"Back in August upon the launch of Apple's Snow Leopard we delivered benchmarks comparing Mac OS X 10.5 and Mac OS X 10.6 along with initial benchmarks of how Ubuntu 9.10 was running against Mac OS X 10.6. Since that time though Ubuntu 9.10 has been officially released with various changes since last August and Apple has issued two point releases for Snow Leopard, now putting it at version 10.6.2. As we await the release of FreeBSD 8.0 to deliver a larger operating system comparison, we have carried out a fresh round of tests comparing Mac OS X 10.6.2 and Ubuntu 9.10 (both x86 and x86_64 editions) under a variety of tests." - Arnaldo M Pereira from Bookmarklet

Ubuntu is Driving Me Away « Linux Canuck’s Weblog - http://linuxcanuck.wordpress.com/2009...
"I have used Ubuntu exclusively since Feisty and have tested each new release from alpha on. I have always been a big booster of Ubuntu and am active on several help forums. Yet, despite all of this history together I am thinking seriously of leaving Planet Ubuntu. Here’s why Ubuntu is driving me away." - ovigia from Bookmarklet
"You see, each time I install Ubuntu I have to strip out some things that I do not agree with and that should not be the case. If Canonical is to be consistent, I should not have to a a hypocrite about some things and not others. It is this inconsistency that is causing me to re-think Ubuntu." - ovigia

Cool and fast boot, beautiful login window and new desktop theme, lots of new applications: Ubuntu Software Center, Ubuntu One… You’ve upgraded, right? To celebrate the release of Ubuntu 9.10, I also to give a new updated version of Ubuntu Tweak 0.4.9.2 with a lot of refresh applications and sources for Ubuntu 9.10 only. There’s no doubt that you should upgrade to Ubuntu Tweak 0.4.9.2 too!" - Mike Chelen from Bookmarklet

Fwd: OpenShot is Video Editing Software for Ubuntu - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto... (via http://friendfeed.com/how-to-...)
OpenShot makes me excited to bail on my crashy Mac PowerBook and pick up an Ubuntu laptop. Now if only I could settle on a decent notebook for video editing... - Joel Zehring
Joel: try something with multiple cores, maybe 64bit with lots of memory. a decent video card chip helps too, what sort of audio or video input and output is important? - Mike Chelen
I've heard mixed reviews for 64-bit Ubuntu. Is it suitable for a Linux noob like me? Hopefully I'm not too spoiled by OS X. Input: DV camera via firewire. Output: h.264 files and the occasional video DVD. I've been looking at refurbished Dell Studio notebooks. - Joel Zehring
it's worthwhile to run 64bit if the rig has more than 4gb of memory. most apps can run okay, but it helps to check and see how easy or difficult they are. for drivers, look at the model number, or the chipsets for important pieces like firewire or video cards - Mike Chelen
Joel: dell studio 15 and studio xps 13 look good, 3d accel is important mainly for live video or playback, for non-linear editing it might not really matter. im unsure if openshot does both? probably cpu and memory will be most important for encoding - Mike Chelen
Mike: Thanks. I was looking at the studio 15 just yesterday. Currently saving my pennies. - Joel Zehring

testbeta: it could be the driver or config, do you know what chipset the video card has? could try reconfiguring xorg, there is a pretty good guide here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthr... - Mike Chelen
Mike: I'm all about the refurbs. Thanks. - Joel Zehring
thanks mike - testbeta
Joel: ATI will likely have better driver support in Ubuntu. also id go with AMD but idk really, so check CPU benchmarks. maybe pickup more memory if any supports more than 4gb, or if you get a unit that comes with less. im drooling :) - Mike Chelen
testbeta: for old nvidia chipsets, try envyng to select different driver versions http://packages.ubuntu.com/search... - Mike Chelen
thanks again - testbeta
Mike: I've heard that AMD is second fiddle to Intel at this point. I'll definitely look for a dedicated ATI card. I'm no fan of integrated graphics. - Joel Zehring
Joel: that is possible, there are so many different cpu chipsets, they can be difficult to keep track of. integrated graphics are getting better, however it seems nvidia and ati still have better support in linux - Mike Chelen

BBC SPORT | Football | Europe | Real Madrid debt spirals to £296m
"Real Madrid have announced a net debt of £296m, alongside a record annual budget of £381m for the new season. The club's annual figures include £226m spent on four players: Xabi Alonso, Kaka, Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. Real's debt last year was around £100m. Their budget is some £20m greater than that of arch-rivals Barcelona, whose £361m budget is also a club record. The announcement comes after Uefa approved plans to force clubs to spend only what they can earn in revenue." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
Stories like this annoy me. The people who own and run these clubs are adults, why should it be up to UEFA to decide how much they can spend? I have the same problem with American sports, where a team that is willing to spend more is derided for doing what it takes to win. Any company that wants to be dominant has to go out and get the best available people in the industry, which... more... - Bren, Not Grinchy
