You "will be imprisoned in a room with a door that's unlocked & open inwards; as long as
Dreamers hope to acquire a life of advantage. But to succeed they must notice and learn to use the tools at hand. And
it does not occur to [you] to pull rather than push" Wittgenstein, http://books.google.com/books... p.42
A major reason people think philosophy is hard to read: They read it too quickly. Philosophy should be read slowly and pondered.
@coachkiki What is your 2B Ph.D. in?
@coachkiki What about Wittgenstein's history most impresses you?
"Speech with and without thought is to be compared with the playing of a piece of music with and without thought." Witt, PI, aphorism 341
Indeed, @coachkiki For example, what other philosopher inherited great wealth and gave it all away to live simply & do philosophy?
...Reading the written sentence loud or soft is indeed comparable with singing from a musical score, but
@ileducprof Were your tweets cited in the legal paper? That would be a surprise. Your book, Teaching Black Girls? Not so much a surprise.
"My sentences are all supposed to be read slowly." Wittgenstein http://books.google.com/books... p.57e
@ileducprof Can you tell us more about the legal paper, too ?
@ileducprof Did you mention the word in a Tweet? Or in a formal writing?
@coachkiki Don't recall that, but impressive. hmmm. LW does have an interesting remark on language and music...hold on. I'll find it.
@coachkiki Yes, yes. I've read that, too. Wittgenstein had his dark side. But his philosophy is just magical, if one gets into it.
'meaning' (thinking) the sentence that is read is not. aphorism#22
Reach for the clouds, but if your dreams are too specific you'll never get there. Reachable dreams have a little flexibility built in.
Once and a while, one does need to stop and think before speaking, stilted or not. May we know when its such a time.
People may say "Think before you speak," but just imagine how stilted conversations would become if we always thought before we spoke.
When conversation goes well, our words are not separate from our thoughts. They move as one, like a boat on a river. Nevertheless
Have U noticed theres a new link 2 "Retweets" N th sidebar? It includes tabs for all th RTs U've received, sent,& RTs of Ur tweets.
And, for Wittgenstein, our failure to understand that language consists of sub-languages leaves us in confusion because
Of course, we sometimes fail to understand each other -- and much more often than we think.
"what confuses us is the uniform appearance of words when we hear them spoken or meet them in script &print." http://books.google.com/books... sec11
the rules of language are inconsistent across language games. Wittgenstein says:
Let me put later Wittgenstein's later philosophy in a nutshell, according to my interpretation, of course. (see: http://users.rcn.com/rathbon... )
Often times, different language games share the same words but not the same rules. http://users.california.com/~rathbo... For instance,
To avoid confusion, we must detect which language game is being played &change our rule set to coordinate with talking partners.
The term "break" means something different in a language game about broken objects than in a language game about cars.
