Allen, I don't disagree with your FF comment, however people are already moving to other services, so Twitter could well eventually die. Growing chunks of my Australian Twitter friends are on Plurk now for example. PS: love the headline, couldn't have written it better myself. - Duncan Riley
probably i have a smaller group of friends, but they predominantly use twitter from the web page maybe two, three times a day. not sure they see the outages to the extent that this crowd does and they certainly aren't looking at substitute services. it has been quite difficult moving them to friendfeed - too much noise is what i hear. - rob zand
nice post. Bottom line is twitter is not working and folks are going to migrate to a service that works best for them. - Richard
Leo, I think you could really make a strong push for people moving to FF. - Ryan Cates
I've thrown myself on those rocks before. I keep wondering how long before people start wandering away from Twitter. I've gradually phased it out and phased in FF myself. But I still use Twitter to broadcast - I have 6x the followers there. The two are really symbiotes. - Leo Laporte
I like the support for attached images very much! - Fu_
symbiotes. i like that. mutually beneficial. totally agree Leo. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I've wandered away from Twitter. They've could have rebuilt it from scratch by now. What gives? - Dan Lovejoy
We need to crowd source the TWiTnation for something on the Mac to bring our Twitter follows over to FF. - Ryan Cates
Does it get a little full then breaks, making it useless? - Vince DeGeorge
Well played, Vince DeGeorge... well played! :) - Bill Sodeman
Reminds me of a ceramic stein of another Fail. My commemorative Time Magazine give-away mug: microwaving it causes only the mug to heat up, thus kindly protecting the liquid from temperature shift. Worth every penny I didn't spend on it. - Micah Wittman
“If FRICKIN' people would just FRICKIN' stop sharing FRICKIN' files and downloading pirated warez, they would FRICKIN' stop getting infected with FRICKIN' viruses, trojans, RIck Astley, spyware, etc. Christ.”
Useful advice as I try to make FF my new Twitter. There's lots to understand about the FF interface. Anyone else have any "secret" tips/? - Leo Laporte
I can't seem to find it, but there's a Windows Twitter to FriendFeed converter script that will send invites to all your Twitter friends to subscribe to your FriendFeed. - Jesse Stay via twhirl
Jesse: Not sure about the script you're referring to but this script - http://internetducttape.com/20... - will add your Twitter friends to FF. I've been meaning to run it but haven't yet. I'll do it tonight and report back. - Leo Laporte
That's cool Bwana - for iPhone users - anyone have a Blackberry FF client? - Leo Laporte
Leo, here's another handy Greasemonkey script for filtering your FF stream by service http://snurl.com/2en81 e.g. view only Flickr, view only Tumblr, etc. - Mike Doeff
@Leo, http://fftogo.com is a decent friendfeed blackberry client. I do not use it much but it is way better anything else I have seen. - Rob Diana
Leo: fftogo works well on the blackberry (so I've heard) but you need to change your font size in fftogo (scroll to the bottom and click on settings). I'm the developer for fftogo so if you want any improvements I'm your man. - Benjamin Golub via fftogo
So it does, Benjamin - but I hate going to the BB browser. What font size works best? Trying 9 right now. - Leo Laporte
I'm not sure since I don't have a BB but I've heard that the default (which works great on my Moto Q9c) is way too big on the BB. - Benjamin Golub
@bgolub thanks for implementing font size :) - Alex Gawley
Just joining FF, it's different but it does seem nice and simple =) - John Tyra
Lots of folks who have not used the "hide" feature have not seen the options available. I love the g-monkey script tabs, but hey -- why not also try what's already here. BTW, here's Duncan Riley's great index of FF tabs: http://userscripts.org/users/5... - Dan Covington
This post has helped me to understand FriendFeed better than anything else I've read. Thanks. - Larry Huffman
Good, common-sensical ways to be relevant and get the most from FriendFeed - Ron Emrick via Alert Thingy
Font size change helps on BB Pearl. Tks! - Tom via fftogo
Don't care. Buying 3G iPhone. Drooling just thinking about it. - Cyndy
Let's see, he's talking about a 1st generation phone from a company that has NEVER made a phone before the iPhone. With that in mind, they've completely blown away the competition. For my purposes, the iPhone is near perfect. They have completely embarrassed phone makers that have been around for ages and the entire market is caught reacting to Apple. - Vince DeGeorge
LOVE my 1st generation iPhone, and regardless of the phone itself anyone who is an avid iPod user will love it for anything but sending e-mail. being able to carry around fewer gadgets and actually being able to answer a call when you're listening to music are nice bonuses. I'm not sure yet if I am going to wait and see what people think about 3G speeds or upgrade immediately. - Robert Seidman
Vince I do agree that Apple in many ways has changed the landscape. They did it mostly with the I software that came along. But the iPhone isn't as enthusiastic received within parts of Europe or Asia. People over there are so used to seeing the latest technology in GSMs that it is hard to impress them. South Korea and Japan are approx 3yrs ahead of the rest of the world. @Chris the points I make aren't a dealbreaker either (I bought one), but I think that is an area where the iPhone could improve. - Alexander van Elsas
A phone with a real QWERTY keyboard is a better "Mobile Computer" than the iPhone. I'm waiting for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1: http://gs.readle.net/?cx=00279... - Svartling
@Phil @Susan We were going to get at least one for the husband when they came out, but the lack of 3G was a dealbreaker. Cool as it is, it makes no sense to have cool when my little RAZR is way faster. We've been waiting for them to do this for a YEAR, but we don't have a budget that allows for willy nilly replacement every time Steve gets a wild hair to do something. ;) - Cyndy
Cyndy - When the first iPhone came out, I had just added my wife to my T-Mobile plan and my 2-year contract on my SK3 was only halfway up. I should be in a much better position when the G3 version comes out. - J. Phil
@J. Phil Do you want to know how bad we've been about waiting? When the kids killed my RAZR last year, I paid without the subsidy to replace so I could stay month-to-month. It's demented. - Cyndy
re:qik - it seems to work just fine at least on Nokia E51... :) - robert
NIce top ten some good selections there i really like the look of dropbox ill have to check it out.. will it replace my .mac account or is dropbox better for sharing with several people rather then keeping my Macs synced - John Spencer
Yeah Derek. You don't think it's up and coming? - Veronica
tried pownce; very nice interface. But it turned out I wasn't using it compared to Twitter, Friendfeed, Facebook. - Daniel Robitaille
@Veronica, your entry is a nice list of up-and-coming web apps. Yet I was a bit confused when you listed pownce... I was under the impression that it does not inspire web 2.* like the others in you're run-down. - Czar Derek Peterman
What are these charts for? and what do they mean? - directeur
@directeur It shows people that Like the same things I do on FriendFeed, in proportion - Shey
@Shey: Ah ok, I see... well it's a social thingy... I have to admit it :) I humbly think that all this should stop one day... Am I wrong? :) - directeur
I think I see your point. Personally I think it's all great, I'm not in a competition or trying to be better than anyone, I just like being social. - Shey
@Shey: No, no I didn't meant that you were in competition at all ! I meant that the wisdom of crowds isn't necesserly the real value of "truth"... I love to socialize too but I hate it when this "game" is pushed to the limits. Look at digg for eg. It became so chlidish that I hated it. See what I mean? :) - directeur
Yay! I'm not on this one!!!! oh, sorry shey :) - Anthony Farrior
Well, at least I know I'm somewhere there in the "others"... ;) - Vince DeGeorge
And oh yes, I just proposed an anti-feature for FF in the FF-feadback room about this :) - directeur
this chart is crap! I should be on yours! I like (or I *think* I like all your stuff!) LOL - Susan Beebe
lol@Susan *shrug* I don't make up the numbers :( - Shey
Susan: This chart was generated off very recent stuff (unlike the longer table). My #2 & #4 (on the new chart, not the long table) were names I'm just beginning to notice, and #3 is someone I totally didn't notice until Felix's Javascript. 5 of my top 10 (on the chart) are people I didn't know before 3 days ago. On my longer list, there's 1 out of the top 10 I don't recognize - mhmazidi - Mitchell Tsai
That is a good point Mitchell, I forgot that - Shey
Figured out why mhmazidi is on my Top 10 (35 likes), and didn't look familiar... I've been "liking" Persian Cam photos, but absolutely zero of his/her own posts. - Mitchell Tsai
Oh, cmon, she's a little stringy, but she doesn't look like a horse. I'd like to meet her just so I can give her a double cheeseburger, some tater tots, and a chocolate shake. That being said, I'm ashamed at how much this made me laugh. - Harvey Simmons
i don't think they look that similar.. the social media movie star thing on the other hand though... dead on - Tyler
I just realized that there is an entire web site behind this: sarahjessicaparkerlookslikeahorse.com - Mike Doeff
Actually, the funniest part lies in the (fake) "ads by Google" selection you get when you go to the web site: The Sexy City Laser Mole Removal, Old Hag Varicose Veins Treatment, City Botox Injections for Aging Hipsters, Over 40 and Your Career is Shot? - Pierre-Philippe Martin
I'm sure I remember a Weebl and Bob episode that featured a perfume named "horseface". Can't seem to find it now though. - Slippy Lane
I love Sarah Jessica Parker (I admire her for being "herself" and not getting a nose job). My husband *hates* her character on SATC. It's more of a reflection of the Carrie Bradshaw character's shallow self-centeredness than how SJP looks in real life. However, if someone had a site gingermakelalookslikearat.com I'd probably be hurt. - Ginger Makela
This site is moderately funny at best. I really am not a fan of finding a persons physical flaws then exploiting and mocking them for the enjoyment of others. It feels far too Junior High for my liking (think Mean Girls). In this age of preteen dieting and sweet 16 nose jobs, sites like this send a terrible message. - Erica Baker
That's wrong. Everyone knows she looks like a foot. (Family Guy) - Cecily Walker
Given, this is a bit mean. But the movie sucks, tho. - Rubin via twhirl
@Sprague So shes not conventionally attractive (for the record, I think shes got a great smile), should that warrant mockery? Do we blame her for playing the role of a fashionista/writer because she wouldn't go out and become conventionally attractive for the part? Should someone more "conventionally attractive" be cast as Carrie Bradshaw? - Erica Baker
I want to hide this conversation. I should hide this conversation. It's just too funny. Is there a 12-step program for this? I need help. - Harvey Simmons via fftogo
We see a lot of stars go completely mental and it's no wonder. They work in a damned if you do, damned if you don't industry. If they don't conform, they get made fun of and if they attempt to conform, it gets blasted all over Us Weekly. - Erica Baker
Erica, in my perfect world, nobody would've been cast as Carrie Bradshaw, because Carrie Bradshaw wouldn't exist. - Cecily Walker
oh that is just ugly...funny...but ugly...LOL - Ruth Ferguson
@Erika: I *hate* it when random people are mocked for their looks... especially if it's directed *at* the individual. But people who have made it their business to exist in the public eye and --as @Sprague pointed out-- have allowed themselves to be marketed as some sort of standard of beauty and style... well, that's a little different. If you don't want people discussing your looks, don't spend your life in front of cameras. - Roger Benningfield
