Above all, the passage of the $700 Billion Paulson bailout shows how impotent our democracy has become -- left, right, and center. On the left, nothing demonstrates the failure of our politics and our media more than this Huffington Post page. - John Lockwood

"Well, I'm very glad to see that Bush finally has an opposition party, but as a Democrat I'm disappointed that they turned out to be the Republicans. And why shouldn't they have stepped into that void? Some 60-67% of Americans opposed this bailout. We keep losing elections, and when we win one, what do we do? Did the Congress we elected in 2006 to get our service people out of Iraq get that done? No. Did they impeach the Most Impeachable Ever, or did they let Kuccinich's articles rot on the vine? Now Bush proposes a hugely stupid and costly bailout, and the Democrats introduce a series of taxpayer "protections" that are cosmetic and palliative at best, showing themselves to be just as good a friend to Wall Street as any Republican (or as good a friend as Clinton when he signed Gramm-Leach-Bliley). How surreal can the political scene be when the Republicans are the populists and all the Democrats are crying because Wall Street didn't get their sugar!" - John Lockwood

If we're going to nationalize the banking system for $700 Billion, let's do it right. This plan -- which bills itself as dumb but not as dumb as Paulson's -- shows how to make $86.6 Billion per year so we pay back the taxpayers, finance enough home borrowing to make up for existing bank defaults, and reward the top 58% of American borrowers. - John Lockwood

Bush and Paulsen spend $800 Billion of your money over the weekend, while the Democratic majority in Congress naps and the press jots down some quick notes before going home for the weekend. - John Lockwood

Liberals, do you think Republicans have a lock on bad government? Well, mostly they do, but as this brief history of how we got into our current economic mess shows, we play catch-up pretty well! - John Lockwood

"They have interesting, well written articles written from a progressive point of view that's clearly popular with educated Americans online. Yes, some of echoes what you can find elsewhere, but I think its popularity is well warranted. Fox News for liberals is probably apt, but of course the liberals are the good guys." - John Lockwood
