...i'm with ya... I've had that same problem intermittently for last few days. I tried going to "Trending Topics" and then back to "Home" and that seemed to fix it, 2-out-of-3 times. I'm trying out Spaz on the Pre Now.

glad it aint just me. would be gladder if it just worked. LAG, let us know how you like Spaz.
- chrisofspades
...what I like about Spaz is it's easier to setup and log into multiple accounts, including Identica/Laconica microblogging sites, and it has a better search interface, IMHO. on the minus side, I think it relies a bit too much on cacheing, as sometimes I logon and see tweets in my timeline that are several days old, or older. Now, perhaps there's a setting to change that, I just haven't found it yet. Overall, it's certainly worth a try. only 2 Pre TT clients so far, it deserves a spin...

I have this issue with Tweed and with Spaz. It's really weird. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I'd use Twitter's mobile site more often, but I can't find a link to see DMs on there.

Maybe it has to do with the API calls for 3rd party apps? I think Twitter changed something in reaction to the most recent outages. Twee was working fine until then.

I worked next to the Pixar compound for 3 years. They have a lunch room, yet they kicked out one lunch spot and are still trying to get Semifreddi's to move. Love them both. If I have to choose though I'd have to go with Star Trek. If only because since I've sat through more actual programming hours of it, I feel I can identity with characters better. But still hard choice. And all you pleaders, pick a side :P lol.

What if we take Jar Jar Binks and Ewoks and take them to the fifth Star Trek movie and let William Shatner and George Lucas co-direct it? It would also include a scene where Han shoots last while Vader shouts "Nooooo!".
- Jemm
Star Trek, definitely. If I'm honest, the Adult Me only liked Empire and (to a lesser extent) Jedi, so SW doesn't have a chance. And yes, BSG (2003) would reign above them all, by miles-n-miles.

i think i would have to choose Star Trek, because only a few years after segregation was outlawed in 1964, Star Trek showed a *black* man as Captain Kirk's superior (Commodore Stone in "Court Martial") as well as a black man who was a computer genius (Dr. Daystrom in "The Ultimate Computer"). ok the black computer genius had a nervous breakdown, but still. :-) whereas the first Star Wars movie had about 193 different kinds of aliens but no black people, despite having been partly filmed in Africa. :-D

agree totally, Apple seemed a little behind the developers at first but are now providing them with so much. The one thing that steered me from the iphone to start was the missing mms etc, but the experience of using the phone more than makes up for it. Now with 3.0 filling a lot of gaps, and potential of new device... they've got one hell of a phone/pda/entertainment device.
- Matt Randles
If Palm has made one mistake with the Pre rollout, it's failing to realize how fickle and FUDdy the tech press can be. You'd think they'd have learned their lesson after the beating they took over Foleo, only to see an entire market segment (netbooks) emerge around that form factor/use case within a year or so. The only thing that's changed since CES is Apple announced cut-and-paste and some other incremental updates yet the Pre buzz is already waning.
- Ken Sheppardson
I don't want to change from Verizon to AT&T so the Palm Pre is interesting ot me. I know there are others like me
- Marion Vermazen
I agree that Palm won't knock off Apple from their throne. But will easily beat out many of the also rans who have squandered their positions. Palm gained massive market share in the PDA and early smart phone space because they understood useability. I think this fundamental understanding is showing through in the Pre (at least from what we can see in the videos). In addition, Palm was...
- Joe Brinkman
Agreed with @Joe, Palm has still nostalgic developers that can't wait to have another Palm in the palm of their hand. A decent one, the Pre, probably. Moreover the application development model will be SO easy that almost immediately, Pre could benefit of most of the must-have social/web/communication apps...
- Jean-Charles VERDIE
Palm doesn't stand a chance against Apple in this - the iPhone is ridiculously sticky- i.e. there's a huge switching cost, and of course there is all the media - including games. Everyone seemed to forget that Apple didn't just close their R&D facilities. I think Android is really Palm's biggest problem - because 'everyone else' is going to end up using it, and so there'll be a bunch of free with contract Android phones before too long. Where is Palm's opportunity in this?
- Robin Barooah
By the way, you don't have to knock the iPhone off it's "throne" to have a chance against it. Garter says in 4Q08 iPhone's 10.7% smartphone market share is fourth behind Symbian (47.1%), RIM (19.5%), and Windows Mobile (12.4%). If Palm can flip, say, 1 in 7 Symbian, Rim and Win users and not a single iPhone user, they still knock iPhone out of fourth. http://blog.symbian.org/2009...
- Ken Sheppardson
Maybe I'm mistaken, but isn't the Pre exclusive to Sprint? Second point, they're abandoning their base of developers. I personally know someone with a rather large Palm application that could take a very long time to rewrite and migrate. It's too bad they don't have a way to port/recompile existing apps for the new device.
- Rob Fahrni
@Ken - Does just running symbian count as being a smartphone somehow? I had a Nokia N70 before my iPhone, which ran Symbian, was very featureful and had PIM apps etc, so would probably count in these kinds of figures, but the reality was that trying to use those features via a phone keypad simply didn't compare and as a phone it was worse than my old 2110. How many actually usable smartphones are running Symbian and WinMo - vs traditional handsets that happen to be powered by these OSs?
- Robin Barooah
A lot of doctors use the Palm Treo because there are good medical apps for it, so as those wear out it will be interesting to see if they go for the Palm Pre or the iPhone. I still miss the old Palm V as a PDA though, that was a great gadget.
- Sally Church
Another way of looking at it is - I use my iPhone all the time, and yet I only make about one phone call every other day - I don't even have the phone app on the dock anymore. I think that's the world these devices have to compete in.
- Robin Barooah
@Robin - I'd say that it's a smartphone, by virtue of running Symbian OS, or at least in the sense that it's pretty open as far as mobile phones go (or at least it's the "most open" phone I've had, in terms of being able to install 3rd party applications and Multimedia Framework plug-ins, and to an extent replace some native ones (Opera comes to mind), not to mention being able to move almost all data freely to and from it) although I'm biased (not that I want other platforms to fail, of course)...
- Tyson Key
I'd say that the Pre still has a good chance in the market, assuming that Palm manage to advertise it right for the not-as-tech savvy folks, as Apple have done with the iPhone. Still, they should keep the power-users in mind, too.
- Tyson Key
Several things weigh against Pre, not the least of which is that you can't buy one. Palm is taking a drubbing in its sales while all the focus is on an intangible. The quality appears to be there but again mass production and this climate could present issues. Finally, this is G3 vs. G1 so it has to be more buggy and less tested. Pre would have to seduce me to make me lose my iPhonaphillia.
- Phil Boiarski
Robert, you are very brave (IMO foolish) to predict Android will run a long second to iPhone. The Apple app market is saturated and devs are sick of it. Real smart phone users will gravitate to Android and when some handsets finally come on to the market it will make Apple's 20 million phone sales look relatively puny.
- Bob Sonin
I hope Palm has long term plans. If they put all their marbles on the Pre and it fails, they're done.
- Rodfather
I think Google is building their foundation right now. I expect very big things from them in the future both on Android and other Social platforms they're building. Never underestimate Google.
- Jesse Stay
Don't forget the huge demographic of frustrated Windows Mobile users who aren't waiting for WM6.5/WM7 to come out. Combine that with legacy users who still wax nostalgic about their old Palm/Handspring PDAs (see above, myself included) and I see big things for Palm IF they can get the Pre out before the next iPhone.
- Jericho
The smartphone market has to be at least 4 x the PC market - a computer in every pocket, and a computer that is also a fashion accessory. There must be room for more than a couple of players. Palm need to focus on stabilizing the company and delivering the best experience they can with the Pre.
- Shauns
Robin: I was just using Gartner's definition of smartphone and market share numbers. I think IDC doesn't include Symbian, but the other numbers and proportions still hold. iPhone is at best third behind Blackberry and Windows Mobile. IMHO the Pre has the potential to plop down in the middle of the market and while it may win over an iPhone user or two I think it's more likely to appeal to the RIM/WinMo user...or the folks who have held off from jumping into the smartphone market.
- Ken Sheppardson
I agree that its going to be daunting for Palm to woo people to move to Sprint. But having seen the development model (video on youtube) It seems like Palm really has got it right! Html+CSS to create your apps! Though its at risk of alienating its current developer base, aquiring new developer base is pretty trivial!
- Dilip Krishnan
Good to see Palm becoming relevant once again.
- LinkingIndiana
Depends on what kind of keyboard I'm using... If my laptop with no numpad, I just use xxx.xxx.xxxx but if it's a standard keyboard with a numpad I xxx-xxx-xxxx since I use just one hand for that (habit from working in telecom).
- FFing Enigma
The best way is like this: +1-425-205-1921 -- that way the phone number always works, even if you're overseas. (the +1 needs to be your country code). That's my phone number, by the way.
- Robert Scoble
If you use spaces, a lot of times they won't be clickable on iPhone or on Skype. So, always +1-425-205-1921 with dashes. Periods don't work sometimes too. Brackets don't work sometimes too.
- Robert Scoble
Doesn't always work, Robert. For instance, dialing a local call with the one first will return an error tone followed by a message that the call cannot be completed as dialed or that there is no need to dial the 1.
- FFing Enigma
Tina: not true here. That's weird. I've been all over the world and never had it fail.

There is no standard format for phone numbers. My phone number regex's can be quite long and ugly.
- Jason Wehmhoener
123 456 5645 for example, depends on the area code and whether it's an international number. then it might be +41 20 232 2323 for example. That's not my number, just formatting examples.
- Richard A.
Alix: put a + in front of that and it'll work internationally, at least on modern phones and modern phone systems. So mine is +14252051921
- Robert Scoble
Same as Alex and Robert, it works with phones better that way
- Sally Church
(xxx) xxx-xxxx ... but I always dial the country code.
- Brandon
Brandon: if you go overseas a lot, that won't work. You first need to enter a Plus sign. I've hit that many times before. Or, dial 00 to get the operator. I find a Plus always works. At least in six countries I've tried it in. So, that's why I always list +14252051921 which works great for machines, or +1-425-205-1921 for humans (which also works for machines).
- Robert Scoble
I'm slightly obsessive about having the ()'s for some odd reason - kills me not to have them
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Marco: get an iPhone and see what resolves to be clickable. You'll quickly get over your fears of getting rid of the ()s. Believe me, I've tested this a LOT. +1-425-205-1921 is the best way to go. Unless you live in Tina's neighborhood cause they have switches that can't handle the newer phone numbers. I only use cell phones, though.
- Robert Scoble
"dialing a local call with the one first will return an error tone followed by a message that the call cannot be completed as dialed or that there is no need to dial the 1." [tone pedant] SIT - Service Information Tone [/tone pedant] - legacy translations in Bell switches are really something.
- John Craft
John: I've been in 40+ states and I've never hit that. But I'm sure there's a few switches somewhere it'll hit. But keep in mind that I'm almost always using a cell phone.
- Robert Scoble
Here in Silicon Valley I thought they mandated 11 digit numbers. Will have to check.
- Robert Scoble
Different areas have different requirements for the 1 before the number. Some places allow it, others require it, others don't allow it at all.
- Gabe
Robert: I've never seen a phone with a plus button on it. What countries are those in?
- Gabe
+xx x xxxx xxxx. Works universally for landlines and mobiles (from a mobile).
- Rob Kramer
Gabe: all phones have a plus. Even my iPhone. That works in all countries I've been in. China, Europe, Israel.
- Robert Scoble
Was just talking to a friend about how parentheses are disappearing from phone numbers.
- John
"I've been in 40+ states and I've never hit that . . . I only use cell phones, though." Exactly. This is a legacy from electro-mechanical switch days, when dialling "1" on your local step-by-step switch automatically sent your call to the toll switch. It was never necessary in SPC or digital switches, but done anyway. Cell phones don't experience this as the numbers would be sent en bloc anyway.
- John Craft
I tend to use (xxx) xxx xxxx but also +xx xx xxx xxxx as well.
- Ian May
@Robert: That's just how I write down numbers (on paper -- for my own use). If I'm listing a contact number that will be seen by many people, I always type in the country code. Have to dial them myself regularly... ;)
- Brandon
xxx-xxx-xxxx easier for me to do with the numpad
- Chieze Okoye
Definitely +61-x-xxxx-xxxx. I see so many US websites that assume a US phone number and won't accept an international one. The same goes for sites that only accept zip codes. Most international users only know 90210 so that's what they put.
- Peter Kelley
xxx.xxx.xxxx. Mostly cuz i'm a Network guy and speak IP all day. Just a preference, really. May have to re-think this based on Robert's worldly advice. ;)
- Jericho
Robert: Do you have a photo of a plus button on a phone keypad? I did a GIS for "telephone" and didn't see any.
- Gabe
Gabe: just took a screenshot of my iPhone, so you can see: http://www.flickr.com/photos... Press and hold 0, and it creates a plus sign (+). Presumably, that's standard behavior on other cell phones.
- Mark Trapp
xxx.xxx.xxxx -- probably due to IPv4 influences... Not sure what will happen when IPv6 hits critical mass... They better put a ":" character in the number pad
- Mark Philpot
Mark/Robert: I meant actual telephone keypads, not computer displays. Obviously a computer display could have any arbitrary buttons but I've never seen a real keypad with anything more than 0-9#*.
- Gabe
Gabe: + is a substitute for your international call prefix, which in many countries is 00. In the United States, it's 011. Presumably you don't need a + sign on regular phones because you'd be typing it in manually anyway. The plus sign came about as a standard (E.123) when electronic communications became the norm, so computers could recognize a standard telephone format.
- Mark Trapp
Mobile is xxxxx xxx xxx. Landline is xxxx xxx xxx. Numbers in the cities are different.
- Kol Tregaskes
In India, phone numbers are 10 digit but area codes can be 2 or 3 or 4 digit so the format is dictated by the area codo. See http://www.immihelp.com/nri.... The US 3-3-4 format does not work.
- Atul Arora
xxxxxxxxxx if local. If I have to separate it (like at work as I do collection) I do (xxx)xxx-xxxx (no spaces). I personally do prefer xxx-xxx-xxxx.

I don't care for the social aspects in boxee, probably because I kick it oldschool and chat by the watercooler. The hulu and other streaming integration is a nice +1 over xbmc. For me, watching tv still has to be on the couch, the browser is far too distracting to watch tv on my computer.
- Jamie Dool
I believe you can get Boxee on the Apple TV as well..
- Ari Braginsky
Am I the only one who hasn't used Boxee?
- Tyson Key
It is still invite only I believe...
- Ari Braginsky
I'm most interested in the Hulu access, but I can get that through any UPnP device with PlayOn now. What I really want is nice tight integration of online content like Hulu and Netflix with OTA content so I can get rid of cable and still have my wife be able to watch shows without needing an instruction manual.
- Alan Cheslow
Ari, Boxee is open to everyone now, except for the Windows version.
- Veronica
Ok good. I still had some invites left just in case :D
- Ari Braginsky
Boxee is nice on a Mac. Although I can't always pull up network shows. My one complaint is you can't leave it full screen on a second monitor (TV) and do other stuff. For that, Plex is much better.
- nsnadell
One nice bit of recent Boxee news is that Apple has approved an iPhone remote app for Boxee on OSX (they recently Tweeted the news today) and it should be on the App Store soon.
- Ari Braginsky
Boxee on a MacMini is great. It makes up for the deficiencies in FrontRow, and handles way more video formats. Netflix, Hulu, ABC HD work great for me. (BTW Lost episodes look great on a bigscreen). There are some occasional bugs that need to be worked out, but their support has been timely thus far.
- Jericho
Boxee is a great way to ditch your cable TV and only have Apple TV as a real media center. I'm in the UK, just cut my cable TV and will stop paying the 140£ TV licence from now on (an Apple TV is 180£ so not a bad return on investment). Their forum is excellent and very supportive if you have bug or install issue. GREAT PRODUCT, go and give it a try!

Cool beans, my good friend Mike is now on friendfeed http://friendfeed.com/snowcra... I'm looking forward to his participation on here. He's an expert on software/hardware testing as well as server room energy use/efficiency.
Heya, Mike. I have an interest in server room energy use, too. Hoping to knock out a DCU certification next year.
- ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
@ha3rvey - I'll have to check out the DCU cert. when I return to the office. Our initial focus is on servers with tracking power usage and utilization.
- Mike
I've learned something today. I didn't know you could specialize in "server room energy use." I thought all you had to do was keep it cool.
- Jimmy Walker
Welcome. Subscribing to you now, as going green in our datacenter is a big push in '09.
- Jericho
Welcome to the jungle, Mike. :) We all float down here.

I actually played around with this when I had the Samsung Epix for a day (was disappointed with the phone), it worked very well, even over EDGE.
- David Wilson
I liked TweetDeck but find myself using Twirl more.

Confession: I've yet to install. I have issues with Adobe Air. It is a personal thing.
- Mona Nomura
Louis - I love your "bacon" search recommendation for Mona. Tweetdeck really is awesome.... very happy with it, except it HOGS CPU / RAM like nobody's business...sigh
- Susan Beebe
So true Susan. I have to quit it a couple times a day to free up resources. :(
- Bwana ☠
I love Tweetdeck. However, 1. it is a bit of a CPU hog, and 2. it takes up a fair chunk of screen estate. Having said that, I have Tweetdeck/GMail/Friendfeed/IRC/Skype open on a secondary machine, so it doesn't slow my main machine down, and doesn't distract me so much, as the screen is off to one side, and I don't get pop ups on the main monitors.
- Ian May
I started using Tweet Deck last night, switching from Twhirl and I really like it!
- Joe Dawson
Ian is the man! smart cookie, I'll have to re-purpose one of my spare laptops for that!
- Susan Beebe
I played with TweetDeck for a few days, quickly realized that it was a vastly inferior interface for monitoring feeds than Google Reader, and then uninstalled it. I miss it not in the slightest.
- Sean McBride
Tweetdeck works well if you have a huge amount of screen real estate; otherwise I would suggest Twhirl which takes up very little space
- Glenn Batuyong
I installed TweetDeck last evening and quickly bailed out of it. Too much of information and it is like information quicksand...you hear a giant sucking noise and are instantly lost in the information quicksand....mt re-visit it later.
- kamla bhatt
Sucking noise? Mine sounds like a frog croaking.
- Tapio Kulmala
I easily control all my Friendfeed and Twitter feeds (and many hundreds more) under a few dozen well-organized folders with Google Reader. GR provides enormous leverage over a huge flood of news and information. I've tried every feed manager out there, and so far none of them have come close to GR for me. But you need to know what you are doing to extract maximum benefits from using GR in this way. TweetDeck struck me as a conspicuous waste of time -- extremely inefficient.
- Sean McBride
By the way, no offense to those who love TweetDeck. We are all expressing our honest opinions here. If you love it, if it provides good value for you, all the more power to you. God bless. Follow your bliss.
- Sean McBride
It's all about exchanging ideas, Sean. No need for apologies or disclaimers in my feed - ever. And thanks to everyone for their feedback!
- Mona Nomura
Thanks, Mona. You've always struck me as a clear-eyed, hard-headed and no-nonsense type. :) Tell us what's on your mind and let's see if it makes any sense.
- Sean McBride
Sean - thanks for your words. :) I like hearing feedback from real users, so this thread has been extremely informative to me. So thanks, you guys! That said... First, I have an issue with sites and services that require any publishing tool in order for it to be efficiently utilized. That has and will always be my number one complaint with Twitter. Second, I do not like AIR or...
- Mona Nomura
How timely. Been wondering about installing this myself. How is it that I think up a question and someone or many someones on Friendfeed answers it? ESP? What?

I think I was given my Acorn Electron (like BBC computer) when I was 9 years old, so about 1985 I think. It still has the best game ever on it - Bug Blaster (a Centipede clone) - I couldn't stop playing that game and regularly got stupidly high scores on it. :-D
- Kol Tregaskes
The first one I ever used was a TI-99/4A. The first I ever owned was a Coleco Adam, and I think it was 1983.

Sinclair ZX Spectrum :) My father brought it home when I was quite young, but I soon learnt how to punch in source codes for games from german computer magazines (which were the only ones available with page after page with source codes). Then Commodore 64, Amiga, etc.

My very own first one was an HP that I got for college in 1995.
- Jaemi Kehoe
Apple IIe I think, in 87 or 88. I was six, showed a natural ability to use the computer and was entered into a summer program where I got one with learning software.

I don't remember what exactly it was but I do remember that it had a 75 MHz Pentium processor in it. And that was back in 97 or 98 I believe.
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
An off-the-shelf Pentium 2 machine of some sort. I got in the game late :) Not sure exactly when, but I believe sometime in the late '90s
- Daniel Bruce
Atari STe again - 8MHz with 512kb of memory - that's right, half a megabyte of RAM. And I built a DB of all my brothers' several hundred books on it...

The Little Professer, documented here: http://stackoverflow.com/questio... (big page, load patience required). Impressive catalog on that single stackoverflow question.

An HP in 1994. Ah, how I miss Windows 3.1... I still remember my parents flipping out because I was "going too fast", clicking away setup alerts and installing things while they were still thumbing through the manual.

A Texas Instrument LED watch. Well, maybe not a computer but hi tech then...
- Håkan Dahlström
Commodore 128. I think around '84-85..
- Rodfather
TRS-80 Step Dad brought it home... thought we'd like to "play" with it...and we did! He knew Cobol, Fortran, Pascal and Basic... Taught us lots of fun stuff. we even tore up punch cards for hobbies
- Susan Beebe
My brothers had a TRS-80 that i would play Zaxxon on for hours (it was on a cassette.) It had a pretty cool multimedia game called Space Probe: Math which was based on the movie The Black Hole.
- sergiooo
Anyone who answers Commodore 64, I'm following right now ;) -- one of my favorite machines of all time. My first, though, was the Texas Instruments TI-994A
- Jorge Escobar
Apple II+ with (I think) 48k of RAM...was upgraded soon after to 64k. I was 9.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
first one I ever used was one of these Compaq Portable deals in the mid 80s... my dad would bring it home from work. he'd use it for CAD stuff. I would play a flight simulator game on it or mess around with DOS commands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...

TimexSinclair1000. But I had more fun with my C64.

TRS-80 Color Computer with 4k of memory and programs loaded from cassette!

Mine was a Commodore 64. Had to give it a solid whack when you turned it on so that the monitor would kick in. But I loved her!!!
- Bob Maltais
Commodore VIC-20 in 1982 (w/ tape drive), followed by C-64 in 1983 (floppy).

A 8086 clone running DOS. Did three things with it: played games, wrote stuff on WordStar and learned how to erase a hard drive.
- Steven Perez
@Steven I erased my dad's Disk 1 of Lotus 1-2-3. He called the company up and told them what happened. They sent him a new Disk 1 at no charge. I thought that was really cool. You'd be hard pressed to find a company that would do that these days.

I'm thinking top mobile apps should include Pandora, Fring, FFToGo, NetVibes Mobile, Brightkite, Twitterberry (for Blackberry users)...what else? And anyone with an Android have ideas of top Android apps?
- Sarah Perez
for those of us still rockin' an s60 phone, I'd say Twibble is the best twitter client I've found. Also GMail (checking multiple Apps accounts from one application++) and Google Maps (the stand alone apps) are quite handy.
- Michael B
@Hakan: Hmmm, I don't really think of Safari as a "mobile app"...
- Sarah Perez
@Morgan You think Twitterlater Pro is the best mobile Twitter app? I heard a lot of good things about that one...
- Sarah Perez
I would definitely have to charge you a small fee for that information :)
- Charlie Anzman
Remember the Milk... Finally competent integration with webapp and mobile device and excellent task management. Also Twitterfon -- Definitely the best twitter iphone app.
- Mark Philpot
My mom has decided that Twitter sucks. Her primary reason is that there is no context for the conversations so she has no clue WTF everyone is talking about.
At least someone else agrees with me that Twitter is useless for conversations.
- xero
which means that she would love friendfeed.
- Carlos Ayala
You have to be pretty dedicated to actually follow a convo on Twitter. Especially when you're a third party or multiple people are involved. I told her Twitter wasn't all that. She hasn't told me her thoughts on FF yet, but I guess she might randomly show up on this thread and put in her 2 cents :)

twitter is a tough sell to newbies, esp if they have preconceptions that it's IM. it's not.
