Wait, Herbert Hoover gave his endorsement already? Who'd he pick? - Vincent Ferrari
Was Hoover actually the worst, or did he mainly have bad timing? I don't recall that he started any big wars anything like that. - Paul Buchheit

ok, this is just awesome! +1 - tagami
This is really cool... One thing though, the reason I gravitate towards coffee shops that have latte art is that there is a high correlation between latte-art and good coffee... Now with these machines, it might no longer be the case :( - Bindu Reddy

This site, http://tinyurl.com/5nbo6y , had an interesting related theory: "'Actual' is a Marine usage, and 'Army folks normally use "6" for the same purpose'. So, is 'Number 6' more than just a lovely name to the robotic ear, but perhaps more of a title than a name?" - Laurence Gonsalves

The onion conundrum: no futures market, high volatility - Jun. 27, 2008
July 9 at 9:00 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"The bulbous root is the only commodity for which futures trading is banned. Back in 1958, onion growers convinced themselves that futures traders (and not the new farms sprouting up in Wisconsin) were responsible for falling onion prices, so they lobbied an up-and-coming Michigan Congressman named Gerald Ford to push through a law banning all futures trading in onions. The law still stands. And yet even with no traders to blame, the volatility in onion prices makes the swings in oil and corn look tame, reinforcing academics' belief that futures trading diminishes extreme price swings. Since 2006, oil prices have risen 100%, and corn is up 300%. But onion prices soared 400% between October 2006 and April 2007, when weather reduced crops, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, only to crash 96% by March 2008 on overproduction and then rebound 300% by this past April. The volatility has been so extreme that the son of one of the original onion growers who lobbied Congress for the trading ban now " - Paul Buchheit via Bookmarklet
Banning all futures trading seems silly, but having transparency about what institutions are buying commodity futures seems like a good thing to me. - Chris White

ABC News has confirmed that authorities are in the process of recovering Nina Reiser's remains from Redwood Regional Park, east of Skyline Boulevard. The body was found in a bag, buried deep in a ravine. The bag was well concealed and could have been easily overlooked. Authorities had a forensic anthropologist on scene to help recover the body. - bob via Bookmarklet
Sources tell ABC News that a deal was struck with Reiser that would reduce his conviction from first-degree murder to second-degree murder. The lesser charge means Reiser could receive a sentence of 15 years to life, instead of the previous 25 years to life. - bob
aha, so he did do it. - j1m
I don't understand why the DA's office would agree to giving him a deal; he was already convicted of first degree. - Tudor Bosman
