A relative bought a printer/copier for $49. The guy in the shop said "you don't buy new ink cartridges, you just get a new one". Geez, no wonder the environment is fucked.
Urgh, he really had the gumption to admit that? I know the printer supplies model is profitable, but I wouldn't expect them to encourage folks to toss their otherwise usable printers away for the sake of "cheaper" consumables... - Tyson Key
I've been using the same $30 canon inkjet printer for 3 years now. Prints decent, even has a card reader built in. The cartridges are expensive though. - Phil Glockner
I haven't printed much in ages, only stuff I HAVE to have a hard copy of, usually financial/tax docs etc. - jjprojects
I still have a HP all-in-one printer (an OfficeJet G95) that I purchased a few years ago, that's chugging away without that many problems (other than a few of the plastic paper tray tabs being broken, and the fact that paper jams occur more often than they did when it was new). Given that it Just Works(TM) under the Linux distributions that I use, and I can cheaply purchase ink for it, I doubt I'll be buying another printer any time soon. - Tyson Key
my office went through 25 boxes a paper a week back prior to November - Jeff Quinton
I work in a cartridge refilling shop. We hear stories like this daily. It's environmentally irresponsible. Our city doesn't even have a recycling plan for printers. And retailers do push printers in this way. - Jack&Cleo
My last printer a couple of years back was the same thing (I since went a proper all in one). $49 or $59 ..cheaper than the catrigages, so every time we needed a refill we purchased a new printer, I ended up throwing out 5 of them. - Duncan Riley
Heh, same deal here jjprojects, I don't think I've powered the printer on for over a year, except to briefly photocopy about 3 documents for someone. - Tyson Key
We have 4 (yes FOUR) printers in our house... 1 has a paper jam that I can't get fixed... I will have to take it to a service center and I have been procrastinating. The other 3 are out of ink... So NONE of them work. I bought new ink for 2 of them but it's the wrong size (I got the XL size at Costco and it's too big :( can't return because the package is opened). I think we got at least one of the printers because it was cheaper to buy a new printer than re-ink the old one. - Lindsay
I use my printer occasionally for school stuff. A Canon IP3000 and I think it's fantastic, I use calidad ink cartridges which are about $11 for black and $25 for 3 colours - Bryce Roney
If it's cheaper to buy a new printer rather than new cartridges, why wouldn't you buy a new printer?? I would. The price of ink is ridiculous. - Robert DeBord
Hmm, as for why you wouldn't just buy an entire printer when your existing one runs out of ink/toner - it's not exactly practical, since you'd spend more time reconfiguring new printers, finding places to store the existing ones until you decide to dispose of them, and throwing out even more packaging (or going through the motions of recycling the stuff) than you would for a pack of ink cartridges... - Tyson Key
