cute but what happened to festivus this year?
- Laura Norvig
Merry Christmas to the FriendFeed team. You guys rock! FriendFeed reacts quickly and you're adding wonderful features all the time (Thanks soooo much for the "edit" feature.)
- Mitchell Tsai
Happy Holidays FF crue -- you've made this an excellent and memorable year for many of us. Facebook couldn't have done it without you! :)
- Christopher Galtenberg
w00t you gave me the best online year in 15 years!!! ;p Thanks a lot, everyone, for what you've done here XD
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
Sigh. Sometimes it is the little touches, like seasonal logos or easter eggs, that mark a site as a living project, and that you really miss when the developers have all moved on to something else.
- Michael R. Bernstein
"We're gearing up to launch a new feature which makes Twitter truly location-aware. A new API will allow developers to add latitude and longitude to any tweet."
- Louis Gray
Holly smokes.... that could be huge -- location, location, location
- Yann Ropars
there goes ubertwitter's main comp adv
- stanleyyork
shouldnt they be working on something important - like spam or actually keeping the service online?
- andy brudtkuhl
What a win for robbers and thieves. Now we need an app for spoofing location.
- τorƍue
"Shouldn't they be working on somewhat important" like shortening URIs on-the-fly for SMS only instead of altering data on arrival, creating a huge problem on the Web? [Sorry Andy for stealing your opening phrase]
- Sebastian
You can already spoof location. Actually, you can spoof the phone number behind the Twitter text messages, no?
- Steve Lynch
from twhirl
Oh wait, they closed that hole, which has been around since the service's inception, five months ago. Only took a few years....
- Steve Lynch
from twhirl
Are they going to text compress lat/long? You can do it in like 6 characters for most purposes.
- Hayes Haugen
Is there a standard format for text compression of lat/lon? If not, now's the time.
- Ken Sheppardson
This was available before, just not on a per-Tweet basis. In IRC they have also said it will be "opt-in", and you'll have to turn it on. You can't specify which individuals it's available to though.
- Jesse Stay
Ken: not that I am aware - it's in my list of things to do. I was thinking a simple intro tag like ] and then 5 to 7 sms characters. Should be enough for 100 meter resolution as I recall.
- Hayes Haugen
Of course the first half a dozen searches on compression algorithms for lat/lon hit on patents. Because converting a floating point number in a fixed range to a shorter text string is some pretty heavy weight IP that should be protected... *rolls eyes*
- Ken Sheppardson
An obvious optimization is not to distribute your range equally over the planet. Don't need the same longitudinal accuracy at the poles as we do at 45 degrees.
- Hayes Haugen
My guess is they won't encode it in the message, it'll just be metadata attached like the source, author, time, etc., available only via the API or non-SMS clients
- Ken Sheppardson
boring! though one would still need some sort of client to decipher the encoded location.
- Hayes Haugen
Ken, per the dev list that's what it will be.
- Jesse Stay
I wonder which celebrity will be first to accidentally reveal their home location.
- Martin Bryant
from iPhone
τorƍue & Martin are pushing my buttons. Re: spoofing, even with noise, there will still be some signal.
- Wade Dorrell
I use Brightkite for my GEO, my set up has worked for a year, but now all the apps are doing the same thing, so it might be time to change it up.
- Anne Haynes
I have one, but I don't know if enabling Voice with a US Number from my gmail account will not screw things up the day Voice will be available in France. Maybe I will be stuck with the US number. I don't want to fucked up my main gmail account, so the best would be to test on one of my other gmail account, so if you can send me an invite, let me know! Thank you!
- Jeremy
I can send you the invite to your second account, just click the link with your special gmail account loged in, and it should work. I send you the link using Wave.

"Two separate sources—one inside the company and one outside it—have confirmed to Ars tonight that Google plans to launch an operating system built in some fashion around its new web browser, Chrome. One source says that the new OS will be launched soon, perhaps as early as tomorrow. Tentatively called "Google Chrome OS," the project appears targeted at netbooks... [A] quick-booting OS built around a single application like Chrome would be a natural fit for a netbook."
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
If Google doesn't build this soon, I am going to do it myself at some point. I really, really want an instant-on laptop with low power consumption running Chrome. And I am not the only one.
- Bret Taylor
Tim: to make Android a great laptop OS, you would need to do a lot of work. Just because it exists doesn't mean it works well for this use case.
- Bret Taylor
waves hands wildy -- me too - I also want simple useful O/S that doesn't have "security hole" crap!, plus instant on, low power consumption (ideal for laptop / netbooks) with Chrome browser Ahhhh
- Susan Beebe
Well, if you want that, you want an instant-on os, which are already available. I would prefer a fairly low power, fairly robust environment, not to mention a sharable environment with my mobile device. I'll actually be upset if Google builds "yet another OS". Also, I don't know think it would take a whole lot of work to make (strip) android and make it work based on a browser and maybe...
- Tim Hoeck
Whatever it is it will need to address media - both consumable (think Netflix) and personal (my photos and my mp3s). Not to mention Google needs to get their head on straight about Android branding.
- Hayes Haugen
First reaction is that it is a misstep to separate this from their Android efforts.
- Hayes Haugen
Android has to be closer to an OS than Chrome, since it is actually on OS. Chrome does device management etc? An OS does a lot more than execute javascript in processes.
- Todd Hoff
I think currently the only OS that doesn't have a security hole is one that is locked in a closet with no network connectivity and no input or output devices.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I know why google cannot release a google chrome web browser on a linux platform. they're doing some shit operating system
- xiawinter
Derrick, how can you resist?! Do you really have a Simon? When I see that pic I have this memory of playing Simon on a plane when I was a kid. I'm sure I drove the other passengers insane! [EDIT: Wikipedia says Simon came out in 1978, which would make me 17 at the time. Weird, in my memory I'm younger ...]
- Laura Norvig
Would like to see a comparison from today's companies, to two years from now, and see how places like Twitter And FriendFeed stack up....
- Mike Shields
It's a pity that, while aggregating the demise of named Web 2.0 companies, the authors elected to illustrate it using static graphics, rather than making it a clickable (Web1.5?) image map, at least the second part <http://img.labnol.org/di...>.With granular links pointing to, I don't know, perhaps the TechCrunch Deadpool, or the Crunchbase?
- ianf ⌘
what's odd is how many of the acquired companies are still searching for revenue. it's not just the dead companies that fail to meet the first rule of a company. be inherently profitable.
- Spotcher
If I understand this correctly, most prevalent post-dotcom-bust dotcom model is to build up a respectable client base assisted by press buzz and faves, then sell out to a media giant that has the financial muscle and managerial competence to turn our cottage into a true industry.
- ianf ⌘
you're right, ianf, but that's not a sustainable model. the media giants will one day have to start consolidating, and then the sell it to google concept will wither on the vine, along with the venture capital lottery.
- Spotcher
from twhirl
plus i neglected to mention the small matter of the worst recession in over half a century. that's enough to get everyone focusing on the missing piece of the web 2.0 puzzle. profit.
- Spotcher
No, on paper it's definitely not sustainable, but then strange things have happened in the past. First, there's P.T. Barnum's golden rule; second, there's far too much free capital in the industrialized world chasing after the same few viable business ideas. Neither of which looks like it'll become obsolete in this our life, or next.
- ianf ⌘
y, there's always the barnum bandwagon effect. but as far as reponsible capital is concerned, a healthy balance sheet is likely to mean a whole lot more. that won't end frivolous investments and acquisitions based on nothing but it will certainly dent the market for them considerably, and choke off the sense of possibility of both entrepreneurs, private investors and vc's.
- Spotcher
from twhirl
All I know is future generations will look down on us as unimaginative country bumpkins, while simultaneously investing in resurrection of dead souls on Krypton (I hear it's near break even point as we speak, wanna join?)
- ianf ⌘
Most of them shouldn't have existed in the first place
- LANjackal
You really can't say that. Couple of guys have this bright idea of making Blue Boxes for controlling long-distance telephone relays, sell them to friends for a while, next decide to go legit and make a "computer on a single PCB" in a garage. Fast-forward a couple of decades and next we know one of them dances with the stars on a Seqway, while the other is a brooding multibillionaire in a Xanadu-like fortress somewhere forever waiting for his Orson Welles.
- ianf ⌘
I think the average person feels the need to think that other people actually care whether they exist or not... some feel this need more than others... it isn't "I think, therefore I am", it is "you read my tweet, you know I am"
- Paula W
yep, that's what my dog says every time I take him for his walk and he's reading his p-mail. lol
- Laura Zickus
Joost, good point. They're separate downloads with different features, so microtransactions might not work.
- Veronica
The 'bad' thing about the app store -- there should be some sort of 'upgrade' pricing --
- Bryce Campbell
I agree with Bryce. That's why i really looking forward to 3.0 that and many other things
- Fee501st
From what I can understand of what Apple has publicly said, you'll be able to upgrade to pro-features of a paid app, provided that functionality is built into the app of course. However, if you're using a _free_ version, you won't be able to purchase upgrades via micropayments. But, I could have misread that. It was a while ago.
- Jordan Brock
if it works as advertised ... cooool. The only thing it doesn't seem to do is show who else is posting in the neighborhood, even if they're not on your friends list
- Deepak Singh
Bet this news makes Sarah and Martin ECSTATIC! Same old story, layoffs lead to windfalls - Glad R3 did well but SUCKS that 2 of the best had to go to make it possible!
- Jeff Garlick
Huh. Imagine that. Too bad you had to can good people to make it happen. Seems like this announcement is just poor taste after laying people off.
- Vermyndax
from twhirl
Quantity doesn't really triumph quality (mebbe for ads). I would rather look at 50% of the 2 billion on flickr than the 1% of 10 billlion on facebook. Also, I can hope to find a picture I want on flickr (tags, EXIF data etc).
- Shivanand Velmurugan
"Democratic Sen. Barack Obama ends his historic bid for the White House with a seven-point lead over Republican Sen. John McCain among likely voters in Ohio and 10 points in Pennsylvania, but with just a two-point, too-close-to-call lead in Florida, according to simultaneous Quinnipiac University Swing State polls released today. "
- newsjunk.com
Don't bother... the only way to get it to work is to drop friends. You can have everyone as fans, but if you try to add them back as friends the system can't handle it. http://getsatisfaction.com/pownce...
- Veronica
heh, Leo, did you try asking Leah Culver? @leahculver
- Daynah
Leo you know Kevin why don't you just ask him?
- Colide81 (James)
Worse case you could send an email to bugs@pownce.com and see if they can help out at all.
- Kyle Bamford
pretty sure if they get wind that Leo's got an issue, somebody will get on it
- Mark Schulz
If only Kevin would read this comment on Friendfeed. One can only dream.
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Mark - It's been a known issue for a long time. Numerous heavy follow users have the same problem. Apparently, it's not a priority for Pownce. I'm finding this thread a little funny with Leo asking Veronica if she knows Kevin. I guess it's possible not everybody follows everybody :)
- Charlie Anzman
Kevin: "Hey, we need to put a limit on the users." "How many" "Um, how many does Leo have? Remember the Twitter war?" "Can do boss."
- xero
@leo Your pownce post about this (fed from twitter perhaps?) made the homepage of pownce!
- Gez
I used to have a coin that said "It's a bug" on one side and "It's a feature" on the other side. Came in quite handy in defect triage meetings.
- Andy Roth
By the time it gets dressed up the bug probably has a few more legs ;)
- Mathieu Ayel
Bahaha, kind of reminds me of how WoW players talk about Bliz "Its not a bug; its a feature" and "Its working as intended!"
- David Adam
What does getting that news 24h early do for you, Robert? I feel the same smug feeling seeing slower outlets sometimes but I'm not always sure I benefit from being so close to the news volcano.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I work for Yahoo! News - I get to see it before it happens....
- Mistletoe Glen
if wsj was smart, it would have known to marry you to its online platform - and you'd be getting it there instead :)
- Patricia
Guy here at work got an SMS on his iphone today from Rogers - USB power adapter recall - quick search in FF showed that tidbit 10 days ago!
- Capn' One Eye - adrift
For all those not in high-tech, Google Reader, Friendfeed, and Techneme isn't an option. Reading the news in the WSJ is the resource.
- Randy Ksar
from twhirl
Robert, buy the WSJ. They cover and write the news. What would happen to aggregators like Google Reader, Friendfeed and others if there were longer anyone doing that?
- Rod Bauer
from twhirl
I glanced over the front page of the NYTimes today on a coffee break and thought to myself, "geez, that's all old news already".
- Brian Ries
The definition of "News" is something that is "New" to the reader. Those not sitting online all day can get a handy filtered, noise free and considered opinion in a portable format. In-depth analysis is missing from "lifestream journalism" and a good newspaper will expand "yesterday's news"
- Michael Rose
The thing that the WSJ can do for someone is add in depth analysis and opinion. Something the social media echo chamber is rapidly showing itself to be HORRIBLE about. We get lots of info on FF / Twitter / Techmeme but much of it is distorted and biased almost beyond use. Don't get me wrong, I think there is HUGE value in FF / Twitter and love them both - but it is becoming clear that more in depth outlets are also needed.
- Soulhuntre
Agreed. It'd be tragic for all if we lost what newspapers bring to the table. People should want to be helping them make the transition, not gleefully clapping their demise. Those are huge entities who supply jobs. Web 2.0 is quick to want the death of all things 'old' but sadly, none ever talk about or create models to replace it. At best, one out of the million blogs will be grown enough to be able to employ 30 people. Conde Nast employs hundreds and thousands. It's just a loss all around.
- Patricia
I love my elitist brethren. And imagine, some people don't get or can't get news AS IT HAPPENS WORLDWIDE.app.php like the rest of the upper class. So yeah, thanks for that.
- Eric Rice
the same with every newspaper in Sweden.
- Svartling
Internet = breaking news, newspaper = backstory
- Alex Nesbitt
This is the same reason I'm letting all my magazine subscriptions lapse. There's nothing in them I hadn't already seen.
- Joey Gibson
There's still something about enjoying a relaxing Sunday morning with the paper, though.
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
My wife's allergic to legumes; since most papers are printed with soy-based ink these days, I haven't subscribed to a newspaper since the mid-1980's.
- Mistletoe Glen
that might be true for the news and headlines, but lengthier and more explanatory stuff often requires a bit of digging and some time to weigh and reflect -- there's much more to news than what's on the envelope.
- Adrian Chan
I doubt that everything in the WSJ was in FriendFeed . There are only a few papers in America because most are really part of a homogeneous blob due to all the syndicated stories they pick up. The WSJ does not rely on syndication, and instead produces its own material; it is by far the best newspaper in the states and is interesting all the way through. If you said the NYT or LAT, yes they are all over FriendFeed and have little depth unless they are articles dealing with culture or their local domain
- RAPatton
same here although I still read the WSJ (online only)
- Chris Selland
Nothing new. I have stopped reading newspapers. I have my Google Reader in my mobile to take care of the news. Newspapers are yesterdays story.
- Sidharth Dassani
More than likely, print media will be hybrid models or go digital entirely. expect it in TV as well (already has happened, etc.). the next project i'm considering is a hybrid model in hopes to create an example that can work for both. Don't kill print media!! Just help it become more modern :)
- Patricia
Makes sense. Its not like there's anything interesting going on in finance at the moment.
- john conroy
I'm a fan of the WSJ. They might not be the fastest, but they have some of the best insight I've found. FriendFeed, TechMeme, and Google Reader are better tools for determining what happened. I think the WSJ is better for figuring out the why and how. Different tools for different jobs.
- Aaron Schaub
Thanks Erhan. So if we combine this with your observation there are only about 7000 FF users? Seems highly unlikely. I am not doubting your numbers. It's Alexa I am not sure about.
- Vinay | विनय
Vinay: Turkish Friendfeeders are really addicted - also I really don't know how many users in world. (Scoble has ~20000 followers - the others in top 10 are around 5000 mostly. xK account number is not important.)
- Erhan Erdogan
Turkish (active and public users who shared Turkish entries) has %1.71 share in total users, and %0.88 share in total entries. (via FFholic) But it doesn't mean that Alexa is wrong. Depending on our data Turkish users do not share much but like and especially comment. So they read more than they share which increases the traffic from Turkey ;)
- FFholic.com
And also... We currently track 699 active users who share in Turkish ;)
- FFholic.com
Wow : ) My brain is working like ffholic's algorithm! ; )
- Erhan Erdogan
Now you can play Robert Scoble for a day. At least in FriendFeed. The link here shows you what FriendFeed looks like to me. Cool. By the way, I'm looking at what it looks like to YOU. Just replace my user name with someone else's. - http://beta.friendfeed.com/scoblei...
sampsa, just because you don't like something doesn't mean that it's stupid for someone else to like it.
- Akiva Moskovitz
but I don't wanna be a Scoble! (in my best Seinfeld voice) :)
- Tim Hoeck
Not really can we see what you are seeing - from what I can tell the feed is your feed without all your hides applied. Besides playing Scoble for a day even only on FF would be too tiring.
- Brian Sullivan
