Pirates take 'super tanker' towards Somalia - CNN.com
yesterday at 10:04 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
NAIROBI, Kenya (CNN) -- Pirates who hijacked a crude oil tanker off the coast of Kenya are approaching a Somali port, the U.S. Navy said Monday. The Sirius Star -- a crude "super tanker" flagged in Liberia and owned by the Saudi Arabian-based Saudi Aramco company -- was attacked on Saturday more than 450 nautical miles southeast of Mombasa, Kenya. The crew of 25, including British, Croatian, Polish, Filippino and Saudi nationals, are reported to be safe U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet Cmdr. Jane Campbell said the super tanker weighs more than 300,000 metric tons and "is more than three times the size of a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier." Oil industry insiders say a tanker of this size can carry up to 2 million barrels of oil, and the ship's operator, Dubai-based Vela International Marine Ltd, says it is fully laden. - Thomas Hawk via Bookmarklet
Probably the same gang of Somali pirates who captured that Ukrainian ship with 33 tanks and military weapons. Interestingly, reports have shown that pirate "mother ships" travel far out to sea and launch smaller boats to attack passing vessels, sometimes using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). - Kevin Lim
I think somebody forget to remind these guys that the International Talk Like a Pirate Day is Sept 19, not November 17. - Thomas Hawk
...spawning a paramilitary industry of armed ship escorts? - Glenn Batuyong
I think it's time one of these governments got the balls to blow up one of these ships. I think the one full of tanks is should be the first target. Take it out, Pirates and all. If they don't this problem will only get worse. - Kenton
Has Kevin Costner been dispatched to take care of this yet? - Ken Sheppardson
Who would have imagined the Internet and Pirates co-existing in the same era? - Charlie Ramirez

If you really want to be shocked watch the Weekly Piracy Report from the ICC for a while. Or Look at their live map of incidents world wide from this year. http://www.icc-ccs.org/index.p... - Bluesun 2600
Nice add on the Piracy Map. Though it's not surprising. The Gulf of Guinea has been non-stop lawless for millennia. - Christopher Harley
welcome to XXI century ;) just say loud "WE NEED CHANGE" - probably pirates will be scared off by Obama's speeches :) - silpol
That was hilarious, silpol !! +10 - J. D. Ebberly
unfortunately, the only practical approach is making Somali shoreline into "line of death on sea" - yes, this means fishers will be treated same as pirates. This is (almost) barbaric, but the only feasible way - "got your boat on water? say good bye to your life." ... wonder how this fits into corporate budgets... - silpol
House of Saud will rent USA navy for protection....Problem Solved. - imran

"Built in 1943-45 at the Moore School of the University of Pennsylvania for the War effort by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert (no relation to Columbia University's Wallace Eckert) but not delivered to the Army until just after the end of the war, the Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer (ENIAC) was the first general-purpose electronic digital computer. It was 150 feet wide with 20 banks of flashing lights and about 300 times faster than the Mark 1 at addition. Wallace Eckert is cited in the histories as an influence on the designers, as he was for the Mark 1. These US Army photos from the archives of the ARL Technical Library show two early programmers (Gloria Gorden and Ester Gerston) at work on the ENIAC." - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet

One reason Iliked Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon was that he put this fact in the book. Most people don't know or care about the role women played in this. - Anika Malone
Important step, but women (in the Navy) also worked on Aiken's Mark I at Harvard. And don't forget what some consider the first-ever programmer, Ada Augusta Countess of Lovelace, working with Babbage - Dennis E. Hamilton via twhirl
One nice feature was a prevalence of women software developers in the early commercial days (but at computer companies, not what would become IT) - Dennis E. Hamilton via twhirl

"Maybe it takes a ubiquitous name like Google to open the general, non-computer-savvy public’s eyes to the less obvious options that exist. Granted, we’re only talking a couple of percentage points here — but it’s a start." - Daniel J. Pritchett
Makes sense, OSS/Mozilla/FF has always been a hard sell to laymen. How do you explain to people that a dominant company's browser (IE) is actually *not* a good role model for the Net economy? You counter with an equally successful Google! - Daniel J. Pritchett
because the Firefox users miss their add-ons and are unlikely to change - Stewart Rogers
There is no surprise, Chrome is first non-IE browser that looks and feels like IE. In fact they are so similar that it's hard to tell them apart without looking at the title bar. That makes migration a breeze, and kudos to Google for realizing it. - andrei_c
+1 Andrei. I use IE so rarely I had completely missed that fact. - Daniel J. Pritchett
I'm not that surprised. I'd batted this back and forth with Duncan briefly before it launched. My view is the simplicity and brand name is aimed at pirating more share from IE and helping to drive more Google searches. Sorry, even if you port your default engine over, many will switch and I think Google knows this. - AJ Kohn
I second that - my girlfriend didn't want to move because of extensions she uses every day. Also it's worth noting that they'll have got a lot of people to try it by just putting it on the home page. - Robin Barooah
Each substantially new product update MS releases is a chance for them to lose customers. I'm still sitting on WinXP and if I ever leave it'll be for Linux or OSX, not for Vista. It's possible IE8 will lower IE's combined share. - Daniel J. Pritchett
I've not seen it mentioned many other places, but Chrome is essentially the new Google Toolbar, and we all know Google's Toolbar has been showing up on OEM PCs for a long time now, with--and most frequently (and significantly), without--Firefox. Expect Chrome to start appearing on new PCs fresh out of the box...whether MS likes it or not. - abacab

Google Confirms Plans To Put Display Ads On Google.com - Silicon Alley Insider
May 9 at 8:02 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"We've argued that a full load of display ads on Google.com could add $3-$4 billion in annual revenue." Holy Cow. - Elliott
This is sad. One of the differentiators of Google is its advertising. Now they just are going for the profits. Sigh. - Robert Scoble
Like they're not making enough money. What they're doing is working. Why change? - David Risley
do no evil, indeed. - Chris Hollander
worst...idea...ever. - Morgan via twhirl
they have sooo many other avenues to produce income. why that? they need to be more creative. - Josh Mings via twhirl
I wonder how they put them on iGoogle. Honestly, though, a couple half banners surrounding the logo wouldn't really bother me. Everyone's got the right to earn a few billion more. :) - felix
Scoble - don't you hate it when a site gets loaded down with ads? Even after the person said they wouldn't run them? - Dave Hodson
If the display ads from google are every bit as intelligent as the link ads, they'll be fine. I'm disappointed by how this will likely effect the page load times on Google (which are the primary reason I use Google over Yahoo or MSN anyway) - Adam Posey
lets see how this *pushing envelope* ends up... I guess this is classical case of big company taken over by mediocrity step by step, described so many times that it should be recognized without effort - silpol
i wont believe this until i see it. - Chris Farrugia
Isn't this the same as with Wordpress ads (only for Internet Explorer?). Power-users probably never see the Google homepage. - Meryn Stol
Really bad idea. - terry radford
I guess it was only a matter of time... As long as it's unobtrusive in terms of pageload &&,|| client-side processing I'm fine with it. Could probably add rule(s) to ipfw... - RandaL Hicks
the display ads might be put on Google image search which is all about images anyway, not main .com text homepage - Kevin Gough
If Google manages to get advertisers to clean up their act and create ads that don't slow down/break web pages, then everyone wins. If they let the same ads run on Google that run everywhere else, then Google loses bigtime. - Jason Wehmhoener
Personally, I think the article is trying to stir up unfounded attention. It talks about display ads in general raking in cash for Google, but then the quote from the Google rep talks about ads in image search only. If that's the case, what is the big deal? - Jason Dettbarn
Agree w @Jason and add that people had the same sort of reaction when text ads were introduced. It's not like you're going to wake up one day and it's going to look like the old TW Pathfinder site. - Erik Dafforn
I'm not sure how I feel about this...I mean, if Google can display ads that are in fact relevant to me, then I might be interested. I also think that while this idea does suck - it is important to remember what Google is...a public company that has to make profit. Sometimes I have a hard time understanding where all their money comes from....(i.e. who clicks on all those ads anyway?) - Elliott
I also agree with @Jason. The reference to Google.com is like saying "Google.com properties" - (i.e. Image Search). - Elliott
Is Google trying to be the next Yahoo!? Do not like. - darnell
