Our engineering group tries to normalize the process as much as possible via review meetings etc. When I (in marketing) ask for an estimate, I can only receive it from a single source - not the engineer doing the estimating. Sure, we have lots of cross-checking, etc. in place, just not here in the 'Lab and not on some other projects I've managed. It's really tough to do good estimation for s/w projects. I find it helps to work with the same team though to get an idea of how they estimate. - Jake Kuramoto
