In the market for a new bag after wife broke the latch on my old one. Which would you choose? Or customize your own here: http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2...
I have the second one, but with the center panel gray. I prefer blue so that'd be my preference. The green and dull red looks pretty neat though.
- Arlan K.
The blue one is probably the brightest overall that I'd like. I generally like more subdued colors on my bags so currently it's a toss up between the green and red.
- ronin
I might just bite the bullet one day and do it. Or just play around with the existing photo gallery templates for WP to see if there's anything comparable.

iPhone/iPad apps really need an option for limited trials. I hate having bought something for more than $3 and then decided it wasn't what I really wanted with no way for a refund. :(
This has been a gotcha with computer software for ages. Often the only solution was pirate several programs to try them out, before actually buying one.
- Mike Chelen
Sometimes there is a limited free version (a lot of games do this, giving you the first level or something for free), but yeah, I think more of them should. I tend not to buy any that I haven't read reviews of somewhere online. Not just, like, iTunes reviews, but blog reviews somewhere.
- Jandy
It's mostly a matter of risk. I find getting $1 and $2 apps are like potato chips (hard to resist just one), but when they're $5 and up (especially $10 or more) it's a lot more of a risk as to whether I want to make that investment if it ends up not suiting my needs. Since fewer people buy those apps anyway there are fewer reviews and ratings to choose from. Also, since I'm paying more...

- Lindsay
Apple will refund if you are not satisfied. I have done it couple of times and now I am usually very careful when I am buying any paid apps.
- Ashish
I agree with you Lindsay. I would think that having a trial option, especially on more costly apps, would actually help generate more revenue for the developers in the long run. Unless you know that your app is a piece of crap and are just trying to make money quickly before everyone catches on.
- Jim #TeamMonique
Unfortunately, I think that timed trials is actually against the App Store's Agreement. i recall having many discussions with other developers and run into the same issue. There are a could semi-solutions available, the obvious "Lite" limited functionality app is the most popular option, ad-based free version then a paid ad-free version, and finally, the Remember the Milk option, where...

Of course, Bindu. One of the fun things about MyLikes is you get to choose the product and message. Nothing goes out without your approval and hitting the button. I appreciate that for sure.

Isn't MobileMe cloud too? A bit confused. I have both, I haven't migrated, but I'm set up on Google Apps and a MobileMe account.
- John Wang
John, yes, in theory, MobileMe is all cloud, so I could have worded that better. But almost all my mail is stored locally still from years of archives. That's probably what WoH is referring to.
- Louis Gray
So not a launch just a preview - Zzzzzzz. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
new features and tools are nice, but i don't see myself using them. more curious to see the performance upgrade since everything is now supposedly 64bit.
- John Wang
Yes, but Facebook isn't an Apple property.
- Roberto Bonini
What about Kevin Fox Ultimate? When do we get that?
- Jesse Stay
Probably not, but it's up to Facebook to defend its own trademark. I'm sure if a complaint is filed, even if it were a third-party complaint about confusion, it'd get pulled.
- Mark Trapp
My point excactly. apple would reject such an app becuase itsw defending its own trademark. Clearly in the case of this app here facebook hasn't, or has yet, to file an objection.
- Roberto Bonini
@Victor, never? He's not working on the iPhone or iPad version for Facebook. He left that position a long time ago. There's other facebook developers who are actively working on those projects though.
- John Wang
@John Wang - I forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder.
- Victor Panlilio
Looks like it's been removed. Gizmodo went to town on how bad it was; good riddance.
- Mark Trapp
The developer disagrees actually: http://www.allfacebook.com/2010... Frankly, I agree with her. This is a crap situation for a developer to get put in, and the result only showcases why nobody should be creating iPhone and iPad apps: In a closed ecosystem, you're at the mercy of those people who keep it closed.
- Otto
This really has nothing to do with the App Store policy: she violated Facebook's trademark, which is governed by federal law. Calling it anything else would not have resulted in the same outcome. Edit: it's also against Facebook's developer agreement: http://developers.facebook.com/policy...
- Mark Trapp
@Mark: So are you suggesting there are NO apps on the App Store that use the word "Facebook" in their names? Such a policy should be applied correctly, or not at all. If ALL apps with "Facebook" in the name (other than the official ones) got removed, then I'd agree with you. But that didn't happen.
- Otto
It's not a policy, it's a law. Trademark law requires trademark holders to defend their marks or risk losing them. It's up to the trademark holder to file a complaint to defend their mark. If you want to blame someone besides the developer, blame Facebook for selectively defending their mark.
- Mark Trapp
It's also pretty clear in Facebook's terms that using "Facebook" or "Face" in the name of the App is a no-no. That has been the case for a long time now.
- Jesse Stay
Trademark law requires no such thing, and I really wish people would stop repeating that old, and incorrect, conclusion. You can lose the rights to your trademark through *dilution*, but nowhere are you required to file complaints or to defend your trademark. You are required to POLICE your trademark and prevent *incorrect* usage only. The danger is your mark becoming generic, like...
- Otto
I wish people would stop trotting out incorrect defenses of trademark violations. Trademark law does not allow your interpretation of the law. There is no non-nominatave fair use to trademarks outside the bounds of protected speech like criticism. To argue that somehow this developer was in her right to use the Facebook mark as part of her name is so ludicrous it's annoying.
- Mark Trapp
Again, trademark is beside the point. It's Facebook's own policy so if Developers want to access Facebook API they need to respect that. Apple also has similar policies surrounding developers use of Trademarked terms, whether they are truly legally in violation or not.
- Jesse Stay
Congratulations :) I'll have to come visit you next time I'm in LA!

Congrats on MySpace! Los Angeles has "Al Gelato" - IMO best ice cream on the west coast... My MySpace is http://www.myspace.com/mitchel... I mostly use it to connect with musician friends. Especially East Coast (NYC) musicians who all have MySpace pages.

congrats and welcome to LA! FF meet up?

Time to give youngsters/musicians some distributed liberties: better API and widgets, 2-way openid, better integration with soundcloud etc. Go for it, Mona. You can libreate the next generation (and I didn't say facebook even once ;) )

For sure! I'm on my way to Sx though. Oh and another problem: I have no car!

Congrats, Mona! Sounds like a great gig and glad you are seizing the opportunity!

Congrats Mona! on the move and jumping into MySpace, seems like the beginning of a challenging & fun adventure for you. If anyone can bring teams closer it's definitely you (MS, FF, FB :-)
- Majento
no car? this is the wrong city for that. but I'm sure we could still work something out.
- chrisofspades
Congratulations, Mona! I feel dizzy following your moves - seems something like Bay Area ==> New York ==> Seattle ==> L.A since I first joined Friendfeed and found your ultra caffeinated scrolling video ... http://pixelbits.wordpress.com/2008...
- Laura Norvig
Congrats Mona!!!! This is awesome for you!
- John Wang
I lived in Santa Monica without a car for 3 years. The Blue Bus is very convenient, and I rode my bike everywhere. Rented a car for the weekend if I really needed it.

Is there some way to add more notification tones to your iPhone? I figured out how to add ringtones, but there's such a limited number of the ones you can use for notifications (and I don't really like any of them).
Sure miss the G1's ability to use any MP3 for any ringtone or notification... Not sure why that's such a hard ting to do on the iPhone... And what's the deal with the 40 second limitation on ringtones and all the rigmarole you have to go through with iTunes to make them? Bleh.
- Lindsay
I would like that functionality too. I was able to customize that on my little Razr way back when. seems it should be a given.
- holly #ravingfangirl
Not with a stock iPhone. If you *cough* jailbreak *cough* you can though.
- Sparky, lurking
one of my pet peeves about my iphone... afaik you have to jailbreak to do it so i haven't
- Chris Heath
I think notifications have to be set by the app developer if they want a custom sound. at least that's what the SDK told me when 3.0 OS came out with Push Notifications.
- John Wang
It's a pain, but it is doable. have to jailbreak, get ssh access to the phone, rename your new ringtone saved in a specific format to the old ringtone name, then use a 3rd party hack app from Cydia that allows skins ad ringtone changing THEN yes, you can. I did it once it was cool and all, but then when updates came and I would have to do it all over again? nah. but at least I know it is possible.
- Josh Haley
from iPhone
That's true for 3rd party apps John. I assumed she was talking about email/SMS notifications.
- Sparky, lurking
Geeze, what ridiculousness! Sigh... should have got the NexusOne. Guess I'll go play Peggle to cheer myself up.
- Lindsay
If you have Garageband you can create your own ringtones. Can't change notifications, though. :( I'm surprised you got an iPhone, Lindsay. Now that you got one, you can get this! http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Arlan K.
Arlan, Tad made me do it. But, dang, that's an awesome app... I think I may have to have it! Edit - Wow! That only costs $3! What a no-brainer!
- Lindsay
Dang it, Arlan. I want to play with Sketchbook but I have to go to bed. :( Oh well, tomorrow then!
- Lindsay
You two got it? I think it's worth every penny. I've been bouncing between sketching and tracing. It's amazing what others have done (sketchbook mobile Flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups...).
- Arlan K.
from iPhone
Higher build quality (sturdier), better system bus, faster processor, screen with a glass cover rather than plastic, longer battery life, more configuration options, etc. This is one case where the extra $200 doesn't have any one big thing to justify it, but tons and tons of little enhancements which are really worth it. That being said the MBP line is supposedly revving in 1-3 weeks so wait if you can.
- Sparky, lurking
Hmm, really wanted to get it before I go to Atlanta which is in exactly three weeks!
- Laura Norvig
Another major difference is the ability to run 64-bit applications on the MacBook Pro. Won't affect most Mac users, though.
- Julian
When you get a new one does it automatically come with iLife?
- Laura Norvig
power. you can never have too much power.
- Juho Tunkelo
Yes. They all come with iLife. But not iWork.
- John Wang
from iPhone
A MacBook running Snow Leopard runs the same 64-bits apps as a MBP running Snow Leopard. The biggest difference is the build quality. The aluminium body feels more sturdy than that of the platstic MacBook. Also, the MacBook Pro is 0.5KG~ lighter.
