This is a dollar bill taped to the floor of FriendFeed's headquarters. It's a bit of social engineering. They figured out it kept people from tripping on the cord cover because people noticed the money on the floor.
- Robert Scoble
The dollar bill trick doesn’t work with strippers though ;)
- Tony C
@Earl: Consider it a stripper-filter, then. You know someone's a stripper if they trip over it.
- April Buchheit
for some reason i expect a "stripper filter" to be something coded using regular expressions. sad, i know.
- Karim
The message here is that Web 2.0 companies are so ignorant of money and revenue that they even step over a dollar on the floor
- Jason Carreira

Interesting. The photo has been viewed more than 500 times, but has only earned 62 likes and 19 comments. So, for every 1 thing we can see here there's another 9 people hanging out lurking in the shadows.
- Robert Scoble
@Scoble the old 90-9-1 rule :) (well almost)
- Naor Mark
You could always just superglue some road kill to those things. Nothing gets people's attention more than a dead opossum.
- Andrew Leyden
Heath And Safety in the UK would not approve....but I do!
- Toby Graham
"but has only earned 62 likes". This currently stands as the most-liked Flickr photo of all time.
- Raphael, Raphael
I forgot about that photo. It does work, though. Everytime I visit friendfeed's offices I see the dollar and I'm careful not to trip over it. :-)
- Robert Scoble
That's dumb. Why couldn't they afford to run the cord somewhere where it wouldn't be in the way in the first place?
- Robert Peña
As an IE I can state that's definitely not something to publicize. Definitely not OSHA Kosher.
- Adi
Reminds me of the deli counter in grocery store in Scotts Valley across the street from NorCal offices of MetaCreations (the Fractal Design arm of it). Local companies'd go there for lunch daily. PROBLEM: Deli counter pencils (for marking your sandwich menu) disappeared at frightful rate. SOLUTION: Deli affixed pencils with price label. Price: $100.00. Pencils stayed at store. :)
- Susan A. Kitchens
Haha I like that trick for keeping Pens from going missing Susan!
- Garin Kilpatrick
Hell no. FB just doesn't have the functionality.
- Neal Jansons
for a lot people FB is FF :-) (and more)
- Luca Conti
On functionality then friendfeed would be just a temporary step to get your ff over to facebook. I.e. Render FF stream in Facebook stream.
- Andrew Baron
Not feeling it. FB feels heavy. FF feels lightweight.
- Nick Reynolds
FB is very closed and demands too much. FF is very open and demands little.
- LogEx
I do pipe my FF stream to FB, but still live here. More interaction, etc.
- Neal Jansons
FB? Heck no! I hate being restricted to interacting with people that I might already know. I like the fact that I can meet new people on FF that I might never have otherwise encountered.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Heck no! Two totally separate things to me.
- Rochelle
Who cares. Not a single person on my FF is my friend on FB. You guys are not 'real friends' but I do enjoy your company.
- Aaron deMello
No, I think it's simply an different opportunity...it's all about usage.
- Enriqueta
@Aaron People use things differently. My online, professional, and personal lives all overlap, so many of my friends are on multiple services.
- Neal Jansons
i use friendfeed for following news and links. I use facebook to see what my friends are doing. I don't see how facebook could replace what friendfeed offers me.
- Alex Williams
Well even for me FF is a more active community, but I wonder if that will change? FB is picking up a lot of momentum it seems with the people I know and FF seems to be somewhat stable in growth. I thought FF would of picked up more steam by now myself.
- Andrew Baron
FF is the place for me. Fb is where most of my immediate family communicates and that's fine. FF is where i get to expand my community; challenge my thinking; and learn new things. and that's fine, too.
- MikeAmundsen
@Andrew It's always this way for early adoption. Twitter is just starting to get real mainstream adoption...my sister-in-law brought it up at Thanksgiving and I knew Twitter was now going to become normal, so FF will come next.
- Neal Jansons
Andrew do they have an API like FriendFeed?
- Dave Winer
There is no possible way Facebook can replace FriendFeed. The primary reason for this is that they are two different things. For instance, you don't even have a profile page here on FriendFeed and on Facebook, you can only "follow" people who let you. I don't even think you can interact with people outside of your circle. I would also agree that FB is a little too heavy and complicated for what I do here on FF.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Andrew: FB is a different animal. It has 500+ employees. FF has, what, 13? FB has 120+ million users. FF has a few hundred thousand. But, the quality of conversations is much better here and there are no walls to this garden (Google can search it) and there are no stupid rules and no arbitrary limits to how many friends you can have. But, you will find me in both places.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert and @Dave I agree on the shortcomings of FB. Though FB seems to be evolving. The biggest difference for me, is the subject matter of the posts - they are much more newsworthy here as @alex stated. FB is much more social talk. But that has been changing; The FB iphone app separates out the personal from the news and more and more people seem to be posting news links.
- Andrew Baron
I never could find a need for FB - barely ever check in
- BEX
Andrew: wait until you see the video we shot last week at Facebook. I agree that Facebook is interesting again. But NOT as a competitor to FriendFeed. Zuckerberg has other things in his sights.
- Robert Scoble
I totally disagree. Facebook is ok for some things, but it cannot touch FF.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
While I admit that my usage on Facebook has increased heavily recently, I think of Facebook as a tool for a more personal relationship, but there is little way of gaining new friends. With FriendFeed, it is easy to find new people with interests and hold discussions. I think as long as FriendFeed can excel in providing discussion, it will be hard to have an equal.
- James Mowery
from twhirl
I'm finding myself using Facebook way less. I let the FF app insert everything into my wall and just use it to present that stuff to my friends that aren't on FF.
- matthew john ernisse
I definitely feel it. But only because I feel bombarded with information, it's coming from all around me, and FriendFeed is just not that useful to me. It's cool, but why bother with it when I can talk to my friends on Facebook? None of my friends are on FriendFeed. Really other than people into this stuff, who has time for FF?
- Josue Salazar
Andrew, I am just the opposite -- I believe the FriendFeed is replacing the need for Facebook and FF is not draconian like Fb.
- Robert Miller
I have to agree worryingly...............................
- Yatin Vadhia
the reason i use friendfeed is so i can update facebook with all i do without having to go to it every day...
- Samuel Lewis
from twhirl
I don't see them as the same thing at all. I've got to keep up both since I have different types of friends on both services and overall both serve different types of needs. My friends from high school don't use the Internet in the same way that the folks over here on FF do.
- Lynne d Johnson
Nope. I was just thinking last night how Facebook feels kind of sterile and borring to me, while Friendfeed is friendly, easy, and engaging. I go to Facebook a few times a week out of a sense of obligation, but I can never think of anything to do there.
- Laura Norvig
No - Facebook has been wasting my time. Sterile and ZERO interaction! I should be evangelizing Friendfeed.
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
i think you're right... i'm finding as many comments to twitter reposts on Facebook as on Friendfeed. Folks are spending a LOT more time in Facebook thanks to the comment thread feature they riffed off of FF.
- Jason Calacanis
Nah. Real-time there is no good. To me it is just a robust contacts list. I like Facebook a lot but it will not be a replacement for me.
- Rolf Schewe
FB is just starting to have more user interaction with regard to comments... YES, FB is gaining steam, but it will be a LONG time before it replaces need for FriendFeed! FB is too limiting / locked down; whereas, FF is more open and easier to collaborate / open
- Susan Beebe
friendfeed has a better feature set for discussion on activity, but for now Facebook has the users. I find I spend much more time on Facebook because most of my contacts use it, only a few people I know in real life use FF now. How do you get people other than early adopters to start using a new service?
- Mike English
There was news last week regarding Twitter possibly turning down around half a billion dollars from Facebook (though granted, mostly stock). Can you imagine what that would be like if Facebook bought Twitter? I can't say for sure that it would be a bad thing. If FB allowed Twitter to use the API's etc. Maybe FB could buy FF. http://tinyurl.com/5r5zxg
- Andrew Baron
I recently discovered FriendFeed, and like it a lot. I use it in conjunction with Facebook, but I can't imagine FB replacing the need for FF. If anything, I think that FF will grow as more people get on board.
- Joseph Grabowski
Don't worry. Us diehards are here for life :)
- Charlie Anzman
FF allows you to comment and interact with ppl outside your network, which is cool.
- Sahil Parikh
no, it's just you. Friendfeed rules
- David Jacobs
No way. Facebook does have the Import capability to an extent, but the people who understand the coolness of what you post are on FriendFeed.
- Shevonne
Facebook replacing FriendFeed? Wha? Nah
- Kol Tregaskes
My Facebook, FrendFeed and Twitter networks are all somewhat different.
- Mike Reynolds
I informed my friends and deleted my fb account when I noticed how it should be.

Another example of why cats are not as cool as dogs. A dog would have peed on the notebook, rendering it completely useless and thereby removing any worry you might have about the keystroke combinations that your cat is throwing together.
- Morgan Haley
ROFL. Note to self: Kitties are not easier than kids. I used to leave my laptop open, but when I'd check twitter or plurk, I'd see that one of my kids has been typing away. So, my streams would be filled with 'hhhhhhhreirennnnnnnn' or just one letter. Or even worse when my daughter would type her name and send over and over.
- Admiral Anika
You should try having a cat that wakes you up by digging into boxes and taking out the packaging peanuts. My cat does that every morning, and no matter how well I try to hide boxes, the cat will just go at it. Drives me crazy. :P
- James Mowery

I agree Mona. Basic manners are so important. Everyone should treat the people around them with respect. Also good? A smile. It's amazing how a smile can change your day.
- Ladybug Heather
Mannerless dates are deal beakers for me. I once left in the middle of dinner because the guy was SUCH a jerk to people.
- Mona Nomura
Yeah, that lack of manners shows a fundamental lack of respect for people - and if you stuck with him, he'd eventually show you the same lack of respect. That one is a dealbreaker for me. I want to see you treating EVERYone respectfully, including bus drivers, garbage collectors, and administrative assistants.
- Ladybug Heather
I have heard that you can tell how your date would treat you in a relationship by the way he treats the wait-staff at dinner, so pay attention to that!
- Fa La La La Lindsay
agreed Mona...manners, especially on the internet, are sorely lacking...

I'm with you Mona. It's really annoying when someone doesn't thank you when they should. Happens too many times to me, not good. :-( It's 1 or 2 words ("thank you" or "thanks"), how hard can it be?

Thank you Mona. And thank you everyone, ad infinitum.

Manners are the glue that hold society together. The only things I really insist my daughter says are please, thank you and you're welcome. Using these make things better in every way
- Morgan Haley
Its odd, but in my experience, I find that teenagers, mainly the boys, are more respectful than their opposite sex counterparts. I wonder why...*makes a muscle*
- Terence
an extra little observation.. You're standing at the side of a busy road and wish to cross - there are no lights nor a zebra crossing, which gender is the most likely to stop for you? I've noticed it is primarily male.
- alphaxion
Terence, I have found the same to be true. I'm only 21, but it is amazing how guys show more respect than women at times. I figured it would be the other way around.
- James Mowery
from twhirl
alphaxion, i'd agree. i often feel like i'm the only female who stops for pedestrians. i've been hit by cars 13 times. all of them by females only 2 expresses remorse. everyone else yelled at me for walking on the sidewalk.
- Admiral Anika
Here, here! And it's even more important to mind manners when you think nobody is watching. Someone usually is and even if they aren't... good manners is a good habit IMO.
- Kevin C. Tofel
Know what ticks me off? I have taught my children to say ma'am and sir. Do NOT tell my kids not to use those terms of respect. You are their elder, deal with it.
- Heather Solos
Me too, Heather. And mine address all adults with an honorific. Friends of the family are Ms. Mona or Mr. Mark, if they aren't Aunt Lisa or Uncle Bart. And I still ma'am and sir everyone. It's habit, and I smile, and I think it's a GOOD habit.
- Ladybug Heather
People are just generally rude anymore!
- orionstarr
manners for me are so crucial that i might stereotype a person right then and there when I meet him/her after seing signs of exceeding/missing manners.
- Hayk H.
heather & ladybug heather - agree with you on the ma'am and sir issue. being raised with these being required has paid off for me in my personal and professional life.
- Morgan Haley
I was brought up with "it's nana not [insert name]" and even now, a person hurtling towards 30, I still find it unsettling when people will simply talk to their relatives by firstname only. Just seems kinda wrong.
- alphaxion
I can't stand when you walk by someone say "Hi" and they just ignore you....
- orionstarr
in my husbands family the culture is; if you say please or thank you, you are being too formal and rude. took me a while to get used to.
- InPerpetualMotion(Gina k)
American culture is so big on please/thank yous, in other countries its just a smile or ok, for thank you. American culture thank you example is like in "Few good men", where col gives his speech in the court.
- imran
And i'm not sure I like it, still. The ma'am thing can be taken two ways, so i prefer to use mz. But Sir is a given. I say thank you for just about everything, but i also make sure to make eye contact to make sure people know i mean it.
- InPerpetualMotion(Gina k)
When I had a baby, and went out alone with him as a newborn, I quickly learned that there is a ridiculously large amount of rude people out there. I would walk up to a crosswalk at a busy store parking lot, holding a baby carrier in the rain, and no one would stop to let me cross. And this stuff went on all the time. It's so depressing to me. I make it a point now to help out any mom in distress.

Just came from a brand new McDonalds that had trash cans that say "Thank You" when you throw trash away. I guess they're doing this in case the employees forget to say thanks.

Wikipedia: "On November 17, 2008, it was announced that the SEC charged Mark Cuban with insider trading in the shares of Mamma.com. A stock dilution occured shortly after the trade, which gave off red flags of inside knowledge at the time of the trade. As Martha Stewart discovered, the U.S. Goverment will aggressively pursue such cases against high-profile individuals as a part of its broader enforcement efforts."

I wondered if his sharesleuth business wouldn't at some point come under insider trading. This doesn't have to do with that though.

Well, Martha went to jail for lying about it. If she had fessed up and taken the fine, it would have blown over. Cuban, take note: it's not the crime, it's the cover up.

probably a blackberry. Why you sticking or need to stick with Sprint?
- Justin Korn
Sticking with Sprint because of the service in my area. With my wife traveling around West Texas she doesn't lose service. I have many colleagues and friends with every other service available and none are as reliable. I'd kill for an iPhone or a G1 but neither option is available.
- Damien Franco
I empathize, Damien. I was stuck with Sprint for years. Great data speed but I do not miss the rest of it.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I have the HTC Mogul. I wish the camera took better pictures, and the memory issues can be annoying; otheriwse, I'd love it. As it is, I'm still quite dependent on it and don't want to go anywhere without it. The problem with taking my opinion into account is that I don't like Blackberries; I'd rather have a dodgy WinMo phone than the most reliable BB. I'm waiting impatiently for the Touch Pro, though.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Akiva, the real problem is that I live in such a rural area that won't get 3G service anytime soon. ATT has dead spots all over the place, including a really long section of between Midland and Lubbock (where the in-laws live). T-Mobile is just as bad, if not worse! Totally sucks here.

Sprint's been mostly good to me, thank goodness. Not to mention I get a discount on my plan because of my employer. My co-worker was told by an AT&T rep that there will be no discount for iPhone plans. They also won't allow you to buy insurance for the fragile device; HTCs are made of sterner stuff, but I still needed my insurance eleven months ago. AT&T? Not for me.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I'm here for another 2-3 years minimum. The wife is finishing college (2 1/2 years). I just want to be able to interact with friendfeed, twitter, maybe sync my iTunes, browse the web, make posts to my blogs, etc... while I'm stuck at work with computers that block those services. Is that too much to ask?
- Damien Franco
I just slipped my deactivated iPhone back in it's protective case. I needed that reminder. If you want to sync iTunes, that's gonna be an iPhone on AT&T. Dunno what Blackberries do, but WinMo phones sync with Media Player.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I've never really liked the BlackBerry. Haven't really given it a real chance though, so I guess I could test drive one for a month? Looking into the HTC Mogul right now.
- Damien Franco
cool, thanks everyone. I think I've narrowed it down to the HTC TouchPRO and the BlackBerry Curve. I'll head to the Sprint store and play with both of them in-store. Maybe they'll let me try one of them out for a month.
- Damien Franco
Are you looking for WinMo phone? I traded in my PPC6700 for an Instinct and love it. It was a serious upgrade.
- Admiral Anika
The last time I looked, the Touch PRO wasn't listed at Sprint. Coolness. I've got to see if I can convince them I need this at the lowest price in order for me to get back into a contract. [edit: On second thought, maybe I'll wait for the new IE.]

RSS subscribers are good for one or two things. Assuming that they don't visit your blog, then it is only one reason. It is a nice statistic to flaunt to advertisers. mattie... it makes complete sense. a corporation addressing the threat of a much smaller competitor only gives the smaller competitor clout. it's a terrible marketing move.
- Joshua Schnell
mattie... explain to me how these kiosks will increase market share, or was even a smart marketing move?
- Joshua Schnell
Yea, a smaller company that's making billions and taking market share from your company as well as tarnishing your company's image with half-truths? Yea, it's TOTALLY terrible marketing to attempt to reclaim your company's image and try new and experimental styles of marketing that haven't been completely proven as effective for ANY company, let alone your own. That doesn't show a willingness to change, grow or evolve your company. It's just bad marketing.
- Mattie Kenny
Not everyone who walks around a mall or past an Apple store is a) going to enter it and b) owns a Mac. These kiosks are being installed in MALLS outside of Apple stores. It's a great marketing move because it makes people remember an alternative and chuckle because of the placement. If Microsoft had stores and Apple put a kiosk out in front of them, you'd totally be supporting it and talking about how clever Apple was being. But since it's the other way around it's stupid. There's no integrity there.
- Mattie Kenny
you don't change, grow , or evolve your company by shedding light on a competitor that's behind you in the standings. What you end up doing is legitimate their claims as being a "real" competitor. it reeks of desperation.
- Joshua Schnell
I just obligatory 'like'd this because you IMd me. Only for you, Josh. HA
- Mona Nomura
Microsoft has been ignoring Apple for the past decade. Apple has been gaining market share. It's not desperation. It's aggressive marketing that isn't offensive toward the other company. It's playful but respectful. Microsoft has yet to say anything negative about Apple in their ad campaign. They haven't even MENTIONED Apple. It's about their product. Recognizing that another company is competition isn't desperate, it's realistic. Apple has been throwing volley after volley at Microsoft, while Microsoft
- Mattie Kenny
pretended as though the company didn't exist. This has been happening for YEARS now. Microsoft is finally realizing that you can't just let a company that although has a lesser market share has very high visibility to just continue to pound you in marketing without doing anything. Microsoft is attempting to reclaim their brand.
- Mattie Kenny
It'd work for apple because they aren't #1.... that's why it would have been smarter for them. It's got nothing to do with integrity. It has to do with smart business moves.
- Joshua Schnell
I said being a fanboy lacks integrity, not Apple or Microsoft. You cease to be a reliable and knowledgeable resource but rather a one-sided broadcaster. There's no critical eye to fanaticism. Everything is fine. Nothing is broken. There needs to be a certain amount of decorum and journalistic integrity if you want to be a destination for any sort of news. If I went to an Obama site, I'd expect ACCURATE portrayal of McCain. Same if I went to a McCain site. In fact, that very complaint has been made against
- Mattie Kenny
McCain's portrayal of Obama in the public. It lacks integrity.
- Mattie Kenny
I can post a whole bunch more articles where i ripped on apple if you'd like.
- Joshua Schnell
I was referring to that article which isn't written with a critical eye and reflects poorly on your website. It's written squarely from the point of view of a "fanboy". It makes the website lose it's "expert" edge. The tone of the writing is obnoxious and baiting. Doesn't accurately portray the facts of the situation correctly. As though these kiosks would only be marketed to Apple fans. They're in freaking malls. All kinds congregate at malls.
- Mattie Kenny
Actually, I like that site because it's NOT a fanboy site, it's just a casual site written by Mac users, but I certainly never expect to get any info about Windows apps there.
- Trish R
Dude, Mattie. In my first article on Macgasm I cast myself as being from the "deep red-pry-my-mac-from-my-cold-dead-hands end of the mac freak spectrum". It was -- mostly -- humorous and taken as such by most. Deep breath. Seriously. Chant your soothing zen phrase "omni-pad-me-jobs-Ohmmmmm"
- Brad McCrorey
True, Brad. Some of the best writers are able to poke fun at themselves while still making a point. No one should ever take themselves that seriously.
- Trish R
I won't argue you associating me with "some of the best writers", Trish ;)
- Brad McCrorey

- Brad McCrorey
I don't pay anything for music currently.
- Morton Fox
Yes, I actually already do. I've been an eMusic subscriber for about 9 years now. I pay $192 per year for 90 tracks per month. VBR MP3 and no DRM. Beats the crap out of iTunes any day. They don't usually have the latest pop music, but I'm not into that anyway. Have lots of vintage Rock, Jazz, Blues as well of tons of recent work from great artists than most people have not heard of as they are independant or signed with obscure labels off the main stream.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Examples of the great stuff I have collected from eMusic over the past couple of years. They posted the entire Credence Clearwater Revival, Elvis Costello and Frank Zappa catalogs took me many months to download everything I wanted/needed from those catalogs alone.

Don't know Modx (I'll check it right now), but my choice is Drupal. Being a small sw house, we use D as our main "framework" for content oriented sites. We like its flexilbility/modularity, BIG and ACTIVE community, and they don't know the meaning of the word "backward compatibility" :) Do not fear the change between one major release and the other.

Nuke & Drupal are both great. Stick with open source if you can. I have yet to use a commercial CMS that wasn't a gigantic pile of crap.
- Kevin D. White
We just switched to Drupal and love its flexibility. Before that, had a custom pile of crap.

I'm a big fan of Drupal. I deployed it for X PRIZE over a year ago and have fallen in love with its power, flexibility and fantastic community support. Being open source and free also made it attractive for X PRIZE which is a non-profit. Here's a presentation I created as a case study, which I can discuss with you further if interested Louis http://www.slideshare.net/krynsky...

I've had nothing but headaches with Drupal. I'd just as soon recommend Notepad for a CMS than Drupal.

Well, as someone who writes for CMSWire, I have been playing with plenty of Web CMSs. The answer is completely dependent on what you want to accomplish.

@chris really? I'd love to hear your issues in more detail. @James good point, the requirements will definitely make a difference and help guide a proper selection. Louis you can also view and test drive several CMS systems at http://www.opensourcecms.com

I think it probably depends on what you're going to use your CMS for... Is it for social networking or is it to be more of a broadcast/publishing outlet? I have actually been impressed with the simple functionality of Elgg recently. It's not fancy but it's a pretty good straightforward social network platform that has CMS modules. I used to be a fan of Dot Net Nuke but all the sites look the same to me, even with theming...

I would also note that there are some impressive PHP frameworks that I've been looking at over the past few weeks. CodeIgniter is one that I really like. Now, you still need to know PHP, but it is impressive how fast you can get something that is nearly as functional as a base version of WordPress running. However, even I don't have enough time to program my own content management solution.

Dot Net Nuke is what we use on the http://PMIRochester.org site and I like it...very easy for our board members to use (non computer geniuses)

A lot of people turn wordpress into a CMS which I think is a good idea. I've used expression engine, Joomla also.
- Wayne Sutton
Interwoven Teamsite and Stellent have excellent solutions for real biz.

@James Mowery i've made a new tool for building apps without "knowing PHP", I guess the best thing about it is the security model. There's a new novice-friendly tutorial at http://openappstore.com -- it's a little long but worth it ;)

Depends what the content is. If it's for web display only, Wordpress or Drupal. If it's for document or records management, Plone or Alfresco. Plone would actually be my first choice for both but that's just comfort level.
- Kevin Cearns
I am a hard core Drupal fan, they have a great community, and the system is beyond powerful it's AMAZING!! If you would like to chat more about Drupal don't hesitate to contact me. You can also follow me on Twitter

Check out Expression Engine for content mgmt.

I've used PHPNuke, PostNuke, and Joomla. Joomla seems to be the way to go for actual useful plugins.

Louis, I work with both EDM and CMS sites. I don't code, but I manage various aspects of these types of sites - so I judge them based upon both how flexible it is for a coder to deliver what I want and how easy it is for me to manage. I wouldn't consider WP a true CMS. It is solid for blogging, but very weak for total website+blog. Drupal is strong, check out the team I use at http://tributemedia.com. I have a friend that really likes Joomla. Past that, for intranet and mainstream biz - SharePoint.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
Drupal, especially the latest 5.12 or 6.5.
- Mo Kargas
Joomla is really messy from a UI standpoint and development can be a huge PIA. Drupal's admin UI for non-techies has it's challenges but it s a nice overall framework if you have a team/developer who know how to use it effectively. ExpressionEngine would be the best off-the-shelf solution for most "web sites" if you do not have the resources to build one for your needs. The best...

Let me add to the Drupal contingent... developed a number of sites using it, it's been solid and a pleasure to develop modules for

Louis, not sure how I missed this earlier, but the choice of CMS depends on purpose. For commercial purposes, Interwoven and Vignette are still fairly popular, Stellent has a good reputation as well. Some people have started to use Sharepoint for the same purpose as well. Obviously, most of the blog platforms fit the CMS bill as well.
- Rob Diana
Joomla is great for huge amounts of static content with dozens of categories inside separate sections, though its SEO and SEF engine are questionable, and the system itself requires some expertise. WordPress is a true blogging or news system that is amazingly flexible and robust but isn't suitable for large FAQ-type sites.
- Glenn Batuyong
One nice feature of Joomla is it has a separate admin UI. In drupal I added some code that cause the UI to fail so I couldn't correct the problem through the UI. It took me a very anxious hour to figure out what in the database I should delete to get it working again. Joomla keeps a separate admin UI so mistakes in the site UI can't make the site unmanageable.

My 30-second roundup: Drupal solid code base, good framework for custom modules but challenging to not look like every other Drupal site. Joomla: messy under the hood, but large ecosystem of templates/modules (though browser-specific bugs not uncommon in even commercial templates). MODX (worked w/ it 2 years ago) was early out the gate with AJAX, but rough around the edges at the time....
