Testing out new iPhone app for FriendFeed: AlertThingy.
Trying to figure out how to refresh home feed. - Kevin Whalen from Alert Thingy
How is it? - Robert Scoble
Great! - Jeremy Baines
Hey Robert - it's pretty slick. But could use improvement: 1) no way to refresh home feed for updates/ new posts, 2) only shows a certain # of posts in home feed, 3) like buddy feed, you click a post to see comments/likes. But you also have to do the same on long posts to read the entire post. - Kevin Whalen from email
Cool! I didn't now they had an iPhone app. - Svartling
It gas very good potential but not quite finished yet. - Amy D from Nambu
Also there is no link to an article on Google Reader posts. I agree with Amy, has potential but needs improvement. - Kevin Whalen
I knew it was just a matter of time, for some client to access Friendfeed. Though I am sick of ShoZu, Xumi, Pinger and the like for their poor UI and inability to hold conversations. Let us know how alert thingy works. You've inspired me to go try one more client (Mother Feed) - derikp
Just saw the app yesterday on app store and I am waiting for the reviews. - ashish
Really??? It's only 99c, what have you got to loose :) - Jeremy Baines
This comment is done in AlertThingy FF edition. Hopefully we will get better refresh and ways to like and comment on feeds. - LPH™ and his dog P™ from Alert Thingy
Holding out a bit longer to see which ones will support 3.0's push bit. - Daniel Krech
I will try and find time to fix that! :) - Jeremy Baines
There is also another FriendFeed app due out soon that I was planning on trying: http://friendfeed.com/davidjh... . - Kevin Whalen from email
Amigo is now in app store. - Kevin Whalen
By the way, mother feed is not very good, quite buggy and often crashes. How did you like alert feee thingeee?/?? - derikp
Tracy McLaughlin
Is anyone using the AlertThingy Friendfeed iPhone app? I love to know what people think of it.
It's Great ;) - Jeremy Baines

Loving the (apparently new) FriendFeed app for the iPhone: AlertThingy.
Glad you like it :) any chance I can trouble you for a review (pretty please) - http://itunes.apple.com/WebObje... - Jeremy Baines
Roberto Bonini
Anyone having success with the Friendfeed AlertThingy app???
what's your problem? - Jeremy Baines
I've only managed to use it once. Its setup for my FF account, but now its not starting. - Roberto Bonini
have your tried restarting the phone? - Jeremy Baines
Tried that already. - Roberto Bonini
Some people are telling me that deleting and reinstalling has worked for them. You might also want to check the setting in settings>alertthingy - Jeremy Baines
Ok. Will try that. Thanks Jeremy. - Roberto Bonini
Appears to work now after a re-install. - Roberto Bonini
Not really. It eats up a lot of system resources on the Old Beast. - Steven Perez
Great :) - Any chance I could bug you for a review or rating (pretty please) - http://itunes.apple.com/WebObje... - Jeremy Baines
I gave it 5 stars. Will give a review later :) - Roberto Bonini
Thanks :) - Jeremy Baines
Steve Rubel
AlertThingy for Friendfeed hits the iPhone
I feel it's a good effort, but judging by the standards set by Tweetie and Twitterrific, we could either have a long way to go with this or could see more developers jumping in this untapped area. - Rohit
Thanks for the tip. How do you think it compares to BuddyFeed? - Sterling Zumbrunn
Haven't tried Buddyfeed yet. - Steve Rubel from email
I've used both, and I think Buddyfeed edges it at the moment for features - but AlterThingy is quicker. - Ian Betteridge
Well I love it!! but I am a little biased :) - Jeremy Baines
What's wrong with FF on Safari via the iPhone? - Jason Hansen
can you see your friend lists? - metalerik
Yup! - Jeremy Baines
sweet. one more thing... are the images inline? - metalerik
Nope, but you see an icon telling you which items have images - Jeremy Baines
ok still looks really nice though. I'm going to check it out. Do you have plans to put the images inline? It's one of the major reasons I like FF. - metalerik
Will take a look and what is involved in adding that option when I sit down to dev again :) - Jeremy Baines
no sitting! wait, I mean no standing! Just bought it. It's pretty sweet! It's clean and has a nice small but readable font so more fits on the page. Plus, the images are only one fast tap away. May be the better way to do it (for speed) and later maybe have as a pref? No crashes so far either ;) - metalerik
Looks great but how can you refresh your feed inline? - Rob Enslin from Alert Thingy
Prob should add that in the next release :) - Jeremy Baines
I prefer the FriendFeed iPhone web page to either BuddyFeed or AlertThingy, it shows the post comments inline. Comments are one of the big features of FF, so having to tap tap tap between posts just to read comments is too much tapping. - John Francis
AlertThingy just stopped working for me. It shows it's splash screen then terminates. I have rebooted my iPhone and the problem persists. - John Francis
Some people experiencing this problem are telling me that if you uninstall and reinstall it works. i am looking into this issue, it is only happening for a few people - Jeremy Baines
@Jeremy - that seems to have worked. Thanks. - John Francis

@alertthingy what is 'Wite Comment' shouldn't you at least spell check your app before charging money? http://yfrog.com/67zloj
@alertthingy what is 'Wite Comment' shouldn't you at least spell check your app before charging money? http://yfrog.com/67zloj
Sorry dyslexic developer here and unfortunately not many dev tools have spellchecks :( Will fix ASAP - Jeremy Baines

any good? honestly now... - Zee.
what's the best iPhone FF app? - Mike Bracco
Will FF ever develop an official app or are they going to leave it up to 3rd parties like this? - Mike Bracco
Mike, I've tried AltertThingy, MotherFeed, BuddyFeed, and Nambu. Each has their strengths and weaknesses -- maybe I should write a mini-review :). - Paul Buchheit
That would be nice :) What turns me off about some of these apps is that it does multiple social networks which usually means compromises in being able to best interface with any one of the social networks. On the desktop front, apps like Seesmic are figuring it out in terms of multiple accounts but I feel the iPhone is behind in terms of a one app for all. So until that happens I'll have the Facebook app for FB and Tweetie for Twitter. - Mike Bracco
FF's iPhone site is pretty good without any third party apps, although I've only tried out MotherFeed. - 321
Paul - Yea, consider doing app reviews.. I'd love to read your take on these FF client apps - Susan Beebe
Sanat, I disagree about the web interface for FF being good. I find it challenging at best. I'd love to see this program developed (refresh and ability to like entries faster) and it'd be good. - LPH™ and his dog P™
I've really only used the iPhone web interface and BuddyFeed, but the one thing I liked about BuddyFeed is the ability to use your photo library when creating posts. That'd be impossible (I think) with a web interface. All the available options are missing the new FriendFeed features like DMing and notifications, but that's a limitation of the available API. - Mark Trapp
Offline viewing and push notifications would be other features, but I don't think any of the native applications offer those just yet. - Mark Trapp
Unfortunately AlertThingy crashes on every start. Even rebooting doesn't help. Interestingly, the first time I launched, it did work. - Lars Trieloff from BuddyFeed
Some people experiencing this problem are telling me that if you uninstall and reinstall it works. i am looking into this issue, it is only happening for a few people. - Jeremy Baines
Justin Parks
Anyone heard of AlertThingy? New to me! Just blogged about it, seems pretty cool for #socialmedia stuff: http://www.justinparks.com/alertth...

New comment on "Testing out new iPhone app for FriendFeed: AlertThingy." http://www.backtype.com/lph...
What do you think? - Jeremy Baines
The program was okay for short bursts of activity but not long time periods. I'll stick with BuddyFeed for now. The program is getting started and I can see some enhancements would make life on FF easier. For example, I didn't figure out how to get to "my discussions" easily. Also, the problem with refresh was annoying. I'll keep watching the program and see how it develops. In time,... more... - LPH™ and his dog P™

Sorry about that! dyslexic programmer here! let me know where they are! - Jeremy Baines
Hey hey! Throughout the app the word "write" is currently "wite" as in the colour. Good app like! - Nicky Colman from Alert Thingy

New iPhone FriendFeed app: AlertThingy - FriendFeed Edition - http://appshopper.com/social-...
"Following the success of our AlertThingy desktop client we have now gone mobile. We've gone back to our roots with AlertThingy for FriendFeed - iPhone Edition. This app provides the complete FriendFeed experience based on the new FriendFeed. Get your latest data stream; post comments, updates, links and photos; access groups and subscriptions; like and unlike items; hide and show items; subscribe to friends and search." - Kevin Whalen from Bookmarklet
Downloading now. - Kevin Whalen
This isn't working at all for me - Rob Haas
Ok, uninstall-reinstall worked. Nice. About a couple minutes in and I think this may be my favorite FF iPhone app. If it replaces the iPhone page remains to be seen for me though. - Rob Haas
Not sure if I am missing it, but I can't figure out how to refresh the home feed. - Kevin Whalen
Ok, it doesn't handle more than one image per post (if there is more than one image, none are shown) and Youtube clips arent accessible at all. Back to the web app. - Rob Haas
Most of the friendfeed apps suck. I recently got a promo code from the developer of buddyfeed. It has been the best so far. Otherwise, I just use the web interface. - TheHenry
Writing from AlertThingy. Just clicked the "Wite comment" button. How was that missed? - thinkQuick from Alert Thingy

It looks really nice, Jeremy. I gave you 4 stars. One other note - when you are reading a specific post, I should be able to jump directly to that user's profile page - so I can follow them, etc - but I couldn't get that to work. I hope web links will work in the next version, too. - thinkQuick

If the FF guys wouldn't mind me just using there icon then I'd definitely use it but I don't want to step on any toes. Ideally someone talented would make me one that both emphasizes FF (through the 2 F's) and the mobile aspect (motion blur maybe?) - Benjamin Golub from fftogo

Adobe AIR Desktop App For FriendFeed Coming - http://www.techcrunch.com/2008...
Adobe AIR Desktop App For FriendFeed Coming
"We just heard that Howard/Baines will be releasing an Adobe AIR application for FriendFeed in the next week or so. So far all we have is the screen shot and a confirmation from Baines that his team is working on it. The application will be called Alert Thingy." I like the name :) - Bret Taylor
Now if someone could just combine a FF / Twitter Adobe AIR app -- making sure that tweets weren't duplicated -- that'd be super! Otherwise, it's annoying to feel compelled to run both (and no, I cannot convince all my friends on Twitter to sign up for FF, nor do I feel like creating Imaginary Friends for all of them). - Adam Lasnik
Thing is, I love the simple web-based FF interface. Too slick to make the switch. FF + Fluid + Fluid plug-ins = winner - Aviv
I don't feel the need to abandon the FF interface. In fact, I see myself doing other activities from within FF - http://ffapps.com/tabs/ - Aviv
Can't wait for this! It's going to be awesome. - Brandon Titus
Its about frackin' time. What took so long? :) - Tony Hung

I don't like the msgs popping up... - terababy
I sure hope it runs better then TWIRL - Noah David Simon
@Noah: Better than twhirl? I've never had issues with it. - Voyagerfan5761
Twirl has not has issues, it just happens to rely on the twitter api being up, which is the unreliable part. As long as the FF API can keep up with demand an Adobe Air app that works as good as twirl would be sweet. - Christian Burns
I'll wait for a non AIR app thank you :) - Steven Hodson
An iGoogle gadget would do me fine :)) - ceebee
THX 4 invitatiojn- guess my computerallergy holds me away from all this kind of internet friendship thing. Somehow too much letters...u know what I mean? Maybe it takes some time to come into that stuff. Virtual??? Prefer real air, trees and touch...talk soon NOAH. - Natascha Engelmann

I'll be happy once Adobe AIR comes out for Linux. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)
@possible248 labs.adobe.com/downloads/air_linux.html btw ive been running adobe air through wine for over a month here is how you install it with wine www.ubuntu-unleashed.com/2008/03/howto-adobe-air-and-xdrive-desktop-lite.html - Kyle Weller
@defcon: I'll bet he'll like that link. I pointed it out over Twitter, but you never know; twhirl supposedly has some issues on Linux platforms that aren't fixed yet. Wine might take care of the problems. And BTW, links are automatically, er, linked if you start them off with http:// - Voyagerfan5761
I much prefer my online services to stay in browser windows - it's too confusing for my poor british brain otherwise! - Slappy Line

@Frederic: I considered asking, but figured the answer was obvious. @Jeremy: So, do you? :D - Voyagerfan5761
Those lucky enough to be at the adobe AIR Tour - London yesterday would have seen a demo of the app plus a demo of a couple of bugs we need to fix :). The launch is currently being held up by thawte who we are waiting on to issue our digital certificate! Once that is done we are good to go. Thanks for all the offers, we have enough beta testers on windows and mac for now, but would be interested in anyone running AIR on linux! (via Alert Thingy) - Jeremy Baines
...and if you want to follow me and the kinds of apps we build then please subscribe to me or follow me on twitter (jeremybaines) (via Alert Thingy) - Jeremy Baines
@Jeremy: Will all comments posted via Alert Thingy have that tagline? Oh, and I believe @possible248 on Twitter (and here) is running AIR on Linux. - Voyagerfan5761
@Voyagerfan5761 yes they will. We think it's ok to ask for a bit of PR if we are giving you an app free. What do you think? It would be nice if there was a proper place to put the "via...." link, like on twitter, but the guys at FriendFeed have not provided anything like that for us yet! Bret.. are you listening??? (via Alert Thingy) - Jeremy Baines
I would prefer to have the "via Alert Thingy"-tagline independent from the comment itself. I second that request. - sebmos
Ok that is 2 of us - Is that enough to change the API Bret? How many votes do I need? :) - Jeremy Baines
Of course, some of us might feel that reading a few words of advertising along with each comment is, you know, not exciting. - j1m
Adding the source to entries and comments from the API makes a lot of sense. I will think about it and take a look at what Twitter does, and come back with something. - Bret Taylor
@Jeremy - would be happy to try it out on Linux :) - Frederic
I'm so ready for this app, it hurts - Bwana ☠

I seriously seriously want this! but agree w/Adam - combo app would ROCK - Sarah Perez

@Jeremy Baines thanx. restarting stopped the sounds (perhaps just a note, that saving settings is not enough). Liking it more and more. Just installed it. I don't like it (alert thingy)... much prefer the FF interface. But kudos to you on the "remote key" -- solid idea. - Michael Leggett
I don't think it hides the entries set to be hidden on FF. Anyone else can confirm this? - Turker Keskinpala
@Turker: I wrote about that this morning, so yeah, I can confirm. It's still showing my hidden stuff as I type this. I think the fault lies with the FriendFeed API, though. So far as I know, there's no indication of hiding status available. - Voyagerfan5761
Turkey and Voyagerfan5761: I will work on this today. We are not passing the "hidden" bit through to the API properly. - Bret Taylor
@Bret - can you look at the hide issue.. we are getting the hidden stuff showing in the API - Jeremy Baines
Thanks Bret. FF web interface is so fast and usable that it is not easy to switch to a desktop application. Nevertheless, good work Jeremy Baines. - Turker Keskinpala
It really is a nice piece of work, but I find the whole dark/translucent thing too hard to read. I also miss the collapsing of long comment threads (like this one). In fact, I didn't realize how nice a feature that was until I didn't have it and had to scroll and scroll to get to a new comment. - Chris Johnson
Can someone explain to me, in 42 words or less, why an app like this is better than just accessing FF over the web? Color me seriously confused. I'd try it myself, but I get an error anytime I try to download it (and yes, I have Air installed). - Adam Lasnik
@Adam Lasnik - Firefox can't handle a lot of tabs (non beta) and I'd rather use Alert Thingy or bTittleTattle then leave FriendFeed open in Firefox. (via Alert Thingy) - Corvida
@corvida ahh but, FF3 beta is solid and handles a wealth of tabs with great aplomb. :) I've got my eye on AT, but for now it taketh more functionality than it giveth. I suspect with all this attention, though, it will soon giveth a lot more! - felix
Corvida, or you could do what I do when I want to keep one or two tabs open persistently and easy-to-switch-to (e.g., Pandora): open them in Internet Exploder. What I was hoping to hear was that this Air app offered intriguing / helpful "extras" that one doesn't innately get in the web version. For instance, I use Twhirl because it aurally alerts me to direct messages AND displays all messages to me in chron order on one scrolling page -- something not offered on the Twitter web page. - Adam Lasnik
@Felix I FF Betas crash on me way more than FF2 and that's more important to me. @Lasnik I don't have IE installed =P Don't want to keep 2 browsers open anways, it's defeating the point in a way. I'm still wasting resources, though I think Alert Thingy is less of a waste. - Corvida
Okay, just tried it on another computer. Not for me. I find it much harder to read/scan stuff on it vs. the web page. - Adam Lasnik
