Holy murrow! In theory, a 250mph zero emission Formula Zero Racer. Energy comes from an electro-conductive polymer in the surface of the roadway. The polymer generates electricity from solar panels along the road. The car's tires pick up the energy from the road surface while being spun by electric motors on each wheel. - xero via Bookmarklet

Instead of saying, "I'm really just a server guy, I don't really know all that stuff," you just answer their questions and satisfy their requirements. I'm not ever going to say again that I'm not really a web developer. I can do all that too now but I'm guessing most teams will find out that I know tons more about the server side... ("all that" not including design - I'll still say I'm not a designer). - Tad, Fool
Tad, I diigo'd all of those ASP.NET interview sites you posted awhile back and I have a huge book from SAMS (ASP.NET 3.5 Unleashed). I'm actually thinking of gravitating toward UI and away from the data layer. I'd rather do UI than SQL, I've decided. SQL makes me sad. - Akiva Moskovitz
Ultimately, I just wanna write code and solve problems. If that means coding an .aspx instead of a .cs then so be it. - Tad, Fool
Tad speaks wisely...that's exactly what I want to do...I certainly have preferences (there are days I can't stand HTML/JS, and days I can't stand WinForms)...but writing code and solving problems is the best part. - Jonas Bush

Tad & Akiva - this is the exact move I made just over a year ago. I went from IT Manager (dealing with IT support, servers, etc) to Web Development. Best move I've ever made. - Justin Korn
I can't stand ASP, I'll have to get behind it soon though. I remain a PHP loyalist for the web, but I keep running into scaling problems. - Mo Kargas
Mo: I'm totally with you there...partly because I don't know ASP.net too :) - ♣genieyclo♣
ASP.NET is great, so long as you treat it like Classic ASP or PHP. - xero
Justin, I've been a C# developer forever. I did a little ASP.NET 1.0 but then got into the business and data layers and never looked back. But, over the past 2-3 years, I've gained a diabolical loathing for all things SQL so it looks like back to the UI I go. I'd prefer to do desktop clients but that's just not what the future seems to hold. I won't go so far as to get into Silverlight/Flash kind of things but ASP.NET? Sure, why not. - Akiva Moskovitz

Kansas Preacher Pushes Obama Muslim Message WICHITA, KAN. — A Wichita, Kansas preacher says he will not remove a message on his church sign that says President-Elect Barack Obama is a Muslim. The sign is staying up despite the fact that Obama is a Christian. The sign at Spirit One Christian Center reads, “America we have a Muslim president. This is sin against the Lord.” Obama supporters reportedly got into a shouting match with parishioners outside the church on Sunday. - ♣genieyclo♣
Could it be that there are too many stupid people in America for it to survive as a functioning superpower? This thought crosses my mind often these days. In the nineties I felt like we were a highly educated nation, on the cutting edge of human progress. Then the wheels fell off with the turn of the millennium. - Sean McBride
I love the "Church Without Walls" part. It's so ironic. - Glenn Batuyong
Exodus 20:3 is part of the 10 commandments, it states "Thou shalt have no other god's before me". I can think of no way in which having a Muslim president (if that were even the case) would violate that commandment for any Christian. How sad that this is what things have come to. - Aaron Krug

How is being a muslim a sin against any just deity? This is the most stupid and ignorant sign I've seen in a long time. This sign is a sin against everything that America stands for and I don't even believe in sin... - Alex Scoble CISSP
Come on people. Do you need to see a sign like this to know that there are idiots everywhere and it's best to just ignore them? :) - Patricia

This cultural rot reaches to the highest levels of the American political system. The Republican Party, without much subtlety, encouraged this kind of thinking during the recent campaign. Banker Manipulation Of Gold And Silver Prices Further Exposed
1 hour ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Commodities experts are in agreement that the price of gold and silver is being manipulated by bankers and government officials in order to halt a mass abandonment of paper currencies and the debt based economy. " - Aviv via Bookmarklet
"The price of silver at the time of Bear Stearns implosion was $20 to $21 an ounce. A free-market covering of a concentrated short position of this size would have driven silver prices to the $50 or $100 level and would have exposed the long-term manipulation. Rather than let the free market deal with the required short covering of such an uneconomic and unbacked short position, government authorities arranged to have the short position transferred to JP Morgan. This was undertaken by the U.S. Treasury Department, along with taxpayer guarantees against loss to Morgan worth billions of dollars. This was done, no doubt, to save the financial system from imploding. This was also patently illegal, as it aided and abetted the silver manipulation." - Aviv

Nice and simple although you could already do this by inviting people to a meeting in, for example, Outlook. It doesn't do recurring appointments, as far as I could tell. Recurrence is where you need something like this. - Jim Hawkins
we have just rolled out a nice update.. New features, more locations, better interface... - Alexander Kohlhofer
I'm not sure how this works... so I set up several timezones and I want to link to that configuration so I can check times later... where is the url/link for me to do that? Or am I using it wrong? - Lindsay Donaghe
oh... hmm, maybe I get it now... so it's not for you to check what time it is now, but for you to mark a particular point in time. That's cool, but I'd like to be able to set up my timezones so that I can come to the home page (or a url permalink) that shows the current time so I can tell if, say, it's too late in the evening to call my Grandmother who lives 2 timezones away. - Lindsay Donaghe
it remembers your settings automatically (for your computer). If somebody sends you a link it will display that time in your time zones. If you sent a link from yours it will be shown to them in their time zones. - Alexander Kohlhofer
yeah, definitely with you there Lindsay...i actually asked everyone if they knew anything like that a while back and there were a few suggestions..see here: http://friendfeed.com/e/854434... - Zee from WeDoCreative
Update again - I guess it must store those in cookies... looks like they were there when I came back to the page. So in that case a couple of feature suggestions, be able to choose different configs (say I have AZ, Central and Pacific because that's where my family lives, but another one for AZ, London, Sydney and Dallas where my business contacts are...). Also, be able to add a note or description to the zone so it would say "Central - Dad, Grandma, Uncle Norm" or something and be easy to spot... - Lindsay Donaghe
if you go to permatime.com it does just that. It shows you the current time across all your time zones :) - Alexander Kohlhofer
true - if you save the create permatime url as a bookmark...it's a great way to quickly go and insert any time in a particular place... - Zee from WeDoCreative
Any chance for those other suggestions, Alexander? - Lindsay Donaghe
Allowing custom labels is definitely on our list. I am not so sure about some more clock like features as there are plenty of good world time clocks out there. Permatime is all about sharing points in time - a definitive need with no good solution - till now ;) - Alexander Kohlhofer
We added custom labels a little while back. We have just added drag and drop, and easier date entry for the week ahead. For the keen or geekily-inclined, there's an indication how to construct your own permatime urls at http://permatime.com/about - Tim Diggins
Nice idea, not-so-good implementation. I tried about 5 different variations of input for Seattle, neither worked. Finally I had to google the official name of the time zone "Pacific Standard Time" and entered it. It should be easier than that. - andrei_c

Is Your Printer Wasting Your Ink and Money?
yesterday at 8:08 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Everyone's been there: You just bought an expensive ink cartridge for your printer, you use it for a while, and then suddenly—much sooner than seems reasonable—your printer tells you that you're either low on or out of ink. Suspicious of the amount of ink wasted by adhering to the low ink warnings of popular printers, PC World hit the lab, testing just how much ink is left in "dead" cartridges" - Kol Tregaskes via Bookmarklet
That's nothing new, printer manufacturers make most of their income from ink cartridges, not from selling the hardware. - Amit Morson
Canon is guilty of this. They use a two chamber design: the first is a basic ink well, the second is filled with cotton that acts as a wick. The wick chamber wicks (who knew) ink out of the well chamber and delivers it to the print head (keeps an even distribution with all the head movement). The well dries up about 200 pages before the wick. The level sensor is in the well and triggers when it's empty. They can't put a sensor in the wick without messing things up, but they could make the wick smaller... - xero
You can buy a new Lexmark (ink included) for the same price as a new set of cartridges. It's ridiculous. - xero
I use mine until it says the ink is completely out. I ignore the "low" warnings, except to know I need to buy a new cartridge soon. - Ladybug Heather
Ink cartridges are way overpriced. - ♜ Bjorn Tipling
thing is, a "low" warning is just that "you're running low".. you shouldn't *ever* change a cart when it says low, only when it says out. If you have a laser printer and your print outs are getting faded lines, take the cart out and give it a gentle shake from side to side. Redistributes the soot and keeps it going for a bit longer. Repeat until you get the real "You're out!" message. Never understood the people that replace something when it just says low. - alphaxion
Some of the print drivers tell you it is "out" when it is "low". That's the issue. They're lying to you. Even when the driver has a "low" and an "out" you can still generally get another 15-20 pages after it says "out". - xero

“If banks don't lend out money, what is their purpose?”
10 hours ago - Link
To securely hold the money of others. - xero
Meh, I have a safe at home. That's not even a good reason. If they don't lend, how do I collect interest on them holding my money? What can they do for me that I can't do myself? - ♫ Rahsheen™
They do provide a system for moving money from one place to another. - Brian Sullivan
Your interest is only their because your money makes them money. They could just charge everyone to use their vaults and their security instead of letting most of it be free. Most home safes are about as secure as your mattress. Watch this, has a simplified history of banking in it: http://video.google.com/videop... - xero
er, according the video, xero: if they don't *lend* money, they can't *make* money. and therefore can't pay interest. really, the only benefit over the mattress or safe is that banks are FDIC-insured. - tiffany
That's exactly my point, tiffany. In relation to the economic situation at hand. Banks are obviously not lending to unstable individuals. It's also being said they won't lend to unstable companies. So, who will they lend to? If they aren't lending money, they are useless. - ♫ Rahsheen™
They can make money by charging fees to hold your money, but it won't be anywhere near as much as if they were lending money. (They can also make an obscenely huge profit due to the fractional reserve system.) Remove lending money and banks do still serve a purpose, their profits margins just become much smaller as they become a security company instead of a banking company. - xero
To take ours. - orionstarr
So, basically, they become useless, which tells me they will lend a bankrupt auto-industry money all day long. Why? Because, in these times, a bankrupt auto-industry is about as good as their going to get. - ♫ Rahsheen™
American cars suck. It's no wonder. - orionstarr

Actually, no... You can use a mix of Formula language (which is specific to Notes but super easy), LotusScript, or JavaScript depending on what your needs are (and whether it's a Notes client app or a webapp). I'm horrible with syntax as a general rule so I have to look that up regardless. Ahh, it's nice to read discussion about Notes/Dominio again. The Forces Driving Women Out of Computer Science [Randall Stross, New York Times - 11/15/08]

Why are there FEWER women entering computer science in 2008 than 1991? - Mitchell Tsai via Bookmarklet
ELLEN SPERTUS, a graduate student at M.I.T., wondered why the computer camp she had attended as a girl had a boy-girl ratio of six to one. And why were only 20 percent of computer science undergraduates at M.I.T. female? She published a 124-page paper, “Why Are There So Few Female Computer Scientists?”, that catalogued different cultural biases that discouraged girls and women from pursuing a career in the field. The year was 1991. - Mitchell Tsai
Computer science has changed considerably since then. Now, there are even FEWER women entering the field. - Mitchell Tsai
Why this is so remains a matter of dispute. - Mitchell Tsai
What’s particularly puzzling is that the explanations for under-representation of women that were assembled back in 1991 applied to all technical fields. Yet women have achieved broad parity with men in almost every other technical pursuit. 39% (1984-85) --> 51% (2004-5) - Mitchell Tsai
In computer science, however... 28% (2001-2) --> 22% (2004-5) Many computer science departments report that women now make up less than 10 percent of the newest undergraduates. - Mitchell Tsai
Because they can get easier and better paying jobs in other fields? - Igor The Troll
But why women leaving CS and not EE? - Mitchell Tsai
Are women enrolling then leaving or are they just not enrolling? CS has been turning people away for years now because what's taught (and how) is nothing like what is expected by the students. - xero

No. Fuck the union insanity and fatcat execs. I would only be for it only if all the execs took massive pay cuts and the unions cut down ridiculous benefits but that will never happen. - Leather Donut
No. They've had more time, and more second chances, than most industries to fix what was wrong. - Rick Powell

Bush's tax incentive to small business owners to write off most or all of the price of a large vehicle over $60,000 was like a gift from the heavens to the American auto industry. They had that gift for 8 years, dropped directly in their lap. So many vehicles were sold through this tax loophole that now we have a glut of giant trucks and SUV's on the road. And yet, after gas goes up a dollar or two, Detroit goes immediately in the toilet. This was bad business all around. I say no bailout. - Phil Glockner
No - I don't think inefficient businesses that can't make money because of crappy products should be "rewarded." The moral hazard has already been crossed with these bailouts. What next, Yahoo! gets a bailout? The cast of Heroes when their show gets cancelled? - Jason Kaneshiro
NO! NON! NADA! A bailout is the LAST thing the dinosaur auto sector needs. Give them Big Bucks for INNOVATION, electric cars and every other truly GOOD idea out there. We need vehicles. And North America has some of the finest auto manufacturers around. But we need an overhaul of the *type* of vehicles being produced. OIL is the past. - V for Veselka
Oh and I want MY bailout - Leather Donut
Yes- with conditions. Cars must be inovative using air and or solar power. These cars must be afordable, lets say 4,000 range. If we loose GM many will loose jobs "vertical" and "cross vertical markets" are connected to GM. We need GM to employee our young people. We also need GM to be a part of the trade schools that Regan removed. Lets do away with the ego's and start with soloa powered cars made by GM.One of the ideas is to give GM money for "innovation." no.no.no.no.no. why should you bailem out? shitty company? they deserve it. look at Toyota. great company. but what's the misconception? "Not American." What's the rules for being an American company? Toyota is firmly entrenched in this market, having a large workforce in America, strong market stake, buying power, sponsorship, establishing institutions, everything. Welcome to the globalized world, this sort of pseudo-protectionism should stop. - ♣genieyclo♣
sound like the auto industry needs investors. hey, auto-dudes, i'll allow the gub'ment to invest in a project for green cars. not $$ for SUVs, or golden parachutes, etc. green cars, get it? - MikeAmundsen
I want to say no, but $25 Billion is still cheaper than $125 Billion. I don't want to think that way but I can't help it. - Occasional Headbanger
They will be bailed out with conditions. GM needs to step it up and I agree that Toyota is a great company. But regardless of what you and I think it will never be our choice as long as you stay a slave to a system that regards you only as a consumer. Just like the bank bail out, I never okayed that one and we all are paying for it. Watching the fat cows get fatter. Put up or shut up Sovereign or bust! - SekhemetsHathor
No. Let them file bankruptcy and force them to restructure. The airlines did it, right? Again - no more bailouts until WE get one. - Vince DeGeorge
No, giving money to the auto industry now is only delaying the inevitable, unless they agree to specific changes. - Kim Landwehr
Yes, but only for the good of those whose jobs will be lost when they fail, however, the money must come with stringent terms with specific goals, lots of oversight, and available to anyone building or designing an auto in the USA. Though I have to say, I really don't want them to get the money, I'd rather them suffer from their past stupidity and greed. - xero
No, fuck them. They NEED to lose those jobs in light of this. "UAW Says It Will Rather Tax Payers Foot The Bill Than Accept Cuts To Keep Detroit Afloat" I need a job. Why the fuck should my taxes pay for someone else to have a job. Fuck that. http://bit.ly/fucktheuaw - Leather Donut
No. Unfortunately, businesses can't do bad business and then expect somebody to bail them out. Ford isn't going to let itself completely die. I'm also concerned about where the U.S. government is getting this money, and it sounds like the bank bailout is leaning toward a fail. I'm sorry to see people lose their jobs but I don't think this is the answer. - Patricia
no, they've had the american economy by the balls with their stubbornness and even refusal to adapt to cleaner, safer and more efficient technologies and business models and will continue to operate along the same manner if given a bailout. al these industries are like petulant children -- you cater to them in every way possible and they'll just ask for more and more - Cee Bee
After watching this morning the Treasury secretary change the last bailout - you know, the one that if it didn't pass the entire economic world would fall - I say no. Better to have a bailout for main street so they have more money to buy cars. What happened to good old fashioned capitalism? - Chris Reed
No, because the big auto makers have proven time and again how intransigent they are to change. They've been failing for a while now. It's time to let them die once and for all. - Steven Perez
