"Paul .. I obviously put Burt into this slot for you! It was great to have you on to talk baseball and about your book. I think it turned out great. We have to do it again! As we say all the time around here .. Hit it Hard Somewhere! Joe"
- Joe Magennis
There's probably someone getting notified of log messages and faxing it by hand. The logging infrastructure they have there is to die for.
- Matt Mastracci
I think it's funny that they actually paid $1.50 for it :-)
- Jesse Stay
I'd bet they actually made it work through eFax, like the original post said. eFax does faxes via email, so it would be rather trivial to have it email the picture to them.
- Otto
Jim .. I'm the exact opposite and I talk about it all the time. I'm much better at working on projects than I am selling. It's a crappy position for an entrepreneur to be in, because you have to be selling all the time. So it's forced for me and projects can always be worked on ...
- Joe Magennis
Neal .. I was invited to use a service http://cotweet.com/ ... as a way to have multiple parties use the same Twitter account. Looking it over and thinking about recommending to a client. Was wondering if you were using too.
- Joe Magennis
what a way to kill innovation. thanks Facebook.
- Edgar Rodríguez
The number of 1/2 word comments is hilarious in and of itself.
- JonathanJoseph
I'm gonna miss FF when it's gone, but I like the idea of FF's awesomeness bringing Facebook's UI along a bit. I wonder how much time Paul et al will owe to FB before we see them back on the market with a new product?
- Daniel J. Pritchett
this is just one of those "bad dreams" like on the TV shows, right?

You're kidding. Say it ain't so....... Light the pitchforks, we're matchng to the castle......

Wow! & I just tweeted abt FriendFeed being Next.Big.Thing. 5 minutes ago! Beginning of the end for Twitter!
- Lawrence Liu
There goes the open web's alternative to the closed Facebook news feed heh
- Chris Saad
How ironic. That tweet I ref'd didn't get submitted cuz bit.ly had "a problem accessing Twitter." Posted now at http://twitter.com/LLiu...

Thinking about yesterday & at first thought I might not be spending whole lot of time on Twitter. Realized that's no solution. Still want to have conversations there, talking baseball, business, whatever.. I will just try to block noise. As always key is to find & participate in conversation. Solution is to search & use all platforms to the fullest
Yeah, agreed. You can't really just block out Twitter. I'm trying to use FriendFeed as a Twitter client as much as anything else since I've subscribed to folks streams that I really want to hear from. We'll see how that works.
- Sam Harrelson
from IM
right .. it's so easy to sort out the twitter noise by using Friendfeed, I think that will work. Then with threaded discussions it's easy to have a logical conversation.
- Joe Magennis
yep. much cleaner than @'s and RT's. i've created a "Twitter Friends" room with the twitter feeds of folks I want to stay in touch with "over there"
- Sam Harrelson
from IM
well, i'm here... i've had this FF account since before i changed from hecticdmc to danielmclark on twitter, which was... a year ago maybe? anyway, i like the idea of using FF to block twitter noise. something i'll have to investigate.
- Daniel M. Clark
only concern I have is that without the @ there may be a reply or comment within a thread that I miss .. not sure how to avoid that. I have full name searches & alerts but some things might just roll by without seeing.
- Joe Magennis
yeah, there are definitely some things that get missed. you can always run Winer's script and get the RSS feeds of folks you really want to see everything from in Google Reader. I've been pruning that down myself just to have a failsafe.
- Sam Harrelson

I need serious help with FF. For an idiot like me this isn't so intuitive really. Help section is nice but I need someone to hold my hand ..bleeech. Don't get me wrong I am sorry I was reluctant to try FF before

Giorgio - I'm seeing some activity through the Twitter API, too (that's what TweetDeck uses, I believe); not a lot, but some

yeah, it seems the web interface is down but the api is working..

I think the social media experts are going to spend the next hour talking about Twitter being down

- Travis Koger
I was planning to unfollow a bunch of followers due to Twitter's follow limit rule kicking in at the ~#2000 user level. I have to wait with that then... ;)

- Justin Long
twits will move, but only until twitter is back online, then there will be a mass exodus. Remember during all of the 2007/2008 fail whales users still flocked back to it regardless.

What will the blackhat SEO experts, the SM spammers, and the social media experts do during a widespread outage? The answer is obvious: While sitting out the crisis they're fine-tuning their methodology. Seriously, your question offends me. There's a gazillion of SEO experts out there who do not abuse social media.
- Sebastian
Sebastian there can't be a gazillion SEO experts! What's 10,000 keywords times 20?? (and that's being generous!)
- Arleen Anderson
Would a social media expert consider it to be a crisis? If they rely so heavily on just one or two tools that it's enough to throw them into a tizzy, their expert status would seem to me to be ... questionable, at best.
- Gord McLeod
Arleen, 10,000 keyword phrases times 20 is a tiny fraction of the search terms that are worth optimizing for. Think of the long tail. Also, consider lots of webmasters and even publishers / site owners / bloggers / Web developers ... SEO experts who are able to optimize their stuff quite successfully but don't sell or publish their expertise. Many of them, and even many SEO consultants, do make sensible use of social media, as plain users.
- Sebastian
Gord, in a social media spammer's book 2 hours of outage, IOW 2 hours w/o sales from sneakily distributed links to questionable sales pitches, can sum up to way more than a good day's beer money. ;) However, "crisis" might be a term too strong for this potential loss.
- Sebastian
Arleen: yes, reading this is fun. Sebastien SEO types are so easy to wind up. ;-)
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Gotta love it... @RobCairns says "come to Friend Feed? Not" and then his page shows ONE POST from Twitter in the past 18 hours! And that one talks about how Twitter seems to be slowing down again! (Sorry Rob, but that's just too good to let pass!)
- Mark Jepsen
Robert, admit it, you broke Twitter by massively unfollowing people. The DDoS attack reports have just been a ruse to cover up the fact that you were the backbone of Twitter all this time.
- Louis Trapani
Keep running into the wall a few times then find alternate outlets such as ff, linkedIn, etc...
- Kirsten Mitchell
from iPhone
Looks like the devious plan to move everyone to FF is working well. LOL :)
- Geer
Ha! The whole Facebook Twitter slowdown may have been just people clicking on spam (not a DDoS botnet). How funny! Manual DDoS. See Bill Woodcock's theory at CNet, AP, SF Gate, and The Register http://ff.im/6gLmO
- Mitchell Tsai
There you go again implying the only ones that use twitter is SEO experts, the celebrities, the spammers, the bots, and the social media experts - This is definitely SPIN. Perhaps you should join CNN also LOL

I'm having login issues with Facebook as well (and so are a number of my friends in different parts of the countries). FriendFeed FTW
- Sam Harrelson
from IM
@Sydney I rather like FriendFeed, there's just more people on Twitter for me, it drives WAY more traffic, and it's RARE good discussions evolve here from anyone other than POWER users.
- Ryan Stephens
love how we all pop over here when twitter is down ;)
- Kate
Ryan: how do you have discussions on twitter? I'll agree that they are rare.
- Johnny
Johnny: I have more discussions b/c my friends engage more there...of course harder to follow and usually include only 2-4 people. I LOVE the threaded comments here, provided a group of intelligent people were chatting, but how often does that happen? Sometimes with people like Scoble, Owyang and Louis Gray? (that's been my experience anyway.)
- Ryan Stephens
Ryan: I don't think it's fair to assume that there is a lack of intelligent conversation on friendfeed, especially with your 12 comments and 2 likes which tells me you've never really tried it out.
- Johnny
I was not fully awake trying to bring up the Twitter page. Good to know it wasn't just me.
- RuthNH
Ryan: I'd be happy to build you a list of friendfeed users and send them to you later today
- Johnny
Sam .. They are like alternate universes. Didn't expect anything in my Facebook feed, but knew it would be hopping here. Love this! This is going to be a Trending Topic I suspect ....
- Joe Magennis
from iPhone
@johnny I'd love to see that list, I'm going to sit down with friendfeed this weekend and figure it out
- Sydney Owen
Well, you mean in general or just the current outage? ;)
- Mads Kristiansen
Sydney: Subscribe to Kol (http://friendfeed.com/koltreg...) He is a very active user on friendfeed and already has a recommendation list. I'd be happy to create an additional one for you as well.
- Johnny
.. Scoble must have run his script again, I guess.. ;)
- Mads Kristiansen
Johnny: That's completely fair. I've lurked a lot & have read a lot of Louis Gray's, Scoble's and Valeria Maltoni's insights with respect to FriendFeed. You're right, maybe I'm not following the right people. And I didn't necessarily mean to imply there was a lack of intelligent conversation. It's just rare that I've seen these discussions develop from anyone's comments aside from a few power users. I'd be grateful for a list of users.
- Ryan Stephens
I heard from someone that Twitter doesn't even know why it's down.
- Paul Chaney
Ryan: I'll subscribe to you and get you a list in the near future. This conversation that you are engaging in right now happens with the majority of users (not just power users).
- Johnny
Yep, Twitter is still not working out here on the east coast @ 10:07am.
- Dion Hinchcliffe
Facebook and Twitter are getting slammed. But internetpulse.net indicates the Internet is humming along.
- Ed Moltzen

- Andria Krewson
from iPhone
Johnny: But how often does it start from someone's message that's not a 'power user' ? How often does someone following 100, have a 100 followers end up with conversations like this off of one of there comments?
- Ryan Stephens
I already have. But you're the only one who listens to me here.
- Scott Jangro
My tipping point in favor of FF wasn't this Twitter outage, but the BuddyFeed app on the iPhone. Great little piece of software.
- Sam Harrelson

- Joe Magennis
Cleaning up my following list here now so I can make the move. Yep, on BuddyFeed.
- Sam Harrelson
Ha ,, beat me with the recommendation. On the desktop I have the Friendfeed notifier running all the time. Love it.
- Joe Magennis
I've got FF running through GMail's IM integration. Makes me pine for the good old days before Twitter sold out :) Now if FF would just enable its search/Track feature within the IM client, I'd be a happy man.
- Sam Harrelson
from IM
I haven't actively used FF in ages. Took a while to load, guessing their servers are getting hit due to Twitter and Facebook going down. I went to CNN to see if there was a Social Media virus, but got the word on Mashable that it's unknown.
- Mike Buechele
Whatever it is, it's fun (for us... not the poor developers). This will certainly raise some questions about mission critical social sites, etc.
- Sam Harrelson
Raises major questions ... I am seeing some sarcasm, ho hums, derogatory comments aimed at Twitter (especially non-users) .. But this is a much bigger situation than just not being able to stay connected to a follower base. Without a doubt we are heading towards ubiquitous live web connectivity and reliance on these services for news, communication .. hell, even critical medical...
- Joe Magennis
Good points... so is the answer open-source federated micro-messaging clients (many little Twitters/laconi.cas)? Having everything go through one company doesn't seem like the right answer.
- Sam Harrelson
And of course, along with those federated clients we'd have to make twitter a protocol akin to IMAP or POP :)
- Sam Harrelson
yup .. it's why I was so interested in the early developments of Identi.ca (& why I miss the Gilmor Gang talking about this stuff).
- Joe Magennis
from BuddyFeed
no doubt. hey, we should do a podcast :)
- Sam Harrelson
"Yep .. Saturday evening fired up my Twit.am iPhone app (which I use all the time btw) .. to catch the inaugural episode. Also, the last Net@Night interview with founder of YFrog was great .. before you know it he's going to be storing all of our video data."
- Joe Magennis
Sam .. I commented about this on another FF post, but I'll say it here too. I will be very disappointed if native apps from Google for GV service also get banned! I am expecting to have a better way to use GV in the future and don't want to be blocked out by Apple. Would be a big mistake on their part with Android options avail.

"Does this chest protector make me look fat?"? ... And ultimately why would they choose this shot for the 1973 Baseball card? So many questions."
- Joe Magennis
I think people will flock to most current Q which should keep it at top of page - conversations on earlier questions will continue to dribble in like they do now. At least it's easy to tell what is supposed to be where.
- Scott Blitstein
right .. that's what i was thinking. You might have a pile of people on one thread having a good conversation while another question is just getting started. But again, thinking out loud, one big ole threaded conversation will be a monster.
- Joe Magennis
Yep - I agree. Many advantages - a few little quirks. Anything different is going to be, well, different. All in favor of FF as official alternate say Aye!
- Pamela
I great tool I leave open on my desktop all the time is http://friendfeed.com/about... .. a little pop up appears whenever someone has posted something within the stream I am following ...

- Neal Rohrbach
Neal .. that's a good idea. You can even make these things private (somehow) .. so it's not open to the public
- Joe Magennis
Thanks all for your help testing. And thanks again Scott for the awesome chat tonight! I could hear your fingers flying all the way over here.
- Pamela
Thanks Neal - you can go ahead and blame me if you want.
- Scott Blitstein
I had a great time - I just love me some talking about web apps you know.
- Scott Blitstein
Well this is after all just a back-up solution, right? But it would be good to have the rules in place should we need to use it!
- Michelle Riggen-Ransom
Yes, for back-up I think it works. Did realize I had missed many of the comments when I went back through and read these - but we wouldn't have this many topics going at once.
- Pamela
I'll get a real sbbuzz account set up and we can work on detailed instructions.
- Pamela
So - it might be fun to use this group (actually the real one at sbbuzz-chat) for some filler content during the summer hiatus. I have this "Newbies to Twitter" post at http://bit.ly/W1DDf - some great nuggets there. Maybe the off-weeks of the Twitter chat we can throw out a "special project" like this with some questions in a FriendFeed chat that people can come answer when they want to. Less interactive, but still something useful and crowd-sourced. What do you all think?
- Small Business Buzz
I was going to say I forgot it up in the plane before I jumped - or maybe I was pushed.
- Scott Blitstein
@Neal - see if it makes sense if I try to reply to you here. BTW, you guys are morbid!
- Pamela
Hey guys .. looks like you are giving Friendfeed a trial for future #sbbuzz .. cool! Sorry I am just getting into the office now. Must have missed a good one.
- Joe Magennis
@Pamela I guess maybe?....took me this long to figure out how you replied, lol
- Neal Rohrbach
@joe we're just doing some old fashioned continuity planning.
- Scott Blitstein
Hi Joe! Yep - just having a little late night nerd fun.
- Pamela
@Neal I do like that I can use your first name. Your Twitter handle it a tongue-twister!

FF works well for this type of threaded convo. Wonder if it makes sense to post multiple questions in diff threads .. or try to have one massive thread each week. That might get a little cumbersome
