Everything you need to know about HIP, a hacker festival in the Netherlands which took place on the 8th, 9th and 10th of August 1997. - I wonder where my images from this event are... - Joi Ito
Holidays occur during all weekends, starting on Thursday night at midnight and continuing until early Tuesday morning. During a holiday, emissaries from that Battleground will be found in the major cities, and honor/faction rewards for performing objectives in that battleground are increased. - Joi Ito
@Cains, there is a difference in Ramadan. Dubai is too small to be broken down into tourist areas. @Joi, Ramadan comes with its rules and Dubai, being a muslim city, enforces them on the public during fasting hours from sunrise to sunset. 1) No eating or drinking in public places (even if you're really hot in the car, you shouldn't reach for water and drink it). 2) Most (90%) restaurants are closed from sunrise to sunset. 3) No alcohol is sold throughout the month (even in hotels). Ask Google for more. - Mo Jawhari
I thought basically the Burj Al Arab and surrounding area remained the same? - Cains
It might actually be interesting to observe the fast. Will people still be available to meet? I assume restaurants are open at night then right? - Joi Ito
I was in Pakistan once during Ramadan. Everybody was grumpy and tired all the time during the day. - Rebecca MacKinnon via twhirl
Yes, restaurants open around 6pm. You'll actually find indoor restaurants in hotels do remain open during the day. It's considered rude to eat/drink in public during the daytime and could land you in trouble. But apart from that, business as usual. - Cains
Yes. My daughter did it and didn't even get to eat during the day - Francine Hardaway
I don't know but wouldn't recommend if you don't have some food stored at backpack etc. (and you are eating it somewhere inside). ;) - Daniel Schildt
The federal appeals court in Washington said that just because a software programmer gave his work away did not mean it could not be protected. - Joi Ito
Fantastic! Flickr? Also, why do you think the okra are so large? My sunflowers have done fantastically well even potted and in a New York summer. - joshua fouts
I should photograph them. I will when I get back. I have no idea whether its a different kind or maybe the crazy compost I've been feeding the soil. - Joi Ito
agreed. needing to create pdfs to use slideshare from keynote is a frustrating loss of fidelity. - Nate Koechley
Yeah... everyone says I can just convert to PPT or PDF but my fonts and backgrounds often get screwed up when I upload to slideshare for some reason - Joi Ito via twhirl
The problem with avoiding conflict of interest is that there has to be both the appearance of lack of conflict as well as actuality. From what you said the actuality part you can/have managed. The appearance part not so much. I think you have a problem since from what you say your investments in the same realm as your CC duties. Not sure what you can do about it though -- maybe declare your investments publicly, completely and keep the declaration current? - Brian Sullivan
I really thought this was important and am disappointed that after asking such a question at least in FF Joi is not engaged in a conversation(nor is anyone else for that matter). Was the question mostly rhetorical? - Brian Sullivan
There are only two comments in response on his original blogpost, which seem to support your comment, Brian. I don't think this is that big of a deal, especially since Joi is disclosing it. As one of the commenters on his blog stated, the board of CC would not likely have offered him the job had there been a conflict. Meanwhile check out his new book! http://www.boingboing.net/2008... - joshua fouts
As far as I can see he has disclosed nothing. I think this is an issue not only for the CC board though. I think those affected have a right to know as well - which would include everybody that licenses material under cc. (BTW from what I can see Joi Ito is personally above reproach but that is not the point) - Brian Sullivan
Poking a little further I see that Joi has disclosed all of his investments and assuming the wiki nature of the location implies that he is updating it regularly -- I am not sure what more he could do other than perhaps reveal the size of the investments (pretty sensitive info though) - Brian Sullivan
Brian, I've been replying to the comments on my blog...but I don't know how I can engage in a conversation unless people ask questions. ;-) The general size of the investments is disclosed in my conflict of interests statement at CC which I think is probably publicly available... maybe through the 990 filing. I can find out if anyone is interest. Basically, CC and most organizations separate "material interests" and others. Material usually means some sort of management control or 5% stakes, etc. - Joi Ito

Why? Pushbach? Admitted cotporatist overreach or visible consumer opposition? Failure of DRM? There is current push in Conhress to pishbthrough more strinhent copyright & trademark protection mechanisms - tax-payer fund too? Observations of actual fair use-like services? Very curious. - Scott Moskowitz
Well legal exceptions are written into law in a process driven by bureaucrats vs fair use, which is fought in court. I would say courts are less vulnerable to lobbying. - Joi Ito via twhirl
I do wish the old Boucher amendment I advocated during LoC DMCA comments way back in Nov 2000 did get legislated ... Thanks for the reply! - Scott Moskowitz
