I've had the same problem. It appears that grub is not being upgraded. 11.04 should be using grub 1.99, but it's being left at 1.97 or 1.98. This was my solution. At the grub> prompt, type the following: set root=(hd0,1) linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=/dev/sda1 initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38.8-generic boot The tab key gives you auto-completion - so use that to find the latest versions of vmlinuz and initrd. You can use: ls and ls (hd0,1) to find the partition that has your kernel etc. This should get you into ubuntu. You will probably get a warning about not being able to use unity. That's another issue that you can leave for another day. Once into ubuntu, open a terminal window and type: sudo grub-install /dev/sda (enter your password when prompted). If you now do a full restart, you should find yourself back in ubuntu. There is some misinformation out there. Note that the command is grub-install and not install-grub (as one set of instructions has it).
