searcing for a specialist to decide that those are fake or real drawings :)
- Burçak Çubukçu
Peter can I send you some of the originals? We might as well find out the truth. I'm curious about a couple of them.
- Michael Fidler
I'am a sceptic. If those are real drawings. Somebody has to prove it. Is there a video link that some one actualy draw one of these for instance?
- Burçak Çubukçu
Just to show you Burçak, that I'm curious about the truth also, I've done a little investigating myself. I found the original picture from which the Jesica Alba drawing is copied. http://bit.ly/gAXX
- Michael Fidler
how'd you get Johnny Depp to sit still for so long?
- Nathan Rein
Michael, I do belive in "PHOTOSHOP". Anyway thank you for your efforts.
- Burçak Çubukçu
Burçak Çubukçu I think I'm leaning a little in your direction now. After overlaying the two images, they're practically identical. There is a tiny difference on the ruffle of her dress, but otherwise they are the same. To be honest, they "could" be photoshopped!
- Michael Fidler
ok Jessica Alba's could be a drawing...
- Burçak Çubukçu
drawing photo-realistically isn't hard when you're copying a photograph. they're probably real but not really art. Just great artistic skillz.
- JoEllen
Naturally the celebrities had to come from some type of original work, and a photo is the most likely candidate. I am starting to notice some small texture differences, especially in the one with Johnny Depp. BTW, I found the original for that too. It's on the cover of the DVD for the movie.
- Michael Fidler
@The Other Brian (Norwood), You cold be right, and perhaps that explains why some of the detailed work was left out on the Johnny Depp piece. Here's a link to a few more, which are more obvious, but still came from the same set http://bit.ly/tklrX
- Michael Fidler
I own a book called "How to Draw Lifelike Portraits from Photographs" by Lee Hammond. It shows all the techniques and phases of creating something like this in pencil and graphite. So... Yes, it is possible. If you ask me, though, this is an artform best left to the ADD set.
- Angela
Kol, I can't thank you enough! Kol found a different posting, which proves these are all pencil drawings. I had my doubts about a few of them, because they were collected from several locations. The site Kol found has done a wonderful job pulling together an even more impressive collection .Take a look. http://www.flickzzz.com/2009...
- Michael Fidler
No worries, Michael. :-) Shame we couldn't find all the artists.
- Kol Tregaskes
Thank's James!!! Actually I've been waiting for two month's for someone to bring these back up. Since I posted them in March, I've not only discovered who all three of the artists are, but found some new one's as well. I'm going to look for info on the artists, and post it. Could you please pop-up the other one as well? I would prefer to post it there. It's the one with a bear, lion, and I believe a tiger on it. Thanks again!
- Michael Fidler
James, I just saw the post you left on the other set. Sorry I missed it. For the record, I always knew that these were copies of photographs. I ran them through TinEye before posting anything in the hopes of discovering the artists. In the comments, several people correctly pointed this out as well. However, it still doesn’t diminish the quality of the work.
- Michael Fidler
We're conditioned to react unfavorably to the supposedly conflicting elements in the photograph. If she were a statue, holding a sword while nursing her child, I suspect we'd react differently.
- Christopher Harley
Girls and Guns, and Boobs... how can you go wrong
- Victor Ryden
@Chris, I wouldn't react any differently. What woman would nurse her child while posing with a weapon of any kind (not to mention actually using said weapon)?
- Kenton
If that's so, Kenton, I'd love to be able to spend 10 minutes inside your brain.
- Christopher Harley
um can anyone say abuse? And I'm not talking about the gun. This child is WAY to old to be on a boob, I'm utterly disgusted.
- Kelly W.
Maybe I need you to expand on your idea then Chris, because I don't see the difference between a sword and a gun.
- Kenton
To me, swords are all but ceremonial today. In the past they weren't and if they were being held at the ready it meant defense. The image of a mother, especially a nursing mother, holding a sword would have indicated a society on the brink of complete collapse. At least as an artistic conceit.
- Christopher Harley
To me the striking thing about the photo is that it is a weapon, I wouldn't feel any different if it was an AK-47, a missile launcher, or a switchblade. The incongruity is the same for me.
- Kenton
It could be a weapon. It's doubtful she'd have much luck hunting duck or pheasant with any of the other weapons you mentioned. Trust me, Kenton, the incongruity stems from a temporal disassociation between her role as mother and the degree to which you've allowed her to assert herself as such. Ask yourself; if she were in a nineteenth century oil paining would the elements seem any more harmonious?
- Christopher Harley
Hmmm, Chris, if she were in a cave painting holding a spear it would be incongruous (aside from the fact that "cave women" didn't hunt), but in a 19th century painting holding a sword it isn't? Not for me. I don't care whether she is hunting ducks, people or skeet, a weapon is a weapon and holding it while nursing a child is incongruous in my personal opinion.
- Kenton
@mark - surely you can tell the difference between the 2 photos

I can't really look away from this picture. It's quite fascinating on a lot of levels.
- Jon, the Chilled Beartato
is this a documentary photograph? I don't think so. It reads like a statement photograph, staged and therefore not especially outrageous... like a lame Benneton ad or something. Feels like someone is desperately trying to be artsy or controversial. I don't take it at face value.
- JoEllen
@Christopher - I disagree. I think the whole thing is staged, the outfit, the gaze of the shirtless child, the location, the gun. Lantern, gun, 3 month old or 2 year old - it's all done purposely, which is what someone taking/directing the photo would do. The age of the child and the action/prop don't provoke me at all, I just think they were chosen to make a statement.
- JoEllen
The breastfeeding isn't a big deal, it certainly isn't "abuse" or wrong" like some think. But I don't like guns being around young children. Even in staged photos. Just my personal issue.
- Summer
2 people nailed the age in this photo, but no one is "close" on my current age. Don't let the balding grey haired guy fool you. it's just genetics.

Dry, it looks like regular concrete (just like a regular hypercolor tee) but wet, a flower pattern emerges and then disappears again as it dries. "Pew’s new poll about “necessities” finds that Americans still find life unimaginable without their cars. Nearly nine in ten count their automobile as indispensable, ranking it far ahead of any other item in that respect. The also rans: - 66% for a clothes dryer - 54% home air conditioning - 52% a TV set - 50% a home computer - 49% a cell phone But then look at the bar chart that compares this year’s results to those from 2006, the last time the poll was done. Energy gobbling mainstays of modernity like the clothes drier and air conditioner seem to have a much weaker hold on us these days. And our old friend the television is also down big time."

@Carlos I agree. Dryer before Air Conditioning?
- Shevonne
The only necessity for me on that list is the computer and high speed internet. I can live without everything else.
- Admiral Anika
werd, that's crazy to me. i need that ac in the summer. high speed net service is up there too. no dishwasher, no microwave
- Cee Bee
AC also depends on where you live. In Seattle, it's not necessary at all. No one has it. Totally different story in the south, though.
- Rochelle
Personally. I'll take car and internet. Living in MN we need a clothes dryer during 7 months of the year... so I guess I'll have to take that too.
- JoEllen
fwiw, i have never had a drivers license in my life and I'm 32. My wife hasn't either, but she is working on getting one. :) And a clothes dryer is totally unneeded if you have a yard in the summer and a woodstove in the winter. Not that I do, but I wish I did!
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
A lot of this data is generational - landlines vs. mobile phones, for instance. A lot of the rest depends on the time of year - a lot more people will rank an AC as a necessity if you ask them in July vs January. There's also a urban/suburban divide - a clothes dryer isn't really that necessary if you live across the street from a laundromat. In short, I find this data to be kind of useless.
- Eric P
i think it's more geographical than generational although there may be some correlation with how much someone is involved with technological changes and their respective age, but not necessarily. still, i wouldn't call it useless as it gives an interesting view of perhaps the regional differences some in the us have when it comes to necessities vs "luxuries"
- Cee Bee
It's actually a great criticism about being so addicted to something that's so "trendy", but y'know, it's good to admit your weaknesses :).

This is not a mistake. I work in the design agency that helped put the packages together. One of my poor attempts is above. It was something I drew when I was young (many years ago). I used to draw all the time but I've not drawn anything for ages now. I'd like to start again and combine drawing with photography in the future. My palette is limited to pencil and black/white drawings. Painting, for me, is a struggle and colouring always comes out a little wrong. :-)

The question should be: Do Artists still "paint, draw, sculpt..." ? I guess so, because Painting can mean creating images with Processing, and Sculpting can mean making physical computing constructs with Arduino and drawing can be fabbing with a 3D printer from 3D generative algorithms... Of course there are artists here. Just a thought.
- Brad Kligerman
I still draw stick people and houses with big windows and a chimney with a plume of smoke, anything else is beyond my capabilities.
- M F
I typically paint (acrylics, oils, watercolors), but I also do a bit of hand sculpting, pottery wheel, and if you forced me to, I will also draw, though I prefer charcoals and pastels for that.

Nice thread, Kol. I used to draw all the time as a youngster but lost touch until I had some free time and took a drawing class at a local nonprofit art school about 5 years ago. Just like you, I cannot paint, either, and have no eye for color, so I stick with B&W. Here are a couple of charcoal sketches from that class: http://huffstuff.com/images... and http://huffstuff.com/images... . I loved that class so much and would love to go back.

Yes, parenting, family, community, church (yes, church), school, etc. I was having a conversation this morning about much the same thing. Most people make up their minds about the world before ever realizing it, before being faced with each specific issue. Or more specifically, let their minds be made up for them by the factors listed. It takes some self examination to overcome that....

honestly I think many people lack empathy and it is often easier to be mean and selfish than it is to see that others are treated equally, or to follow "the golden rule." Their own needs are deemed greater than everyone else because they can't see it from any other point of view.
- JoEllen
I blame Burger King for telling everyone: "Have it your way"
- John Wang
I think it amounts to people only noticing in others what they covet for themselves, whether they consciously acknowledge it as such, or not. By that I mean what others seem to be able to get away with, or seem to be playing the system, etc. Maybe it isn't so much coveting as it is feeling sorry for themselves that they worked so hard to do the right thing (which already puts them above many) and others appear to aspire and acquire without the same high standard.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
All that blah blah being said, @Mona is right: no *clear* reason!

Chris: that is the kind of attitude that disregards empathy and understanding :p If we try to understand why people are as they are, we ourselves will be better because it holds up a mirror. A little understanding can lead to change in others faster than a dismissal, too. I'm not advocating excusing anyone of anything; just some empathy.

Mona I guess it depends on the situation, there are times when someone should feel entitled to something an other times they should not. People should not feel entitled to a seat on a train, unless they have a medical condition that requires them to sit on the train, or are too fragile to stand.

Dell computers has introduced a new site for women who apparently found traditional laptop shopping to be a hypermasculine, intimidating experience chillingly devoid of new music and throw pillows. Called Della -- like Della Reese! -- the site at first appears more like a lifestyle magazine than a computer store, with "featured artists" and soothing portraits of women sipping their morning coffee and getting their chakras aligned near scenic mountains. I mean, I think I want an Inspiron, but will it match my chai latte and my upscale yoga retreat? It's great to see Dell reaching out to female customers, but the language of the site is painfully dopey. Take, for instance, the site's "Tech Tips": "Once you get beyond how cute they are, you'll find that netbooks can do a lot more than check your email." Huh. OK. Like what? "Eat better: Find recipes online, store and organize them, and watch cooking videos." Also: "Your mini can be your meditation buddy."

Anything cooked in a bunch of butter usually turns out to be not that bad.

what kind of snails are they? They are awesome. Also, snails are mollusks, not insects.
- JoEllen
Makes for some excellent tomato sauce for pasta too.

Eric @ CS Techcast - not exactly... there is Finnish proverb (nasty one) Russians are always Russians even if you fry them in butter (ryssä on ryssä vaikka voikka pastaisi)

@joellen I know, I was just on about all bugs in general be they gastropods or multi legged. was poor sentence structure.

This post confuses me. Am I supposed to go CUTE! as if these are pet snails, or am I supposed to go NOM! as if they are delicious? Because I'm not really sure I can do either in good conscience...

Banana Slugs! I've seen bigger. Also, EW! I like them from a distance. I can't imagine holding them like in the picture... Again, I say, EW!

Oh stuff was going on here so fast I missed that. Bitches & hos, hookers & blow. What song is that? All a n*** knows. I'm going with biggie but my rap skillz are bad.
- anna sauce
animals doing bitches and hos with hookers and blow with alex scoble while posting pictures of their kids eating bacon on their macintoosh computers.

The men's hairy naked chest made for a very interesting evening for me and some dinner guests, but I'm still trying to catch the significance of cilantro and bacon ,-)
- Jess
Really long lists of drive-by comments that nobody will ever read.
- Ken Sheppardson
I guess people don't realize the posts with the men's hairy chests was in response to the rampant boobs and butts of the chicks that get posted. No one seems to complain about that. And yeah, I have an attitude. Stupid double standards.
- Derrick
Due to the fact that I've missed some of these overplayed themes that other people are sick of, seems there are other conversations going on here on FF. Yay!
- anna sauce
True. if that were the case im sure many of us would have been dead a long time ago

I believe that overexposure to stupid can give you an aneurysm or cause stroke.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
But truly a lot of people die from stupid every year.
- JoEllen
Then you all should stop reading my posts.

"The defense department regrets to inform you that your sons are dead because they were stupid."
- Brome
Stupid is a lot like high cholesterol. It never kills you right away, until so much stupid has built up in your system over time, and then that final bolus of stupid ends up lodging itself in your brain, and then, you're dead, just like that.
