Both of you will now be shepherded straight to the Jack White/Alicia Keyes Bond theme travesty room...have fun. - Alex Scoble CISSP
i think the White/Keyes is actually pretty damn good. - Zee from WeDoCreative

Zee will be following Josh in the shackles of shame to the White/Keyes room of torturous hell. - Alex Scoble CISSP
Shirley Bassey owns the throne forever. I honestly liked "Another Way to Die." But then again, I liked "Live and Let Die", too. For some reason I find them similar. - Victor Ganata
Sigh...good thing we built the room with extra capacity. Victor also gets a free trip to the worst Bond theme song ever room...have fun listening to Jack White wail talentlessly for one million times. - Alex Scoble CISSP
White's song was an excellent opening track - ballsiest rock song opening in years - Christopher Galtenberg
Hell, I watched the *original* "Casino Royale." Nothing can faze me. - Victor Ganata
No shame here. Living Daylights as a film sucked balls compared to most of the other films and this theme song is whiny. Nothing against Dalton. His debut was great in License to Kill. But anyway, this is about the music...For Your Eyes Only rules, followed by Live and Let Die, then View to a Kill, Diamonds are Forever. - Josh Haley
Yet another traveler to the theme song room of doom, congratulations to Christopher Galtenberg, you too will be spending a long time listening to Jack White's insipid voicings for far longer than you could possibly tolerate. - Alex Scoble CISSP
For getting your facts wrong (Timothy Dalton debuted in The Living Daylights), your sentence is now two million listens to the Jack White song. - Alex Scoble CISSP
Tom Jones FTW! Hahaha!!! - Victor Ganata
I can handle 2 million listens, sure. You are correct about the chronology, but it doesn't change the fact that Living Daylights sucked on your balls a bit. - Josh Haley

My worst fear come true. They just obsoleted a ton of cables and pretty much killed mass adoption - Bwana
I saw something about USB 3 on GeekBrief (I think that was it) the other day, and that report said that USB 3 was backwards compatible, like USB 2 was. IOW, you could plug a USB 3 into a USB 2 and it would work, but at USB 2 speeds. At least, that's what I thought I heard... - Joey Gibson
BASTARDS! - Josh Haley
Joey Gibson- true but to get the full blast of blinding gigabit/byte speed, you need new hardware and wires :( - Anthony Farrior
@Bwana - Why is this your worst fear? They didn't obsolete a ton of cables. USB 3 is backwards compatible with USB 2 and USB 1. - CJ Millisock
CJ - So you're saying I can plug a USB 3 device in my USB 2 slot even though the cable is different? - Bwana
If its truly backwards compatible, I can go on until USB 4 comes out without buying a new cable or a new adapter card. - Bwana
The one bad bit of news is that your old USB cables won't deliver SuperSpeeds—you'll have to have USB 3.0 gear from end-to-end to get the ridiculous transfer rates because the cables have extra pins for data, though it is all backward compatible. On the cable front you've got three plugs: Standard A (which looks like the one you know and love), standard B (the square one), mini B(which looks like a bizarre double-headed monster) and micro" http://gizmodo.com/5090769/sup... - Anthony Farrior
So if I want the speed upgrade, I gotta buy a new cable. I'm not happy. Why? Because they're going to charge you up the wazoo for them. Good thing I won't have to care until 2010. By then, I'll have bigger things to worry about :) - Bwana
It would be nice if flash drives would actually read/write fast enough some day to keep up with the transfer rates. - GeekLad
unless I read it wrong Bwana to get the speed upgrade, you have to have hardware with the new design built in. Basically it's a Mac move. I have to buy a new box with the right USB 3.0 interface - Anthony Farrior
monoprice.com. Get your cheap cables on. Always. - abacab
abacab - Cheap is relative. if they sell the cables for $50 for a 6 footer, you _might_ get it for $20 on monoprice. That's still expensive. - Bwana
Anthony - I understand I'll need supporting USB 3 hardware in order to support it. I'm making a huge footnote that if I buy something USB 3, and I want the faster speeds, I'll have to consider the cost of cables on top of a new hub, and adapter cards. That's just me. Given all that, the upgrade path is more expensive than I had hoped. - Bwana
@Bwana - Yeah man, that cable looks different, but it fits into current USB slots. You're right about pricing--definitely needs to come down fast! - CJ Millisock
Maybe you've never used monoprice... I don't think I've ever seen a retail/B&M-$50 cable go for as much as $20 there. More like five bucks. - abacab
I have used monoprice, and I do believe for a new tech such as USB 3, they won't get as great deals on wholesale as they do now. I imagine the price will go down over time, but the initial 6 months (especially in this market) won't be as cheap as we're used to. - Bwana
Cool looking cable, I think - Ryan Twomey
Oh, same diameter just different design *blush*... - Anthony Farrior
finally... - Ryo
yikes - Caleb Elston
The price premium for new hardware makes any price difference in the cabling (from reasonable retailers, anyway) negligible. Short-term, buy a set of inexpensive plug adapters. - abacab

I am so very glad I don't worship this man's god. If that's really how god is, then screw him, he doesn't deserve my worship. If there is a God then I prefer to believe in one that loves his creation and wants them to be happy and to make their own purpose in life and support others in finding their happiness as well. Friday at 9:18 am - Link
"Because being good works. A person capable of doing basic math can figure it out. Looking out for numero uno is actually a very bad way of looking out for numero uno. Sheer, enlightened self-interest says "Be good, because being good makes the entire system which you are a part of and benefit from, work". Next?" - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
I choose to believe in a God who loves every individual person more perfectly and extravagantly than we can imagine, and who yearns for us to give just the barest sliver of that love to each other. I choose to believe in a loving, compassionate, forgiving God, who knows me by name and face and voice, and who has faith in me. Most of all, I choose to believe in a God who lovingly offers me the freedom to make this choice. - Ladybug Heather
While I respect your thoughts, Heather, I don't think it is really possible to "choose" to believe things. I believe things for various reasons, but they are all associated with things like evidence, logic, etc. I am literally forced to believe in Newton's gravitational formulae because when I test them they work. When I test the claims of revelatory religion, they fail to work. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
@Ladybug Heather, beautifully said. - Joey Gibson
Ah and see, I believe that one's faith can't be other than a choice. My rational brain has a lot of problems with the mythology of Christianity - virgin birth? physical resurrection? Puh-leeze! But it's a beautiful mythology, and it is the belief-system I *choose*. I'm learning to live into the mystery, to appreciate not only the not-knowing but the can't-ever-know aspects. Faith is what I choose to believe - with heart, brain, mind, body, and spirit all engaged to inform that choice. ... - Ladybug Heather
Another can choose the Jewish faith or the Muslim faith or classic Hellenistic polytheism - if that's what one's heart, brain, mind, body, and spirit call one to. Or, one might reject anything unprovable, and choose only to believe that which can be demonstrated with evidence. That's okay, too, but it is your choice. - Ladybug Heather
I'm not believing a god. Don't need one to try being good to others. Being good to others because fearing the hell is quite a paradoxon. It works, yes, but that doesn't make a "good" out of one. - Ryo
Oh, I don't reject anything unprovable. In fact, before I left the academia track I wrote a paper on "mandate epistemologies" where I attached that view as incoherent. However, what I do demand of things is that when they make claims they can back them up with something other than more claims. Christianity makes claims about the nature of the universe and the only reasons they give to believe them don't stand the basic tests of critical reasoning. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Ah, Ryo, not all religions have a hell or a devil figure. - Ladybug Heather
If there is a god, heaven, hell, etc, then those are facts about the universe far more important than gravitational laws...to just "decide" what to believe based on what tickles my psyche the best is to take the biggest chance possible. I can't understand what makes claims about religion any different than any others...is it ok to just choose to believe 2+2=5 or that the earth is flat? - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Well, Neal, there are some things that just can't be proven. You ca believe that 2 + 2 = 5, because that depends on what the symbols 2, +, =, and 5 represent. I can neither prove nor disprove the existence of a god, nor heaven, nor hell, nor valhalla, nor hades. What I do know, is that there is a part of me that hungers deeply for the divine and the transcendent, and I have witnessed this part within others. - Ladybug Heather
That said, the Christian mythology, combined with my personal experiences and those of others I know, has led me to choose Christianity, though I don't accept every tenet of every doctrine espoused by every Christian everywhere everywhen. I tend to the heresy of universalism, because I cannot imagine - and want no part of - an all-knowing, perfectly-loving, all-forgiving God who condemns one single person to hell. - Ladybug Heather
That's C.S. Lewis' argument from Mere Christianity, that the presence of the intuitive yearning for the divine argues for the existence of the divine. It has the flaws that 1) This yearning is not universal, nor is it observed to manifest across history and cultures the same way, thus its object cannot be considered the same thing and 2) Strongly wanting something to be so is not evidence for it being so. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
And "proof" is not what I am asking for. "Reasons to believe claims that are not fallacious, historically untrue, or proven to be impossible" is all I ask. I think the truth is important enough to not just accept things...I need a good reason. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
For example, the Abrahamic religions all make the claim that they are the one true description of spiritual reality that is true, and yet they make claims about things that are obviously false. If someone tells me 2 things, and I know the first is a lie and am not sure about the second, is it rational to just trust them on it? - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
I love the statement in our catechism (Episcopalian/Anglican) that says the bible contains all things needed for salvation. What it does NOT say is that all things in the bible are needed for salvation. Those claims were recorded by humans, and some (many?) of them are flawed. Of course, the problem is, we don't know which are flawed and which - if any - are right. - Ladybug Heather
When I said faith is a choice, I said that is after I've engaged mind and heart. God gave us brains to use them, not to blindly follow without thought. We have the freedom to think, to criticize, to disagree, to choose, to trust or mistrust. There's a whole LOT of dreck in the Christian tradition; I won't deny that. But I don't choose to blindly subscribe to all of it. I use my brain and heart, and I choose to put my trust in those I know to be worthy of it. - Ladybug Heather
Why accept any of it? The ethical goods are replicated in just about every religion before or since (they are the ethics of kindergarten, the true ethics: be fair, be nice, don't hurt, don't steal, don't lie...and prolly when you are grumpy take a nap, but that's not really mentioned) and the historical claims at the very least lack credibility. There wasn't even a town called Nazareth for Jesus to be born in, for example. No King Herod, no slaying of the children, no town with a manger. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Specifically, there are spiritual systems that do not make historical or material claims, like Buddhism, Taoism, etc. Why not pursue those? At least their dogma does not contain known lies. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Well, those might work for another. I've pursued some other avenues, but they didn't work for me. This sounds frivolous and flippant, when it's a much bigger choice than that, but I still choose trinitarian Christianity, and I adore the Anglican/Episcopalian expression of it. - Ladybug Heather
Going back to the beginning of the thread, though, do you see why I use the language of choice? It feels like you've come back to that place now, where you're asking why I don't choose a different path. And it sounds like if there were a religious system that could answer your questions more satisfactorily, then you might very well choose it. - Ladybug Heather
I have spent most of my life pursuing a spiritual life and asking these questions. I have read the Bible in four languages, studied the primary writings of the major traditions of Christianity (Apostolic successions and Protestant) and spent years training in everything from the Eastern Orthodox Church to Left-Hand Path ceremonial magick. I got two degrees in philosophy and was on my way to a third, all to find the truth. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
The truth is what I want, real truth, the way it really is, not something that will make me happy to believe, or even a better person to believe, but the real truth about the nature of existence and the spiritual life. I don't want superpowers or salvation, I just want the truth. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
No hell can frighten me away from that quest, nor heaven entice me away. I don't fear the consequences, and I can live with the uncertainty that the quest imparts and requires in the hope of someday having a real clue what the hell is going on here. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
:) Neal, you are a beautiful person, and I wish you only the very best in your journey. May light shine on your path. May the right doors open for you. And may you find the truth that you seek, and have it make you whole. - Ladybug Heather

This is what change looks like. It's messy. It's not fun. But it's pretty clear the church is on the wrong side of history here. It'll take a few decades for it to get on the right side, though. - Robert Scoble
it is a weird church, founded by a con man, with some magic golden tablets that nobody has ever seen, but has great family values, mormons make good citizens and good fbi agents ... people will believe anything in order to justify themselves, religion is one of the great examples - Gregory Lent
Gregory: they also run lots of businesses because they don't steal (most of the casinos in Vegas are run by Mormons for just that reason). - Robert Scoble
I like every Mormon I know. I don't get the appeal of the religion, but I certainly understand the appeal of the lifestyle - it's just not for me. - Tad, Fool
Tad: I once worked with an atheist who went to a Mormon church. He liked the community aspects of the church. - Robert Scoble
Tad: I like the Mormons I know too. It's too bad that their religion makes these mistakes historically, but that's generally what committees do, especially conservative ones that don't like change. They make great designated drivers, too, because they don't drink. I remember bringing Louis into the Ice Bar in Vegas and trying to get him to try some Vodka. I couldn't break him. I appreciate that about Mormons, they stick with the program even under duress. - Robert Scoble
Picturing Scoble as devil tempting Louis. Was it at least Grey Goose? - Cyndy
I am no fan of the Mormon church, however I am glad so many Mormons stood up against the church and supported the No on 8 side during this process. I get a little uneasy at protests when people hold signs reading "F--- mormons." I think its funny when people try to tell me that the Mormons are crazy for their beliefs and what have you, I mean is it any crazier than the Catholic Church when you really sit down and think about it. Like you drink wine, and that's supposed to be the "blood" of Christ. Why would you want to drink someone's blood??? - PC Easy via twhirl
I never knew Mormons were so awesome...I always thought they were a bunch of backward guys with white shirts, ties, and backpacks on bikes. New respect founded for them. - ♣genieyclo♣
Cyndy: it was something crazy expensive. I drank Louis' share, so I forget what we were drinking. :-) - Robert Scoble
@PC because you are a vampire? - Cyndy
You would want to if you believe that Jesus told you to. Transubstantiation is as silly a belief as occurs in just about any religion I can think of. - Tad, Fool
the mormon practice of missionary work for young members is something i'd not want to put my children though. - "The film shows missionaries proselytyzing in public squares, knocking door to door, struggling with a foreign language, congregating in zone and district meetings, and meeting with the president of the mission. Topics covered include missionary slang, leaving a girlfriend at home, missionary morale, and relationships with family at home." [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...] - MikeAmundsen
It isn't just the mormons who openly push agendas through church hierarchy. Some Catholic Bishops are using their ability to give communion as a weapon against influential politicians, in an effort to get their agenda passed. It's got to be pretty challenging to stick to a set of rules that are stagnant in an ever changing and evolving world. It's going to cause hiccups like this. But overall these churches do a lot of good in the world. Not that it minimizes the icky stuff either. - Occasional Headbanger
At least their kids are getting out in the world and doing stuff. I'm amazed that they're able to make converts - if you actually listen to the story of the church it's just so silly. But I guess they prove that with perseverance you can talk people into believing just about anything. And I think they do a lot of selling based around their lifestyle, which, again, I have lots of respect for. - Tad, Fool
actually, where is Louis and Jesse on this thread, I'd appreciate their thoughts given they are the only two mormons I know - Duncan Riley
My ears are ringing - why is it just Mormons we're talking about here? Catholic church had the same public stance, and in fact they were the ones that invited the Mormons to join the cause. Catholic church, with its history, has made way more "mistakes" than the Mormon church. - Jesse Stay
I chatted with some of the guys at LDS Church HQ the other day - I believe their biggest problem surrounding this has been communication, both to the public and members. It wasn't their intention to make any member feel like they had to vote for the proposition. Unfortunately some of the local leaders interpreted it that way which is what brought it into this mess. But this is why you see people like the Steve Young family and myself and reporters from Huffington Post all against the proposition. - Jesse Stay
(ctd...) It's because our church lets us - Jesse Stay
The ideal is to learn from others' mistakes, not repeat them. - scott anderson
Jesse, you've said it yourself: the LDS church places a high value on transparency, much more so than the Catholic church. Because the LDS has done this particular bit of dirty work so openly, it makes y'all an easy target. - Cecily
I'm sure they scared off thousands of potential converts, too. - Jason Kaneshiro
Jason, I imagine quite the opposite. In the past when such controversy occured, it brought more interest in the church and what it was. Protesting the church does nothing to hurt it. The best thing (being on the no on 8 side) the No on 8 campaign can do right now is look internally and figure out what they can do better to bring equality for all. Attacking others doesn't help the situation at all. - Jesse Stay via twhirl
@briantroy no insult felt or perceived here. Just want to be clear on why this is so important. I really do have more to say, just can't right now...too many balls in the air already. - Karoli via IM
liking for the commentary - Richard Walker
Liking the back and forth as well. FWIW, I'm a Mormon in Utah, but my uncle and his partner married in CA last summer. Believe me, the LDS church does not preach blind faith (although some members of the church feel that they should follow that way). There are many Mormons out there conflicted on this and other issues. Faith is a very personal thing. I'm glad the LDS church gives us that leeway. - Jared B. Luther
"...I couldn't break him. I appreciate that about Mormons, they stick with the program even under duress..." Scoble, that's called having principles. If you believe that your religious texts were written with a purpose, and mean what they say, then you're a hypocrite and a fool if you don't "stick with the program". I applaud those who stand up for what they believe, in spite of ridicule by those without principles. - Trevor Carpenter
Interestingly enough, the "Linda Stay" in that video (I saw that a couple days ago) is most likely a distant relative of mine. - Jesse Stay via twhirl
@Gregory, you do know that there are no originals for "the Bible" that we have, don't you? Every single translation of the Bible is based on copies of copies. Not one single original exists anymore and hasn't for well over 1000 years. Is that any different from Joseph Smith and the golden tablets? I don't think it is. (For the record, I'm not LDS; I'm a Methodist.) - Joey Gibson
@Joey I think that argument says more that I shouldn't buy into either one rather than any defense of Mormon belief. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Joey, I'm not religiously inclined, but wouldn't the Dead Sea Scrolls (old Test) and the Codex Sinaiticus (new testament) count for older than 1000 years? - Duncan Riley
We have that covered. 8th Article of Faith "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God." - Michael Larsen
@Neal, it's a matter of faith. I believe that even though the originals of "the Bible" are no longer extant, they did exist, and there is truth in those writings. What I don't like is Christians criticizing Mormons for believing in a book whose origin was similar to their own. If that makes sense... - Joey Gibson
Since when did this become a discussion of which religion is true? - Jesse Stay via twhirl
I dont know but Mormon girls r pretty dam hot, for that reason I am willing to believe whatever gospel she believes in. Oh and those church arranged dances, etc....cool stuff... - imran
@Joey Thanks for the explanation, I understand your point. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
@Duncan, Sainaiticus is ancient, sure, but it's not an original. It's the oldest we have, but still not original. The Dead Sea Scrolls are also ancient, but still not originals. - Joey Gibson
imram I agree - I'm married to one ;-) - Jesse Stay via twhirl
@ Jesse, u r lucky....they r very good ppl. - imran
Personally, I left the LDS church because I couldn't subscribe to many of their policies. Most of my family are still Mormons and many of my friends as well. Echoing some of you, I've liked most I've met. But I've seen the ugly side of the church, too, and ultimately did not agree with the "gospel" according to J.Smith. Undoubtedly, the Prop 8 issue is bringing out the best and worst of Mormons. - Jenny R.
Before people complain about churches imposing their agendas on people, remember what the Southern Christian Leadership Cnference imposed its religious beliefs on the South and the North in the 1950s and 1960s. Dr. King wasn't a pediatrician... :) - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
I'm a member of the Mormon church and I have am thankful to be a member of a church that stands up for the principles it strongly believes in. I'm thankful to be a member of this church. There has been some discussion about its doctrine and for that I would see official sources including http://www.mormon.org/mormonor... and http://jesuschrist.lds.org/ - Darren Labrum
Personally, I'm all about which church has the best tech policy ;-) - Jesse Stay via twhirl
Hey Jesse :) haha you make a great point. - Darren Labrum
Right! How many churches contribute OSS? http://dnx.sourceforge.net/abo... - Jared B. Luther
LDS seems to be against alcohol, yet you do not see church members out protesting liquor laws. So why did they choose gay marriage to be so uppity about? - Gabe
This Prop 8 defeat has actually been very good in some ways: It's energized the grassroots queer rights movement, MIA since the ACT UP days. It's shown the backwardness of some aspects of the Catholic and Mormon Church and it's caused some members to question their leadership. (I loooove the blowback of all this. Churches want to influence and speak in the public sphere? Great! Now we speak back.) I wish, however, that Mormons would stay part of their church and fight to reform it instead of leaving. - Rick Powell
