Can i point out that twit started by talking about Edward Bernays who said "If you can influence the leaders, either with or without their conscious cooperation, you automatically influence the group which they sway". Isn't a windows 7 party unconscious cooperation? disclosure is irrelevant.
- russtbarnacle
The Windows 7 parties is pure genious on behalf of Microsoft. It cost them next to nothing and they get all the techheads talking about it 24/7 + the videos went viral.

But don't you think the 'lameness' is on purpose... We are still talking about it. The Windows 7 Party is the PC in Mac vs PC ads

Who the heck says "negatory". Did you join the army? Does Scotland even have an army? Does Mel Gibson lead them? Or are they drunk all the time? (See V, I don't pick on you *every* time)

Dave: I watch too much NCIS. Also, we have an army, a navy, the girl guides...they could all take you, cat-man (and all ARE quite partial to the drink) :P

Yeah Dave, everybody says it. Don't be so negatory.

Boy oh boy. I really want to get excited about Gary again, but I reached a point where his videos, tweets, and blog posts became just too much. One can only take so much of a person constantly talking about themselves before you just can't handle it anymore. You listening, Calacanis?

"Just got back from a press conference tonight with Beyonce and she spoke of a few upcoming movie projects. The last one on her list was Wonder Woman! Yes, Wonder Woman! She said she has to meet up with the writers and directors in a couple months and things will start to pick up by mid-2010 for a late 2011 release. She said the writers were Stuart Beatti and David Elliot, the guys that wrote GI Joe: Rise of Cobra and the director was John Moore, the guy that directed Max Payne."
- RAPatton
from Bookmarklet
Everyone is going to focus on whether she can pull it off. She might be able to even though she wouldn't be my choice. It is " the guys that wrote GI Joe: Rise of Cobra" and "the guy that directed Max Payne" that scares the hell out of me.

Okay, she said she's *in* WW, but apparently didn't say she's *playing* WW. What if she's the villain? Beyonce as Cheetah, maybe?
- Kevin Shaum
Ok, yeah I heard about Whedon doing it for like two years, but overall my interest in a WW movie is incredibly low. I can't think of a single decent super heroine movie. Maybe Spiderman 3.

I agree with you on this. Been playing with it in the dev preview and now in the released version and until I get people I know on there and reasons to discuss or collaborate then I don't see the value. The concept is excellent, the execution is excellent, I just don't think the product is what people are expecting.
- Keith Bennett
When I first saw the release video of Wave it was clear this wasn't something that would be for you to invite all your friends to. I'm surprised at your harsh review in such a fast manner -- you opened it up to the world of your "friends" to play in the sandbox -- but did you actually have a mission? You actually point out that this has great potential for group work. It's about...

- Elaine Young, Ph.D
Writing off Wave at this point is a bit like walking into a hardware store, picking up a hammer, walking around the store looking for stuff to hit and declaring "Why would I ever want a hammer? This is a waste of time." For teams and workgroups looking to improve the way they communicate and collaborate, Wave might be a great tool. For others, not so much.
- Ken Sheppardson
Elaine: you are hoping for something more in depth? Come back in a month after things settle out and developers ship some real tools for it. Welcome to our real time world. Why do you assume that normal people will give ANY tool more than an hour before they decide whether it sucks or not?
- Robert Scoble
The amount of hype this thing got will NOT be realized by a collaboration scenario. I had this years ago with Ray Ozzie's tools. Geesh.
- Robert Scoble
Oh, I'm not arguing that it's over-hyped. That's the nature of the real time social media hype echo chamber we live in these days. :-) That's not to say it isn't a cool tool. BTW, I really miss Groove. :-(
- Ken Sheppardson
I won't believe for a second that Google created Wave to be anything less than an entrance into competition with Facebook for mass users. Google does one thing very well for mass usage, Search. The other things are great tools and have a base, but this was a Social Networking play, disguised as a collaboration tool. I think Robert is right, this is NEVER going to match the hype.
- Patrick Boegel
I think you're absolutely right, Robert. I got my invite, all excited, signed up, added a friend, and.... *fizzle*... it's chat, it's IM, it's a bad twitter client... I hope it will evolve into something worthwhile.
- Jan Ole Peek
I always understood wave as the next evolution of xmpp - something google envisaged when they first got their hands on jabber. Something distributed merging the features of instant messaging, forum and newsgroup. It was not aimed at twitter or facebook, it was more aimed at some of the live features of Notes and Groupwise and forums. PS: the hype it got is the same as every time google...

I've been a wavesandbox user for months and today I got both my wave invite and as it just so happens I also got my threadsy invite. Suffice to say I'm much more excited about threadsy! Why? because it's actually helpful.
- Bob Stewart
It's clearly not a 1:1 replacement for email and its early yet. This platform is made for customization. As soon as the development community catches up with concern/demand then I think Wave will be far more refined and valuable as a productivity tool. I think it's way too early to say its overhyped but it certainly makes for a great blog title :) Have a great time out in HMB with Chase today.
- Jim Goldstein
How about that, you're absolutely right Robert.
- Peter Kruit
I think I mentioned a month ago that people were going to be overwhelmed by this and it may be too soon to launch to the public.

This is one of those times where I'm happy to let the gang of 2000 beat it up before getting in.

Imagine a Twitter network with five people on it, none of whom actually work on any of the same projects you need to finish this week.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Am I the only one who has been puzzled when people started saying "this is gonna be the new facebook/twitter"? I watched the whole 1.5 hour demo video and that thought never crossed my mind, nor did using it with dozens upon dozens of people at a time. The only things I saw them demo was a variety of tasks between a handful of friends or colleagues. Robert's right, when you've got a ton...

Google Wave passes the twitter test. Lots of folks didn't get twitter (and still don't) when it first appeared. GW will follow a similar trajectory..geek early adoption and later mass adoption. I like it that people don't quite get GW which means that people will use it in multiple ways, as they do twitter. I project that it will live up to the hype much like the iPhone.
- Jim Posner
Or it'll follow the FriendFeed curve: a few geeks will get it, use it, become dedicated to it, it'll never see mass adoption, then the engineers will get recruited to work on other projects and the technology will just get folded into other systems...
- Ken Sheppardson
My understanding is the intent was to re-invent email. So I see the gmail population eventually ending up on GW. Google as a rule has had few bombs. Certainly the GW platform will evolve (filters) to address some of the concerns Robert has.
- Jim Posner
interesting review, i will have to check it out for myself! twitter(at)locspoc
- Loc
Can't wait to see how the users evolve ways of using it that help to moderate the wave. Appreciate the fact that Robert and others (some of you) are sharing this experience and these diverse reactions.
- Holly Rae, FFer
Agreed, Scoble. I don't see this as a good friendfeed replacement anymore.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
There is Etherpad and Zenbe ShareFlow. I would wait and see how GoogleWave evolves.
- Wins Fern
Nice to see you present some critical thoughts on this, and I must say that your comments seem very sensible! I would also like to point to services like Etherpad when it comes to real-time collaboration on documents, and I also think there seems to be (potentially) a lot of noise in Google Wave. It will be interesting to see though :-)
- Reidar
r u sure , they are done in pencil ?? The jpeg has some strange watermarks within.. need to scan the raw exifr data within the jpeg. I am doubting that this is pencil only !~

searcing for a specialist to decide that those are fake or real drawings :)
- Burçak Çubukçu
Peter can I send you some of the originals? We might as well find out the truth. I'm curious about a couple of them.
- Michael Fidler
I'am a sceptic. If those are real drawings. Somebody has to prove it. Is there a video link that some one actualy draw one of these for instance?
- Burçak Çubukçu
Just to show you Burçak, that I'm curious about the truth also, I've done a little investigating myself. I found the original picture from which the Jesica Alba drawing is copied. http://bit.ly/gAXX
- Michael Fidler
how'd you get Johnny Depp to sit still for so long?
- Nathan Rein
Michael, I do belive in "PHOTOSHOP". Anyway thank you for your efforts.
- Burçak Çubukçu
Burçak Çubukçu I think I'm leaning a little in your direction now. After overlaying the two images, they're practically identical. There is a tiny difference on the ruffle of her dress, but otherwise they are the same. To be honest, they "could" be photoshopped!
- Michael Fidler
ok Jessica Alba's could be a drawing...
- Burçak Çubukçu
drawing photo-realistically isn't hard when you're copying a photograph. they're probably real but not really art. Just great artistic skillz.
- JoEllen
Naturally the celebrities had to come from some type of original work, and a photo is the most likely candidate. I am starting to notice some small texture differences, especially in the one with Johnny Depp. BTW, I found the original for that too. It's on the cover of the DVD for the movie.
- Michael Fidler
@The Other Brian (Norwood), You cold be right, and perhaps that explains why some of the detailed work was left out on the Johnny Depp piece. Here's a link to a few more, which are more obvious, but still came from the same set http://bit.ly/tklrX
- Michael Fidler
I own a book called "How to Draw Lifelike Portraits from Photographs" by Lee Hammond. It shows all the techniques and phases of creating something like this in pencil and graphite. So... Yes, it is possible. If you ask me, though, this is an artform best left to the ADD set.
- Angela
Kol, I can't thank you enough! Kol found a different posting, which proves these are all pencil drawings. I had my doubts about a few of them, because they were collected from several locations. The site Kol found has done a wonderful job pulling together an even more impressive collection .Take a look. http://www.flickzzz.com/2009...
- Michael Fidler
No worries, Michael. :-) Shame we couldn't find all the artists.
- Kol Tregaskes
Thank's James!!! Actually I've been waiting for two month's for someone to bring these back up. Since I posted them in March, I've not only discovered who all three of the artists are, but found some new one's as well. I'm going to look for info on the artists, and post it. Could you please pop-up the other one as well? I would prefer to post it there. It's the one with a bear, lion, and I believe a tiger on it. Thanks again!
- Michael Fidler
James, I just saw the post you left on the other set. Sorry I missed it. For the record, I always knew that these were copies of photographs. I ran them through TinEye before posting anything in the hopes of discovering the artists. In the comments, several people correctly pointed this out as well. However, it still doesn’t diminish the quality of the work.
- Michael Fidler

Just saw the first iPhone app demoed that I want: Tick Talk Robot. It is an alarm clock that reads you news from RSS feeds. Developer says it will be on iPhone store in a couple of weeks #iphonedevcamp
an RSS reader that verbally reads RSS works for me any time -- especially when I'm driving
- Ernest Lehmann
I wonder how it would work on an iPhone given that applications cannot run in the background. Hm. But there is a way to push audio through Apple's push service - maybe that would do it.
- Nitesh Dhanjani
The app is now available on the app store. Its under the name Tick Talk. It has a nice polished interface including an animated robot that speaks the news, and an easy to set alarm mode so you can wake up to the news being read.

Tonight I was faced with this scene at a party in Indianapolis for Monster Energy drink and I figure it is a good way to tell if you are a geek. If you first impulse is to ask the girls for help with your Ubuntu install, you are probably a geek. If you start wondering about what cool iPhone apps they use, you are probably a geek. If you want to ask them where the best places to find wifi in Paris are, you are probably a geek. If you want to invite them to a Facebook party you are probably a geek. If you ask them what they think of Android you are probably a geek.
- Robert Scoble

If you know for a fact the girls don't care at all about you and are only there as paid advertisements, AND you still don't care and want to gawk and hang out and get photos with them anyway...you might be a geek.

ok BARONESS.....Tl me whts wrng wit my english huh? nd by the wy im afemale,so dnt use him/her...nd let me nt forgt tht hole thng whn i sed shey nd i sleeping together tht ws just a joke, and i ws jst plyin....
- TenyJ Williams
...thanks Shey. i've been in need of some energy lately. Anika, you got anymore of that popcorn? .LOLz
- .LAG liked that
Wow, in the 90's, I used to let the guys on IRC assume I was male in order to avoid comments like TenyJ's first one. I did assume she was joking, but what a 180.
- MiniMage, sheeple of FF
@TenyJ... but we needs our energy, and popcorn is non-fattening... crunch, crunch! .LOLz
- .LAG liked that
Yeah, Baroness, whts wrng wit her english huh? *dead* I'm popping MORE popcorn y'all.
- Anika
OK i cn c tht yall ar truly hating on me...bt its al gud..enjoy ur snaks hey.
- TenyJ Williams
I can't tell you how I got this photo and I can't tell you why I am dumping my Mac when this comes out but this is the first Dell that has me slobbering in a very long time.
- Robert Scoble
Didn't you say something similar about the Nokia N97 a few months ago?
- Beau Giles
You've got to tell me more than that for me to believe why you might throw your Mac away??
- Aaron Myers
Really - with the build quality they are renown for!!
- Ian Lewis
If it runs windows 7 then at least there is some reason for this madness. Anything else and you've completely lost your mind!
- Devlin Dunsmore
Amit: I can't explain why, sorry, but this will get a lot of attention and Apple will have to react to it. Why do you think Apple has been attacking Windows 7?
- Robert Scoble
Looks like a "laptop" and it's "black".
- thund3rbox
Yes, it looks sleek, but it's still a Dell.
- Bob Young
From the keyboard, it looks like a 15.4" or 17" widescreen that's super thin. (keyboard is chiklet-style)
- Eugene Hsu
You can't throw out your mac! You'll eventually be crawling back.
- Matt Ruiz
Yes, I got excited by the Palm Pre but I don't think I said the Pre would get me to throw away my iPhone. Of course we don't know what Apple will do but this will make Apple guys at least raise their eyebrows.
- Robert Scoble
Throwing away your Mac is a bad idea.
- Louis Gray
May I suggest to sell The Original Scoble MacBook Pro on ebay and hand the money in for charity?
- Ralf Rottmann
NokiaN97 does widescreen videos with new Qik, by the way. iPhone doesn't.
- Robert Scoble
Wow it must be something big. Please keep us up with details when you're allowed to make them public.
- Asgod Barrantes
Don't throw your Mac away!! Keep it as 'backup', you might need it ... ;) ;)
- Ronald
Asgod: believe me Engadget will be all over this.
- Robert Scoble
This was rolled out to selected laptop users 4-5 months ago, wasn't it? Lots of drooling, if I recall. But you should keep your Mac as a backup. And so far as "I can't tell you how I got this photo ..." is concerned, what's with the name tag on the fellow doing the Vana White?
- Bob Young
Mona you have to fight Allen and I for it first
- Jesse Stay
I'm thinking full solid state, very fast
- Jesse Stay
Nooo... I wanted a Dell 15' with nice reso but no HD. Not avaliable in Europe. I had to buy a MacBook Pro. Received today. Nice but I loved my Latitude.
- Jérôme Flipo
BTW, nice tattoo's Robert! When did you get those?
- Dean Kakridas
And with that very light and low on heat
- Jesse Stay
so what's the specs on it ? intel T9900, DDR3?
- Khaled A
touch screen? that doesn't seem mac-trash-worthy. flips around like a tablet, with touch screen? nah. super battery with built in wimax or 4G connectivity? maybe.
- Chip Ramsey
Dean, per the nametag that's @rockmanusa, Robert's producer/photographer
- Jesse Stay
I'm intrigued by the google map you have attached with it ... battery park city?! Sounds quite interesting indeed, but I won't be interested, unless it can polish my shoes, feed the cats, and wash itself every 3 hours :) Ohh I wouldn't mind if it has a proper multi-touch trackpad.
- Shivanand Velmurugan
Asgod: I broke all sorts of rules to get this photo. Photography is expressly not allowed where I am. It is geek heaven though.
- Robert Scoble
robert - you might want to crop out the person's name who is in the photo :)
- Allen Stern
Well I need a mac for school and Robert, wow you're awesome I'm very impressed.
- Asgod Barrantes
Robert: So how did we get a photograph then?! (good ol' don't give a crap about the rulez eh? :) ) A lot of hype, it better be seriously good :)\
- Shivanand Velmurugan
it was leaked a few days earlier on another site though :>
- Khaled A
Who's the bigger sucker here ... Scoble ... or those sucked in by this post
- Don Strickland
are you serious? c'mon, it's a PC! The main component of any computer is not the hardware, it's SOFTWARE.
- Konstantin
Don: it does a few things your Mac doesn't.
- Robert Scoble
Konstantin: really? Why don't you use a Mac Classic then and why do all Mac fans slobbering when new hardware comes out? Finally you should try Windows 7 on your Mac. You might be surprised. I am running Windows 7 on my Mac.
- Robert Scoble
Francine: I am buying Crunchpads for a different reason.
- Robert Scoble
Can I just point out did a search for "scoble 'Palm Pre' 'throw away'" to see what you said back at CES... and Google already has the comments on this thread indexed?
- Ken Sheppardson
Jeff: I think this Dell will help Microsoft poke Apple in the eye again.
- Robert Scoble
I saw the specs, and it just doesn't *seem* that spectacular. Maybe it makes waffles and prints money...
- Carlton Prest
Nice, thanks for the heads up Robert. Don't mind the fanboy's calling you a heretic. ;)
- Adi
Has me curious. I'm not going to be so bold as to claim in an Apple "fanboish" way that nothing can possibly beat Apple.
- Angus Burton
19 hours of battery is impressive if true
- Brian Hill
"I can't tell you how I got this photo" -- Perhaps by standing next to Rocky as he held one on the NYSE floor yesterday? :-)
- Ken Sheppardson
100+ comments later... mission completed. You won't throw or give away your Mac for a Dell w/ Win 7
- Jonathan Brown
You'll hurt your shoulder carrying that thing around, but man, what a great screen!!
- RobinDotNet
Looks like picture was taken at the New York Stock Exchange. Maybe it's a multi-touch screen?
- Steve de Mena
Steve: all I can say is it has stuff Apple doesn't yet do.
- Robert Scoble
Robin: I have a bag with wheels for my Mac so my shoulder is OK. The photo was taken tonight.
- Robert Scoble
Microsoft Bing: We did not find any results for "tell you why I am dumping my Mac when this comes out but this is the first Dell" ~ giggle
- Don Strickland
I'm glad you have a wheelie bag, now you can buy it with impunity and wheel it through airports all over the world, feeling happy about your awesome laptop. :-) (How much does it weigh?)
- RobinDotNet
@Robert "Steve: all I can say is it has stuff Apple doesn't yet do...." TBH, there has been a lot of things the Macbook line hasn't been up to par feature wise for a long time. This isn't nothing new. My 1yr old XPS has eSATA, "F/W", "ExpressCard", 10in1 MMC, Biometrics, HDMI, Blu Ray, 4USB and integrated 3G all of which would be 'show stoppers' if Apple announced them. So its all relative.
- Adi
Adi, those features would become "amazing" and "new" were they announced by Apple -- much the same way that video is suddenly an amazing new feature of iPhones.
- Christopher A Carr
"has stuff Apple doesn't yet do" ... hmmm ... when placed on a Microsoft Surface it transforms into a puck for Microsoft Surface Hockey, played by waving your hands at the built-in Natal controllers.
- Don Strickland
Will it run Pro Tools. It seems as if I need to use it for digital editing of raw audio.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew: I would imagine it would, but I don't have it to try that, so will have to wait to tell you definitively.
- Robert Scoble
Thanks, Robert. Being out of the music & video biz since '97 has me playing catch up. The KDHX studios where I will be working are a mac house.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Since it looks like a shell.. I will assume its the touchscreen with MS Surface on Windows 7 :)
- Tim Hoeck
looks like old black macbook to me! nothing new at least not in image! whats so special?
- matjeka
To back Robert up, I got to try this bad boy right after him. And I can agree, this will make me switch too (after 25 solid years of Mac OS) Holy crap, Dell must have a secret time machine in the basement if 1/2 of these "special" features are true. WOW WOW WOW, and price...WOW!!!
- sean andersen
Robert, Honestly I am not really impressed by the picture, as some mentioned before it most likely is not Mac OS X, is it? And what about battery life, does it match the MBP 17 inch battery life time?
- Peter Simoons
If this feels better to use than a mac, then it will do well. A shopping list of new features won't matter if it doesn't do the core things that make people love Macs.
- Sam
from twhirl
I don't believe you :) Let's revisit this thread when it comes out and see if you follow through
- Bwana ☠
So this is going to bring beleaguered Dell out of the doldrums? Apple did that, but I'll not hold my breath because of Dell's basic build-em-cheap philosophy.
- Rick Cogley
there's claims it is sporting a Mobile Intel GMA 4500MHD, Series 4 for video.. if so, that's one giant missed opportunity!
- alphaxion
touch screen would be great, there is a big need in netbooks because of the improvement of usable input area
- Mike Chelen
ok, I'm also intrigued. I can't figure out what is so special about this new notebook.
- timepilot
Robert: Can have your Mac when you're done with it? :)
- John Fox
Hmmm ... I am thinking Dell beat Crunchpad to market with a touchscreen running Win7... If so, Yay for Dell, way to go!!! I will definitely want a Z if so!! *Looks around for @RichardatDELL* :)
- Susan Beebe
The way things are going my mom will never get her new computer. I keep telling her something better is just around the corner.
- ChiliMac
I'm assuming it's windows 7 multi touch and gestural support. The surface code that's now part of windows 7...
- mikepk
mikepk: there are more features than that that Apple doesn't yet have. Gotta wait, though, I promised not to leak.
- Robert Scoble
Dont throw it away! Im sure there are plenty of people that would love to have your old mac!
- James Hague
If it doesn't run OS X it's pointless.
- Peter Kruit
Peter: it runs it, but you can't buy OSX legally for use on non Apple computers. I totally disagree with your thesis, though. I'm running Windows 7 right now on my Mac and it works VERY NICELY.
- Robert Scoble
I'm sure Windows 7 is working nicely, but Windows just doesn't compare to OS X. Mind you, I've only been using OS X for a year now. Before that I was a Windows/DOS user.
- Peter Kruit
Peter: again, I totally disagree. It's clear you haven't tried Windows 7 out on your Mac yet. There are many things in it that are nicer than Apple has. Especially the toolbar and especially Google Chrome.
- Robert Scoble
I have tried Windows 7. It's the same registry and DLL hell that it's always been.
- Peter Kruit
Agree with Scoble... Win7 has many things nicer than OSX.
- Adnan
Peter: I haven't had a problem with DLL hell and the registry for years. I guess you still trying to run VB 2.0 apps? ;-)
- Robert Scoble
1. Never put anything into the registery unless it will affect another part of the system. 2. DLL hell ended in Win98. WinXP/2000 added a way to solve all DLL problems with no rebooting, but the coders have been lazy/ignorant (see #1).
- xero
Yes, case in point- and that's a deal breaker for just about any Mac user.
- Dean Kakridas
from email
I switched to Macs 3 years ago but I have to say Windows 7 will make me rethink that decision. It is much more than a "Vista Service Pack".
- Steve de Mena
My husband has a Dell laptop and it's really nice, so I am definitely gonna check the Z out...
- Susan Beebe
Peter: It is possible to install MAC OSX on your Dell thanks to the OSx86 Project: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki... Although it may not be entirely legal this is still going to happen and Apple should roll with it and embrace the hacker culture. If this Dell can run Boot Camp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...), and give users the option of running either Mac or Vista that would be awesome!
- Garin Kilpatrick
Garin: that's possibly the ultimate manifestation of "lipstick on a pig"!
- Dean Kakridas
from email
Dean: No way, Sarah Palin is the ultimate lipstick pig and Mac OSX on a Dell is cool!
- Garin Kilpatrick
Garin: that she is and might be the ultimate candidate for a Dell actually.
- Dean Kakridas
from email
Is there some new synchronization feature using Microsoft's Mesh technology or something? Win7 is suppose to have some Mesh tech built-in.
- Jeff Weber
Dean: Haha! Jeff: Mesh is probably windows only syncing, but I have not investigated. I use http://www.getdropbox.com/ for syncing my files between my PC and Mac, and it works great!
- Garin Kilpatrick
interesting! Windows 7 indeed rocks... and yes - i own macs and pcs
- andy brudtkuhl
Damn hype and secrets are eating my brains clock cycles. Raises fist at Robert ;)
- Mark Essel
I hope you won't need to call Tech Support for it.
- Head Ov Metal
Doesn't look all that impressive to me. It's a Dell with Vista. Whoopty-do. *curmudgeon*
- Hip-Hop in da House
Jason: it doesn't have Vista. Thanks for playing.
- Robert Scoble
any idea if this is a joint effort with the alienware talent they acquired?
- Trey Philips
Even so, it's a Dell with Windows. If it's touchscreen, great. Facial recognition? Bleh. Unless it runs on cold fusion and can predict the future, it's still just a Dell with Windows. That said, I love W7. But I love Mac OS X much more.
- Hip-Hop in da House
Jason: let's talk after you see it. You might still be a Mac fan but you will at least pause after you see the secret stuff this does.
- Robert Scoble
I remember when Apple's PowerBooks had that rubbery/leathery black finish. Dell's bringing the PowerBook-y back, evidentally.
- Wade Dorrell
Fair enough. I believe you saw some things that really were impressive, so I suppose I can withhold judgement. I'm just naturally skeptical of "this is a Mac killer" or "this is an iPod killer" comments, since so many have tried and ultimately failed.
- Hip-Hop in da House
Jason: You are right on. And furthermore, many have not even really "tried". Nothing out there that claims to even compete with Apple products have put close to the level of time, resource, and dollar investment in design and software that Apple has. Anyone who has been in the tech industry for the past 10 years now knows that there's Apple and then a bunch of pretenders and bad imitators.
- Dean Kakridas
from email
That's like saying I am throwing away my Mercedes for the new Chrysler. You still get Dell support and service which has forced me to find new vendors. Wish windows server products ran on os x server. Then we could go all mac hardware.
- Dan Douglass
from Nambu
I've never had a single problem with Dell support. Apple's on the other hand is useless. 10 working day repair time for a machine, compared to next business from Dell. Had to repair a failing disk ourselves because Apple wouldn't replace it, if tech tools said it was bad, 'tech tools isn't any good', and when disk utility said it was bad, 'tech tools is more accurate'. Wouldn't put anything important on Apple hardware or support.
- Russ
first pic: Putting up their dukes, boxer crabs in Indonesia helped Italian amateur photographer Marchione Giacomo score a TKO in the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science's 2009 Underwater Photography Contest. The school announced its contest winners on April 15, 2009. Also called pompom crabs, boxer crabs clench small, stinging sea anemones for self-defense, though the crabs have been known to substitute sponges and other tiny creatures ... in a pinch. Judged by a panel of professional photographers and fine artists, the fifth annual Risenstiel School amateur-photographer contest attracted 918 entries from 23 countries.
- Cee Bee
yeah that's a great photo. i really like the second photo as well of a pigmy seahorse
- Cee Bee
Robert: You're welcome. Here, also, is a link to the Tehranlive.org "about" page. It lists Amir Sadhegi as the contact: http://tehranlive.org/about/
- Jill Elswick
I saw so many of this kind of photo with my own eyes yesterday,I was there when they beat us,our people, to death just for yelling out where's our vote?!!
- TaaTaa
from fftogo
None of this reporting -- None of it -- would be possible without online tools. Robert -- there's the 2010 Web! I seem to remember your earlier question (a few months ago) about the definition of journalism. This is it. It's not up to the "paid journalists" at the NY Times or Chicago Tribune anymore. It's up to you, me, people like @jamesbuck, and the person who took this photo and put it online.
- Curt Mercadante
I'm not really surprised, Iranians are a lot more empowered than people in the West think. It is *not* Saudi Arabia!
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Robert: I didn't even think about the photographer! Thanks for pointing that out. I do believe I'll be looking at all these pics in a different light now.
- Alex Hellstrom
Thanks for getting this out. It's so easy to get lost in tweeting about our silly mundane lives that we forget how important images like this can result in making people aware and helping to make a difference in the world.
- mrsha
Curt, right, after listening to Scoble on a panel about the future of Journalism, and he was the only one "journalizing" it via Kyte, I wrote a post that the future of Journalism is a video camera or in this case a camera. I remember that it was the camera and video camera that stopped Vietnam for instance
- Stephen Pickering
And, putting aside for a bit whether or not CNN ignored the story -- we're now getting news that NBC's Tehran office may have been raided and the BBC has been told to "get lost." Under oppressive, censoring regimes like we have in Iran, North Korea and China -- citizen journalists empowered by new communications tools will be the ONLY way we get accurate news from these regions.
- Curt Mercadante
If anyone ever doubted the revolutionary, real-time impact of Social Media, this photo easily dispels those misconceptions....
- John Fenzel
Amir: you have a fan for life. I hope you do win the Pulitzer Prize. I think you got the iconic photo of the election protests. This one should hang in Newseum's Pulitzer Gallery. Can you tell us how you shot it, and give us more details about what was going on in your head as you pressed the shutter button? To everyone else, don't you love friendfeed?
- Robert Scoble
Amir: when I took photojournalism at San Jose State University one quote stuck in my mind from all those classes over the years "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough." That quote was from Robert Capa, here's an article in Time Magazine about it: http://www.time.com/time... You have gotten close enough. Congrats, I can't even imagine trying to get this close. I hope all comes out well for your country and you.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: I've only been using friendfeed for about 5 days and I'm already in love with it. I guess I picked a good time to try it out!
- Alex Hellstrom
Microsoft's announcement of Bing today shows they are magnitudes of order behind Google. Google moves one step towards knowing the user much better. Microsoft just improves search of "things", not people. The future is people, people! Microsoft I'm not sure gets that yet. Either that or they're way behind.
It'd be much more interesting to use have the live "feeds" be rolled up into searches, although I'm sure this is a much more difficult problem to solve. Streams from twitter, friendfeed, facebook etc should all be readily accessible through search. I think the content that people create is still probably more important than the person themselves...
- Chris Reichow
Chris, but to access *all* the content, and have less data to index, you want the people. The people own the content. It should be indexed by the people, not the content itself. A person owns content, not the other way around.
- Jesse Stay
Interesting note: "A person owns content" I'd certainly like to think this was true, but in today's world I think ownership is significantly diminished. Plus, who said anything about having less data to index, next-gen search needs to increase the available data and timeliness of that data exponentially. It's a tough problem
- Chris Reichow
Chris, with Wave you truly have the ability to own your content. Wave is a technology and protocol anyone can install on their own server, and it's open source. That which you want to stay on your own servers stays on your own servers - you have full control and Google never sees the data. Regarding next-gen search, it's much easier to index a lot more data when you have already indexed the people that own that data vs. indexing just the data.
- Jesse Stay
from email
Both announcements are important, I think, and they're too different to be considered together. Wave isn't about search. (Based on the short videos I've seen), Bing brings *context* and order to search; something that Google's search results appear to be lacking at the moment, and something that people will respond to if Bing lives up to the promise.
- Andrew Terry
Now do you get why we call our new community for Internet fanatics "Building43?" We are just catching Google's Wave. Check out my like feed. It is all "Wave:"
I like 43 because it's essentially the decimal equivalent of 3/7ths. (.428571) Maybe instead of 20% times, all the Building 43 work comes from the 3 days you're plugging away (+1 day meetings and 1 day on 20% time and 2 days for the weekend).
- Louis Gray
I agree Robert. Maybe we should all start wearing T-Shirts that say "I've been indexed" or "So baby... what's YOUR personal page rank?"
- Kevin C. Tofel
Right now I'm sitting next to Steve Broback, who runs the conference. It sold out, by the way.
- Robert Scoble
It's the only conference (TechCrunch reported that there's actually six Twitter conferences) that Twitter is semi officially supporting. Alex Payne, API Lead at Twitter, is speaking this morning.
- Robert Scoble
I am watching the live stream coming from the conference and will click "like" on any Tweet that has a really great point. That way you can see the stream with less noise than you'll see in the search above. Here's a search for #140tc but with display set to only show Tweets and other items with one like or more: http://friendfeed.com/search...
- Robert Scoble
Just how many people are there also blogging or tweeting the conference?
- Robert Freeze
The first speech, by Alex Payne, Twitter's API lead, starts at 9 a.m. Pacific Time, which is about one and a half hours from now.
- Robert Scoble
I want to swim in the pool instead of tweeting
- Jacque
Are you only talking about a live stream of twitter and friendfeed messages? Or is there an actual live video stream going to be available from somewhere? If someone would post a live ustream, kyte or such stream from the conference, that would be cool!
- Charbax
Robert Freeze: there are more than 300 people here (or will be in about an hour). I'd expect most of them to be Twittering the conference, so anything that Alex Payne says will probably be repeated many many times. Having filters is going to be very important to be able to find the "needles" in the haystack that is headed our way in real time.
- Robert Scoble
Charbax: Andru Edwards is shooting video of the sessions but we're not sure it'll be streamed live. I'll try to turn on my Kyte cam if they don't, at least for Alex Payne's speech.
- Robert Scoble
Thanks for doing this, Robert! I hope some cool stuff is talked about and shared :)
- Sam Houston
I'm with Sam - thanks - I wish I was there.
- Robert Freeze
Excellent day is done here so can follow this undisturbed :) I am seriously interested in hearing if Alex Payne says anything about their spam issues. Tx Robert looking forward to updates
- Peter du Toit (S.Africa)
Robert: quick question before the action starts here. You covering Google I/O from tomorrow?
- Peter du Toit (S.Africa)
Robert has said he will cover Google I/O, I can't wait. It's the point Google is going to launch a Twitter/friendfeed killer app, an Intel/Microsoft killer Android OS for netbooks, a TV/Cinema killer Youtube HD monetization plan, a hosting provider killer in PHP support for Google App Engine, a Facebook killer in updated Google Friend Connect and Google Open Social and an iphone/nokia killer in Android 2.0
- Charbax
Peter: I should be there in the morning, but won't be covering everything. You will have TONS of news from there. I am sure it'll be hard to avoid for the next two days. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Steve Broback just opened the conference here. So will have more soon.
- Robert Scoble
Alex Payne is showing off the early days and explaining how he got to Twitter. The stories are all out there, unfortunately not enough bandwidth here for live video streaming. Sigh.
- Robert Scoble
Oh well, we trust you to bring us the best stuff :)
- Simon Wicks
Is twitter going to support OpenMicroBlogging protocol? There should be public pressure for them to adopt this, and adopt federation with other OMB capable services
- Jon
here's another proposal, quit enabling url shortening. This trend is breaking the web, and it sets users up for a bad experience. There are two options that come to mind, either take URL data out of the message and into a separate structured data field just for URL data, or just get rid of the arbitrary 140 character limit.
- Jon
while they're at it, they can add data fields for just about anything, such as location or hashtags. these really don't belong in the message do they?
- Jon
To clarify, people who are interacting with Twitter via an SMS-only interface have no use for links anyway, why not strip them out and only make them available as supplementary metadata for API/web clients
- Daniel J. Pritchett

THIS CONTEST IS OVER. THE MONEY HAS ALREADY BEEN GIVEN AWAY. I'm giving away $4,500 of my money. The contest will be here in friendfeed between now and Tuesday afternoon. Ends 3 p.m. Austin, Texas Time. Winner will be picked live on http://www.ustream.tv/studio at 4 p.m. Austin Time. Two ways to win: First way to win ($1,000). Leave a comment here. We'll pick one winner out of a hat randomly. Second way to win (Two prizes of $1,750 each). Leave a comment about how you will use the money (use only one comment here). I'll pick my favorite two messages and announce a winner on Tuesday afternoon. Good luck!
- Robert Scoble
Lets be honest- there are few people who literally put their money where their mouth is. Mr. Scoble you continue to impress me. And I have said this before the contest.
- Alyx
I declare myself ineligible for the first way to win :)
- Douglas Gourlay
Do you have to be an American? Cause I could use a new laptop :) Plus the USD>AUD exchange rate is pretty good at the moment ($1000 USD = $1500 AUD)
- Bryce, Low in Sodium
OK, I'm changing my comment to go for one of the $1750 prizes. I will offer to donate all of it to a mutually acceptable charity in exchange for an appearance with you and Steve on the Gillmor Gang. If Jason can buy his way onto Twitter, maybe I can buy my way onto the Gillmor Gang!
- Kent
Are you still going to the XMPP meetup on tuesday?
- J Allen
I would use the money to 1. Donate and support our local Milwaukee tech community (events like web414.com, BarCampMilwaukee.com, and Bucketworks.org) and 2. purchase some more tech items (i.e. mac mini, video camera, webcam) to enhance and encourage more interaction with development and the tech community.
- Sam Dodge
$1000 for a random comment. I suspect we'll have a record number of comments. But what kind of hat will you be pulling the name out of? Austin Cowboy hat?
- Andrew Leyden
well, this is one way to get me to actually use my friend feed account =)
- Travis
I'm echoing the earlier comments, free money + your reach = most commented thread.
- Steven Cains
I could use it. Ill be out of a job in 2 weeks.
- Armando
Second way to win (Two prizes of $1,750 each). Leave a comment about how you will use the money (use only one comment here). I'll pick my favorite two messages and announce a winner on Tuesday afternoon. Good luck!
- Robert Scoble
Isn't this a nice way to test how scalable Friendfeed entries really are? :-)
- Yuval Atzmon
Will use it to buy Arrington a hairpiece after the TIME article.
- Mike
Please, no, you're better than Ben Stein (although that's not saying much) Are you trying for the most comments ever on a Friendfeed post? Because I can certainly see that coming.
- The Web's Wendell Wittler
Nicholas - would like to work with you at Rackspace, was a senior systems design engineer for Sony Broadband SW Development + Broadcast Integration Division(s) SW Systems Integration and testing, also senior technical project manager on Google's infrastructure upgrade + Verizon's FIOS fiber-to-the-premises nationwide. I also spent ten years in post-production in hollywood as a senior tech support engineer / consultant to the stars. I like bad food, long hours and the warm glow from completing projects.
- Nicholas Chase
Hmmm, how do you post a comment on FF...??? :-)
- I Spy
I would use the money, to help buy a mac for the family. We are in need of a new one, and right now our current one (a powerbook) is starting to die out. I already have some money saved up, but not enough. Thanks for doing this Robert! :)
- Techno Todd
thanks for making friendfeed notifier go insaaaaaaaaaaaaaaane

I'll use the money to buy a laptop for my soon-to-college daughter, as well as to fund her scholarship searches& college visits this summer. She's leaning towards working in special education, continuing the volunteering she's done with her high school's Options Program (http://www.paulvi.net/academi...).
- Craig Eddy
My friend (14) and I (15) are working on a subscription web service that we want to launch this summer and some additional runway and start-up capital would really be helpful. We do have some experience with this stuff -- we did iJailBreak (www.ijailbreak.com) a year or so ago and had millions of hits and a million downloads and a lot of coverage (Gizmodo, TUAW, Digg front page multiple times).
- Ben Feldman
if i didnt know you, i would have un-friended you for a post like that. "i'm giving away money. details to come." Congrats on the new gig!
- fansnap
If I win, I'll spend it all on ale and whores. I'm in need of both.
- Onur Cengiz
$1,750? Ok, I'll give the half of it to a charity, that is: $875 — and the other half will be my contest's gift. My contest? The one who donates the most to that charity wins those $875. And yes, I'm serious :)
- directeur
I don't know about the tax consequences. I'll try to find out. Basically this money is money Cisco paid to me and I'm just shipping it back out. So, this money will be counted pre-tax, I'm sure, and you'll probably need to pay tax on it.
- Robert Scoble
First comment: Hope my comment gets chosen!
- Kevin Poirier
you can give away money in this economic times? ;)
- Simon
I'd be using the money to finance my freelance work and get a half-way decent video camera. I'm working with a friend of mine on tooloftheday.de (nothing to see there yet) to produce videos of popular tools, tips, tricks, howtos, etc...
- Holger Eilhard
Throwing my piece of paper into the hat. Crossing my fingers!
- Troy Malone
man, my feed is going crazy... stop it guys :)
- Ingo Di Bella
OK Robert, I'll bite and leave a comment here.
- Herne
Second comment...I will use the money to buy as many clever domain names that I can in hope that one day, when you are creating your "next big thing" that you will have to purchase the domain name from me realizing that you had in fact, through me, had purchased these domain names in the first place.
- Kevin Poirier
If I win: I will use the money to lend out some of it on Kiva.org, give my brother (12 years old) his own domain/hosting so he could start a wp-blog there and maybe buy Spotify premium =)
- Anton Johansson
I would buy a new macbook pro with it. I have the old one, and Was hoping to buy the current one. I would then give the old one to my brother and I would use the new one! :)
- TheHenry
I would use it for the prizes I'm giving out daily on my twitter game @I_spy_treasure. Robert, you can win it back... (and so can anyone else...)
- I Spy
I will use part 2 to donate to Kiva.org and match it with Cisco's matching gifts program
- Douglas Gourlay
I would donate it to my homeless shelters.
- imabonehead
I'm giving my winnings to congress to spend wisely : )
- Joseph
Congratulations to both you and Rocky on the new jobs.
- Ron Schott
Count me in! Could use the extra $$ to buy a mac and see what all the hype is about.
- Tim
I would create a company called One Laser Per Child.
- Lasse Johnsen
This is my comment. I would use the extra $1750 to pay for me and Lindsay's trip to Gnomedex this year. It would probably be enough for us to come up and stay a few extra days in Seattle.
- Internet's Tad
That'd put a dent in my taxes. Ugh, freelancing has its pains.
- Andrew
Is there a third way to win? I'd use the money to offset part of the costs of moving to Portland in the spring. Moving from New York with next to no connections to see what it's like living on the west coast for a while.
- Mark Trapp
Sadly, I'd use most of the money to pay bills, but in the spirit of ff, I'd take a smaller portion of it to play a similar game on my ff.
- Randall Rodakowski
What I'd do with $1000? Get them converted to Euros :) Would most likely be spend on "offline" needs, like a new bathroom
- dieck
I suppose spending it on crack and hookers wouldn't win the prize, would it?
- Ian Betteridge
Interesting; I'd give a bit more than the the money to an unemployed friend for necessities(car repair, rent, food, getting back her phone with Nana Lemon singing Nena's famous anti-balloon protest song) in cash and perhaps a small gift
- RAPatton
I would use the money to go biking in Tibet and give everything that's left to the Tibetians.
- Henrik Johansson
Robert why are you giving away money - not that I am complaining- but curious! :)
- Susan Beebe
I'd spend mine on women, booze and a Mac.
- Ed Hudson
I'd use it to stretch the time I can work for equity-only before our startup gets funded! (Why doesn't federal stimulus money go to something like this which actually creates jobs and innovation instead of banks and auto companies?)
- Dale Larson
I will use the money to go PyCon, learn new skills, network, mention how generous Robert Scoble is, and do a sprint to improve FriendFeed PyAPI--which, by the way, you should use to select the random winners from this thread. https://launchpad.net/friendf... Thanks in advance.
- Chris Lasher
Clever way to show the power of friendfeed!
- Emee Pumarega
For $1750: I would pay a portion of my wife's college tuition, buy my daughter a netbook, and my son a practice guitar amp.
- Mattb4rd
Great idea! Count me in. I think you should give your money away monthly.
- Grace Ciccone
I'm Here. Wow. I''ve thrown the laptop up on a 56" JVC LCD HD. Convergence! Just watched you on the Gillmor Gang. Feels like TV to me. It's great. Something's definitely happening.
- Stephen Pickering
I'd spend the money on a new display, I really need one
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
Not my first comment on a Scoble posting here, but first with a potential payoff.
- Tom Landini
I'm in. How I will use the money? will buy server for XdbE project
- Elmira Gazizova
With $1,000 I could buy all 57 Used & new "Naked Conversations" books from Amazon and still have enough to buy bottle service at the club.
- Andy Fields
would like to be able to try new technologies while still being a student and on a student's income = ($0)
- Shane Grant
Cool, count me in :-) I would use the money by buying 2 HTC Fuzes for me and my love.
- Sarah Peterman
Count me in! (for the first way I guess :P).
- Mauro Borione
What can I do to get your $$$ Robert? How about a virtual dance from my dogs?
- Jeff
get Diabla my pit bull puppy hip surgery sooner rather than later
- shayne catrett
I would use the money to help fund a small-scale electronics lab, which has been a dream of mine for some time. It would serve as the perfect place to plot and create the robotic army that will eventually take over the world! Also it would teach me lots that would make me very attractive to an employer, or capable of creating a business of my own.
- Daniel Bruce
It would be hard for me to decide how to spend the money. There is so much, yet so little, being given. Because I'm a crazy Linux-lover, I think I should take the selfless route and donate at least part of the money to various Linux/open-source programming projects. Though, I would have to be careful to make sure that the money is not wasted in the style that Jeff Atwood describes (http://www.codinghorror.com/blog...).
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
<cold><oddsized><red>here's my comment</red></oddsized></cold>. I've made my comment colored and differently shaped because supposedly those will get drawn before all the other regular looking comments. It's cold too because that's how the Knicks got Ewing first in the draft.
- Todd Hoff
Well, I need a new kidney, and there just happens to be one available on Ebay for $1000. (The previous portion of this comment is an utter lie; both my kidneys are doing fine, I am gainfully employed, do not need the money as much as so many on this thread, but Mastercard would really love to have it.) Congrats and good luck with the new venture, Robert.
- Phil Essing
Hey as long as were giving away money - count me in ;)
- Rob Jones
sweet, a thousands eh? converted to $ JMD that's 90k, groceries for 2 months:P
- Gordon Swaby
i'd like to thank my good friends olasofia and tav for mentioning this opportunity to win $1000 randomly, and if gratitude to one's friends isn't enough, how about this: i will give the $1750 for the best answer to this question: now that there are 100,000 people paying attention, what single action can we all do next tuesday that has the greatest social impact globally?
- happyseaurchin
For either amount, I would look to pay down some of my pressing debts and apply the rest towards a rainy-day fund. The 10% paycut I took three months ago has not helped things.
- JA Castillo
I'm on spring break now and my school was nice enough to lend me a Canon 20D (a little old, but I'm still glad to have borrowed it). Usually, only people who are part of the after school photography club can take it out, and seeing that I'm not, I was quite lucky. They gave me a 28-135mm lens, which looked ok to me. It was the last lens they had available, so it was take it or leave it....
- Michael Forian
hmmm just leave a comment for a $1,000 dollars, not sure what to say...
- Kevin Tunis
$1750 for a cheeky mobile app, any more would be telling
- Yant
I'm here. pick me :) How would I use? I'll buy a netbook and some books.
- Dogan Tuncer
Testing the mix, testing, testing, one two, one two, - is this thing on?
- Martha
I would use the money to do what I do with all of my money...support my wife through graduate school :p. Thanks for the opportunity, Robert.
- Neal Jansons
Give it to Michael Forian! He seems so well-meaning!
