JonTheNiceGuy shared an idea in Gowalla "Support StatusNet in Gowalla" - http://getsatisfaction.com/gowalla...
I see you recently added support for Twitter, can I ask that you let us also be able to pick the Base URL of the API? I only ask because StatusNet (the software behind the site identi.ca) has the same API, but with a different root URL. Many of us on Identi.ca want to see more support for StatusNet, and by using the Twitter API, you're nearly there :) - Jon Spriggs

I'd like you to support StatusNet, which is a distributed twitter-like service, which has the same API as Twitter. The primary site for StatusNet is identi.ca. - Jon Spriggs

JonTheNiceGuy replied to the idea "Identi.ca" in Thing Labs - http://getsatisfaction.com/thingla...
To be fair as well, supporting "identi.ca" alone isn't really enough, it should be "Support anything which has a twitter-like API"... which is a point - does Brizzly already support multiple twitter accounts (I think it does) and if so, it should be pretty straightforward to add StatusNet (the software which drives identi.ca) sites, as they nearly all use the Twitter API, from a different URL, thus, if you make it so that the "Add your twitter account" box has another option which says "Base URL for the API" (that defaults to Twitter's), those of us who use identi.ca, army.twit.tv, birdbrain etc. can add our StatusNet servers to the Brizzly feeds with very little impact to your already impressive site! - Jon Spriggs

Twitter SEO - The Slow Death of Twitter Hash Tags - http://www.searchenginejournal.com/twitter...
My problem with hash tags is that they are grafted on to Twitter, they're not an organic part of using Twitter. - Eoghann Irving
Twitter can always integrate hashtag functionality into the service if they feel like it. They did the same for the various flavors of @replies, didn't they? - Daniel J. Pritchett
They could do, but they haven't. Currently you have to work to find the appropriate hashtag to use. and what ends up happening is you get lots of variations on the same thing. It's messy. - Eoghann Irving
Seems like they are working just fine to me. I have no issue dealing with some messiness. The benefits of that messiness far outweigh any alternative. - Kevin Gamble
Quite right - folksonomy is what it is. I do like suggested tags like the ones you might find on Delicious, but I'm having trouble seeing that work on Twitter. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Eoghann: I thought #hastags are a very organic part of twitter - they grew out of people using the service and not through the service.... much like RT - Paul Kinlan
They miss the utility of Hashtags as hooks for other clients. I use an addon where if I add #fb to the end, it updates my facebook status with my tweet. - Matthew DeVries
I don't think they miss the utility of Hashtags - they are building a communications platform they shouldn't limit their growth by stopping people from developing on top of it. What happens if people stop using hashtabs and start using "-" and "+" for topics they like etc.... actually that is a good idea - I might start that up :) - Paul Kinlan
Paul I second this excellent +idea. It's by far better than -hashtags ! - Jean-Charles VERDIE
Jean-Charles: LOL :) Just tweeting +DeathToHashTags: I am starting something. For every topic I like in a tweet I will prefix with a +, for everything I don't a - -hashtag - Paul Kinlan
Paul: But they don't integrate at all. You have to go to an external directory to find what tags are being used for certain subjects. They're just a very ugly hack bolted on top of Twitter. - Eoghann Irving
The whole thing smacks of *facepalm*... 2 RTs and few "#hashtags" leaves how many letters? - Richard pancakhaus Walker
Eoghann: Like I said, I don't think they need to integrate anything really - the service and how people use it grows as people use it, by Twitter "implementing" hashtags limits people to just hashtags.. - Paul Kinlan
Laconica (see http://identi.ca for the canonical implementation of Laconica) has hash-tags built in from the outset. Very nice system. - Jon Spriggs
I just don't see the point of building it in - now laconica is stuck with hashtags - whats happens when the next meme comes along and people stop using hash tags? - Paul Kinlan
They move to Friendfeed. - Matthew DeVries

I was thinking of using the original post as a UUID or some other identifier, and each comment as a revision of the content associated with the identifier, but I don't have a use case for that yet. - Mark Trapp
Mark, doesn't that sound like the way that Google Wave publishes changes, each comment being a commutive change to the original object.... heck, wouldn't it be funny if you could use FriendFeed as a Wave server. - Paul Kinlan
That's true. FriendFeed could even become a Wave provider. - Mark Trapp
I am not sure about wave ID's, I know the participants are addressed with JID's which are very similar to email addresses. I tell you, when I saw this question, I was like WTF, why? but it has dawned on me that you can do pretty cool things with it. - Paul Kinlan
I have been thinking about this more - I really like the idea. - Paul Kinlan
Wave is an extension to XMPP (AKA Jabber) - hence using JIDs. I don't think this has anything to do with the top level comment, but I just thought I'd mention it :) - Jon Spriggs
It would be really funny if someone (such as the Friendfeed team) released a functioning Wave server before Google. - Raphael, Raphael

This issue serves only to highlight the problem of Closed Source Software and Cloud Computing issues. My solution? Start trying to encourage your friends to look at identi.ca - an open source project with an open standard driving it. This is the Open Micro Blogging standard, and is used to allow federated conversations between two servers. Don't like the way identi.ca does things? Take all your data and the website's source code and put it on your own server. Identi.ca, and the software which drives it (laconica) has a bridge to twitter, so your updates can still be seen by the people who haven't moved to a more open platform (although, you still can't see what they are saying directly through that bridge yet) and a large number of the Twitter clients can also be re-configured to work with Laconica based systems - especially identi.ca. I hope to see some of you there! - Jon Spriggs

JonTheNiceGuy replied about 1 hour to the idea "identi.ca sharing" in Brightkite - http://getsatisfaction.com/brightk...
Hi Guys, I'm just wondering if there's any plans to do anything with this suggestion? The Twitter-like API for Laconica based sites is complete, and the two main laconica based sites (http://identi.ca and http://army.twit.tv) each have hundreds, if not thousands of Internet literate people on them. I use identi.ca as my microblogging hub, and I'd love to see Brightkite give this system some love! As well as being feature complete with Twitter's API, Laconica sites also have the benefit of being in active, public development, with the intention that Laconica sites should be able to run on nearly any PHP based webhosting... so the potential for tie-ins is pretty huge! To implement this, you could amend your existing twitter-link, asking people to state the API base - whereas Twitter uses http://twitter.com/, identi.ca (in common with all Laconica systems) have their API base at http://identi.ca/api/ The guys at ControlYourself (who run identi.ca and do most of the code development... - Jon Spriggs

JonTheNiceGuy shared an idea in Posterous 4 minutes Posterous could be the TwitPic for Laconica based systems with very little work! - http://getsatisfaction.com/postero...
I'm a user of the Microblogging Platform called Laconica, which is a distributed, run-nearly-anywhere, open source, microblogging system. It has a twitter-like API, so your back-end code for posting to twitter could be reused, with very little work. If you use http://twitter.com/statuse..., the equivalent for Laconica is http://laconica_platform/api....... Laconica API calls require the base URL (for example, the reference implementation of Laconica is http://identi.ca), the username (e.g. jontheniceguy) and password. I'd be really glad to help out or beta test this! - Jon Spriggs

As well as Twitter, I also use http://Identi.ca, which is the reference implementation of the Laconi.ca Software. Laconi.ca (http://laconi.ca) uses the same APIs and basic structure as Twitter, but is federated (which would mean Mr. Tweet could set up your own Laconi.ca site, should you so desire, or use the identi.ca site, or one of the 20 or so other implementations). I'd love to see the features you've implemented on Twitter being accommodated on Laconi.ca, and I think that it might result in more take-up of your services. I'd certainly be using it! - Jon Spriggs

JonTheNiceGuy shared an idea in 83 Degrees 3 minutes Support for Laconica - http://getsatisfaction.com/83degre...
Hi there! I'd love to see the fantastic functionality you've built for Twitter into an add-on for other Microblogging sites - my particular interest is for Laconica based sites, like Identi.ca and army.twit.tv? What do you think? The API for Laconica is based on the Twitter API (http://laconi.ca/trac/wiki/API). Because Laconica is an open source project, it may be possible to integrate some of the features you've written into T3 directly into the Laconica code base... which would be great! - Jon Spriggs
