“Hey 30DC'ers! I've been slow keeping up with Wordpress Direct info and I'm wondering can you actually change all the imaging on their themes? I want to make use of its functionality that everyone is raving about, but have my own look that I want to implement on my blog... Cheers!”
September 22 at 8:35 am - Link
Yes you can if you keep the images the same size and names as in the images folder, and don't erase any of the copyrighted text (encrypted). You will probably want to change the colours in the style.css file to your preference too (#123456) - Mark McGimpsey
I think what you mean is the theme... In that case you just need to find yourself a widget enabled theme for wordpress. Upload it and enable it and your good to go. - John W. Serra

do you mean wordpressdirect? - Roy Gould
confused... are you running on your own server or using wordpress direct... for a stand alone wordpress - you need the wordpress download http://www.wordpress.org/lates... for starter which will have an index.php - Rob Wilson via Alert Thingy
Are you trying to do it yourself, or through WordpressDirect? It sounds kind of like your on your own... If you can give us a little more information, maybe we can give you a helping hand. For instance... Windows/linux hosting?, ftp app used, etc. If your using WordpressDirect, again where are you hosting it? - John W. Serra
Here is the scoop! Sorry didnt' give details first time using FriendFeed and wasn't actually expecting anyone to respond. - Michael Roberts
Using Windows based operating system. (Vista). I will be hosting the site my self using Hostgator. I have a reseller account. - Michael Roberts
I follow their instructions on the Wordpress Direct site to upload the new website. 1. I type in my domain name and make sure I can get to the "index of" page. Everything is fine. The DNS is all correct. (I bought the site from register.com) 2. I choose a template from wordpressdirect and click upload now. 3. I enter the correct ftp username and password. type in the correct URL, etc. 4. I upload the site. - Michael Roberts
If you goto www.wiigolfgames.com you will see the two errors it is telling me. - Michael Roberts
Have you filed a ticket with WPD? - Roy Gould
Yes, I filed a ticket with them but they have not gotten back to me...I was just curios if I was doing something obviously retarded? - Michael Roberts
One possible reason might be DNS propagation. When you buy a domain and it is first pointed towards your hosting account, it takes 24 - 36 hours before the 'pointing' is recognised properly across the internet. Any time thereafter if you do a DNS redirect with your domain and point the domain to new servers, the same delay kicks in again. During this time it is difficult to reach your site by typing the domain name into your browser, unless you use the special numerical format usually sent - Mark McGimpsey
to you by email by your host provider in a response email to your purchase. In my own case with a recently pointed domain, I had WPD correctly install the domain, only for it to stop working shortly afterwards because the domain was re-targeting the old host files location. The domain alternated between the new and old locations on and off for almost a day, and of course each time WPD would stop working because it couldn't reach the correct hosting account. It's possible all your installation files might - Mark McGimpsey
not have been uploaded correctly. - Mark McGimpsey
I appreciate your input Mark, I will try erasing my website in WHM and then recreate it...(this way it will have all the files I need on there and all the junk I tried uploading will be gone) I will then re type in the DNS redirects...and then i won't touch my site until Monday. This should give it the time it needs to propagate. Then will try to upload from WordpressDirect on Monday. This sound like a decent plan of attack? - Michael Roberts
One more thing which might help is a site www.theproxyfree.com - where you can type in your domain name. Sometimes it is possible to see your domain correctly targeting your hosting files, when you are having difficulty reaching it otherwise. (It also bypasses site restrictions on your firms office computer). I've used it to check when I've experienced difficulty as outlined previously. You can also use it to check if your Router cache needs cleared. Sometimes Routers give problems too and need to be - Mark McGimpsey
switched off for a few minutes and turned back on. Sometimes you may even need to 'reset' your router and re-enter your security details, and they can get file corruption if on constantly for a year or more. I've had to do that once when it stopped allowing one of my computers access for no particular reason. You only need the DNS redirects if your host provider and domain registrar are different companies i.e you buy the domain from GoDaddy and your are hosted with HostGator. - Mark McGimpsey
Alright Mark, I appreciate your input. I will give it all a try...since WordPressDirect was just mainly confused by my ticket and told me to try again. =P Will wait 24hours and try again tom. - Michael Roberts
For what it's worth, Michael, I had trouble with my WPD blog at one point and when WPD could not help (they did try), I contacted Hostgator via their tech chat and they were incredibly helpful...they fixed my problem. I am not technically inclined in this regard so didn't care WHY or WHAT happened, only that it was fixed. I've not had a problem since. Seems it was a glitch that required fixing. Good luck. - Sue Dyson

I don't think it is about what more they can from us, they already do a pretty good job on that. IMHO, it is just a new, fun way to publish an RFC, and get people thinking about the direction they would like the browsers to take. Maybe it will turn into Firefox 4.0 or something... - John W. Serra

I would say, you should stay away - if the top 10 is already dominated by web 2.0 properties you'll have trouble competing. Because you're using the same techniques as these guys who got into the top 10 - many of them are probably 30DCers! I would not go after that phrase. - Elisa Gopin
It's either a war between the top two sites, or a dud phrase. Checkout the keywords that the ezarticles link to, because that's probably where the traffic really is. - Andy Roberts

No, I haven't. Sorry. - Marysia
I have only had a problem a few times, mostly due to network timeouts dealing with Amazon's S3 and my networks. I did use wget in a console, or terminal window. Just copy the link from the web page for the SD or HD version and then in a terminal window type "wget http://link.to/file" and you should be fine. Wget manages longer stalls better than a browser will. You could even try "wget --tries=0 --continue http://link.to/file" to make sure it keeps trying and always continues from where it dropped off... - John W. Serra
Thanks John will give that a try. - Marc

You may have to go into Global config, turn off your editor, go back into mod and paste the code again. The internal editors sometimes whack out the code - or if you're brave, pop into the database itself w/ phpMyAdmin and paste it there. You may want to 'check out' that mod to ensure you remember not to mess with it once your editor is turned back on. - Cheryl Allin
