"I like the notion of using arrays to hold collections (efficiency (really cool paper), ease of access), but how do you incrementally migrate a collection from one array to another without blocking? By it's nature, you can't atomically update the entire array at one go. By the nature of concurrency, there can always be a 'late arriving writer' who wants to update the old array and isn't aware that a migration is in progress. If you let the writer's write proceed, you risk losing his update (classic hard problem in non-blocking algorithms: dropped update during a 'resize'). How do you get the late-writer's attention that something is going on, when (pretty much by definition) checking an unrelated volatile flag can't do the job?" - Jim Norris via Bookmarklet

"Given a (nondecreasing) monotone sequence x0, x1,… , xn − 1 of natural numbers smaller than u, the Elias–Fano representation makes it possible to store it using at most 2 + log(u/n) bits per element, which is very close to the information-theoretical lower bound ≈ log e + log(u/n). A typical example is a list of pointer into records of a large file: instead of using, for each pointer, a number of bit sufficient to express the length of the file, the Elias–Fano representation makes it possible to use, for each pointer, a number of bits roughly equal to the logarithm of the average length of a record." - Jim Norris via Bookmarklet

"Sometimes it is usefull if we can capture the state of the application, its stack of function calls, which includes local variables, the global variables and the program counter, and save them into an object. If this object would give us the ability to restart the processing from the point stored in it. A continuation is exactly the type of object that we need. Think of a continuation as an object that, for a given point in your program, contains a snapshot of the stack trace, including all the local variables, and the program counter. You can not only store these things in the continuation object, but also restore the execution of the program from a continuation object. This means that the stack trace and the program counter of the running program become the ones stored in a continuation." - Jim Norris via Bookmarklet

Dude! 2030?!?!?!?!? - Jini
@Jini: 2020. The system should be in service in 2020, and become "commercially self-sustainable" in 2030, when it would cross 100M passengers/year. From the text of proposition 1 (which you should vote for in November): "At a minimum, the entire 700-mile system described in the High-Speed Rail Authority’s Business Plan should be constructed and in revenue service by 2020." See http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/... - Tudor Bosman
Construction should start in 2010, and 10 years to build a California-wide train system is a long time, but not unreasonable. Of course, judging by how long it took for BART service to be extended to the San Francisco airport after the project was approved, I'd say 2050 is a more realistic opening date... - Tudor Bosman

Increasingly, I find myself in conflict with Paul Krugman's positions. - Chris White
What in particular do you disagree with? That Fannie/Freddie can't be allowed to fail? - Jim Norris
In this case, I disagree that Fannie/Freddie aren't partially responsible for this mess, as well as how the inevitable answer for problems in the economy is taxpayers bailing out governmental and institutional mistakes. Clearly a bunch of people made money off the whole real estate bubble since 1998, including people associated with Fannie/Freddie. Why don't they pay for this? - Chris White
Well, you'd have to decide how that was gonna work, exactly. - j1m
Maybe it's better to let them fail. Mortgages will be harder to get, so houses will be harder to sell. In order to sell the houses, prices will have to be lowered. That's the natural way to get housing prices back to what they should be. Right now it makes more sense to rent than to own in many markets. Low interest rates and poor lending practices caused housing prices to drastically inflate like a dotcom stock. How will prices get back to what they should be under the bailout plan? - Chris White
Going forward, there should be no more interest-only loans, and 20% down should be required, along with verified earnings and/or proof of collateral. Second homes should probably require even more down, without the ability to walk away freely from a foreclosure without owing anything. - Chris White

Income Gap and Marginal Tax Rate 1917-2006 at Visualizing Economics
July 13 at 9:01 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
From the Nation. The top graph shows the average income of the top o.o1% compared to the bottom 90%. The higher the peak the bigger the gap between the two groups. In 2006 you would need an income of over $10 million to make it into the top 0.01% while your income would have to be less than $100,000 to be in the bottom 90. The second graph shows the marginal tax rate over the same time period. - grant via Bookmarklet
the startling detail to me is that the last time there was a period of low income tax on the rich it was followed by a depression; that's not to say that that could happen this time around, but I always hold onto the belief that everything reverts to the mean and when stuff gets out of wack, it finds a way to get fixed. - grant
But what would Ludwig von Mises say? - Jim Norris
free markets is one thing, misrepresented taxation another. - grant
The unstated goal behind the “income gap” presentations seems to be to bring down the rich, instead of bringing up the poor. Both bridge the gap, but they don't lead to equivalent worlds. - Amit Patel
Amit, how do you bring up the poor without raising taxes? - Jason Wehmhoener
I think education could go a long way, but maybe I'm too optimistic. Teaching people to save, to not go to the mall when they're bored, to avoid fast food, to drink water instead of soda, to drive less, to not “buy as much house as you can afford”, to stop giving money to DeBeers. I don't see taxes as much of a solution. - Amit Patel
I'm a believer in safety nets. Health care is a big one. - Jason Wehmhoener

Are people really surprised by this? It seemed obvious, IMHO. - Steve Lynch via Alert Thingy
This is interesting from both sides. The average income of the top 0.01 percent jumping over 5x from 1980 to 2006! But on the flip side in 1944 a top marginal rate of 94%, and paying uncle sam 65% of your total income! - Derek
Interesting that at the height of WWII an extreme progressive tax rate was acceptable as a wartime measure, but now that we're fighting another very expensive war the cost is much more distributed across all income levels. - Jason Wehmhoener

"Alarmed by the sharply eroding confidence in the nation’s two largest mortgage finance companies, the Bush administration on Sunday asked Congress to approve a sweeping rescue package that would give officials the power to inject billions of federal dollars into the beleaguered companies through investments and loans. In a separate announcement, the Federal Reserve said that it would make one of its short-term lending programs available to the two companies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The Fed said that it had made its decision “to promote the availability of home mortgage credit during a period of stress in financial markets.” - Jason Chen via Bookmarklet
In other words, they have a plan to use our taxpayer money and to print more money (thus devaluing the dollar) to help out lenders who gave money for houses that shouldn't have been bought at those prices. Nice. But the good part is, if you were good about saving, the prices will be kept artificially high, while the money you saved will be worth less. - Chris White
@Chris: The counter-argument (I assume) is that keeping the companies "on the hook" and letting insolvent lenders collapse might end up starving the economy, reducing tax revenue and devaluing the dollar just as much if not more. There's a serious moral hazard here, but that doesn't prove that bailouts are a bad idea: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/5ffd... - Jim Norris
