thunderbird on OSX is good enough? When I tried a year ago it lacked many features - Loic Le Meur
im using a combination of outlook (work), gmail (mobile) and mail.app (at home) via imap and it works a bloody treat - Mark Allanson
Loic, I use Fluid to turn Gmail into a standalone app. I don't get too many emails from day to day but my archive is fairly big (about 50,000 messages). Yet, Gmail is always responsive and search is fast. I can't say the same about Mail.app with IMAP. - Ole Begemann
I use Thunderbird, and have one Gmail account in there. I used to have more Gmail accounts in Thunderbird, but whatever I tried, it kept acting rather buggy. Asking me for my passwords constantly, then not logging in anyway. - Rosana Kooymans
Loic, I have about 12,000 messages using Mail and Gmail IMAP: it definitely feels the burn. If I need to get to my archives, I wind up just logging into Gmail proper. - Mark Trapp
I just switched to Thunderbird from Outlook. My .pst corrupted for the last time. So far I have been pleased, but I miss my plugins (salesforce, xobni, etc...) - Alex C. Williams
Loic, have you considered Mailplane? I tried the Gmail IMAP thing on Apple Mail, and it's good, but if you use labeling at all or have lots of messages (and you have more than I do), the web interface is better. Using Mailplane makes Gmail work in a separate window and is really good - http://mailplaneapp.com/ - Stephen Collins
Although useful, I find Gmail's imap implementation a little too quirky for regular use with Mail.app. - Scott Jarkoff
Wow, Loic, why on earth are you getting so many messages? Something is really wrong with your workflow and communication practices. So many emails will render the medium useless. You need to meet with a communications consultant, I think! Good luck! - Christine Cavalier
I am still on a quest for the perfect email client. Christine, I will say that sometimes, that much email is unavoidable. I have an Outlook PST of about a year's communication with one client project clocking in at just over 26,000 messages. IMAP (which is good in concept) is still not the easiest to use when you have a lot of messages. - Jauder Ho
Have switched permanently to gmail. I'm using it's keyboard shortcuts and the extension GTDinbox for workflow etc. - David Smith
Loice: Advice - Put auto-responders with advice on how to get your attention for important messages (great subject liners). Don't respond to those that do now follow your rules ;) delete the rest ! - net
ARGH!!! Twhirl ate my comment. AGAIN! It has a really disconcerting way of discarding everything when a new post/comment comes in. One email trick that I have found useful is to aggressively filter incoming mail. Makes it easier to mark all as read without worrying about missing an important email. It would be great if there was a Bayesian filter creator that learns filtering based on communications patterns. Maybe Xobni... - Jauder Ho
Why not just use the web interface? Works really well for me - Benjamin Golub
Loïc, imagine if you were famous you'd get even more emails! Je rigoooole ;-P - JYS
@Benjamin that's what I ended up having to do. I prefer using a client as scrollback is easier. twhirl works well for twitter, just not so good for friendfeed. - Jauder Ho
mail.app is WAY better at spam catching than Google. I may move all my mail there instead of the web app. - Cyndy
@Cyndy: really? For me it's the opposite. Gmail's spam filter is almost perfect while Mail.app fails to catch about 5 spams a day, even after long training. - Ole Begemann
Jeez, Loic you have a long day ahead of you. - Andrew Dobrow
I'm back using the web over imap myself. gmail on the web is aces. - Jason Toney
Ole, today: mail.app caught 478 spam messages. 1 error, and it was an eBay phishing message. Two Gmail accounts: less than 50 spam caught, and at least 5 in each box I had to mark. - Cyndy
WHAAAAAAAA? 10603 e-mails? Select-All Delete. I wouldn't bother. - DAVE ID
How can you extract anything meaningful out of that many emails??? - Gerard van Schip
I've had it in Thunderbird via IMAP for months (Mail too, but I don't use it as often). Both are awesome! - TranceMist
Eh, a mere 10,609 emails. I have 51,708 emails in my Gmail and I can still find what I want in there. - Morton Fox
Anyone know how to make it so that more than 50 emails at a time appears on gmail? - Simon
nvm. just found it. too bad it only goes to 100. - Simon
wew can't believe I have so many comments here. Thanks. What's fun is that you don't agree at all between gmail web/ gmail with mailplane/ gmail with mail.app interesting... I have used Mailplane for months and I feel I go really faster with mail.app right now, will keep you posted. In any case, interesting that I get more comments on Friendfeed than my blog... thanks friends. Net, good suggestion! - Loic Le Meur
why the switch? Check out Xobni if organization is your problem. Its in closed beta (not hard to get a code) but I hear good things! - Zach Landes
Thanks for the post Louis! It has been an amazing 50 days since we launched on your site. These updates should help Toluu attract even more interesting people and feeds to the service, in turn making it more useful for everyone using it. - Caleb Elston
Jonathan, if you leave a comment on Louis' post he can get you one right away. - Caleb Elston
Nice. If you don't see the new UI on your iPhone, scroll to the bottom and click on 'Mobile'. The old UI is now oddly referred to as 'Classic' (not-mobile?) - Kevin Fox
funny that its 'new' but doesn't have the new share with notes feature. Looks great though. Just slightly slower, but I'm on edge right now, not wifi. - Vince DeGeorge
vince I am seeing the notes feature on the main screen -- also running quite a bit faster for me (but on WiFi) - MG Siegler
I can go to the things I've shared and see the notes, I just can't add new items. Ha, between the new reader and FF, I've used 75% of my battery at the airport. - Vince DeGeorge
I'd use it as my desktop browser version if it had j and k built in. - Jordan Hofker
Cool but it should be possible to bookmark a particular folder for direct access - Nico Steegmann
@Nico ; actually you can from a full browser but not from mobilesafari - Jonathan Belgourari
@Nico and @Jonathan The current version of Mobile Safari is not great about URLs and history handling (which gets you bookmarking). Things seem to be better with the iPhone SDK simulator, so hopefully with the 2.0 firmware release this summer things will be better everywhere. - Mihai Parparita
