“Alright, we're back from the gem hunt extravaganza. Here are some of the better pieces I got out of a 'salted' bucket today. The second shot shows a soda bottle for a general size comparison.”

Todd, the mountains of North Carolina have significant pockets of garnet, ruby, sapphire and more. You put the dirt into a sifter and use a water flume to rinse off the soil. The mine we go frequent uses a bulldozer to make a big pile of native soil and you can pay $30 to dig and rinse as much as you like (which we did yesterday). Today we wanted something that involved less manual labor, so we bought 'salted' buckets which means the mine owners put some nicer stones and some non-native stones (like the tiger eye and aquamarine). - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
thats awesome Tina! great finds indeed! i find it amazing that all of thse gems can be found in one area. usually there are only high concentrations of one type where others may exist, but are not as favorable. this is usually the case when talking about semi-precious gems like citrine and amethyst. i should post pics of my stash rough emeralds so you can see them. - Carlos Ayala
Carlos: it's a result of some lucky geography and chemistry, truth be told. These mountains are ancient, so stones that are chemically the same but exhibit different characteristics based on how they were formed (i.e. rubies and sapphires) are pretty common. Many of the rubies, and some of the sapphires, that are native here are star rubies. They do best when cut into a cabachon, such as these http://www.awesomegems.com/rub... - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Oh, and I'd love to see your stash! This is just a selection of what I found over two days. Perhaps if I get bored tomorrow I'll sort it all out and get some 'group' shots (as I now have a crapload of rubies and sapphires of varying sizes). - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
