I'll be there! :) - Kim Fong
*looks over at canoe*... If I start paddling now... - Johnny Worthington
Heh, that has to be the nerdiest thing ever. And what will you do at this Launch party? Install Windows 7? Oh, Bravo, Microsoft. Great marketing strategy. LET'S PARTAY AS THE LOADING BAR FILLS UP! OH WEWT! ...I bet it'll be a blast with Leo Laporte, though. :D I would totally go. But I'm in Kansas, where nothing happens, except the occasional tornado. Yee-frikin-haw. - Danny Minick

These days, if a news site makes me register or login before reading the article i just pass on it and move on.
or google cache - alex
Same - Zachary TG
Awesome. I'll read it for you then. - Merredith Branscombe
Ditto. Why put up barriers for others to see your cool content? Let them get a taste of it and maybe they'll subscribe after they realize they can't live without you. - Irene Koehler
Of course - Brendhan Givens
amen; you want my eyeballs they are there if no registration - wowfreeze.blogspot.com
Same goes for blogs that make you register before commenting - uhh, no thanks, I'll go where there's a real community. - Danny Brown
It's normally that - or a reverse-Turing test, and those are painful. - Tim Tyler
There's always bugmenot.com. - Jari Hakkarainen
Just google it: many online newspapers require to pay when you access the article directly or from their website but are free "from Google". Example: http://online.wsj.com/article... (link available on their homepage right now) vs. http://www.google.com/search... (click the first organic result). And those newspapers blame Google for stealing their content! Ah! - Jérôme Flipo
I avoid it but If I really need to read it than the above mentioned methods work fine. - ashish
Leo Laporte
My. That's interesting. iTunes 8.2 thinks my Pre is an iPod.
iTunes.jpg
LOL. - Zee.
Whoa! Omg Leo I can't wait to hear all about the Pre. - Lise
Welcome to the controversy :) - Bwana ☠
Unbuntu always thinks my HTC Diamond is an Ipod - Patrick Dwyer
Funny strange, Leo. Funny strange. - Callie
Heck Leo the iphone guys designed it to do that. I read it would be seemless. I wonder about any apple infringement? I'm sure they thought it through - Rock
anyone know when the pre comes to australia? - Bill Thomas
Looking forward to getting my Palm Pre - Dustin Sherrill
I wonder how long it will take Apple to send out an iTunes update to shut this down. My guess, two weeks at most. - Michael Groner
Oh that's awesome. - Bobby Lacey
It has to be a bug in the file. That's what I'm thinking. - Callie
Are you using Windows 7? I have heard a number of people mention this today but they were all using W7. - Nicholas Kreidberg
very interesting.. - victed
Sounds like the Pre has an identity crisis. ☺ - Jim Lecter
Now Leo I still maintain you recommended the Storm and I hope you don't do this to me again. Please. Don't get mad I just hang on your recommendations and just maybe I heard wrong. - Rock
Awesome... Wonder if Apple will have anything to say about this. - Jeff Matchett
Well it's supposed to. The USB identifier is the same as an iPod. - Dave Zawislak
Yes leo.. here's what's happening there http://bit.ly/YPUuP .. Engadget reported couple days ago http://bit.ly/B9lle - Divya Mistry
Leo were you already on live playing with the Pre? If not, come on live, I wanna see you testing it out live! - Lise
WOW....FriendFeed is awesome! - Anthony Campbell
Does the handset feel cheap? Every review I've seen so far said that the sliding mechanism felt loose. - Ryan Whitwam
rock: didnt leo strongly dislike the storm. - Anton Tanderup
I'm headed to the sprint store now and demanding one today. I know they have it in stock now. If I succeed I will let you know - Rock
That's probably a bad move on Palm's part. They should've done what other 3rd party players did get an ID instead of trying to pretend to be an iPod. I bet Apple could take legal action on this issue and win. - Mack McCoy
I bet this will last until the next system update from Apple :) - Bryan Lyle
Crazy - wonder if Apple is going to drop the hammer on this soon? Can Palm be sued under the DMCA for this? - Mike
Wow, Leo, welcome to last week's news: http://is.gd/Pxqp - John Callaback
I bet Apple reacts within a week - russellcoleman
Not at all Ryan. It feels great. Palm has hit a home run. I think there are some software flaws - it could be a tad more responsive - but those are easily fixed. I'm buying one tomorrow. - Leo Laporte
Leo, will you buy me one tomorrow? - Trad Robinson
Have heard other people say the same. The Pre Hack - Asgeir
OMG, you have a pre, Canada gets them tomorrow, so Ya!. - Zachary TG
Presumably this is only non-drm content (in particular no video from your itunes catalog)? - Dominic
On the Mac. I had read the news reports John, but I wanted to verify it with an actual Pre. Until then it's speculation. - Leo Laporte
This looks very exciting, but I still think 8gb/lack of expansion card slot will come back to haunt them. - charles
What do you think of the keyboard? - Matthew
I'm sure Leo will talk plenty about the Pre on Tomorrow's radio show. - Steven (optionshiftk)
Uh oh, I'm staying away from this one :) - jcunwired
I would stay away from an iTunes 8.3 update - Glenn Trtanj
I headed to buy one now I know they have them in the stores. You think they will cave if I make a big enough stink?? - Rock
Leo's buying a Pre tomorrow? OK, let's all wait a couple of weeks before buying - there's a secret Palm Pre 2.0 coming... ;) - Andy Bold
I agree let's wait at least 6 weeks after Leo has done a few shows on it. Since he is headed on Vacation again we have to wait. AHHHHHHHHHHH - Rock
Now I'm glad I didn't push that update just yet! - ryanmgeeks
Now I want a PrePod! - Kurt Carty
What Glenn said :) - Brett Kelly
Thats the link to a 3D spinning version of the Palm Pre - Rock
Leo you on live? Show us Show us C'mon - Rock
Apple fail? or PreFail? - Charles Naut
Charles it's an Apple Fail ;) - Nicholas James
Leo you have Paul Thurott on now... Get on line show us. - Rock
Nicholas. Disagree. How could this not be intellectual theft? All the Palm did was hire a hundred fifty Apple people. Rubenstein must've taken some magic Apple dust with him, too. I hope the lawyers don't give Palmista's too many nightmares. - Phil Boiarski
Looks like photos, unprotected music, and podcasts sync. Not Audible books. - Leo Laporte
I don't think an iTunes update is going to bork this. If iTunes is recognising iPods based on USB IDs, and the Pre is pushing an iPod USB ID for it's mass storage device, then iTunes updates won't be able to do anything about it without breaking compatibility with iPods that use this USB ID. Taking Palm to court, on the other hand, might do the same thing from a different direction. - Andy Bold
There's a PalmPre Unboxing on the schedule for 9pm (Pacific) tonight. - Matthew
ZOMG! I need a pre yesterday! - Ray
Playing with the SDK before getting to touch the device is all I can do at the moment. Poor me. - lisa padilla
lol - that's hilarious. wake up iTunes! - Jennifer
@Matthew, I think he unboxed it already, the time on the schedule is in UTC I think. - charles
correct... it was just before TWiF today... - Chris Heath
ahh, curse you time zones! - Matthew
Hate to intrude, but isn't Gillmor Gang supposed to be on right now? Since, like, half an hour ago? - Vlad Bobleanta
the schedule has The GG slotted for tomorrow at 3pm pacific - Chris Heath
Chris: Thanks, when I checked a few hours ago it was slotted today at 4:30 pacific. I checked again now and it has indeed changed. - Vlad Bobleanta
I still see it on 11:30pm UTC on the twit desktop app. - charles
charles, i'm still using the old v1.5 version of the twit live air app but it says tomorrow at 10utc - Chris Heath
Palm Pre looks pretty,i may have to buy one. thanks to leo :) - John
Old news. - Matt Ruiz
pre unboxing is rebroadcasting now - Matthew
Leo: Do you think the Palm Pre is going to be good competition against the iPhone? - Jason Hansen
With only 8GB's of storage, who cares if it syncs with iTunes. Not like I'd be using it as an iPod. - Jeff Self
Just thing of all the money apple can make from Palm Pre sales - Brian Cowie
I was able to get my hands on a Pre for an hour yesterday. As an iphone owner since day 1 I'm very impressed. It has all the glitz and glamour of the iphone with the 2.0 software. ( plus cut, copy and paste and the ability to run multiple apps. Oh yeah and a dedicated keyboard too. All the features worked really well, especially synergy. The calendar app on the Pre makes the iphones implementation look like a really bad try. - Micheal Weihrouch
that's pretty funny Leo! It looks like a great device. Can't wait too hear what you think about it. - Kevin M Lindow
Ahh...Assimilate. Well done Apple. - Mark Krynsky
Yea it is suppose to be able sync (for now) I think. I seem to remember reading something about it. - Shawn Snodgrass
The Pre USB hack also includes the fact it is made by Palm in the USB ID so it would be easy for Apple to block it. DVD John discovered how they did it - Iain
Maybe Apple bought out Palm... :P - Arnold
Oohhhh, Leo... If you can copy DRM free music to the Pre, is Palm condoning piracy?? ;) - Stan Augustyniewicz
Stan, DRM free music is music that doesn't have DRM (like the amazon store, the iTunes store since the recent change, and other music stores) Loe was just saying that his DRM music didn't transfer over to the Pre - Chris Heath
Hey, Leo, can you and/or the cottage crew do some sort of evaluation on Palm Pre battery life vs number of apps running in the background? - Stan Augustyniewicz from BuddyFeed
Yeah... I don't think Apple are going to let that one slide... - aminorjourney
*Your* Pre Leo? I thought you just had it on loan for review purposes for a week? - David Bradley

To people who say the new Friendfeed real-time feed is too fast: follow fewer people. Or use filters more. Real time = real life.
It's all about the filters ... but most people wont set them up. The system needs to be smart enough to know. - Jason Goldberg
To people who say I should follow fewer people: if I can have a conversation with one person in a stadium filled with tens of thousands, I should be able to do the same thing on a webservice where I follow only 1300. Not to mention using filters implies that I know today the interesting and compelling content that others will post tomorrow. Again, just how I use the service. Others may use it differently. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
We should be ab le to filter on the fly... that would help. - Wolfman-K
Following fewer people reduces the usefulness of the service. Filters might be a good way of handling things, but how do I know they aren't filtering out things that I'd actually want to see? - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
This is one of the things that's so appealing about the new FF: with filters, I can see in real-time the stuff I *want* to know about as soon as it happens, and peruse the rest as I feel like it. - Ryan Waldron
Real life.. I see that phrase often in games like WoW and RoM. I prefer the virtual version :) - Michele
I'm not sure I appreciate the added value of the beta design, particularly in light of the additional management and time it's going to take me to get it right. The current design has flaws (such as content updating out from underneath you when visiting a link) that are further amplified in the new design. There must be a way to address the update and management issues. - Loren Heiny
The new friendfeed is like talking on a party - to all people at the same time. I feel like a social juggler. - Dan van Moll
Loren: The link issue could be solved by Paul & co. stealing the Diggbar from under Kevin Rose's nose. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Perhaps they should add settings like Twitterfall has... - Cris McRae
I am still learning how to use it myself, but I training myself - Ike
What do you think about the new Friendfeed User Interface? See the poll: http://twtpoll.com/q68d2y - Yaron Orenstein
I've said it elsewhere, the more people you follow, the more of a need there is for filtering. It's not a preference, it's essential. It's true in Twitter, it's true in Friendfeed, it's true in email, it's true in Facebook. If you refuse to use the tools they have given you to manage the noise, then you have to deal with the it's design. That's your choice. - Bwana ☠
Just heard on Cnet BuzzOutLoud (http://bol.cnet.com/) that it may not be visible to everyone yet. See http://beta.friendfeed.com/ and see if you experience the new features. - Andy Pflueger
I'm pretty sure I don't have 300—let alone 3—people in real life constantly telling me every single thing they do and create in real time. ;) They send me an e-mail, a tweet, or I catch up on their activity in my Flickr contacts list on my own time. This is a very different and interesting shift for social media. - David Chartier
Mine's not moving fast at all. I suppose I wasn't using it to it's full capacity before... :-\ - David Wynn
Bwana: Filtering isn't the panacea you're making it out to be. There's a reason I follow the people and topics I do, and if I filter them out just to save some peace of mind, I might as well just unfollow them entirely. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Looking for a good filter tutorial link. Anyone? - Trevor Childs
Subscribe to Bwana he has some good filter examples. - Jared B. Luther
Yet another person who tells me that, in order to use FF, I need to change my behavior. - Glen, Bespectacled Elder
No way I'm following fewer people. The more I follow, the more fun I have here. So far, not too fast for me. We'll see tonight when it hits prime time. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Well, I still have lists and I can pause the updates, so I can use it however I like. It's definitely fun! I'll be using Friendfeed more, I'd wager, with the new interface. I actually feel less inundated, since I have nifty filtering. I'll be able to follow a lot more people! - jojo, adventurer
Jason Goldberg: "The system needs to be smart enough to know." Forget lists and filters. Smart automated recommender systems are the future of social media. Why isn't Friendfeed leading the way? - Sean McBride
Umm no, this is not real life. - Corvida
Since when is it the user's fault when the user interface doesn't work as expected? - Albert Willis
To people who say you should filter more for getting the real life: they should get out of their geek-holes and understand what it is to make choices for real life persons. :p - Ton Zijp
I think the beta is awesome. Looks great on my iPhone in landscape mode. - Steve Sill
i don't agree with the premise that because real time = real life folks should be able to keep up with their interests by scaling down their activity or number of people they happen to follow on a site like this. that's a nice simple thing to write, but it's certainly not practical if you're looking to interact with people on friendfeed. it's sites like these that afford all kinds of info to be exchanged among all kinds of people -- much more than in "real life." if the point of exchanging information lies - Cee Bee
How about having less followers? I don't understand this kind of maths really. If everyone starts following less people just to use a "tool", your own voice won't be noticed. I'll follow everyone I think he/she could bring more knowledge/fun to me and it'll be up to the tool to satisfy my needs, not the opposite - directeur
with a few people what's the point of being on a site like ff? - Cee Bee
There's a live back channel for the Gillmor Gang Leo's streaming right now at http://beta.friendfeed.com/stevegi... - Ken Sheppardson
Indeed, _very_ aggressive "hide" and "unsubscribe" are at least turning FF's "river of shit" UI a bit more palatable. - Dossy Shiobara
Don't make ME fix your problems. If it's too fast, it's too fast, and FF will have to live with the consequences. - Glen, Bespectacled Elder
In real-life, I don't have 1000 friends. And Leo, we're not friends in RL, right? - AJ Batac
I asked yesterday how anyone actually kept up with hundreds of people on twitter. Never got a response, so I figure people actually don't. - Barry Biddlecomb from twhirl
People mostly use Twitter as a bullhorn; I doubt that many feeds are being read very carefully. - Sean McBride
or just hit pause. it's not that big of a deal. you just hit refresh like you always have. - Nathan Chase
Agree with Tina. Filtering for topics implies a preset agenda of interests which makes it much less interesting. And if real life was so great more people would live there :-) - Todd Hoff
I didn't even know there are filters. They could make it easier to notice and use like put a filter button there on the page. Or explain that you can do that and how to do it. - Nathan Mylott
It's not a matter of telling you HOW to use something, it's a matter of telling what's available to help you DEAL with data overload. Lists and Filters are there to help consume the data in a manner which is pleasurable. It's not the only way to use FF, but it's something to ADD to your existing way of using the tool to make it better. I realize not everyone uses the tool like I do, but the features I talk about are there to HELP you manage the madness. - Bwana ☠
For example, not everyone uses labels in Gmail to manage their emails. But I've recommended some people use labels to organize the information and it has helped them. For others, it hasn't. The point remains, that labels are there to help with that and they are worth a try to see if it works. It's part of the toolset. Same is true with Lists and Filters on FF. They are there to help you. Give them a try. If they don't work, fine. Plenty of people have found they do work and that's why we say use it - Bwana ☠
Me, I have an "Everything" list so I can see all my followers... but sometimes, I need a break and I move to my other lists or fiilters to munch on those. I spend the most time in the Everything list though. My home feed consists of individuals who I have liked or commented on more than 50 or 60 times.. - Bwana ☠
I'm not sure following fewer is the best idea. The pause button puts the whole site back into static mode, i.e. what the old FF is. So just hit that. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
It's already gotten better, since yesterdays hype slowly went down. I'm quite happy with the (number of) followers now... It's manageable. - Holger Eilhard
Personally I can not see what all the hoopla is about. May be due to not following a hunndred people - Greg
I just started using it, and I love it so far.. I can now see what Leo and Steve were so excited about. - BASEnet
Liberal use of the "Hide" link works wonders to keep things clean. Also, adding ?num=100 to the end of the beta URL keeps things on the first page (thx Stupid Blogger/FFer (aka Tina)!) - Aaron Fowler
...And... Leo haven't commented here after 23 hours. Busy man. Busy man. - AJ Batac
I like how powerful the filtering is. - David Delony
just wish there was some type of sms capacity, like twitter - Steve Austin
Well Said Leo: "Real-Time = Real-Life" and I can't wait for Facebook and Twitter to get real! - Garin Kilpatrick
@Leo: real life is throwing up on your shoes, too. don't want that. - MikeAmundsen
