating my feed into... more... - Michael Fidler
Derek--oh, please. As far as reach and weight go, his *does* mean more than mine, and way more. I don't feel at all bad about that, but it does seem inescapably so. Just a fact of life, and one he's worked hard on making a fact. That doesn't make my little collection of favorites less valuable to me, it just makes it something quite entirely different. - Kathy Fitch
michael, i bet robert uses lists more than anyone else - and for good reason too! i have a few lists, but spend most of my time in the home feed - Chris Heath
Kathy: after looking through 100,000 people I've learned there's a reason that certain people get paid attention to. Most are not providing value. - Robert Scoble
Michael, yeah, my likes feed at http://friendfeed.com/scoblei... is fun to compare to my inbound feed, which you posted. That's a good example of how few people provide what I'm looking for. I need to do the Kyte video over again because the UI has changed so much on FriendFeed. - Robert Scoble
Can't disagree with you there, Robert. There's a whole lotta fluff going on. Then again, there's a great deal of insight that goes untapped. I will always follow some of the a-list folks that I find truly valuable, but some part of me (big slice) will forever be in "go west" mode, too--looking for the new twist, the fresh insight, the uncharted territory, the bold disagreement with the in crowd. It's the academic in me, I suppose. - Kathy Fitch
Chris, I have varied interest, and I think I might benefit from creating a few of them. For example; I would like to have one for the people I like to check in on daily. It would be more organized then trying to remember them every day. Robert, it was a great video. I think It would help a lot of people out if you did it again. - Michael Fidler
@kathy I don't mean to underweight the value of the insight that someone like RS can afford us. @RS, you are right in pushing the idea that certain 'likes' matter than others...I've seen your position that further evolution of these mediums will place more value on the attention of the people who actually have authority or value in a space. I don't dispute that, and I guess I've... more... - Derek Shanahan
re: friendfeed lists - I have one for reading blogs, one for locals to me (carolinas counts), one for devs, one for my ego, one for the ff-team, one for ff centric groups (spam, feedback), one for funny pics and videos type groups, one for netcasts, one for 'back home' people, one for all the groups i've sub'd to, one for all the people subd to me, one for my twitter imports, and one... more... - Chris Heath
those are all lists btw, if that's not clear (i've edited to make sure it is) - Chris Heath
Chris you are incredibly organized! Wow! - Kathy Fitch
Thrill the world, make it a better place, for you and for me & the entire Twitterverse... - Majento
Kathy: that's why I still follow 100,000 too, just to make sure I'm seeing a broad range of people, not just the ones who did something cool yesterday. - Robert Scoble
Robert: Do you think the tool (Twitter) requires both tactics to be optimally useful? How does FriendFeed equate to your desire to follow the conversation in the way you want to follow it? - Derek Shanahan
Derek: yes. FriendFeed lets you choose a variety of models due to lists built in (and you can use lists to filter your searches!!!) - Robert Scoble
Yes, it's the constant push-me, pull-you thing. I want to reach, explore, fly high, discover new things, but not make things so dilute that they're worthless, or so vast that they're impossible to absorb in any meaningful way. - Kathy Fitch
And I think RS feels that FriendFeed gives you the ability to segregate your stream so that a vast reach is possible and dilution isn't necessary. I won't argue with that. - Derek Shanahan
Robert; I found, "20 things". It wasn't easy with the ambiguous title. If the update turns out as good as the original, (but hopefully it will be better), it should be posted on the sign up page for all new users to see. But, that's just my opinion:) - Michael Fidler
When did you meet Tom Hanks? What was he like? - Shari Weiss
Michael, I think I'm biased in favor of beginnings. In those moments, most of those we are keeping company with are still unknown quantities, drawn together only by a shared interest in beginnings. "Beta-fishers" is how I think of them, but not in the anxious, over-the-top, I-must-win-the-race twitterville way--just a genuine and shared love of exploration. I've met some of the people I love best that way, and have yet to meet most of them in person. Harder to do, now? Hmm. - Kathy Fitch
I met you face-to-face last Christmas, did you go back to that restaurant with the Travelling Geeks? - Joe Dawson
I thought there was an embargo on this ?? - Charlie Anzman
Scoble has a secret account, huh? You know you want to follow me. C'mon, you can't deny it, I'm geektastic too. You know you love crazy redheads who can't behave like civilized Tweeple. You're an outlier too. MMMMWAH! - Sheree Motiska

Jindal Cites Katrina, FEMA as Argument Against "Government-Run Health Care"
*psst* Hey, Bobby. That whole FEMA mess? Yeah, your party's fault. Just saying. - Steven Perez from Bookmarklet
*psst* Hey, Sean. "Brownie, you're doin a heckuva job." - Steven Perez
BTW thanks Steven for bringing so much news on this important topic to friendfeed. - Geoff Schultz {TF}
Why is everybody whispering? - Jason Wehmhoener
Mark: Yeah, I heard that before - the year prior in Florida. Election year, four hurricanes, president's brother - immediate aid. This time? Nope, it's the state's business. Not our call. Nope nope nope. That's why it's called FEMA: FEDERAL Emergency Management Agency. That's their job - to show up when trouble like Katrina hits. - Steven Perez
And the reason why residents along the Gulf Coast got irate? Because, compared to previous hurricanes, the people who were supposed to show up ... didn't. You can blame the governor, you can blame the mayor, but at the end of the day, when an entire American city ends up under water, you can't say that the president and his horse-show appointee WASN'T somehow to blame. - Steven Perez
You know, what passes for conservatism these days is merely corporate anarchy. May the best borg win, and everybody else can hang. The people that say that mismanagement of FEMA under Michael Brown is proof of the impossibility of government agencies ever doing anything useful are the same people who will call for demolishing the department of education and the park service in the next breath. Jerks. - Jason Wehmhoener
The same thing would not have happened on Clinton's watch. http://thehill.com/josh-ma... - Jason Wehmhoener
I'm pretty sure the national guard has been used for riot control before http://www.time.com/time... Best I recall the state has to request them but the fed has to dispatch them, no? - FFing Enigma
There are a great many things that are more appropriately handled at the federal level than at the state level. - Jason Wehmhoener
Mark: this wasn't a run-of-the-mill hurricane. This was one of the three worst case disaster scenarios happening. Whatever local or state preparation for such an emergency was inadequate merely based on the scope involved. And the one guy who could have stepped in - the same guy who broke his vacation in the middle of the night, in his pjs, no less, to sign legislation to keep one brain... more... - Steven Perez
we have learned a great many things, but a shortcut through the labyrinth is not among them. - Joe The Sausage
Oh, and the National Guard, the folks with the equipment and training for this kind of thing? They were in Iraq. Along with their equipment. - Steven Perez
As I said, Iraq: "BAGHDAD, Sept. 1 -- The 3,700 Louisiana National Guard members in Iraq will begin heading home within about a week as part of normal troop rotations, but there are no mass Guard movements back to the United States planned to aid hurricane relief, U.S. military officials in Baghdad said Thursday. "Everyone we have here, and every piece of equipment we have here, is... more... - Steven Perez
Mark: "With the consent of state governors, members or units of state National Guard may be appointed or deployed as federally recognized armed force members in active or inactive service.[5][6][7] If so recognized, they become part of the National Guard of the United States.[1] The National Guard of the United States units or members may be called up for federal active duty in times of... more... - Steven Perez

In other words, if the President deems a national emergency, he can activate the Guard. Which he didn't. - Steven Perez
Sean: people kept dying from exposure and dehydration for some time after the 1st. - Steven Perez
Mark, if memory serves it was upwards of 4 days for the first FEMA crews to arrive, longer for crews with actual assistive supplies. Dave got the call to go help and was there with a co-worker the next day. - FFing Enigma
*sigh* 1957, Mark: "Faubus' name became internationally known during the Little Rock Crisis of 1957, when he used the National Guard to stop black Americans from attending Little Rock Central High School as part of federally ordered racial desegregation. His strong stand on this issue may seem surprising considering Faubus' 1954 run for governor as a progressive candidate promising to... more... - Steven Perez
So, to answer your question: however long it might have been to make a call, Bush could have decided immediately to dispatch whatever forces were necessary to help out with rescue efforts in the name of national security. But he didn't. Until the screaming got too loud and the coverage on TV got too shrill. Only THEN did he move. For a president who prided himself on personal responsibility (you know, so unlike the last guy), Bush should could pass the buck when he needed to. - Steven Perez
I love how Mark can hang on to this one little tiny detail like a bulldog in spite of the piles of big massive issues sitting all around it. Here's some debunking: http://www.snopes.com/katrina... - Jason Wehmhoener
Ugh. The vitriol on both sides needs to stop. Seems to me politicians are politicians first, party members second and US citizens dead last. Two sides, same coin, etc etc etc. - Jered Hofker
In any other country, you'd probably be right, Jered. - Steven Perez
Thanks Trish, that's really the only point that matters. - Jason Wehmhoener
Mark: please see here for details http://www.sourcewatch.org/index... My favorite part "Brown also urged local fire and rescue departments outside Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi not to send trucks or emergency workers into disaster areas without an explicit request for help from state or local governments. Brown said it... more... - FFing Enigma
Perhaps the DMV would be a better example of what we could look forward to? - Alex Scrivener
Doubtful. That's a state agency. - Steven Perez
So you're saying that Eisenhower was wrong, Mark? - Steven Perez
whaaa??? - Jason Wehmhoener
And while we're on the subject, let's be perfectly blunt about one thing: hurricanes along the Gulf Coast have been hitting with regularity for longer than this country has been here. It's commonly seen for a long time as the one thing that the federal government does well - disaster relief. And they dropped the ball badly, and because of that, a lot of people died who may not have had... more... - Steven Perez
And from where do laws come, except from a sense of right or wrong, Sean? - Steven Perez
Cuz I'll tell you who didn't think Eisenhower was wrong, Mark: the Supreme Court of the United States. - Steven Perez
That's fine. Have fun. But Jindal is still an idiot. - Steven Perez
REALITY: Bumbling by top disaster-management officials fueled a perception of general inaction, one that was compounded by impassioned news anchors. In fact, the response to Hurricane Katrina was by far the largest--and fastest-rescue effort in U.S. history, with nearly 100,000 emergency personnel arriving on the scene within three days of the storm's landfall. http://www.popularmechanics.com/science... - Brian Newman from iPhone
And yet, it took FEMA five days to get water to the Superdome. - Steven Perez
Dozens of National Guard and Coast Guard helicopters flew rescue operations that first day--some just 2 hours after Katrina hit the coast. Hoistless Army helicopters improvised rescues, carefully hovering on rooftops to pick up survivors. On the ground, "guardsmen had to chop their way through, moving trees and recreating roadways," says Jack Harrison of the National Guard. By the end... more... - Brian Newman from iPhone
While the press focused on FEMA's shortcomings, this broad array of local, state and national responders pulled off an extraordinary success--especially given the huge area devastated by the storm. Computer simulations of a Katrina-strength hurricane had estimated a worst-case-scenario death toll of more than 60,000 people in Louisiana. The actual number was 1077 in that state. - Brian Newman from iPhone
14 April 2006: "WASHINGTON (CNN) -- After being roundly criticized in a slew of media, congressional and government reports, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's internal watchdog Friday returned its own verdict on the handling of Hurricane Katrina: The criticism against FEMA is largely deserved. In a hefty 218-page report, the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general... more... - Steven Perez
7 September 2005: "Katrina would have been devastating regardless, but those actions turned FEMA into something akin to New Orleans' famous levees — a structure sure to fail when a big disaster struck. Since Katrina, blame for FEMA's blundering has zeroed in on the agency's director, Michael Brown. His failure should not have been a surprise. He had almost no experience in disaster work... more... - Steven Perez
""Pursuant to a September 7 request by Representative John Conyers, Jr. to review the law and legal accountability relating to Federal action in response to Hurricane Katrina, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) issued a report [September 13, 2005] about whether the Governor of Louisiana took the necessary and timely steps needed to secure disaster relief from the federal... more... - Steven Perez
"WASHINGTON - In the months before Hurricane Katrina, President George W. Bush sought to cut a key program to help local governments raise their preparedness, and state officials warned of a "total lack of focus" on natural disasters by his homeland-security chief, documents show. The disclosures add to questions over the administration's emergency-response planning, Homeland Security... more... - Steven Perez
To get back to the main point, though, when people who fundamentally don't believe government can do any good run the government, surprise, the government can't, but this is more of a self-fulfilling prophecy than evidence that they were right. - Andrew C (✓)
Bobby, why wasn't New Orleans and your state better prepared for a major hurricane? You're responsible for your state's infrastructure. How about the prisoners who were evacuated without their records and thrown into "safer" prisons, without regards for their offenses or personal security? - Bill Sodeman

When you increase Difficulty in video games, do you prefer more bulk baddies or making the existing ones harder to kill (give them more HP)?
There are other ways too, like manipulating the environment. Higher difficulties could have a reduction in objects used for cover (I can't think of any examples, but it seems like a valid way). - Ryan Versaw
Harder to kill can also be branched out into many possibilities - More HP (as you mentioned) and special immunities (higher Diablo II difficulties) are only two options I can think of. - Ryan Versaw
In terms of making the AI better - this has been done in some games to a bit of success. I think I may have noticed it in Mass Effect some (but it's been awhile), but the main thing I can think of now is giving the enemies a greater chance to dodge (Gears of War and Halo both do this, among others). - Ryan Versaw
It also seems like many games just give the enemies a large boost in accuracy as well - Instant sniping from a mile away when they shouldn't even see you. - Ryan Versaw
Yeah, that's all true. The other thing is, when you're making them harder to kill, the end result is almost always making you weaker by proxy. I think I prefer more baddies to the same ones with abilitizers. - Jered Hofker
If you make the baddies more powerful by giving them more powerful weapons (that you can pick up after!) you get a reward for the challenge of being over powered for a little bit. - Stolee
