Download the new Yelp app (came out yesterday). So you shake your iPhone 3 times. That activates a feature called Monocle. A message should come up if you activated it. A blue box will come up saying "the Monocle has been activated." It will create a button in the top right corner. Now you should be able to look at the bars, restaurants, etc. Only works on iPhone 3GS.
- Robert Scoble
You point it at businesses, or down the city block. I'll try it right now.
- Robert Scoble
Yep! Works. Took a few tries to get it to activate. Some of the places it shows me have been closed for ages though, guess I need to update Yelp for the area.
- Otto
That sounds so cool. Would love to see a video demo of it Robert!
- Alex Calic
I wonder why it's an easter egg. That sounds great.
- Daniel Ha
I just did it. Very cool. I hear this feature was added for me. I really love it!
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Daniel: probably to get it through the iPhone store approval process faster.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Raises the question of whether they would have rejected it if they'd known about it. Or did Yelp tell the reviewers about it?
- Jan Dawson
Very, very cool! Just tried it out. There's not a lot on Yelp near by work (kind of an industrial area), but I did get it to find the nearest restaurant. So cool! :-)
- Josh Bancroft
Nice idea but in my case the locations seem to be about 180 degrees off - i.e. showing behind me instead of in front - but may be down to a fuzzy GPS location or something - will have to keep trying
- Jan Dawson
I wonder why it was "secret", ... undocumented API usage or just to create marketing buzz ?
- Kooleido
I hate that the iPhone 3G can handle all this new stuff, but Apple insists that you need the 3Gs. Qik on the jailbroken 3G has been awesome!
- Elijah Nicolas
@Elijah Nicolas The 3Gs is for the built in compass that is required for augmented reality to work.
- JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
lol if it was added for you Robert it would show the cutest girls in the area instead
- Sherry Reynolds
Didn't I hear that Apple had an embargo on AR apps til next month?
- Brian O'Connell
Very cool, thanks for the info. It appears you have to be logged into Yelp though the app before the monocle option will appear.
- Patrick Looney
1st sentence typo in your post Marshall ;o)
- Alex Calic
Couldn't get it to work by "shaking it" but I got it to work by moving my iPhone up and down 3 times in a vertical motion. Pretty damn cool.
- Doug Rice
Marshall, how do you get that camera view? I can't seem to get mine to work. I've shaken and shaken
- Stephen Pickering
Stephen, you should probably just keep shaking. In publish, with lots of people around. :) No, I don't know. I don't have a 3Gs so I don't have a compass so I don't have the Yelp AR.
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
I got it to work and man, is it sweet! So smart.
- Leslie Fishlock
Shake the darn thing 3 times :)- they say that break dancin was learnt , robbing hubcaps of a movin car in NYC.. so lets so what the new thing will be by the time th iphone has all the motion sickness activiated apps !!
- Peter Dawson
I already had 2.0.2, but I'm downloading 3.0 now. I'm not thinking it's going to work in my office, but we'll see.
- RobinDotNet
Ok, that's really cool. It even works sitting here in my office at home.
- RobinDotNet
Downloading now. I am absolutely fascinated by the idea of augmented reality!
- Victoria Harres
This is pretty cool but the shake 3 times thing doesn't work too well
- Jason Wehmhoener
from iPhone
This is fantastic, just activated Monocle. For those having trouble, its best to move/raise and lower the iPhone 3 times vertically instead of just shaking it. I was shaking mine like a madman until I tried the vertical move.
- Bryan
very cool - I can't believe stuff actually shows up near my house on the bay - sweet :)
- Susan Beebe
Damn, guess I'll have to upgrade to the 3GS now.
- Damon Cortesi
I am using the app in Indianapolis to find a restauant. As I guessed the augmented reality is cool but not very useful. Other than to help figure out which direction to walk in.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Argh. I wish I had wifi here so I could download it. A trip to Starbucks might be in order.
- ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
It's innovative and that's awesome, but I think this type of interface will be a passing gimmick until more advanced image processing is built into the mobile device. My thoughts on what does matter about it here - http://bit.ly/12wtcY My $0.02.
- Alex Hawkinson
shake your iPhone 6 times, that activates GoogleVoice
- HansVanRock
I just got this going on my friend's 3Gs. I don't even know what to say. That is freaking incredible! Makes me want a 3Gs *just* for that feature!
- Michael Lynton
Just tried this. Awesome! Too bad I'm in a po' dunk town with nothing to do. :)
- BRҰANSAҰS
Amazing, how on earth did you find it! It's still 6:00 am, perhaps I'll Yelp for breakfast
- Nalin Perera
Wow, I'll have to say this is phenomenal. Wish I'd had this on my trip to D.C. a couple weeks ago. Yelp just made an incredibly useful app even more useful. I've seen a lot of developers working on this technology lately but it looks like they beat everyone to the punch.
- Mike Elliott
I just got the yelp AR to work, and I am staying tonight in a hotel, so I went to my window, and held the camera to the window and it was able to show me reviews of the businesses right across the street from me! I am in love with yelp all over again!
- Colide81 (James)
This youtube video should help you learn how to get it Islandwoo, I think its in how you shake it, I tryed several ways but after I watched this video I did it like the guy in the video and it worked. http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Colide81 (James)
Yeah, you've got to learn to shake it just right! :-)

Evernote - use it every day. Notebooks need to have sections or chapters, and the Mac version needs to add audio recording, but otherwise it's great.

best notetaking for me is my moleskine for on hand, and jott when behind the wheel.
- sean808080
Notepad++ largely, but increasingly using Google Notebook.
- Derrick Burns
Evernote. mostly use it to keep track of real estate listings. (used to use OneNote--haven't opened it in months!)
- Jasmin Smith
Jott for voice notes, Evernote for pictures and text but iPhone produces very blurry and unusable business cards with Evernote so far, needs a focus-adjuster app to be effective.
- Sally Church
Google Notebook. Trying to find practical uses of Evernote. It still doesn't seem to have a collaborating notebooks feature.
- Chris Chua
Evernote, has more flexibilty then Google Notebook. There are a few fearures I would like to added but it does the trick for me.

evernote all the way. rich internet app with clients for most major PC and mobile platforms, and sync to cloud is quick and reliable. text deco of images is a nice bonus. they do need to spend some time observing the list features of OneNote and the search search ux of Spotlight - even the best apps can always improve.
- Jon Price
Right now it's Gmail and IMAP but I am playing with Evernote. I do have concerns though about trusting my info with your cloud. You're doing all the right things. It's just that you're new and I need to get to know you. I trust Gmail.

Honestly, a moleskine notebook and a decent pen. A recent development for me, but it's working great. I get WAY too distracted taking notes on a computer where there are so many fun things I could be doing with my spare seconds! :-)
- Josh Bancroft
I have a voice recorder on my mp3 player and on my phone, but I still mainly use a moleskine and a box of mechanical pencils. Old school, that's me.
- Steven Perez
While on foot, it's either my Nokia N95 8GB or my Moleskine, but with computer access it's either Evernote or Google Docs.

Mail.app. Comes pre-installed. Easy to use. Notes are synchronised across all of my devices (Mac Mini, MacBook and iPhone). Notes are also available online via MobileMe. I don't need to wait for any app to launch since I always have Mail.app running anyway.
- Paul Grav
Evernote is great but needs a printer driver and better inking. OneNote is king on TabletPC's for inking. Evernote is king for syncing.

I guess dedalusjmmr must be unaware that Presidents do weekly radio address.
- Anika
Will comments be allowed? Will it be available on iTunes like it has been for the past..ohh 6 years?
- Mike Lewis
from twhirl
I agree Chris. When I was a kid, I used to listen to the weekly addresses. When the WH started putting the text online, I'd just read it. When they started posting the audio, it made it easier to do it on my time. And I like going back through the archives, though it's annoying that the current way the WH posts the address, no longer give short summaries. This will make it even easier to view/listen when I want.
- Anika
Certainly beats preempting your favourite TV show. "We now return to your regularly scheduled program, already in progress."
- Andrew Smith
What happens to the digitally disenfranchised in these "Fireside" YouTube chats? Is there a plan "B" for them apart from XM?
- Melanie Reed
Melanie the WH has been archiving the transcript and audio on whitehouse.gov for awhile now. The weekly addresses will still be on the radio as they have for the past 80 or so years.
- Anika
Anika, Thank you. I was aware of the WH site for some time. But I was concerned that the DD not be left out. It is good to know that these communications will still be radio-accessible. That is all many of these people have or understand. And that's all right. Their need and wisdom are still very vital.
- Melanie Reed
He wouldn't be the first high government representative doing something like this. Queen Rania of Jordan encouraged a video debate there in the run up to Youth Day in August and the British Royals have a channel there without comments I believe, with archived videos. But I don't think it's a good idea to have the weekly presidential address. At least not JUST in YouTube. Is he doing the video with some other TV or video companies or is it just YouTube?
- Cibeles
I'd love it if Gordon Brown did this, oh wait, no, maybe not. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
"I guess it makes sense that if an hourglass were to have any chance of accurately providing some measure of time, the sand would have to be of a uniform size, consistency and texture. And if any company on Earth were qualified to produce a sand used for timekeeping, it would be Rolex. A single bag of Time Sand flowing through a standard hourglass is the equivalent of 30 days, and the pallets and pallets of sand you see below represent a generous estimation of an average human lifespan. "Okay commenters, we hear you. We won't compare the gorgeous Samsung Memoir mobile phone to the iPhone. We'll just talk about that honking 8-megapixel camera on board, coupled with a xenon flash. Finally, a cell phone with a real camera hits U.S. shores. We have a hunch that lurking underneath that lens is Samsung's remarkable 8.5mm-thick camera module, announced last year, that's capable of some serious photography. Flip it over and there's a big touchscreen running Samsung's TouchWiz user interface. Couple that with an onboard music and video player, 3G connectivity, multimedia messaging, turn-by-turn GPS directions, stereo Bluetooth, and voice dialing, and you a worthy competitor to, uh, lots of other cell phones. Wonder if it can do copy and paste. Look for the Memoir later this month only on T-Mobile, rumored to cost around $299 with a 2-year contract."

Anika said that she listened to BBC 1Extra which kinds surprised me...I watched a documentary about how a lot of Americans read online British newspapers like the Guardian online...
- Zee.
I tend to read the bbc at least a few times a week. (I may skew the results though, as I work in the industry at the NYT)
- Ted Roden
Quite a bit for me--BBC, London Times, Sky and the Guardian are daily reads, but I'm a Yank who keeps an office in London and has season tickets to Arsenal, so I'm probably not representative of most users.
- Andrew Leyden
Sometimes I listen to World Have Your Say on NPR when I'm driving in to work, but that's about it.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
I watch BBC America and subscribed to the BBC news website.
- Sarah Peterman
I used to listen to 1Xtra a lot before they changed the lineups and programming a few years ago. We get the BBC America channel on TV but rarely watch it. That's about it.
- Rochelle
Currently I love How Clean Is Your House and You Are What You Eat - and older shows like The Young Ones and Red Dwarf.
- Jason
Sometimes I'll listen to BBC radio, but I have no clue when or where the BBC tv would be found. I don't watch much tv, so it's radio for this 'colonist'!
- Morgan
Watch BBC-America. I also uh.. find ways ... to watch British television before it hits the US. Most of the news I get is from the BBC.
- Nine
I watch British shows (Doctor Who, Torchwood, Spaced, etc.) when I can, and BBCAmerica when I think about it. I hit the Guardian once in a while, but not regularly.
- Jandy
Surprised you? :) I've been listening to 1Xtra for almost 7 years now. I also listen to the News stations and Radio 3. I don't watch anything besides LOST, but I read several UK dailies and magazines. Like the others, I may be unusual only because I have an unhealthy addiction to politics no matter the country.
- Anika
I went right to TV! But I read BBC news online too.
- Jason
I download hella BBC TV and watch it when its reaired here. I love Being Human, watching the new season of Hustle, Dr. Who of course. I listen to BBC Radio one every now and then, mostly when it has people I like on there.
- Richard Lawler
I am about to watch Masterpiece Classics "Wuthering Heights" and "Sense and Sensibility" right now
- Shevonne
I watch a lot of BBC programming, but I haven't been exposed to any radio yet.
- Joe "Brrzzzzzzt" Pierce
I should add that I have watched British TV shows (I was a serious East Enders addict in my teens), but I usually watch old shows like Are You Being Served, Keeping Up Appearances or As Time Goes By. Older Brits here in the states think I'm adorable for knowing those shows. Younger ones think I'm weird for watching them. <shrug>
- Anika
At 11:00 pm Pacific time, Fox Soccer Channel airs an hour of Sky Sports News. I'll watch it occasionally to get its perspective on various things, including American sports.
- Ontario Emperor
I do BBC TV and radio, as well as read The Guardian and subscribe to a british science magazine whose name escapes me right now. I've found that as far as news goes, I prefer something that is completely lacking that "American spin". :)
- Hookuh Tinypants
I listen to bBC World Service sometimes if I can't sleep.
- Mol, FF Music Lover
This is fascinating. So what is on BBC America? Is that like BBC 1 over there or a selection from all BBC channels? You guys need to listen to Radio 1 more, especially Zane Lowe. I believe Radio 1 is on a station in the US and is timed delayed to match in the UK (i.e. Zane Lowe is on at 7pm here and also 7pm in the US).
- Kol Tregaskes
I guess we in the UK watch a lot of US TV shows but I still find the radio and newspaper thing odd. Why do you like 1Extra over a US station Anika and why do u guys prefer to read the BBC or the guardian over a US publication? One more question, do u reckon we'll one day have a "global Online dominant news site"? Iris that already the BBC?
- Zee.
Listened to the Beeb on shortwave when I was a teen-ager and watched BBC World News off and on over the past several years. Regularly browse the Times and Telegraph websites. Subscribe to the Economist. Some of this because U.S. equivalents either don't exist or don't have the same level of international coverage. Also, it's interesting to read on U.S. news from the outsider's perspective.
- Charles Fenwick
wow and Eastenders Anika?? Unbelievable... :P But pretty damn cool I reckon
- Zee.
I get there sometimes. Get BBC America on Dish Network and BBC World on XM.
- Eric
I used to listen to BBC Radio at my old job.
- Nine
I'm a huge Anglophile. 70% of my TV watching time is spent watching BBC America. I download, rent, or buy certain BBC shows if they aren't available to watch on BBC America, and I occasionally (if I have the time or if the topic/guest interests me) listen to some programs on BBC Radio. bbc.co.uk is my homepage and I tend to prefer getting my news from British publications/websites — largely for the same reason as Amanda, no "American spin".
- Penguin
I started reading newspapers from other countries when I worked for a think tank, and BBC was one of them. I really liked their format and writing style, so I still go to it.
- Shevonne
I listen to BBC podcasts now and then (Radio 1 through 6) and sometimes to the streams. I watch BBC America shows when they intrest me (little tv does anymore) and grew up on rebroadcasts of BBC productions on local PBS stations. BBC World Report in the mornings I am awake and remember.
- Michael W. May
BBC America is pretty awful vs. the full library of the BBC. We get some newer programs, occasionally, but always quite a bit late and you have to sit through endless 'Crap in the Attic' and other rather tedious programming. For example Season 1 of Ashes to Ashes will start next month, nearly a year after it ran in the UK (and most people downloaded the torrents). They're trying to do better, have more cutting edge current programming, but during the day it's pretty awful
- Andrew Leyden
I listen to BBC when broadcast on the local public radio station
- Sally - Skyrimmin' It
I started listening to 1Xtra one night with my husband. They were playing all this old dub. Been hooked ever since. I read papers from other countries to get a different viewpoint. It amuses me to see what a politician is willing to say to the BBC, but would never say to an American paper.
- Anika
Kol, I'll back up Andrew on the horridness of BBC America. It's like BBC light. Most of the shows I've seen advertised on there are usually already available on DVD.
- Anika
Yep, local NPR affiliate has World Service running 10pm-4am, and The World (BBC/WBGH/PRI). Lucy Kellaway's contributions are always good for a laugh.

D'uh, I forgot the TV shows I watch (ie. Torchwood, Dr. Who, Are You Being Served?, The Young Ones, Ab Fab....). I also subscribe to the BBC Entertainment feed at Twitter.

BBC news is way better in the morning. They never try and be cute and I love that.
- MarkCarras
Watch a few BBC America programs (Top Gear, Dragons Den, sometimes Ramsay stuff) , online I regularly read the BBC and the Times Online, sometimes Guardian online - and miss the Sunday papers from London ...

All the time. I'd gladly give the Beeb a "TVTax" to be able to watch iPlayer. Beeb programming is a hundred fold better than anything here in the States.

I don't get why the Beeb doesn't allow other countries to see their stuff online? I'd do anything to watch TV shows there. I just recently got into Mi-5 and I used to watch EastEnders (the local PBS station played it and then BBC America showed it for a while). I had a HUGE crush on Wicksy (Nick Barry). :P

I download all the British podcasts I can get every day, watch a good bit of BBCA, and look at the BBC news site once or twice a week. We don't get much in the way of in-depth international news, although NPR does a pretty good job with recognizing that there are other places on the planet besides USA.

I download the BBC Newspod podcast every day, in addition to watching BBC World News on BBC America.

I'm quite shocked how popular BBC-related stuff is outside of the UK. Amazing. Good really, I browse lots of news sites from all over the place but the BBC sites are still the best, the TV is by far the best (beats anything on Sky and Cable) and their radio shows, especially Radio 1 is top class. Why? Well apart from the quality of programmes, there are no bloody adverts!!! :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
For people not just in America but around the World, I've worked with several people that tell me the BBC World Service is excellent. What do you think?

Zee, I don't listen to US radio because the hip-hop they play sucks. I can only hear Garth Trinidad *maybe* play some Dancehall.1Xtra, plays all of the music I like (except drum & bass, I got over that in the mid-90s). I get to hear songs in the comfort of my own home. Otherwise, I'd have to go to an indie record store for suggestions.
- Anika
BBC World News is better than almost anything we have here in the US... Newshour with Jim Lehrer is the only program I'd say is on par or perhaps slightly better
- Jeffrey Canton
We listen to the BBC World News on our XM radio a lot. It's refreshing to have a news report that's not totally focused on US problems (there are other people in the world with problems too).

I'm an American living in London, but consume very little British media... don't even have broadcast TV service. I occasionally watch shows through BBC iPlayer (Hustle and Little Britain are faves). I also read Guardian Web site pretty regularly. I watch a lot of US TV and movies, primarily through iTunes, Netflix and Hulu.

AWESOME, thanks, Louis!! A step in the right direction for 12seconds, and they totally beat you-know-who (Qik) to the app store. 3 pics and audio is better than nothing from the iPhone. I just posted mine!
- mandyvan
Mandy, I am merely an aggressive sharer. :-)
- Louis Gray
If they are going to charge, shouldn't it be 12 cents?
- Shevonne
Mona: they have no funding and are trying to build a real business!
- Robert Scoble
Good for them, but I will wait for Qik - no other Soc Nets charge for their iPhone apps! And I am not investing in a company that has no funding, even if it is 99cents!
- Mona Nomura
It's not like venture capitalists are experts at picking companies, either - check out the deadpool.
- Shawn Farner
Mona - so you'll invest in a company with no revenue/business model but NOT one that has no funding but expects to make money... wow... just... wow
- Brian Roy
What if Qik all of a sudden said they was going to charge for their app?
- Outsanity
What makes 12seconds stand out, Shawn?
- Mona Nomura
Mona, would you not use a product just because the company that make it has no funding?
- Amit Morson
They're always adding features, but most importantly, they might be the last ones standing :). They know how to not burn through money and right now, that's perfect.
- Shawn Farner
it doesn't make videos, just 3 pics if I read the description right
- Clarence Westberg
I will not use them because they are charging for an app and have no funding. They do not stand out enough for me to want to actually support them. (I have been on 12seconds since July)
- Mona Nomura
The only thing I can say is they need some apps for phones that actually does video but, better than nothing at all, right?
- Outsanity
I have them, but don't use them. I had issues with trying to get my Mac to work with their service. I stuck with Seesmic due to that.
- Shevonne
MacBook or iMac? Mines works fine with them
- Outsanity
The bigger question is when is Qik coming out?!
- Elijah Nicolas
Can't believe people are carping about 99 cents, skip a 5 mile drive in your SUV

It's not the price, it's the principle.
- Mona Nomura
@Outsanity - The Macbook. I actually went on a few forums and it seems like others have been having issues as well
- Shevonne
Mona - OK I'll by that... what is the principal? That you only use stuff from funded companies?
- Brian Roy
@Shevonne, is the camera source on "USB Video Class Video"? I assume the MB cam is the same setting as on the iMac. If anything, you can email them about this issue.
- Outsanity
Qik works great on the N95, but I haven't tried 12seconds. The issue here seems to be reaching out to your existing social networks on other sites to let them know you've got something posted.
- Mr. Gunn
I did two weeks ago and never received a response. Maybe they have resolved it. I'll check it out tonight.
- Shevonne
No. I have said this repeatedly in this thread: They are charging, when no other Social Networks are, in addition to not being funded. Not only that, their app does not support video - which is what their site is about. I don't know about you, but that is beyond bizarre to me.
- Mona Nomura
OK - so the principle is that social networks shouldn't charge users - you won't join/participate in one that does. Did I get that right? BTW I'm not snarking at you, just trying to understand.
- Brian Roy
I find it weird people will charge for a Twitter app and people buy them
- Outsanity
Charging for use and charging for apps are two separate things - 12seconds is releasing an app (that does not even DO what the site is about) for 99cents. There is way too much competition out there, what sets them aside? I do not believe in them, so I do not want to invest my time and or money. And Brian, it takes a lot to offend me, but thank you for the courtesy. :)
- Mona Nomura
It's a glorified slideshow with audio not video, where is Qik?
- Justin Fowler
Mona - OK, got it. And like I tell my kids - There is no excuse for failing to be polite :)
- Brian Roy
Seems like a good work around for a (i)phone that doesn't do video unless you jailbreak. I mean, the problem is with Apple not 12seconds. 12seconds has tried to come up with a (i)phone option for their users. This is a company that has spent less than 100k to get operational and I believe they all still have day jobs. I'll try it out for .99; what the heck.
- Kenley Neufeld
i think Kenley hit the nail on the head. 12seconds are not at fault.
- Outsanity
I don't think it's Apple's fault, I'm throwing blame at AT&T telling Apple not to allow it because their network can't handle it.
- Justin Fowler
Bottomline: different strokes for different folks. That is the beauty of choices. :) And I disagree the fault lies with Apple. Big picture, people. Big picture.
- Mona Nomura
I don't know Mona. Just seems like a company like Apple could provide two key things on their phones: video and copy/paste. Of course, I'm just playing with 12seconds and remembering how Twitter started out (the question then was, why?). I still ask that a bit about 12seconds, but trying anyway. I do like seesmic too.
- Kenley Neufeld
Mona - This is Sol one of the founders of 12seconds. I hear you. Our app and our product isn't for everyone. However, we have every right to try to create revenue. We're doing our best given that Apple doesn't allow video and a huge percentage of our users have iPhones (and don't want to jailbreak it). 12seconds is about sharing moments, not live streaming video. We think the app accomplishes this. AND we think it is worth 99 cents (which isn't very much).
- Sol
@ Shevonne "I did two weeks ago and never received a response. Maybe they have resolved it. I'll check it out tonight. - Shevonne Polastre" -------- I'm sorry if that slipped through the cracks. Please email me at david@12seconds.tv and we'll try to sort out your issue. Selecting the USB Class Video option would have been my first piece if advice as well. I'm sure we can get you straight.
- drs650
I think it looks pretty cool. Such negativity for .99. I paid 9.99 for MonkeyBall and I think I've played it once.
- James Hull
It's a slideshow with audio........... not exactly what I would want. Qik and Ustream both have iPhone apps in the queue. If they get approved, I hope 12seconds follows up with a video app
- Bwana ☠
Come January we should see a software upgrade from apple allowing video recording apps to run on all iPhones. So hang in there for a month.
- vijay
But why would people use this? What real-life problem does it solve? Is it just for fun and games? I don't get 12seconds.tv, personally.
- Jesse Stay
I downloaded it and think it's great, love the Ken Burns effect and the 3 pics may work out better than pics, I think they have stumbled upon a great app
- Clarence Westberg
Believe me... if iphone video recording was an option, we'd be all over it. If @vijay is correct, then we'd be very very happy. However the output is video, you are essentially making a video in the end, it's just all ken burnsy ;) Thanks to everyone for your support! We totally appreciate it. (12seconnds co-founder)
- David Beach
Sorry guys, in my earlier comment I said we should see video support via s/w upgrade soon, but a comment in another thread made me think about the EVIL that holds back iPhone - at&t. Video apps + support might be filtered out by at&t based on bandwidth concerns, like they did with removing podcaster and apple's 50 MB podcast limit. It's something we should have in the back of our heads.
- vijay
@drs650 - Thanks! I am going to check it out when I get home. If anything, I will email you.
- Shevonne
I don't really get what 12seconds is about, but dissing their app for being "not what the site is about"? seriously? Mona - you do know that video is just a series of photos strung together right?
- Jon Price
This is very strategic to me. Granted, their 99cent price will get them less takers, but once the iPhone sdk allows video capture, they will be on it like butter on a hot potato and release an update, and will be the 1st app on iPhone with video capabilities. Prob easier getting an update of an app through instead of a fresh app...
- Shazron Abdullah
they ripped me off... i talked about this same concept weeks ago on seesmic for a seesmic iphone app. I've been working on it over a month.
- Zac Bowling
@ernie: but it has no apps and not even 1% market share ;)
- Jemm
Because clearly market share has an effect on your ability to use the OS. And it has plenty of apps. The place I'm feeling the app hurt is Windows more than linux. I agree with none of these other than the OS X one. Has to be one of the more useless OSes I've ever come across, compared to price and availability
- Daniel Bruce
most of my consternation with windows is with shoddy 3rd party applications. Windows itself rarely causes me a problem. People need to learn the difference between shitty apps crashign and windows itself being the root of a problem. Learn where the fault is then lay the blame :P
- alphaxion
Can't we just agree that different systems suit different people or contexts? For me, Mac OS X is ideal(and far from useless), but I work with a lot of devs who would rather use Linux or another Unix derivative, and we have some who use Windows.
- Sam
oh I have no problems with other people using other OS'es (I prefer RISC OS myself), I just object to people laying blame without knowing where the blame should be.
- alphaxion
As someone who's seen the original anime, it's a great comparison to the characters. OSes can't seriously be summed up in 3-5 words each, but this is all in good fun.
- Brent Newhall
@alphaxion But that would cause some actual critical thinking on some people's part and that's really just too much to ask.

go strawberry marsmallow! also true, true, true and true.

I'm using Ubuntu as my main workstation at work for more than 3 years. Does that sound boring and/or useless?
- imabonehead
I would actually switch the descriptions for Windows and Linux. For the record, I'm on a Mac but have used Linux as primary desktop for 3 years (2004-2007)
- Saket Vaidya
If I could get Coda to work on Ubuntu, I'd use linux more often.

great line in their company bio: "If it’s not good for the user then it’s not worth doing." wish every product creation company had the same mindset.

zee - would love an invite (am in Europe for a few days)
- Frederic
just sent to your lastpodcast address Frederic...where u at in Europe & for how long?
- Zee.
On the downside there is no social functionality and the genre list on the radio is a bit limited. Would be wicked with some last.fm type stuff to enhance browsing and discovery.
- Dave Pook
Sounds interesting. Can't wait to try it out! But I do wonder how long they'll last with the whole free music thing.
- deepikaur
Sorry cch, looks like I don't have any invites left.
- Brandon Titus
My girlfriends cousin is part of the team, I'm glad to see it getting some recognition now. Library of tracks availabe to free users has dropped a bit, and i often see songs from my playlists marked as not available, or set to not available in the UK, but overall, i love it. Shared playlists is awesome, we should set up a friendfeed one! every one add a track. I have a bunch of invites if anyone's still after them.
- Simon Wicks
Amazing App.... The best one for listen music... !!!

"I would love to have heard more about how to lay off, because that’s one thing I’ve seen a raft of startups do lately. How do you decide who needs to go? At PodTech I often wished our management HAD fired people (even if it were me) because it would have added a lot of focus. I also really got tired of seeing dead weight being allowed to stick around, even as times got tougher. I love your ideas, though. I’m working on a few of these at FastCompanyTV right now."

Thoughtful advise from unusual perspective. My favorite is #5 - Automate Bad News. Every company I worked in suffered from slow bad news propagation syndrome.

Recession or no, focusing on contraction shrinks the pie; better to focus on creating a larger pie instead.

Best place to take a date in San Francisco. Why? It's always cold up there. If a girl doesn't want to snuggle with you up there she won't want to snuggle with you anywhere. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I really don't see the issue -- unless you are providing your own service -- each of these is about as likely as the other of failing. Stopping using one and using another doesn't really solve any problem.
- Brian Sullivan
I had never run into the problem and I always use tinyurl.
- Eric
I use TinyURL as much as I can. is.gd fills in during times of slowness.
- Louis Gray
I only use it for stuff on Twitter and FF. If the link gets broken it's not the end of the world. If it is critical then I wouldn't use any of these services.
- Kenton
Didn't one of those services die? I'm going to use what's popular, in the hopes that it will be more likely to survive than its upstart competitors.
- MiniMage, enterRUPPted
I love Bit.ly analytics are the best part about it, using the bookmarklet and support and TweetDeck are also great.
- Mark Krynsky
I was using is.gd for a while until I heard about bit.ly. It has many more features. The best I can tell of all URL shortening services. tr.im looks cool but it does not have enough features to make me want to switch from bit.ly. Yet.
