new language from Bell Labs and Unix central figures Rob Pike and Ken Thompson, who now work at Google. Bits of C, bits of Google, it compiles to native binaries and runs nearly as fast as C. Built with concurrency and memory management as central figures. Not used in production at Google yet, but grew from a 20% project to something worthy of public release.

Apple’s official project to port ZFS to Mac OS X has been canned: The ZFS project has been discontinued. The mailing list and repository will also be removed shortly. The writing’s been on the wall for this ever since 10.6 shipped with less support for ZFS than 10.5. There was unofficial “kinda sorta works” support for ZFS in 10.5, but none in 10.6. Word on the street in Cupertino is that dropping ZFS wasn’t an engineering decision, but a legal one, and it might have had something to do with Oracle’s acquisition of Sun. I don’t know if it was a problem with the terms of the CDDL license, general distrust/dislike for Oracle, or what — only that the word came down from legal that ZFS was a no-go. Update: Perhaps it was the NetApp patent lawsuit against ZFS.

There's a dark stair well i traverse every night to get to my apartment. I modified a cheap tap-light to be [Tap-> stay on for 40 seconds, then shut off]. The mod takes all of 10 minutes to do, and is really useful if you don't want to go back and shut it off. And its 4 components. This is basic electronics, no arduino/ microcontroller / 555. (no standby power usage either)

If you’ve ever ridden latest iteration of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland, you will remember how, right before you hit the first drop, you are greeted with the ghostly image of the tentacle-faced Davey Jones creature warning you that “dead men tell no tales”. I certainly did. The effect uses rear-projection video, shined onto a screen of water vapor created by ultasonic atomization, that is sandwiched between 2 laminar airflows, which keep the sheet of fog contained. The commercial Fog Screen that spits out this screen costs tens of thousands of dollars for the small one. fog screen I attempted to create my own cheap version of this system using a wooden box, a window fan, some drinking straws, and a cheap fog machine. I almost succeeded.

Think you’re a rock-star with mushy, vaguely head-shaped vegetables and a knife? Think again – these pumpkin carvings will blow your mind. (I was going to call this post “The Great Cutter Roundup”, but I was afraid it would draw a bunch of emo gloom-cookies.

We started this build with locally purchased materials. Cost of materials: $15 for 15 Fence Pickets $5 for drywall screws $4 for wood glue $24 Total Cost We used fifteen 1" x 6" x 6' pressure treated pine dog ear fence pickets from the local home improvement store. While the nominal size of the lumber was 1" x 6" the actual size was 5/8" x 5-1/2" x 72". We also purchased two packages of drywall screws in both 1 inch and 1-1/4 inch lengths. Since the pine is a soft wood, the drywall screws tended to countersink themselves. So the 1" screws generally worked fine in holding two 5/8" boards together.
