John Dupuis
Humanities and the Research Library (Academic Librarian) - http://blogs.princeton.edu/librari...
Interesting, but dodges the hard questions. What are we going to have to STOP DOING in order to do the new stuff? Because we ARE going to have to stop doing SOMETHING. There aren't enough resources in the world. - D0r0th34
I agree that Wayne didn't discuss what's falling off the to-do list. On the other hand he's not really addressing the issues in the context of one person's job, more in context of a whole library system. I'd be interested to hear what he has to say. Too bad he doesn't appear to be on FF...yet. - John Dupuis
The whole library system needs to stop doing stuff too. I know at MPOW there are discussions happening at high levels about what opportunities are opening now that people are retiring in large numbers from traditional jobs. - D0r0th34
And that's just from a collections point of view, never mind changing work flows in reference, instruction and all those other areas. - John Dupuis
Well, from my POV, I get cynical about posts like this because as a librarian working in a new area, I get damn-all help or support from librarians in general, non-technical librarians in particular, and humanities librarians ESPECIALLY. So until they get outta their comfort zone a little, I read such posts as this as "we don't have to change a bit! really! lalalalalala let the world fly by..." instead of "we've got some hard decisions to consider and some changes to make." - D0r0th34
We live in interesting times. It's obvious we have to do new things. It's not so obvious we have a consensus on the old things we need to leave behind (although I have some ideas). Any humanities librarians out there want to chip in? - John Dupuis
Totally agree with you, John D., and I have an in-progress blog musing that will tell you where some of my brain is on this. May go finish it now, but whew! tired from teaching like whoa. - D0r0th34
