They have saved a million bucks but they've wasted millions on poor player signings. - beersage
Most interesting was how all the different clubs share detailed expense information. Hey, I did some work for Shoretel. Very cool. - Todd Hoff

LOL beersage - Todd Hoff
Peter: I thought that was funny too. Just cause I was at AT&T park I took a phone call right in the middle of the video too. Over my AT&T run iPhone. I should have edited that out, but I'm too lazy. - Robert Scoble
Schlough was a little thin on the details - other than being much smaller, how is this system saving them so much money? Did he say they are now using VOIP phones throughout the stadium? I would be interested in hearing how this new systems works. - Chris Murphy
Your phones communicate digitally over an ethernet cable. It can work over your data network. So your phone boots! The sound quality is excellent which is why people pick it over other technologies. With their GUI it can integrate IM, route phone calls to follow you, dial others through the gui, hold conferences, listen to voice mail, and do lots of other cool things. - Todd Hoff
Good one beersage. Still waiting for that ROI on Barry Zito! - Mike Doeff
Chris: fewer inbound phone lines. Equipment uses less power. System easier to maintain (far fewer employee time to add a new line). Less proprietary wiring, etc. - Robert Scoble
You have to wonder what AT&T thinks of this (the Giants play in AT&T Park). - Mike Doeff
Mike: he hints at it: AT&T was happy to see the Giants modernize and get rid of PacBell equipment. And anyway the Giants have one of the first iPhone apps for any park. - Robert Scoble

It's Official: Palm Pre is Coming June 6 - http://mashable.com/2009...
“Palm Pre will be available nationwide on June 6 in Sprint stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack, select Wal-Mart stores and online at Sprint.com for $199.99 with a two-year service agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate.” - Leo Laporte
"if you’re not really sure what all the fuss is about, I’ve got one word to say: multitasking." - yeah, right, multitasking for WebApps, glorified AJAX objects, which is all Pré is capable of running at the moment. - ianf ⌘
ianf: Can you give an example of something you'd like it to run that it can't? - Ken Sheppardson
Have you pre-ordered one yet? - Aaron
Ken, no, in fact I'm all in favor of WebApps, especially now the HTML5 is around the corner with local storage etc., only wanted to underline the apparent inflation of the term "multitasking," which used to imply something wholly different where native-platform objects were concerned. I am sure Pré is capable of all that, and, with its own SDK, will in due time be able to keep pace with... more... - ianf ⌘
For anybody new to webOS, O'Reilly has a rough cut of the book by Palm CTO or Software Mitch Allen. It's available from ORA as a rough cut at http://oreilly.com/catalog..., and the first chapter is on Palm's developer site at http://developer.palm.com/webos_b... - Ken Sheppardson
FYI, there's a Palm Pre room with lots of info https://friendfeed.com/palm-pr... - jcunwired
Ian, have you read the WebOS SDK? - jcunwired
No, not yet, if ever; merely some press reports. Decided to wait until Pré (a) migrates from vaporware to realware; (b) survives the first few months. Perhaps then. Life's too short and all that. - ianf ⌘
Just checking to be sure all your knowledge isn't derived from Apple fanboys :) - jcunwired
Did I pass? Was there anything incorrect in my pre-Pré statements so far, or are you just glad to talk to me? - ianf ⌘
I'd take exception to "glorified AJAX objects, which is all Pré is capable of running at the moment", and will back it up when I have time to cup/paste from the book I linked to. - Ken Sheppardson
I....hate.... rebates - Bwana ☠
Ken, my "glorified AJAX objects" is, of course, emo shorthand, which as we all know IS the new English, so there! <http://friendfeed.com/bitchfe...> - ianf ⌘
What's the incentive to get the Pre over the iPhone if the phone, and the plan (from Sprint) are the same price as the iPhone and plan from AT&T? Unless your just an Apple/AT&T hater (well I understand hating on AT&T) why wouldn't you just go with a proven platform? I just think Palm is being extremely cocky here with their pricing. I predict fail!! My last hope is Android. C'mon people, make a cheaper phone with a cheaper plan. - David
David, Sprint's Simply Everything plan is $99 a month, and includes services that AT&T doesn't offer (Sprint TV, GPS navigation, others). I believe for a similar plan from AT&T you're spending $30 more a month without additional services. Pre multitasks, has physical keyboard, Synergy and removable battery - and it's not on AT&T :) - jcunwired
jcunwired....Yes, but it's still 99$ a month. Not everyone needs to be Robert Scoble here. Give me an option without GPS and Sprint TV (who cares) and whatever other junk I don't need and charge me $30 a month for email/web. - David
And don't even get me started on text messaging. That should be free on any data plan! - David
You don't necessarily need Simply Everything... I believe the least expensive plan with the Pre is the $69 Everything Data plan, which is unlimited data & SMS, GPS nav, Sprint TV, etc... same as Simply Everything... but with 450 minutes + 45¢/min overage. Sure, cell phone plans should be cheaper.... but that's not a Pre vs. iPhone issue - Ken Sheppardson
True Ken, I should have pointed that out. One other selling point for Sprint, after 7PM its all free calling, and any calls to another Sprint phone are free. No more dumb assed rollover minutes, yippee!! - jcunwired
Either that is a really smart more or a really dumb one (June 6th). It depends if people are willing to wait for WWDC or not for the new iPhone. - Michel
I thought for the longest time it was really dumb, but I'm now thinking that Palm is going to get a lot of free press - for the foreseeable future anything written about the iPhone will also include the Pre. Damn ballsy of them I say. - jcunwired
jc: bingo. Every time somebody says "Pre" and "iPhone" in the same breath, Palm wins. - Ken Sheppardson
Ken, your absolutley right. I was just venting:) My original point was (although I didn't make it very well) Palm needs to hit this one out of the park to stay alive according to some people. What better selling point could there be (to compete with other smart phones) than a lower price? It just suprises me that thier price isn't any cheaper than the competition. All things concidered, even with the few dodads that the pre has over the iPhone, I don't think Apple has anything to worry about. - David
David: One of the obstacles to a lower price is a pesky little supply vs. demand issue... I suspect that in the first few months Palm isn't going to have any trouble at all selling as many units as they can make at the proposed price. If you can sell everything you make at $199 net, why price it at $99. Given Palm's history, I think they're probably much more likely to drop prices as manufacturing ramps up than those other guys with a fruit for a logo. - Ken Sheppardson
David, Apple hasn't got much to be worried about because they by definition aren't going to dominate the market, only to dominate the most profitable high-level segment of it (which by necessity of numbers never will be very large in absolute figures). As for Palm Pré competing on price - you couldn't be more wrong there. Obviously, they intend to compete on some unique mix of... more... - ianf ⌘
Weighing out features, there's no reason the Pre shouldn't be priced equally with the iPhone. At least on paper the Pre surpasses in every area except internal memory at the device level, and the App store as a concept. Palm will do just fine. - jcunwired
"At least on paper," noted. This eerily equivalent of the piss matches we used to have over the bus- and cpu-clock speeds of yesteryear, which OF COURSE had major impact on what people ended up buying. Personally I wish Palm all the success, because that would then mean Apple's forced to take notice of the rest of us (I may sound like Apple fanboy at times, but am anything but. I only hate it less than that Windoze gift from Satan to Mankind). - ianf ⌘
No piss match here, just reality. Your comments have been so absolutely positive, how could we EVER think you were a fanboy? </sarcasm> :) - jcunwired
Perhaps if you could supply me with few templates of to-you-not-offending/ "unfanboyish" comments, I might have a clearer view of what is it that you wish I should emit. Then the rest would be just a matter for negotiation over reimbursement level, channels, etc. - ianf ⌘
Ken, "If you can sell everything you make at $199 net, why price it at $99." Forgive my ignorance, but if you can sell phones at $199 (don't forget the stupid rebate) couldn't you sell more of them at $99? Besides, it's not the phone price I have a problem with, It's the plan price. I would gladly pay $300 for a Pre if I could get the plan at $50. I guess I'm not coming from the same... more... - David
David: I think for the first few months Palm we be able to sell Pres as fast as they can make them for $199. You can't sell more than you can make. :-) - Ken Sheppardson
Just read that Best Buy will be applying the rebate for you. $199 at Best Buy. - Chris Gardner
Ken...then there's the shortage of handsets. http://www.engadget.com/2009.... - David
Chris....Best buy gets it!! That's going to make a lot of people happy. - David
If a phone costs $171 to make, it doesn't make a lot of sense to sell it for $99. David - you hit the nail on the head, you WANT one. Now the task is to find the carriers with the best coverage in your area and compare plan prices. My guess is that Sprint will be the most competitive. I'm not nuts about paying $75 a month (after taxes) either, but with the features realized in... more... - jcunwired
Can you watch Hulu on the Pre? If I could replace my Cable bill by using a smart phone/laptop for TV, then I can justify a $99 monthly bill!! Or!!! (the wheels are a turnin') maybe I'll just buy a friend a slingbox for their birthday and sponge cable off them!!! - David
I guess I'm the only one who thinks this stuff is too pricey! http://news.cnet.com/8301-10... - David
Hulu will be available once Flash comes to WebOS, which was announced for sometime later this year (though it may be a surprise at launch).. Same for slingplayer - supposedly an app will become available. Edit: dunno what its all about, but Sprint TV comes with their data plans. - jcunwired
When you view a smartphone as a computing platform, what you get in that little package really isn't bad for the $ - jcunwired
Awesome - ralphsaunders
"then there's the shortage of handsets" -- That was my point. If there's a "shortage", one could say they're actually charging too little. - Ken Sheppardson
Oh Ken!!! Don't say that!!! :) Do you think the shortage is legit, or is it by design? - David
I'm quite confident Palm is and will be making as many as they can, as fast as they can. Whether that's sufficient to meet the demand in June and how the tech press will respond to inventory issues--if there are any--is yet to be seen, but I'm pretty sure that if Palm sells through their inventory they'll be very, very happy. - Ken Sheppardson
When Apple ran out of supply, we got "Isn't that amazing, look how popular this is!". When Palm runs out it will be "Palm you suck!" :-)) - jcunwired

Does Palm Pre have a chance against iPhone? IMO: No, but it might not matter - http://scobleizer.com/2009...
agree totally, Apple seemed a little behind the developers at first but are now providing them with so much. The one thing that steered me from the iphone to start was the missing mms etc, but the experience of using the phone more than makes up for it. Now with 3.0 filling a lot of gaps, and potential of new device... they've got one hell of a phone/pda/entertainment device. - Matt Randles
If Palm has made one mistake with the Pre rollout, it's failing to realize how fickle and FUDdy the tech press can be. You'd think they'd have learned their lesson after the beating they took over Foleo, only to see an entire market segment (netbooks) emerge around that form factor/use case within a year or so. The only thing that's changed since CES is Apple announced cut-and-paste and some other incremental updates yet the Pre buzz is already waning. - Ken Sheppardson
I don't want to change from Verizon to AT&T so the Palm Pre is interesting ot me. I know there are others like me - Marion Vermazen
I agree that Palm won't knock off Apple from their throne. But will easily beat out many of the also rans who have squandered their positions. Palm gained massive market share in the PDA and early smart phone space because they understood useability. I think this fundamental understanding is showing through in the Pre (at least from what we can see in the videos). In addition, Palm was... more... - Joe Brinkman
Agreed with @Joe, Palm has still nostalgic developers that can't wait to have another Palm in the palm of their hand. A decent one, the Pre, probably. Moreover the application development model will be SO easy that almost immediately, Pre could benefit of most of the must-have social/web/communication apps... - Jean-Charles VERDIE
Palm doesn't stand a chance against Apple in this - the iPhone is ridiculously sticky- i.e. there's a huge switching cost, and of course there is all the media - including games. Everyone seemed to forget that Apple didn't just close their R&D facilities. I think Android is really Palm's biggest problem - because 'everyone else' is going to end up using it, and so there'll be a bunch of free with contract Android phones before too long. Where is Palm's opportunity in this? - Robin Barooah
By the way, you don't have to knock the iPhone off it's "throne" to have a chance against it. Garter says in 4Q08 iPhone's 10.7% smartphone market share is fourth behind Symbian (47.1%), RIM (19.5%), and Windows Mobile (12.4%). If Palm can flip, say, 1 in 7 Symbian, Rim and Win users and not a single iPhone user, they still knock iPhone out of fourth. http://blog.symbian.org/2009... - Ken Sheppardson
Maybe I'm mistaken, but isn't the Pre exclusive to Sprint? Second point, they're abandoning their base of developers. I personally know someone with a rather large Palm application that could take a very long time to rewrite and migrate. It's too bad they don't have a way to port/recompile existing apps for the new device. - Rob Fahrni
@Ken - Does just running symbian count as being a smartphone somehow? I had a Nokia N70 before my iPhone, which ran Symbian, was very featureful and had PIM apps etc, so would probably count in these kinds of figures, but the reality was that trying to use those features via a phone keypad simply didn't compare and as a phone it was worse than my old 2110. How many actually usable smartphones are running Symbian and WinMo - vs traditional handsets that happen to be powered by these OSs? - Robin Barooah
A lot of doctors use the Palm Treo because there are good medical apps for it, so as those wear out it will be interesting to see if they go for the Palm Pre or the iPhone. I still miss the old Palm V as a PDA though, that was a great gadget. - Sally Church
i think you need to ask will Palm Pre knock Microsoft OS's out of the picture for some? Will HTC have to step it up as some have suspected they are with a new phone coming out? - Uncle CW™
Another way of looking at it is - I use my iPhone all the time, and yet I only make about one phone call every other day - I don't even have the phone app on the dock anymore. I think that's the world these devices have to compete in. - Robin Barooah
@Robin - I'd say that it's a smartphone, by virtue of running Symbian OS, or at least in the sense that it's pretty open as far as mobile phones go (or at least it's the "most open" phone I've had, in terms of being able to install 3rd party applications and Multimedia Framework plug-ins, and to an extent replace some native ones (Opera comes to mind), not to mention being able to move almost all data freely to and from it) although I'm biased (not that I want other platforms to fail, of course)... - Tyson Key
I'd say that the Pre still has a good chance in the market, assuming that Palm manage to advertise it right for the not-as-tech savvy folks, as Apple have done with the iPhone. Still, they should keep the power-users in mind, too. - Tyson Key
Several things weigh against Pre, not the least of which is that you can't buy one. Palm is taking a drubbing in its sales while all the focus is on an intangible. The quality appears to be there but again mass production and this climate could present issues. Finally, this is G3 vs. G1 so it has to be more buggy and less tested. Pre would have to seduce me to make me lose my iPhonaphillia. - Phil Boiarski
Robert, you are very brave (IMO foolish) to predict Android will run a long second to iPhone. The Apple app market is saturated and devs are sick of it. Real smart phone users will gravitate to Android and when some handsets finally come on to the market it will make Apple's 20 million phone sales look relatively puny. - Bob Sonin
I hope Palm has long term plans. If they put all their marbles on the Pre and it fails, they're done. - Rodfather
I think Google is building their foundation right now. I expect very big things from them in the future both on Android and other Social platforms they're building. Never underestimate Google. - Jesse Stay
Don't forget the huge demographic of frustrated Windows Mobile users who aren't waiting for WM6.5/WM7 to come out. Combine that with legacy users who still wax nostalgic about their old Palm/Handspring PDAs (see above, myself included) and I see big things for Palm IF they can get the Pre out before the next iPhone. - Jericho
The smartphone market has to be at least 4 x the PC market - a computer in every pocket, and a computer that is also a fashion accessory. There must be room for more than a couple of players. Palm need to focus on stabilizing the company and delivering the best experience they can with the Pre. - Shauns
Robin: I was just using Gartner's definition of smartphone and market share numbers. I think IDC doesn't include Symbian, but the other numbers and proportions still hold. iPhone is at best third behind Blackberry and Windows Mobile. IMHO the Pre has the potential to plop down in the middle of the market and while it may win over an iPhone user or two I think it's more likely to appeal to the RIM/WinMo user...or the folks who have held off from jumping into the smartphone market. - Ken Sheppardson
I agree that its going to be daunting for Palm to woo people to move to Sprint. But having seen the development model (video on youtube) It seems like Palm really has got it right! Html+CSS to create your apps! Though its at risk of alienating its current developer base, aquiring new developer base is pretty trivial! - Dilip Krishnan

Palm Pre handled, handed out to celebrities? - Engadget
"There seems to be no shortage of chatter about celebrities and their new Palm handsets today. We already knew that stars attending the Independent Spirit Awards would be getting a swag bag containing -- among other things -- a Palm Pre, and based on the coverage we're seeing from the event (held on the 21st), they at least got to handle them. It's actually difficult to say if Palm was giving the device out that night or putting people on a waiting list, but what it does make clear is that the Pre can't be too far from launch if the company felt comfortable enough to throw them into such an uncontrolled setting. Does this mean the release date is nearer than we think, or is Palm just hoping that a little of that star power rubs off on the phone? Either way, we're super jealous of Eliza Dushku." - Victor Ryden from Bookmarklet

An Open Letter to my Two Mortgage Companies - http://blog.stealthmode.com/2009...
Francine, hang in there. It's really time to clean house in the financial sector. Past time. - Karoli
Francine, I linked to this piece from my blog post about opening up the news industry. "Here's an example of the kind of reporting I find riveting, Pulitzer-worthy, written by an amateur, with passion. " You really get the feeling what it's like to be in the bind you're in, which we all are in to a certain extent. - Dave Winer
What frosts me is that people who have made solid, good-faith efforts to maintain their mortgages, like you and my neighbor (who has been laid off for six months now) are the ones taking the hardest hit. Billions of dollars sidelined by the keepers of the money pipeline, while good people suffer. - Karoli
right there with you Francine. I have two conforming 30 year fixed mortgages (one on my home and one on a condo we purchased for my Mom to live in - since she could not afford her home anymore). At some point if things don't start to come back we will have to let one or both go. I will NOT spend my children's college funds, my wife's and my retirement savings and all of our liquid savings trying to "save" these two properties that are now worth more than 100k less than what we owe on them. - Brian Roy
The real problem for the economy is that people are now locked in. You can't take a job in another city, you can't take a job on the other side of the metro-area - because you can't move. I wish someone smart would tell me what I'm supposed to do... because I haven't got a clue. - Brian Roy
The unfortunate problem is that housing prices are *still* too high. I empathize with your plight but the solution you reference actually keeps the value of these homes artificially high. It perpetuates the enslavement of good solid working people (like you) to a mortgage. Historic home value to income ratios are in the high 2s to low 3s (higher in CA). Recently, the ratio has been >10 in this area! I wish I knew how to help those caught in this situation while ensuring housing returns to a sane level. - AJ Kohn
Fine... let us walk without damaging our credit... then we can purchase something else at fair market value. As it is the combination of the unemployment rate, 45% market loss, and 20-30% loss on housing puts MANY people (even those like me who saved and saved and saved) in bankruptcy. - Brian Roy
And here is the really shitty part. I didn't buy this house just because I wanted to move... we relocated for my wife's job. That is right... we moved for work... and because of that we are now in an awful position. We are not alone. - Brian Roy
@Brian: I'd definitely support walking away without damaging credit. And I concur, a lot of people are getting caught up in this who don't deserve it. - AJ Kohn
Jason - it ISN'T IMAGINARY.... The bank is still charging me interest on it and collecting payments on it... - Brian Roy
Francine, I'm just reaching that point myself with Citibank. First time that I've been unable to make a mortgage payment. - Greg Guitarbuster

Good luck getting through this. Working hard to get working myself. - pjeedai
Jason - Actually the asset was perfectly valued at the time. The thing about asset values is that they are not static EVER. How do I know it was perfectly valued - it was APPRAISED for slightly more than the purchase price. - Brian Roy
Wow, Jason, that's brutal. Values are 'fantasy' because a bunch of bankers got greedy and complicated with their machinations. It isn't like we had anything to say about it. Of course, the problem is clear - homeowners like Francine are now being forced into a box where the only option is to allow foreclosure, which benefits no one. Why not refinance at the devalued balance and at least recover the majority of the value? Keep in mind, Francine didn't finance with 0 down...she loses all and most. - Karoli
Jason - You are wrong. My money (the house) isn't gone. My losses on stock investments are gone. You seem to fall into the "well you should have known better" camp. Like everyone who bought a place for their family to live in a 36 month span (the peak) was an idiot. The reality is this house isn't an investment... it is where we live. The problem was people like you who seem to believe that it was all "assets" and "investments" and people making "bad investments". - Brian Roy
As far as being in denial goes - it is the BANKS that are in denial. If they really think people will continue to pay INTEREST on value that has evaporated... Any business in my exact situation would file chapter 11, have the debt written down to the current value and move right along. I have no such option. There are MANY of us. - Brian Roy
$800k house - Allen Stern
The risk in getting an interest-only mortgage is that if property values fall you will have to come up with the difference for the decrease in value. - Chris Johnston
Look, I understand it's a sensitive subject but any asset can tank. Home, 401K, Stock, Baseball Cards. Sometimes your timing is bad. You buy into a mutual fund and it goes down 30% the next year. It sucks and it's awful but it's what happens. Whether you *intend* for that asset to be an investment or not - it is. Home values are wickedly out of line with income when looking at the historic trends. That *must* correct for this situation to resolve. I'm for ways to let good people out of these bad situations. - AJ Kohn
Assets gain and lose value for a reason, their movement isn't random. In this case, risk was criminally misrepresented. This created a large distortion in the market. - Cliff Gerrish
The other correction I'd like to make to AJ Kohn's statement is this: If my 401k loses half its value, it means I have to work longer to retire. Not great; not the end of the world. If my home loses half its value and I'm required to pay off a loan and can't get financing, it means losing my residence. There's a substantial difference there. - Karoli
Such an interesting discussion. Also had one on my blog, and one on Huffpo. We are a nation divided on this issue. But here's the point: I could walk. That's easy.I practice non attachment to material things. My daughter would take me in for California, and in AZ I have a rental I can live in. But it destroys the block, the neighborhood, my own 40 yr credit record, the market in general. And what does the bank get if it DOESN'T work with me? A bigger loss. I work in 1 state, own home in another. - Francine Hardaway
Here is an interesting exercise. I bought my house about 3 years ago. I've paid the bank about $115,000 in payments, 95% of which is just interest. I also made a substantial down payment. So let's say I've given the bank - to date a total of 180k. So, if I'm asking them to write down the principal by say 70k how do they lose a cent? I get that it hits the books, but that is paper value anyway. - Brian Roy

I fell in love with him after Dark Knight <3 - Mona Nomura from IM
I fell in love with him when he was on Empire of the Sun. I was this little girl watching this movie twice a day. hahaha - Shevonne
I didn't get all the fuss about Dark Knight... then I saw the movie and ... I still don't get it :{ - vijay
I didn't like Batman Returns, so I am kind of weary to watch this one. I will though cause the Joker is my favorite villain - Shevonne
Dark Knight was PHENOMENAL. - Mona Nomura
Ledger is badass, I mean, really badass as The Joker, so you will definitely dig it, but the movie is close to grossing a Billion dollars! Only 3 movies have crossed that line before: Titanic, LoTR, and PotC. Why?! - vijay
I hated Titanic. That movie sucked. The only good part was when everyone was dying. Sad, huh? - Shevonne
Because it was the first movie that was over hyped but not crappy in a LONG LONG TIME. - Mona Nomura from IM
YES!! Thank you Shevonne! Finally someone who agrees with me. God, I never understood what people saw in that movie. - vijay
@vijay you know what killed me. If her arse would have gotten on the first boat to begin with, Leo could have been on the door. haha....then she throws the damn necklace in the water when that could have set her family for generations. Grrrr....... - Shevonne
I still haven't ever finished watching Titanic. And I'm really not worried about it, either. - Ladybug Heather
I liked Titanic. /end of small voice. - Mona Nomura from IM
I know! The movie is a fairy tale; you need to leave your brains outside the theatre before you watch it. - vijay

wait, what happened to the *small voice*? It grew up pretty quickly. :p - vijay
I liked Titantic Kate Winslet was in it. - JA Castillo
See, Johnny? That's why I never saw the point in it. - Ladybug Heather
JA, I like Kate too, but not the movie. I don't hate the movie but I never understood why so many people go ape shit over it and why it is the top grossing movie all-time. - vijay
Everytime this goes by in my feed, I read it as "Terminator Salivation" and can't help but chuckle... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Oh I'm so torn now. I don't mind Bale, but his movie voice is so fake, it bothers me a bit. I'm a huge terminator fan, and I'm really looking forward to this movie. I hope it's half as badass as it looks. - Will Higgins™

I remember the turning point to true coffee love for me. College, senior project at NASA. The scientists and contractors had a big coffee thermos / pump thing you'd put a quarter in a jar and take a cup. Enough long nights in the lab led to bigger and bigger cups. Never quite gotten over it. - mikepk
