in the future everyone will be a curator for 15 minutes - http://www.nytimes.com/2009...
the new york times reports that "the word 'curate' - lofty and once rarely spoken outside exhibition corridors or British parishes, has become a fashionable code word among the aesthetically minded, who seem to paste it onto any activity that involves culling and selecting." - joh

The sorrow of the Netherlands: the murder of Pim Fortuyn - http://limpingmessenger.wordpress.com/200205-...
"The Dutch tend often to be well-informed about the fate of other nations, this does not work the other way round, because of language problems and the disinterest of many Dutch in communicating their own society to outsiders." from the blog of tjebbe van tijen, an excellent and erudite summing up of the rise and fall of fortuyn and dutch politics. van tijen is a legendary figure, an intellectual giant and a renaissance man, i knew him briefly in the late seventies. - joh

iam : information as material - http://www.informationasmaterial.com/
There is already enough material in the world and by working with extant material – by selecting and reframing – the artist is able to generate new meaning and, in doing so, disrupt the existing order of things. - joh

The work of George Orwell is still under copyright in the United States and the European Union, however under Australian copyright laws, copyright in literary works of Orwell and other authors who died before 1955, has expired. These works are now within the ‘public domain’ in Australia and this is why the University of Adelaide is able to make classics like Animal Farm and 1984 available for download on this site. - joh

Dana Stevens doesn't like the new Woody Allen film - http://www.slate.com/id...
Imagine if Annie Hall had been forgotten in a Ziploc bag under your couch cushions and left there for 30 years. By the time you pulled out the bag, Alvy Singer's endearing misanthropy would have decomposed into its constituent elements of vanity and contempt, and Annie's charming naiveté would have curdled into ditzy cuteness. The New York City that once seemed like a living, breathing entity would be a desiccated and barely recognizable skeleton. In short, you wouldn't be able to get the contents of that baggie to the trash can fast enough. That's basically the experience of watching Woody Allen's latest comedy, Whatever Works. - joh
