Chaaaaaang!…… “It’s been a hard day’s night And I’ve been working like a dog” This first chord that starts A Hard Day’s Night is one of the most recognizable and famous opening chords in rock & roll. It’s played by George Harrison on his 12 string Rickenbacker. The other reason that it’s famous is because for 40 years nobody knew for sure what it was. Many guitar players have tried in vain to recreate the sound but have usually failed miserably. - Leo Laporte

Obama has amazing literary and political instincts. The puppy anecdote in yesterday's press conference, as silly and simple as it was, was very deft. Amidst all this serious economics he injected a personal note that gave people something to hang on to. It was a perfect grace note. - Leo Laporte
I told someone the other day that Obama writes his own speeches, and they were astonished. I figured I'd better fact-check, so I googled & found this. Vindicated! It would indeed be unrealistic to expect him to do absolutely ALL his writing, but the writing process described here is just so, so much more authentic and trustworthy than, say, the fact that Mark Salter wrote so much of McCain's "memoir." - Amanda

Do You Bookmark Socially or Locally?
November 7 at 9:26 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
Most stuff I bookmark online (on delicious or magnolia), but short-term stuff, like jobs or concerts I'm interested in following up on I bookmark locally. - Jandy Stone
yeah, similar - frankly i've never gotta hang of bookmarking...I keep tools i need to viisit regularly in my toolbar and then every other one i tend to search google for! :) - Zee from WeDoCreative
socially through delicious w/ some on Google bookmarks & Yahoo bookmarks - scott
I always do it socially, unless I have a tab open that I haven't looked at yet and need to close the browser. Then I just delete them again once I've looked at them. - Geoff Girardin
Socially - I rarely mark bookmarks as private, but if I do, they're short-term (as with Jandy). - flammable
I always bookmark socially, unless it's local scope (eg intranet) - David Slattery
Socially. I don't see the point of bookmarking locally as socially works both ways and locally only serves me. Plus I'd rather have all my links saved to the cloud and my desktop rather than just the desktop. - Jon Gosier
both.. diigo and foxmarks ftw! - Tim Hoeck
I have been using the hell out of Read This Later. At least as far as marking things to read later... *cough* Once I've checked something out, tho, it usually ends up on delicious or somewhere. - abacab
I use both, depending on what I'm bookmarking. - LouCypher
local bookmarks are for porn and you all know it - Mitch
Local for sites I like and If I think other people like the site I add it to stumbleupon or delicious It all really depends. - Snakeyes11 via twhirl
I've started using Twine as well. - Ian May
I used to bookmark by creating contacts. That way they got synchronised to my mobile device. But I don't bookmark since FF3. Browser history = bookmarks. For me it's quicker to type a few letters in the address bar and then pick one of my browser's auto-complete options - Jim Hawkins
@Zee I'm glad someone else uses that method! - David Young
love the ability to access information from any computer in the world, even though I rarely don't have my laptop - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Both too, mostly social... But I think that Delicious is not that social. - Kristian Salonen
Socially. But I agree with Kristian: Delicious have now to improve the social (interaction) side of the whole stuff. - Thierry R. Andriamirado
I bookmark socially using delicious more. stuff with short shelf life i do it with digg. - Carolyn Chan
Socially, Delicious. - Leandro Ardissone
socially, now using diigo since i can have bookmarks private, public or only shared with group/project members only (especially on projects which has some confidentiality issues) - Naor
socially, diigo - Jennifer Van Grove
I do what Jandy does, though I bookmark locally as well if it's something important or feel I'll be visiting over and over. - Kol Tregaskes
Delicious. Never looked back. - Roberto Bonini
I usually bookmark socially. Share, learn, and grow together. :) - Daynah
Somewhere in the past few years, I got too lazy to bookmark at all. Most of my computers almost always have something like 8 windows open with 35 or so tabs between them, and I might have IE, Chrome and or Safari open, too. Wonder what a psychiatrist would make of that. - MiɳiMagɘ (Sexy Scimitar)
With FF related items we can see how many people posted and bookmarked any one page. Its great. - Roberto Bonini
Both, one off stuff I keep for reference goes to delicious, stuff I use regularly and want to bookmark for ease of access goes into Google Bookmarks, nothing goes into the browsers local bookmarks. - Andy Davies
Both. I primarily bookmark locally with foxmark syncing but also bookmark socially w/ magnolia. - tsudohnimh
A little of both. - Paul W. Swansen

Weird, I can't upload to Kyte.tv from China but Viddler worked fine. This is just one video I shot at the end of the line where they test thousands of drives using tons of these robotic testers. - Robert Scoble
This video is at the end of the line. We shot the other parts on HD so we have to edit those together and upload them after we get home in a couple of weeks. - Robert Scoble
"We still need a human part of it." Explaining why they couldn't automate the end of the line where final Q&A check is. "Human can be upgraded very fast," was the quote on the video. Another line I like is "Seagate workers are well grounded." Each one is grounded twice: once through their special shoes the conductive floor they are on and a second time through a strap that hooks onto their clothing which has little wires designed to gather static electricity and pass it to the ground instead of into drives. - Robert Scoble

I'm watching in China. What a world. - Robert Scoble
Watching now -- I think the appearance of "I'm on top of it and look at all these big names" is the story more than anything else. This is a confidence game and the experience and names behind him are to build confidence. - Joe Beda
I think we're all watching this. - Mike Doeff
Recording audio of the press conference. - Dave Winer
Re recording -- I'll be impressed if the video of this immediately shows up on change.gov. It would be even better if they were streaming from there. - Joe Beda
Great move to build confidence, something Bush has been completely unable to do. - Jason Kaneshiro
he's really stressing and emphasizing the middle class. - Thomas Hawk
seems to be stressing extension of unemployment benefits, the middle class and helping state and local govts. Nobody's asked him about the auto industry yet. - Thomas Hawk
I'm glad to hear the focus on job loss / creation. - Jeff P. Henderson
He pretty much promised that he wouldn't let auto industry down in his initial comments. No specifics but basically a declaration of "too big to fail." Didn't he say "backbone of American manufacturing"? - Joe Beda
Obama has a good point. As much as I'd like to see the Auto industry deal with this on their own, it would be to big a fail, to big a loss of jobs and a significant drag on the economy to passively let the US auto industry die. - Jeff P. Henderson
Big FAIL on books, dog and schools questions. This is not a "human interest" interview. - Joe Beda
@Jeff. Oh wow, that doesn't look good for getting rid of the oil industry then. - Wizetux
they're asking him about what kind of dog he's going to get now. Says he's going to get a hypo allerginic dog and preference for a shelter dog. No decision on public or private school for his kids yet. - Thomas Hawk
I can't believe that they're asking him about his dog and nobody's brought up the U.S. automakers yet. - Thomas Hawk
think Obama will need to brush up on his QnA skills. - MikeAmundsen
I am not sure, I think he is doing a pretty good job. I mean it isn't like he could do worse than what we have seen in the last 8 years. - Wizetux
I thought he sounded very confident and Presidential in the conference. - Thomas Hawk
@Wiztex, don't think saving the auto industry has anything to do with saving or killing the oil industry. It will not go away anytime soon. - Jeff P. Henderson
Time to deliver ( soon )....clock has started to tick - imran
@Jeff: I was more talking about how the oil industry is so entrenched in our economy and provides so many jobs, that if you can't let the auto industry fail on this basis, then we will never be able to let the oil industry fail for the same reasons. - Wizetux
I loved Obama in this first press conference. He is so much better than Bush it isn't funny at communicating. On CNN here in China they showed the stock market ticker the whole time and it was nice to see the market stayed confident through the whole thing. Also, I liked that he moderated his tax plan and that he's focusing on stimulus, saying "that's the first thing I'd do as President" if it doesn't get done earlier. - Robert Scoble
@imran -- I dunno -- the clock doesn't really start ticking until Jan. The first part of his statement was to say that there is only one president at a time. - Joe Beda
I liked the emphasis on the middle class (of which I am proudly a part). More jobs, another stimulus, extension of unemployment benefits, can't argue with any of that. So much better than the "cut taxes on the rich, and wait (hope) it trickles down to the middle class" garbage of the last 8 years. - Jason Kaneshiro
He had 17 people on stage with him as part of his economic team. - Thomas Hawk
Not a bad press conference. Schmidt for CTO in '09? - Thomas Stromberg
@Wizetux, Sorry I totally missed your point. I agree with your point. Although I think the oil industry is in a much better position than the auto industry and they do realize that the days of cheap and easy oil are numbered. All of them are investing in alternative energy development. For instance, BP is already one of the largest photo voltaic panel producers. - Jeff P. Henderson
Thomas: I would really hate it to see Schmidt as CTO. Need someone a little more removed from big business. I want someone like Larry Lessig. - Robert Scoble
I liked the way they called him "sir" and the one person who called him Senator really stood out. It was definitely a refreshing change from Bush press conferences. Didn't like the swipe he took at Nancy Reagan, or the attempt at self-deprecation when he called himself a mutt. But 9.5 out of 10. Good job. - Dave Winer
Lessig++ - Joe Beda
Dave: I liked the mutt quote, but agree with you about Nancy. - Robert Scoble
Lessig++. IMO, The job requirements include: deep tech understanding, deep understanding of government (especially legislation), technology platform neutrality, and understanding of the transformative power of technology. Sorry, but Schmidt doesn't meet any of those (nether does Ballmer, btw). - Chris Hollander
the Nancy Reagan quote was a bit out of place. He was trying to be funny but probably shouldn't have at the expense of an Ex-President's widow. That said, I'm sure a first Presidential Elect news conference is a very nerve racking thing and I think he did a very good job and sounded very confident. A very good move having his economic team up there with him. That sent a powerful message about his number one priority. - Thomas Hawk
I thought Obama did a good job. I doubt Schmidt for CTO, or any other CEO of a major company. There's plenty of smart non-CEOs for that job that aren't critical to the economic stability of their companies. On the auto bailout, if they're too big to fail, are they too big to suck? Because if I'm being forced to lend or buy equity in these companies, I like to specify what they build. - Chris White
@ Joe: All indicates recession is deepening, so Senator must get ready for worsening situation, before he takes his seat at cockpit in severe economic turbulence, and disengage bush's auto pilot. - imran
@Wizetux There is a huge difference between a sudden failure of an entire industry as opposed to a gradual phasing out. Should the auto industry have mass layoffs and plant and dealership closings it would put hundreds of thousands of citizens out of work immediately with no time to re-train them or ease them into other work. We see industries become extinct all the time, just not in a matter of months (for the most part). - Jeff Jones
someone should have asked him a more direct question though about GM/Ford/Chrysler. I can't believe they asked him about what kind of a dog he was going to get but didn't ask him about one of the most pressing economic questions around right now. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas, it's typical of a failed mainstream media industry flailing about. - Bob M. Montgomery via twhirl
Any speculation on Buffet's place in Obama's team? - Jeff B
Is it just me, or does it seem like political discussion on FF has gotten more intelligent now that the election is over? - Bruce Lewis via fftogo
totally - seems everyone has mellowed out about everything a huge amount - Richard Bradshaw
@Jeff B. I think Buffet is a really outside chance for Sec Treasury. He's said he doesn't want to work in politics in the past and I'd assume that his taking this position would require him to put his personal assets in a blind trust or treasury securities, neither which he'd want to do. Then there's also the question about what it would do to Berkshire Hathaway's stock price. - Thomas Hawk
BRK is worth more as a whole than the sum of it's parts, meaning that there is a huge Buffet premium reflected in the stock price at present. Were Buffet to step down from the helm of that co (something he'd surely have to do as Sec. of Treasury) that premium could be in jeopardy, same could happen of course when he eventually dies as well. I suspect Buffet works as an economic adviser to the President and nothing more. - Thomas Hawk

It's hard to say, but IMO Twitter is better suited to the less-technical folks. Yes, sunglasses! I remember when I learned about emoticons back in the BBS days. I thought they were awesome. what its called doesn't really matter, the issue you raise is one of poor performance and lack of integrated design, same experience I've had with widgets - however what they're meant to provide is a componentized anchor to dynamic content that is provided via a web service (could be external or internal to local file systems) so suggest looking for ways to optimize latency and ui integration and not throw the concept out entirely - good luck at your talk... - mike "glemak" dunn
The whole reason widgets exist is to allow for a modular approach of adding functionality to a web space. The core function of the product is extended by adding modular accessories for the people who want them. If you take the "throw everything" in approach you end up with something too feature rich for the layman and probably not customizable enough for the pro. - Jon Gosier
So how do we move from the way we use widgets today for something more clean? - Ben Borges via fftogo
i think it depends on the widget provider, i really like the way adaptive blue does theirs - heres an example of one in the flow of my tumblr acct http://glemak.tumblr.com/post/... - the design is simple yet robust as you click through & the performance is very fast, because its dynamic and shows what movies i have at home currently i'd want it in my sidebar instead of scrolling down and off the page ultimately - it also will appear in my ff profile so others can sample/comment - mike "glemak" dunn
Seems like the important point is that integration should occur in feeds rather then web pages. That way people can choose to either have widgets display the information, or just display the feed (a la FriendFeed). - Cartwright Reed
cartwright: good point, i probably didn't use integration correctly above, meant the integration of widgets into page themes from a presentation layer perspective - i do think there is a place for smart low latency high value widgets embedded in sites, allows for easy inclusion of syndicated dynamic content but your feed point is also very true - choice is good & ff is excellent at providing a platform for that choice - so right on :) - mike "glemak" dunn
