The Australia Institute economist Richard Dennis says there are countless examples of how current policy settings counter efforts to mitigate climate change: Governments spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year subsidising oil exploration and extraction; There are subsidies to offset increasing petrol costs, which mute the incentive to get cars off the road; The fringe benefits tax ensures that the more employees drive, the greater tax concession they receive; and so on...

The Great Google Wave invite thread. Anyone who wants an invite post your Gmail address here and anyone who has invites available please use to invite the people on this list. There are also a bunch of requests in the Invites group here: http://friendfeed.com/invites
I have a few but holding them for a few people who have already asked me. I'm at kolint [at] googlewave [dot] com btw. A pain I know but if you can, could you update your comment when you have an account or just delete your comment. Ta! :-) EDIT: Try this site for invites: http://googlewaveinvites.com/
- Kol Tregaskes
Are people on this list getting invites or at least been told they have an invite on the way? You might have to be patient, it could take a long time for one to come through.
- Kol Tregaskes
Adam, yep agree. Maybe because I did that (month ago though) helped me get mine through from Vijay so quickly!
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol, the invitation process seems to be based on nominations. For example, everytime someone nominates/invites you, you get bumped up the queue for an account until you're at the top and you get sent an invite by the team
- Ysabel Legaspi
Ysabel, ah I see, So lots of people must have nominated me. Darn, so a few users I have nominated could be waiting a looooong time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
if that voting system is right I'm very annoyed. I asked for an invite months ago, now all the numpties are all over it I'm not going to get a look in. It's like I've been sat at the front of a shop queue and everyone's just walking right past me into the shop. I am British but I detest both queuing and waiting, so this is pretty tough going

I know more about the "Last Days" and heaven than I know about what's going to happen to FriendFeed as we have come to know it than was given in Paul's rather cryptic answer. You usually withhold details that affect another party and to...

Ken: good point, i almost stopped to mention it after my comment about metamorphosis since it doesn't really make a lot of sense if paul says ff is transforming (which he didn't he said it's in chrysalis - which means it will be transforming, but not yet)
- Chris Heath
Except he didn't say FF is in chrysalis either, Chris. He could be talking about Facebook.
- Ken Sheppardson
But honestly, I haven't seen this much interpretation, re-interpretation, reading between the lines, hashing and rehashing and "what he probably/really meant was..." since the last time Alan Greenspan testified before congress.
- Ken Sheppardson
What's Greenspan's stand on FF. I must know. Now.
- Micah Wittman
Ken: maybe he's talking about facebook there, but i thought he was responding to the accusations that friendfeed is dead, not 'why hasn't facebook added any cool features recently?'
- Chris Heath
My Blue Cross Claim that just posted makes me realize even more how broken our healthcare system is. Admitted to Stanford at 7:30pm on 9/30 to give birth to Penny, discharged at 2pm on 10/2. There were no major medical procedures, no anesthesia, and Penny didn't need any special testing. Cost of stay: 20,654.30... ridiculous!!
One night in a hospital = $7,841.00; Nursery Care = $2,318.00; Hospital labs and "extras" = $10,495.30; ... Going home with a shiny new Penny = PRICELESS
- Nathan Diehl
holy moly.. did this include all you can eat french fries from the cafeteria? I can't imagine what the bill would have been should you have needed anything else... wow.
- Erin "Wifey" Johns
Yeah, it's really shocking. Factor in a normal stay which is an additional night, and an epidural, and I'm sure the cost would have been more than double. So crazy!
- Georgia Diehl
I'm sure if you didn't have insurance it would have been less.
- Brian Johns
Brian, NO Blue Cross et all usually negotiate discounts because of bulk buying so uninsured rates are routinely higher
- WarLord
Without 'insurance-negotiated rates it would probably have been double. That's been my experience. Is the 20K put of pocket, or total before coverage?
- Kevin Fox
from iPhone
Yeah, mine was about the same for a stay of the same length, no complications or anesthesiology, etc. :/
- Rochelle
The "cash discount" I was offered with my surgery was about the same as what the insurance eventually covered.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
Georgia cost me nothing except the $600 Medicare levy I paid in my taxes at the end of the year
- Johnny Worthington
My (very limited) experiences with healthcare in America have always come with offers of a lower price if you save them the hassle of dealing with insurance and just pay them. Perhaps my experiences are not typical, representative, or statistically accurate.
- Brian Johns
The 20k was not the negotiated rate, it was the billed rate. Blue Shield only paid about 7.5k to Stanford.
- Georgia Diehl
Brian in MN AG filed suit over the diference in hospital billing rates charged Insurance companies and uninsured people. Insurance companies enjoyed substantial discounts on every procedure at every hospital
- WarLord
I heard an interesting comment on NPR about how few employees at hospitals even know how much their services cost. Apparently the pricing is quite fluid, and somewhat secret before you actually have a procedure done.
- Brian Johns
When I went to the emergency room with abdominal pain and got a CT with contrast and a 6 hour stay the base cost was $18k. Truly hard to imagine abdominal pain costing the same as a baby.
- Kevin Fox
from iPhone
Kevin, maybe it was the same thing and they stole your offspring while you were medicated or looking the other way!
- joey
This is a perfect example of the problem. The problem is the prices are too high. No plan proposed (that I am aware) reduces the prices. All of the proposals merely spread the high prices over a larger group of people. Unless we reduce the prices nothing is solved.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
from fftogo
MVB of course part of the high cost is shifting expenses from uninsured in the emergency room on to the rest of the payors. The high cost of walk aways is ended with coverall insurance. No uninsured automatically ends cost shifting
- WarLord
Every insurer has a maximum that they will pay for any given procedure, so every healthcare provider sets their rates to be so high that they get the maximum out of every insurer as often as possible.
- Gabe
WOW these prices are downright scary - wow. WHY does the medical industry charge so much?!
- Susan Beebe
Susan: In regards to the uninsured it's because they don't tell you the prices until after you've had the procedures and there's little to nothing you can do but pay it (taking out a home equity loan if needed) or try to go to court, which rarely works. I don't always like federal price-fixing, but there are cases where it's needed unless hospitals make their price menus freely available so people can comparison shop and exert market forces.
- Kevin Fox
Dang, we had a C Section and it cost about half of that. Memphis TN 2007.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Edit... I see your insurer only paid $7.5 I am a bit less confused now. I don't remember seeing a hospital bill, just the BCBS bill showing what my 10% of major medical copay was.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
When we had our son (admittedly almost 13 years ago) we were dirt poor. We had insurance and just laughed when we got the first bill for like 10K+ (I don't even remember how much it was because I blocked it out... there was absolutely no way we could pay it). We didn't pay... got another bill in a month saying the insurance had picked up a few thousand... did that a few more times......

Wow, that is crazy. In Australia, we had our kids in a private hospital, with our choice of doctors, epidurals, 5 nights in a private room (overlooking the river), kid in the nursery every night, physio visits and tests and medicine for less than $6000 each time (covered by insurance). If we'd gone to a public hospital, we still would have had a choice of doctor, had a share room, and it wouldn't have cost a cent.

We paid about $400 (to the OB/GYN) for Josiah, plus another couple of hundred each for the anaesthetist and paediatrician. Also odd is the entry under Help -> Keyboard Shortcuts which shows this option click as "Zoom the window to an ideal size". Certainly not obvious that this means to switch to the mini-player.

I agree, Keith. I wonder what grand design scheme they're following. Why change it at all?

And now iTunes 9.0.1 "Addresses an issue with the Zoom button not switching to Mini Player."
- Christopher Harley
The podcast thing was more annoying, but that's fixed in 9.01 as well
- mikepk
What was the podcast issue? I never noticed any change. Or did I?
- Christopher Harley
I guess it's more annoying if you manually managed the podcast interface. Issue: if there were no episodes of a podcast already present, it was impossible to refresh just that one podcast. You had to hit the "Refresh" button on the lower right of the screen and refresh everything.
- mikepk
I guess I didn't notice. Whenever I refreshed individual podcasts, I always went to the title and choose Update Podcast from the contextual menu.
- Christopher Harley
Right, that stopped working if there were no episodes already in your list in that podcast, the context menu was missing the 'Update Podcast' option.

Chevy Chase has a new TV series this Fall.. gotta dig up the info for it.. It's called Community/30 Rock on at 9:30 pm Thursdays on NBC starting on the 17th. I guess it's a rehashed version of 30 Rock.. SNL actors' crazy lives. I think I'll give this show a try, never seen 30 Rock though.

Racing Destruction Set. Spent many hours on that game.

Paradroid. Impossible Mission, Great Gianna Sisters, Gyruss, Fort Apocalypse, Montezuma's Rvenge and Maniac Mansion were also favorites. I feel I should also mention Radar Rat Race. Not the best game, but for a long time it was the only game I had. It was a shameless clone of Rally-X with an incredibly annoying soundtrack.
- Laurence Gonsalves
Wow, Rally-X and Montezuma's Revenge, forgot those! Also, F-15 Strike Eagle and Gunship, plus Silent Service. As much as I love modern console games, I gotta say, staying up all night with Racing Destruction Set and friends or M.U.L.E. has never been equalled.

I think yojimbo looks really good, and is a first class Mac app, but the lack of a web-based version, and notebook sharing means I have to stick with Evernote. Which is a shame, because Evernote is ugly.
- Jordan Brock
from iPhone
tried it this am. looks really nice but some overlap with Evernote in my sense
- Ouriel Ohayon
I have always been using and always on the lookout for a good personal info organizer app, what I really want is ability to add text notes in the most simplistic way possible, rather than taking the time to characterize what goes in as 'note' 'bookmark' etc which is what yojimbo needs, I would like to store only the most recent data for faster searching in my local system and store...
- TrafficBug
Funny, an app called Yojimbo :) (I saw the movie of the same name, recently)
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Evernote definitely has the advantage of being cross-platform and internet-enabled (though I think Yoyimbo does the latter too).
- Vincent van Wylick
I moved to Evernote from Yojimbo. Main reason was Evernote has an iPhone app.
- Simon Tracey
I used Yojimbo for a couple of years but have now adopted Together. I prefer the way Together stores stuff in a Finder searchable format. If Together goes to the wall my stuff is all stored in a simple folder. The library also syncs nicely with MobileMe.
- Gilbert Harding
I used to be a big fan of Yojimbo a few years ago. But I switched to Evernote a while ago, and while Yojimbo 2.0 seems pertty cool, its sharing and syncing features are nowhere near those of EN.
- Rubin Sfadj
Well that is what they have said, and when I said I would never give any passwords to anyone else, I was told they could help me no further (all communication was via email)!
- Mark McAneny
They most likely wanted it so they could use screen sharing on your mac to help with your issue.
- Corey Harris
Asking for your password shows the paucity of their troubleshooting skills. Get the issue bumped to second-tier support.
- Richard Hudak
This was supposed to be Second Tier support. It's taken over a week to get that far!
- Mark McAneny
Richard.. asking for your password more than likely shows a weakness of the tools support is using (and probably security concerns), not a lack of troubleshooting skills.
- Tim Hoeck
I work in support for a game company, if a company asks for your PW they should ask you to change it to something generic and easy. (ig Apple123) Then let them access it, they should also not let you off the phone until they've confirmed you've changed it back...They shouldn't ask you over email, ever. 100% unsafe.
- Aaron M. Clay
+1 Aaron - but I would still be nervous, especially if the account includes payment information or personal files.
- Bill Sodeman
"A Digitimes report, based on insider information from sources at Taiwan handset makers, suggests that Microsoft has readied a dual-platform strategy to take on the Android platform and Apple's iPhone. Under this strategy, Microsoft will not withdraw Windows Mobile 6.5 from the market even after Windows 7 Mobile is released during the fourth quarter of 2010. Instead, it will keep Windows Mobile 6.5 – a minor upgrade – on the market, albeit at a lower price point."
- Oğuz Serdar
from Bookmarklet
I think Digitimes got it wrong, from the other articles I've read. MS' plan is to keep WM 6.5 as a base solution and WM 7 for elite/more capable phones. That way, it can attack both the high end Android/BB/iPhone devices and whatever low end Android devices roll out later this year. Also, there's been some indication that Windows Mobile will be rebranded Windows Phone. I'm assuming that...
- LANjackal
wait.. so they are pitting 6.5 against Android? Hah! And Win7 mobile won't be out until 4th quarter 2010? That is funny.
- Tim Hoeck
yeah, saying MS is behind in this case is probably the understatement of the year
- LANjackal
"Quake Live is essentially a reworked version of Quake 3 Arena, designed for free play in a Web browser using a plug-in. Users create an account and play against each other. The game features more than 40 arenas and five game modes. You can play against other gamers or practice and compete on your own against “bots,” or computer-controlled players. The game first went online as a public beta version earlier this year, but only for Windows users. Id Software’s Marty Stratton noted that Quake Live for Mac was a top priority when he posted about the status of the game’s developments to Id Software’s forums this past May."

Justin.tv has asked us to use them for streaming. I'm also considering Kyte. Any preferences? We have one more slot.
- Leo Laporte
Mogulus is cool because its web interface gives you many of the features the TriCaster has. If the TriCaster ever went down, Leo could still do a large portion of the switching, queueing, effects, etc. by software.
- Eric Geller
The last stream that you should do is just a plain QuickTime one. It would be nice to be able to open the stream in quicktime player, or iTunes rather that in my web browser because flash often crashes my browser. I think that there is a way to stream in quicktime format, but maybe the uStream iPhone feed would work.

Leo: trying to comment, but can't log in via Yahoo ID or even Twitter ID...hopefully you did something to cut down on the echo chamber, and I will wait patiently. Love all things TWIT!

I never Mark All as Read anyway, so this is not required. :)
- Louis Gray
@Louis imagine leaving your GReader for 4 days and come back with 4000+ new items waiting for you...I check it every hour and I find 100+...read the first 50 and Mark all as read :)

Jenna: serious bug... I marked all items older than two weeks as read, and it did that, but also marked all items newer than 2 weeks as unread!
- Shannon Jiménez
@shannon We just tested this and couldn't replicate it. Could you give some additional detail?
- Jenna Bilotta
Jenna: I selected one of my folders (that contains many feeds) and selected "Mark older than 2 weeks as read." I'm using IE8.
- Shannon Jiménez
I think that's new! I got it as well, good to have.
- Cassidy
@ben cool, thanks! (we'll chat about adding it but in the meantime you can add it as a custom service on the settings page)
- Jenna Bilotta
Jenna: Just for further info-- it does not happen when I select an indivdual feed, only when I select folders.
- Shannon Jiménez
@shannon can't replicate that here. :-/ (looking into it some more)
- Jenna Bilotta
@Jenna: still having the same problem (tried it in both IE and FF). Also, discovered that it doesn't happen if everything is already marked as read in the folder. It only happens when some things are unread. Edit: based on Joelle's comment below, maybe this happened because I had marked everything as read in that session, not because everything was marked as read...
- Shannon Jiménez
I have just had the same problem as Shannon - was coming here to share the warning - what a horrible horrible bug! (I have 400 feeds). My google reader experience is more and more a love/hate thing (certain things are just a pain when you have 400 feeds) :S Although for me it did it in every feed except the ones that didnt have posts in the last 2 weeks (obviously), including ones that were totally marked as read

note: actually i did not mark as read items I had read this very session, but all others

I went to a presentation by Ferran Adria back in 1999 in Adelaide, in a room full of Australian and International chefs. It was his first overseas demonstration of the techniques he was using to create his food. It left half the room agog, and half the room dismissing him as a fool. I so desperately want to have a meal at el Bulli.

I'm not sure if it was part of their plan from the start, but I love how a company that provides a service in one area (eg personal finance) can now have a perceived value as a market research company, by virtue of doing a great job in their main area of expertise. Also, pls hurry up and add some Australian banks :(

Maybe now they can expand to Canada too
