Hey, Kids! I wanted to post a quick note about a new gadget & camera-focused blog Gadgety Goodness. :) It's another Posterous blog. I decided to separate my gadget posts so that they are easier to find if you're not necessarily a fan of my ink blogs or other miscellany. I'm trying to be better at keeping up with my own blogs in addition to my blogging at Google+ as my blog, but some longer form stuff I want to write doesn't seem appropriate there. Anyway, I'd appreciated it if you'd subscribe to the new blog, and spread the word. It makes it easier for me to keep the content coming if I have an audience! :D Permalink | Leave a comment »

Saying goodbye to my old iPod nano... It's getting sent back to Apple this week for the recall. Poor little guy! Even though it's unlikely I would really use it again, I'll still miss having it in my gadget collection. :( Permalink | Leave a comment »

Apologies for the lack of posting. If you're not following me on Google+, you're missing a lot of my shares. It's kind of become my blog in a way since it's so easy to share things (and have them be cross-posted to Twitter) from Google Reader, in which I tend to live in thanks to my professional blogging gig. At any rate, you may or may not have known that I went to CES 2012 a few weeks ago for my work with Netbook News. I had a pretty good time (it's kind of a brutal schedule, so it's not all fun), but I still haven't had a chance to go through my photos and videos. I typed up a huge journal entry trying to recall all the stuff that happened while it was still fresh in my mind. Eventually I'd like to post snippets from it. Another thing on my radar right now is Macworld/iWorld. It's my first time attending; I was able to snag a press pass for it. I went on Wednesday, press preview day, which was alright. Since I'll be hitting up the exhibit floor on Friday (and likely Saturday), it...

Here's the last of my half of the donuts from the first batch we ever bought from Psycho Donuts in Campbell, CA. It's a raised donut (I think that's what they're called...?) with key lime pie-flavored icing. It was good, but it's my least favorite of the three. But that's mainly because I now seem to prefer cake donuts to raised donuts. It was a fairly large donut, too. I probably could've just eaten half, but then the other half would've gotten too stale and ended up in the garbage. No wasting here! :) Anyway, I think we successfully found a donut shop where we would want to be repeat customers. The challenge now is to limit how often we visit, both for our health and our budget. Psycho Donuts is on the pricier side, but I can say without question they're worth the price. (No, I didn't have a Sierra Nevada Celebration ale with the donut -- ewww! -- I just used the box as a contrasting background. :) ) Permalink | Leave a comment »

I forgot to take a photo of the donut before I took a bite. Oops! I posted previously about going to Psycho Donuts in Campbell, CA. This is my 2nd out of 3 donuts I picked out (we bought a half-dozen) -- the so-called "Drunkin' Punkin". According to Psycho Donuts' own blog here's the description: "The Drunkin' Punkin' is a Chef Ron masterpiece; his own Plymouth Rock. We start with a bourbon-spiked pumpkin cake donut. Seriously. We top it with cheesecake icing, fresh pecans, and a cross-hatch of maple and caramel drizzle. If the pilgrims knew of this donutrocity, they may have landed in Santa Cruz rather than Plymouth Rock." It was a damn tasty donut! Permalink | Leave a comment »

Aww, I miss living around the corner from Psycho Donuts. So good. Le sigh :-/

Last night I had a hankering for donuts and was able to track down a donut shop that was open until 9 PM, Psycho Donuts. They have a lot of quirky donut flavors, like this raspberry one. I forgot its quirky name, unfortunately. But it was quite tasty! We were worried that the donuts would be kind of crappy since we got to the place fairly close to closing time. But no, my raspberry donut tasted fresh and yummy. I have a key lime pie donut and another one with some kind of white frosting, caramel drizzle, and pecans waiting for me. :) Permalink | Leave a comment »

I'm usually wary of the tech news articles that come out when a new, hot phone-of-the-moment is announced and is compared with previous models, especially before the hot phone has actually been released! However, you can take specs and known factors and use them for research if you are considering phone X or phone Y, in this case, the Apple iPhone 4S or the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I'm also wary of articles that claim to know definitively what phone you should get, without considering individuals' needs and use cases. That's not doing the buyer any good. I just posted an article on Netbook News that presents a lot of major features for comparison between the two phones so that if you are considering getting one or the other (lucky you if you get both! Will you be my friend and lend them both to me? :) ), you can make more of an informed decision than just asking a random salesperson at a big-box retailer or a mobile carrier store on the spot which phone you should get. I know Friday's...

The weather out here seems even more mercurial than back in Chicago. Took this photo (and edited with Camera 360), then a few minutes later the sun was blazing and the clouds broke. Now, hours later, the blah has again given way a little to the sun. - http://jezlyn.posterous.com/the-wea...

(image courtesy of Fanpop) Hey, Castle fans! We're nearing the season 4 premiere of Castle on ABC. West coast (where I am) still has a few hours to wait, so I'll probably stay off the social nets in a little while to avoid some spoilers. Check out CastleTV.net's post for the premiere episode, "Rise" (though there are some spoiler-ish photos and videos, so be forewarned!). Permalink | Leave a comment »

via arstechnica.com Earlier I had posted an article earnestly asking whether or not it were possible for someone do to full blogging from a mobile-OS tablet. I had concluded that for the work I am doing now, not my personal blogging, it would probably not be feasible on a mobile-OS tablet, but now I have reason to try again. I may still run into problems, because as far as I can tell, I cannot e-mail posts to a Wordpress blog like I can with Posterous (that's a major reason I switched to Posterous). So if I were to type up and format the whole article on my tablet, I'm not sure how I'd actually post it to the site and stil insert photos and tag the article properly. The Wordpress app for iOS (or webOS) doesn't work completely to my satisfaction, unfortunately. But I'll definitely look into other writing apps for the iPad. It might be useful for composing most of the article and pasting it into the Wordpress app, then switching over to my laptop to do some final, small tweaks....

As of yet, I have not been in a Microsoft Store. However, tonight when we went browsing around Valley Fair and stopped by the Apple Store, look what we found right across the way: And I mean literally across the way from the Apple Store: We were amused by the sight. :) When the news first came out that Microsoft was going to make their own retail stores, I really didn't care about it. I wasn't interested in any of their latest products then, except maybe the Xbox 360 and the Zune, sort of. I had already moved on from a Tablet PC to a unibody aluminum MacBook (which I'm still using now). But now, Windows 8 devices, Windows Phone phones, and even some of the upcoming Ultrabooks have me pretty eager to see what they'll have to offer at the Microsoft Store. I'll at least enjoy being able to play around with some Windows Phone phones and Windows 8 tablets at a venue nicer than Fry's. I like going to a Sony Style store to check out all Sony's products, so I expect the Microsoft Store will...

Arrived early this morning for the first day of IDF 2011. Been fairly busy (and tired), but I took a little walk away from the press room and looked around. Took this quick pano with Pano and tweaked it in PhotoToaster. Permalink | Leave a comment »

We stopped at Kinokuniya right before going to Tomi Sushi. Saw these a little bit before we left. I assume these were released when Steve Jobs announced his resignation, but I'm not sure if all of these books are biographies or what. Was just amused to see a whole shelf dedicated to these books. :) Permalink | Leave a comment »

I'm seriously asking! This is not one of those blog posts where I highlight a problem then post the solutions I've found. I really have not solved this problem yet. It annoys me to no end that for most of the blogging that I'm doing now, I can't do it on any of my tablets. Or at least, I can't do full, finished posts with graphics and proper tags and such. I could type up most of what I want to post on my tablet, but then I have to use my laptop to finish off the post. Well, let me break it down even further. For my Posterous blog, I can do text-only posts like this one, or some posts where there's only one accompanying picture via e-mail fairly easily. However, for picture-heavy posts where I am embedding screenshots between paragraphs, I can't post via the Mail app as I normally would because there's still a problem (that's been a problem at least since iOS 4.0, perhaps even earlier than that) where text entered after a photo gets stripped out of the e-mail message. So a few of the...

via en.akihabaranews.com On the one hand I love colorful gadgets, or getting colorful cases/accessories for my gadgets to personalize them. However, when I use my camera, I want to be as inconspicuous as possible so that if I'm trying to take candid shots, they're truly candid. Can't do that if my camera's a bright, attention-getting color. Hmmmm, I'm torn! :) Permalink | Leave a comment »

via thisismynext.com Chumby's at it again with a new, nettop-like product called the Chumby NeTV (kind of an awkward-looking name already). It can stream feed info from Twitter, FB, SMS, etc. along the bottom of your screen like a news ticker. You can also use a mobile app to sling photos and URLs to the TV. Kind of interesting, but I don't know how useful this can be, ultimately. The demo video shows the news ticker and it seems distracting because it's always there scrolling, yet it doesn't seem useful enough because the fonts look too small to actually read from a normal viewing distance. Sending photos and URLs to the TV are kind of useful features, but again, the fonts on a normal webpage aren't normally suitable for reading on a TV. It's possible this is configurable, but even so, I personally don't feel like being able to surf the web on my TV is a comfortable or useful feature. Why wouldn't I just have my laptop, smartphone, or tablet to surf these sites? The one useful thing...
