I'm traveling to rural South Africa for work next week. It's my first time overseas. We'll be in some very impoverished places interacting with children and villagers. Anyone got any useful "I-didn't-think-of-that" tips?
"Solid Poetry is a new kind of concrete that reveals a pattern once it gets wet. Dry, it looks like regular concrete (just like a regular hypercolor tee) but wet, a flower pattern emerges and then disappears again as it dries. The concept was a graduate school project from Frederik Molenschot and Susanne Happle in the Netherlands (where it rains all the time)."

Dell computers has introduced a new site for women who apparently found traditional laptop shopping to be a hypermasculine, intimidating experience chillingly devoid of new music and throw pillows. Called Della -- like Della Reese! -- the site at first appears more like a lifestyle magazine than a computer store, with "featured artists" and soothing portraits of women sipping their morning coffee and getting their chakras aligned near scenic mountains. I mean, I think I want an Inspiron, but will it match my chai latte and my upscale yoga retreat? It's great to see Dell reaching out to female customers, but the language of the site is painfully dopey. Take, for instance, the site's "Tech Tips": "Once you get beyond how cute they are, you'll find that netbooks can do a lot more than check your email." Huh. OK. Like what? "Eat better: Find recipes online, store and organize them, and watch cooking videos." Also: "Your mini can be your meditation buddy."

What would you do? Just had an interesting exchange with a co-worker. She and I are working on a project & the people who've been on the project previously are out today, so neither of us truly knows what's going on. I asked her if she told the client that, she said she'd rather just fake her way through it. I have the exact opposite reaction.
I would admit immediately that I'll try my best, but I have no history with the project so any of my fumblings or misunderstandings are explained. And then I'd try to knock it out of the park!!!

I agree with JoEllen. It will save you embarrassment down the road.

if you DON'T say something...then it goes wrong, they will be annoyed you never told them most like MORE than the fact it's gone wrong, so why risk that? ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
I'd be honest. I've tried the faking your way through option. It...NEVER...works.
- Helen Sventitsky
Oh, I'd definitely just say explain that you're filling in and ask for context. You'll do a much better job that way.

I've been in this situation a lot and I always go with the truth. I tell them I'm not making excuses, just stating the facts, and that I will work hard to get up to speed and solve their problems. It's been my experience people are much more understanding and will try to be helpful, it's in their best interest after all. And, once in a while, depending on their needs and timelines, they've opted to just wait for whomever is in charge. I don't like that though, makes me feel as if I've disappointed them. :)

@Ginger, I dunno...It implies that objects have been lifted into another kind of worth status - that by taking a Capri Sun juice pouch and making it into a purse it's way cooler or something. It's the same as "recycling" or "reusing" or plain ol' being crafty, but with a catchy hipster, eco-phrase attached.
- JoEllen
Never heard it used that way: that sounds obnoxious. I guess because of my background in IT, I immediately thought of bringing a server back up.
- Mark Trapp
I had never heard of it my self until just now. At the risk of sounding like a contrarian I kind of like it though. I am not going to upcycle the word recycle from my lexicon in favor of it though. @Mark I thought the same thing heh.
- Geoff Schultz
I see what you mean about the trendy phrasing and perceived value.
- Ginger Makela Riker
example that is lame: using a cool soda bottle as a vase = upcycling. No doubt there are companies that do cool things like the Samsung Blue Earth phone (body of phone made from recycled plastic bottles + solar panel charger) or the hi-tech sleeping bags and fabric made from old bottles or bags - but simply using it in a different way doesn't count or make it any more valuable.
- JoEllen
I thought choosing products based on what you can do with the packaging/etc. later, was called precycling.

Missouri Pettway, 1902-1981. Blocks and strips work-clothes quilt, 1942, cotton, corduroy, cotton sacking material, 90 x 69 inches. Missouri's daughter Arlonzia describes the quilt: "It was when Daddy died. I was about seventeen, eighteen. He stayed sick about eight months and passed on. Mama say, 'I going to take his work clothes, shape them into a quilt to remember him, and cover up under it for love.' She take his old pants legs and shirttails, take all the clothes he had, just enough to make that quilt, ahd I helped her tore them up. Bottom of the pants is narrow, top is wide, and she had me to cutting the top part out and to shape them up in even strips."

Swine Flu: Has anyone contracted the flu that wasn't directly in Mexico? Has it jumped from someone who was in Mexico City to someone who was just hanging out in Cleveland or where ever? How is 20 deaths an epidemic?
oh I heard 20 deaths this morning on NPR. Maybe they mis-read it. Both my husband and I commented about it. Hmmm. UPDATE: yes is was misstated this morning on NPR.
- JoEllen
Last I heard, there's now a case in Sacramento. It's moving north AND east, NYC, notwithstanding.
- Helen Sventitsky
Sigh. It's not an epidemic because of what's happened; it's a health risk because of the possibility of spread. And, yes, at least one of the US victims was the wife of a man who had traveled to Mexico a few weeks ago. And there are currently 150+ deaths, with 30-40 every day. You don't wait until there's a flood to build a dam.
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
@Glen - I'm not judging what should and shouldn't be done, I was just trying to get a sense of the real risk. I feel like the media makes it into something larger and scarier than it is.
- JoEllen
Also in Spain and Scotland here in Europe. The test takes some days to develop so there are flu cases here in Norway too under investigation but not Swine Flu officially. But remember that none have died from it outside of Mexico (where modern healthcare is available).
- Thomas Bøhm
I also read about a case as far away as New Zealand. It's amazing how small our world is.
- Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
so far about 20 of these deaths have been confirmed to be as a result of swine flu, there's belief that a second infection is doing the majority of the killing. So far, all of the deaths have been in mexico whereas everyone outside of mexico has recovered or is recovering from it. The fact that all the deaths are in mexico skews things and so you can't determine how fatal it is, you can only be prepared and ensure it is contained whereever you find it. Pandemic, it certainly isn't. For now.
- alphaxion
@alphaxion - thanks, maybe that's the number I heard this morning.
- JoEllen
The problem is that it's difficult to know the "real risk." One of the characteristics of this flu virus that has people VERY worried is that most of the deaths have been teenagers and young adults. This is very uncharacteristic of flu in general, whose victims tend to be the very young, the very old, and the already ill. It's also similar to the pandemic flu epidemics of the early 20th...
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
@glen and the mortality rate of spanish flu (the one that killed 40million in 1918) has the highest known so far - 2.5%. Which means a hell of a lot of people were infected, look at the speed of swine flu, it's nowhere near as communicable, the rate of deaths is currently at about 7 to 8%, which is totally unprecedented in our recorded history suggesting there's more going on - hence the belief that it's a secondary thing killing the majority of people rather than the flu.
- alphaxion
Clearly there is also a definite link between better health care and the rate of mortality thus far, which could be unfortunate for many parts of the world, if it spreads.
- JoEllen
@JoEllen The deaths are in Mexico though. I think it has to do with the people being poor and not having access to better healthcare. =(
- Shevonne
@Shevonne, yes, that was my point. These horrible health events (SARS, AIDS (to some degree)) take their toll on underdeveloped communities or in places where the population is highly concentrated and poor. I wonder if it is insensitive to suggest the disparities, thus everyone is put on alert.
- JoEllen
which would be what JoEllen said... technically.
- alphaxion
Oh sorry JoEllen, I didn't read what you said right before I typed. =D I'm not myself.
- Shevonne
The disparity in health care access probably has a lot to do with why they haven't been able to confirm the causes of death in all these cases. It only takes a few hours to confirm it if you have access to the techniques.

"This novel’s inventive format strives to overcome its wan plot and familiar characters. Titled Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry, it’s a narrative assembled as an auction catalog. Author Leanne Shapton presents a parade of objects from the couple’s life together, improbably put up for sale following the collapse of their four-year relationship. The book features blunt black-and-white photographs of personal artifacts—from a heart-shaped silver toast rack to a taxidermied squirrel—numbered and captioned with the cool eye of an undertaker or an intern at Christie’s."

Cool new teapot design. Graphics appear when the water is hot enough inside. "is made from enamel-coated stainless steel and a high-temperature silicone- which allows you to place the teapot directly on the stove, but still pick it up to pour when it’s ready. so when you attach the magnetic trivet to the bottom you can carry it with you to the table- no need to pour into a separate teapot."
