Critic’s Choice - New DVDs - D. W. Griffith - NYTimes.com
2 hours ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
"D. W. Griffith, one of the most celebrated figures in American film, is probably the only silent-movie director whose name is known to the general public. And yet, as a new boxed set from Kino, “Griffith Masterworks 2,” reminds us, he is still underappreciated, with much of his work waiting to be rediscovered. A few decades ago Griffith was most famous — or perhaps most notorious — for having made “The Birth of a Nation.” This 1915 Civil War film did much to convince the world that motion pictures were an exciting, articulate new form of expression, but at the same time perpetrated hateful stereotypes of blacks and celebrated the Ku Klux Klan as a heroic force. " - Abby Martin via Bookmarklet
"More recent scholarship has concentrated on Griffith as one of the great form-givers of early cinema. His work — particularly in the years 1908-9, as documented in Tom Gunning’s essential book “D. W. Griffith and the Origins of American Narrative Film” — contributed several major elements to the evolving capacity of movies to tell a story." - Abby Martin
"But beyond Griffith the racist and Griffith the innovator lies Griffith the artist, and his creativity did not stop after the box office failure of his most daring film, “Intolerance,” in 1916. The Kino box (a welcome sequel to its “Griffith Masterworks,” of 2002) is proof that he continued to function on a very high level, up to and including his final movie, in 1931, “The Struggle.”" - Abby Martin
The narrative rules of Griffith's films are with us still. - TStowers

Well it wasn't exactly a *bump*, per se, more like an air-bump (like and air-high-five), cause of all the security dudes around the guy. And yes, it was quite imposing. I'll remember this. Overwhelming? idk, not really, considering I had to go use the potty. - ♣genieyclo♣

Laser Welding Skin Closure Like Star Trek
Laser Welding Skin Closure Like Star Trek
3 minutes ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
From Technovelgy: "Laser welding of body tissues may provide a means of closing surgical incisions that is better than traditional methods. The technique, pioneered by Professor Abrahim Katzir of Tel Aviv University, can also be used with great efficacy on cuts made inside our bodies during surgery. Prof. Katzir set out to find the right temperature for optimal wound healing, and to perfect a device that could maintain this temperature. He is the first to apply the carbon dioxide laser, coupled to optical fibers, for wound closure under a tight temperature control. His innovation is in the use of unique optical fibers made from silver halide developed at Tel Aviv University. Successful clinical trials have already been made on people undergoing gall bladder removal surgery. Following surgery, four cuts were left on the skin of the abdomen, two of which were sutured and two laser-bonded. The results of the trials suggest that the laser-bonded tissues heal faster, with less scarring." - Mark Trapp via Bookmarklet

America, we have a Muslim President, this is sin against the L-rd! Exodus 20:3

Kansas Preacher Pushes Obama Muslim Message WICHITA, KAN. — A Wichita, Kansas preacher says he will not remove a message on his church sign that says President-Elect Barack Obama is a Muslim. The sign is staying up despite the fact that Obama is a Christian. The sign at Spirit One Christian Center reads, “America we have a Muslim president. This is sin against the Lord.” Obama supporters reportedly got into a shouting match with parishioners outside the church on Sunday. - ♣genieyclo♣
Could it be that there are too many stupid people in America for it to survive as a functioning superpower? This thought crosses my mind often these days. In the nineties I felt like we were a highly educated nation, on the cutting edge of human progress. Then the wheels fell off with the turn of the millennium. - Sean McBride
I love the "Church Without Walls" part. It's so ironic. - Glenn Batuyong
Exodus 20:3 is part of the 10 commandments, it states "Thou shalt have no other god's before me". I can think of no way in which having a Muslim president (if that were even the case) would violate that commandment for any Christian. How sad that this is what things have come to. - Aaron Krug
Reason #... ah screw it. Like I actually need another reason to not go to Kansas... - Mark VandenBerg
How is being a muslim a sin against any just deity? This is the most stupid and ignorant sign I've seen in a long time. This sign is a sin against everything that America stands for and I don't even believe in sin... - Alex Scoble CISSP
Come on people. Do you need to see a sign like this to know that there are idiots everywhere and it's best to just ignore them? :) - Patricia
Muslims believe in the same G-d as do the Christians....it's very ironic. As is that they claim to to be a "Church Without Walls", as Glenn noted. - ♣genieyclo♣

The difference between our network here and this wall-less church is that we tend to think rationally. - Aaron Hood
Patricia -- to connect a few dots: Joseph Lieberman, who was just warmly embraced by the Democratic Party leadership, is a close political ally of a religious extremist who shares these views -- John Hagee. This cultural rot reaches to the highest levels of the American political system. The Republican Party, without much subtlety, encouraged this kind of thinking during the recent campaign. Something has gone seriously wrong in America since George W. Bush came to power. - Sean McBride
That sign is painful in so many ways... - xero
@Sean, I'm going to buy that book you told me about the next time I get to the book store. I think it's going to be an insightful read. Since the election, I've wanted to learn more about the government, what's going on. Thank you!!!! - Patricia

Some See Big Problem in Wisconsin Drinking - NYTimes.com

"When a 15-year-old comes into Wile-e’s bar looking for a cold beer, the bartender, Mike Whaley, is happy to serve it up — as long as a parent is there to give permission. “If they’re 15, 16, 17, it’s fine if they want to sit down and have a few beers,” said Mr. Whaley, who owns the tavern in this small town in southern Wisconsin. While it might raise some eyebrows in most of America, it is perfectly legal in Wisconsin. Minors can drink alcohol in a bar or restaurant in Wisconsin if they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who gives consent. While there is no state law setting a minimum age, bartenders can use their discretion in deciding whom to serve." - RAPatton via Bookmarklet
"Before he owned Wile-e’s, Mr. Whaley said there were some cases where he had to say no to a parent. “I’ve had situations where a parent was going to buy drinks for a kid who looked 8 or 10 years old,” he said, “and I had to say, ‘That’s a no-go.’ ” He also has a rule in his tavern that under-age drinkers must leave by 9 p.m. “When it gets later in the night, people don’t want a bunch of kids running around,” he said. One recent night, a lanky, blond-haired 17-year-old boy shot pool at the bar with his dad. Both were drinking soda. In Mr. Whaley’s view, the bar can be a suitable place for families to gather, especially when the beloved Green Bay Packers are on the television. “On game days, a buddy of mine will come to the bar with his 2-year-old, his 8-year-old and his 10-year-old,” Mr. Whaley said. “He might get a little drunk. But his wife just has a few cocktails. It’s no big deal. Everybody has a good time.”" - RAPatton
I'm all about that. I was sipping from my parents since I was a kid, and I don't get stupid drunk like others who didnt have their first drink til they were 18 or 21. - Shevonne Polastre

“Dear Akiva, learning some Asp.net makes it a TON easier getting through today's technical interviews.”
3 hours ago - Link
Instead of saying, "I'm really just a server guy, I don't really know all that stuff," you just answer their questions and satisfy their requirements. I'm not ever going to say again that I'm not really a web developer. I can do all that too now but I'm guessing most teams will find out that I know tons more about the server side... ("all that" not including design - I'll still say I'm not a designer). - Tad, Fool
Tad, I diigo'd all of those ASP.NET interview sites you posted awhile back and I have a huge book from SAMS (ASP.NET 3.5 Unleashed). I'm actually thinking of gravitating toward UI and away from the data layer. I'd rather do UI than SQL, I've decided. SQL makes me sad. - Akiva Moskovitz
Ultimately, I just wanna write code and solve problems. If that means coding an .aspx instead of a .cs then so be it. - Tad, Fool
Tad speaks wisely...that's exactly what I want to do...I certainly have preferences (there are days I can't stand HTML/JS, and days I can't stand WinForms)...but writing code and solving problems is the best part. - Jonas Bush
SELECT this, that FROM tblAkiva WHERE misery = true ORDER BY magnitude_level; - Josh Haley

Johnny, so do I! - Mark Wilson
Tad & Akiva - this is the exact move I made just over a year ago. I went from IT Manager (dealing with IT support, servers, etc) to Web Development. Best move I've ever made. - Justin Korn
I can't stand ASP, I'll have to get behind it soon though. I remain a PHP loyalist for the web, but I keep running into scaling problems. - Mo Kargas
Mo: I'm totally with you there...partly because I don't know ASP.net too :) - ♣genieyclo♣
ASP.NET is great, so long as you treat it like Classic ASP or PHP. - xero
Justin, I've been a C# developer forever. I did a little ASP.NET 1.0 but then got into the business and data layers and never looked back. But, over the past 2-3 years, I've gained a diabolical loathing for all things SQL so it looks like back to the UI I go. I'd prefer to do desktop clients but that's just not what the future seems to hold. I won't go so far as to get into Silverlight/Flash kind of things but ASP.NET? Sure, why not. - Akiva Moskovitz
