"Think of the family-friendly policies Palin's example would seem to brush aside. No need for child care subsidies or universal preschool if a mother of five can run the state without a babysitter. Who really needs family leave laws that protect women's jobs if a governor can go back to work a few days after giving birth? And no need, it would seem, for employers to make any kind of concession to the complications that working parents bring with them to the workplace. Feminism, to the GOP, appears to mean never having to say you're exhausted." - Shellee via Bookmarklet
all i know is there i see obama coming out to "city of blinding light" and then i know that obama could have spent an hour saying nothing but "i want to be the prez" and you woulda loved it ;) - Rob Reed
I was in Texas when Ann Richards was Governor. Mrs. Palin, you are no Ann Richards. - Jason Carreira
Allow me to clarify. She strikes me as someone wearing a "tough chick" facade - hunter, fisher, lifelong NRA member, gov of a maverick, wild west type of state. Ann Richards was much much more than that of course. - Carla Thompson
Of course, those are the people who won the 2004 election for Dubya. - Jason Carreira
Yeah yeah, I know. But that combined with her pro-life stance would make me think - please GOD - that the pumas just couldn't pull that lever. - Carla Thompson
Thanks for the warning Jason, I won't bother to click...LOL - Ruth Ferguson
And Biden is pro-RIAA. They all have flaws. That's why we've got checks and balances. She doesn't make the law, Congress does. - Ben Parr
Oh Jason why'd you do that? I'm going to have to click. And it's going to make me nauseous. - Carla Thompson
Oh Jesus Mary. That's horrific. Don't go there, people. Do not click that link. - Carla Thompson
Just because a lot of people think something is a good idea, doesn't mean it is. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
If two thirds of America started sniffing glue, would you? I could go on and on. There's a reason why we don't elect the President based on a simple majority and why we have the checks and balances in place. The wants of the majority do not outweigh the needs of the minority. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
Sorry about the link... It's really sad. I think given that there are those crazies, it's doubly important to get Hillary out there for Obama and calling this Palin pick what it is: pandering. - Jason Carreira
A lot of people thought Bush would be an effective leader too. If we're going to establish America as a theocracy, then let's toss the Constitution and start from scratch. I'm sure Iran could give us some helpful pointers on how to get started. - Carla Thompson
My reason for posting the NY Times link was to point out that she is not out of step with the voting public. Though we might be. - Sprague D
well you know it says "broad is the path to destruction" - Ruth Ferguson
I have to know, what's on that link? - Kamilah Gill
Creationist == anti-science luddite. That seems to be a much bigger national security risk than just about anything I hear being pushed by the dems. - Tad - just Tad
that link wrecked my day - I hope Hillary voters will take the time to learn her positions and then fight like hell to stop her! - JMaultasch
@Kamilah, the link is to a Hillary Clinton forum. Her supporters - at least the ones on there - are elated with Palin. - Carla Thompson
@Kamilah it's the hillary clinton forums where the bitter dregs of her supporters are crowing about Palin and how the Democrats are really the sexist party. The good thing is that there's really not that many of them. The sad thing is that there are any. - Jason Carreira
vomit vomit vomit. thank you. that's making me cringe without even looking - Kamilah Gill
if the republicans win, i'm leaving the country. Tahiti, Australia, and Antartica are on the top of my list. any other suggestions? - Chris Hollander
wow... you guys at US, will you ever get out from that dirt of last 8 years? just... wow :-o - silpol
I've always wanted to live in Ireland. Australia's nice too, I hear. - Carla Thompson
No, if the Republicans win I'm asking THEM to leave. Politely, of course. - Rod Bauer via twhirl
OK, if no one on this thread believes in God, let me ask you, who do you credit for your very existence and the existence of everything around you? When you see a tree, do you think that it just came from it's tree parent and that's it? Who designed the tree in the first place? I think science and a belief in God go together just fine. My opinion. Oh, and it would be awesome if we could keep the discussion civil for everyone's benefit, of course. :) - Josh Haley
Let me ask you this: If you weren't here who would ask the question? Who was asking the question for the first 12 billion plus years? You start with a pre-defined end state and then wonder that it happened? Not very logical. - Jason Carreira
??? not being a creationist doesn't make you an atheist. I happen to *be* an atheist, but there are some people who are religious and yet accept that evolution happened - Kamilah Gill
This is so contrived on the part of the GOP - she's female, a kid going to iraq and a baby with downs. Way too stinky for me. - Cheryl Allin
I am religious and I accept that evolution does and did happen, just not to the scale that many people think. - Josh Haley
Josh: you can believe in God, heck you can be a Christian, and think Creationism is a hilariously awful worldview. Never mind scientific scrutiny, it doesn't hold up to theological or logical scrutiny. - Mark Trapp
Most Christians I know have no problem with evolution. I was brought up Christian and creationism was taught as a bible story, not as literal fact. - Tad - just Tad
A less than 6 month old baby with downs.. - Jason Carreira
Josh, but if God made Man, who made God? That argument is going nowhere. We're better off discussing the merits of the choices :-) - Sally Church
"not to the scale...". That doesn't make sense to me. but, ok. got too much other stuff to do - Kamilah Gill
one thing is for sure. Sarah Palin is no Hillary. Clinton is science-friendly - http://bit.ly/EtT3y - ~C4Chaos
@Kamillah - I understand if you don't wish to debate, but I will clarify: I do not believe that I am a descendant of what people would call apes. I believe that all animals and living things can mutate and evolve to adapt to their surroundings, sure. If you wear a pair of shoes that don't fit long enough, you develop callouses, for a very small example. Even as a Christian, who believes he is a child of God, I accept science enthusiastically. - Josh Haley
Josh: you're in good company. Scientists don't believe humans descended from apes, either, but that there is a common genetic ancestor between all primates. I guess if you have a misinformed view of evolution, it'd be pretty easy to discount it. - Mark Trapp
Josh, I don't really get your view of evolution as it relates to God's divine plan either: are you implying that God let evolution play out randomly in everything but humans? That's not exactly a Christian worldview: I don't know what that is. God doesn't leave things to chance: Christians who hold evolution to be fact still hold that God shapes evolutionary paths. - Mark Trapp
I think we're straying from the key point here though and that is that integrating a religious theory into public education goes against the basic tenets of America's founding. If we're going to do it, we should be ready and willing to, for example, begin teaching Islamic Sharia law in civics class or numerology alongside fractions. Well that last one's a bit of a stretch, but you get my point. - Carla Thompson
excellent point Carla, and it'd be a cold day in hell before most people in the US would be cool with Islamic teachings in schools, as much as some are clamoring for more "religion" (usually code for Christianity) in schools and society in general - Kamilah Gill
If McCain is trying to bait voters just because Palin is a woman, the GOP is dumber than I thought. HRC supporters who consider McCain will HATE her. Her policies and beliefs are the opposite of their own. - Glenn Batuyong via twhirl
From browsing through quite a few comments to political stories in MSM in the last few days, I'm convinced that most Hillary supporters are confusing a national election with American Idol. - Jody C
Actually I'm hearing the opposite from friends who supported HRC going for McCain-Palin. - Ernie Oporto
First of all, the pick is aimed at two groups, 1) Independent voters looking for an atypical, reform-minded team, and 2) the pro-life, limited-government base. They'll take HRC voters, but that is not the primary target. Second point, it seems quite hostile and bigoted to say that because someone holds to a religious teaching, they can't be a good public servant. - Jim Ierley
I describe myself on my Facebook profile as 50% atheist and 50% agnostic. That's a little bit tongue-in-cheek, but it's also 100% accurate. I received a moderately religious Jewish education as a child, and was taught that the Biblical creation story was a *metaphor.* I was taught this by religious people who understood how powerful metaphors are, how they are not lies or untruths but extremely useful tools for imparting understanding. Most of the Christians I know who are my age were taught the same thing. - Mitch Wagner
And yet for the past quarter-century, the U.S. flew back to the past on evolution, going back to the pre-scientific view that it was God what done it. I don't know why that is, but I know that the people leading the backwards charge are slickers in thousand-dollar suits, and that it has always served the needs of powerful people to have hordes of followers who are kept ignorant and stupid. - Mitch Wagner
I think she said enough to silence the "Have you heard those words come out of her mouth?" people. - Daryl
I wish she'd said it all two months ago. But I really liked her message of "did you do this for me or all the issues that we fervently believe in." - Carla Thompson
I thought she did well enough. It was clear she wanted to do all the things "she had to do" according to the pundits. She could have warmed it up a little. Dared to emote. But why start now? - Shellee
""Just surviving is a talent," said Fechter. "I knew from the very beginning, if we could hang on long enough, some day the Rock-afire Explosion would live on again."" - Shellee via Bookmarklet

Yeah, Russian metal bands are wonderfully insane - Dan Kaplan
"This not only has the famed 808, 909 and 303 (conveniently covered with stickers of love) but also sorts of channel mixers, pedals and sweet interface that mimics the inputs and outputs as well as customization on nearly every aspect of the audio creation with these tools. Use your mouse to move things around, connect ins and outs and move the whole setup around." - Jason Wehmhoener via Bookmarklet

Moon news scoop! Surveyor blueprints lost in space; Scientists dig for answers! Corniness aside, its interesting that current NASA scientists are studying a scoop actually used on the moon to figure out how to build a new one for future use. - Kelly Fox via Bookmarklet

i still have a tub of the early '70s vintage LEGO (before every part became overspecialised) in the garage at my folx and hope they haven't melted! many fond childhood memories in all that plastic. - Joe Blair
"In 1934, [Paul] Otlet sketched out plans for a global network of computers (or “electric telescopes,” as he called them) that would allow people to search and browse through millions of interlinked documents, images, audio and video files. He described how people would use the devices to send messages to one another, share files and even congregate in online social networks. He called the whole thing a “réseau,” which might be translated as “network” — or arguably, “web.”" - Kelly Fox
Very interesting, and goes to show that new ideas can sometimes stem from old one that were before their time. De Vinci came up with the helicopter, but just didn't have the electricity, gears, etc. to make it happen. - Chris Reed
"An American military supercomputer, assembled from components originally designed for video game machines, has reached a long-sought-after computing milestone by processing more than 1.026 quadrillion calculations per second." - Kelly Fox
Anything to reduce coal usage. Let's all buy solar panels and demand more new nuke plants! - Tad - just Tad
I wouldn't say no to that. I hope it's true - the high price of oil is good for something! - felix
How does the current crop of solar panels hold up against hail storms? I ask cos we're about to drop $8k on a new roof due to hail damage...and almost all of our neighbours are having to do this, as well. - Joe Blair
With all of these green stories in the news, I can't help but wonder why these developments are still nearly two years in the future. I'd have solar at home right now except the technology hasn't changed much in 20 years and my tech husband was convinced better technology and cheaper solutions were on the horizon. - Shellee
I wondered how long it would take until the wife showed up to harass me... - Kelly Fox
That is a really good question Blair, I don't know. I have been wondering the same thing since we recently had a huge hail storm here. - Geoff Schultz
And yet people still want to drive 90mph on the highway - in their huge SUV's and trucks. At least here in the US. I know things are much different in Japan where everyone has a smaller car. - Mike Reynolds

@Amy I always wanted to get a Mini Cooper and put a decal on it that said "I'm compensating" LOL - Geoff Schultz
They could have rebranded the Hummer knowing that it causes less CO2 impact than building a Prius (see last month's Wired). Cars are about identity in the US, it's shame a business model retrofitting electric engines into a Hummer with rebranding couln't happen :( - Ray Podder via twhirl
The hummer is dead, long live the hummer. It's about time. - Patrick Beard
nonsense. they will make a hybrid hummer and it will sell like gangbusters. you people don't know a damn thing about penis size. when I see you on the highway I'm going to run over ur lame ass Prius - Noah David Simon
no more hummers. can scarcely believe it. - edythe
http://www.smartusa.com/ FTW. Clinton is dropping out on Friday, and GM is going to stop selling Hummers. It's like we're in the future, man! - Karim
Bummer, one of my dreams is to own a Hummer. Guess it'll be a collector's item. =) - Craig Eddy
bummer. Hummers rock. (Although they kept making them smaller and smaller - H3 commercials == epic fail.) - Bruce Williams
I for one will not mourn the passing of the Hummer. For those who do, fret not, there's always the chance that the Pentagon will allow the creation of some kind of MRAP for civilians. Imagine picking up the kids from soccer practice in THIS baby: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I... - Karim
Of course there could be a problem with kids fighting over who gets to ride in the gun turret. Brings a whole new meaning to "riding shotgun" though. - Karim
now if they would just lower the price on the us smart car. it's too expensive. i liked the daily show a while back when rob corddry was driving a hummer limo and had to keep getting out every two feet to fill it up with gas. :D - edythe
too expensive?!? on what, a cost-per-pound basis? :-) they start at less than $12,000... - Karim
the Hummer looked good. the MRap looks like something from South Africa... uh oh yeah... - Noah David Simon
even THAT guy is more persuasive than McCain and his creepy artificial smile tonight. I don't know if I can continue to watch. - Shellee
"A Leader We Can Believe In" plastered behind his head. I mean seriously, is his whole campaign from here going to be "What Obama said, only I mean it and Obama is the opposite of that. Look! A monkey!" - Kevin Fox
Seriously, are there 150 people in that room? - Kevin Fox
The McCain campaign is clearly saving money on advisers. Just following Obama's lead. - Shellee
I liked the part where he talked about Obama repeatedly calling it "The 3rd Bush Term" and how he had to say it over and over because it would make it true and then goes on to say "Change you can believe in" 437 times. - Geoff Schultz
