that's it- the understanding of publics.
- Kevin Marks
Plus they have video games for entertainment and have lots of time. I don't have time, so Twitter is a form of entertainment that I can get in bite sized chunks.
- Robert Scoble
That's it in one sentence: "Most teens just want to talk with their friends, not write to the world, he says" now maybe the world can start spinning again.
- Hoop
It's really interesting how I've noticed that most of my peers (20-somethings) are too hooked on Facebook to use Twitter or FriendFeed. Again, they don't see the point; Facebook has built-in Twitter that shares with the people they already know and care about.
- Jason Preston
too easy to get in trouble for what you say - on most networks you have to accept the invite of those who want to connect - not so on twitter
- Julie Gallaher
That's the same response I get from nieces and nephews.
- Joseph Ferris
Same thing I hear from a ton of people, regardless of age. For most people, they first need a "point" to use it or else they either don't sign up or don't return.
- Jeff Peters
danah talked about how some teens are using private twitter accounts, as Facebook is now too public, as their parents and teachers are there http://bit.ly/Awmw9 Multiple publics http://bit.ly/publics
- Kevin Marks
My 14-year-old daughter doesn't want to share her life with the world on Twitter...and I'm good with that!
- Kirsti Scott
They care, like us about reputation, but within their 'groups' - not publicly....
- Mrinal Desai
I am here, and I am only thirteen. But I use it to post news, not about my life.
- Zachary TG
I'll have to explain it to her in detail before she gets it, prefers Facebook since ALL of her friends are there
- Miguel Rodriguez
Kids today don't understand nor care about the social dynamics that they will be involved in. Without a solid background now they can never hope to make truly justified choices later on. It scares me because I have to deal with them directly.
- Adam
I'm not much older than your son, but I have a twitter. Noticeably many of my friends detest twitter and compare it to facebook status messages, therefore they are unable to understand what makes Twitter great. Facebook has managed to grab the minds of us teenagers. I must admit I am much more inclined to update my facebook statuses as my friends will comment on it.
- Rahul Krishnakumar
the reason Twitter does well with teens is because they don’t care about networking – the act of creating/extending a network – as much as they do in their existing network itself. http://www.kanjhan.com/2009...
- Bhavishya Kanjhan
PARDON ME! DOES ANYBODY HAVE A BRAIN?
- Zachary TG
Don't worry Zachary - you don't exist in this thread
- Bwana ☠
It seems that every ones use of these tools is a bit different. I use twitter/friendfeed to keep in touch with fellow surfers and fellow web developers I know both here and across the world. Twitter/friendfeed have be come my best tools for this.
- Luke Kilpatrick
My son, while I type into FriendFeed, is playing Halo. The original one.
- Robert Scoble
Yet when I talk about the importance of tying Twitter to gaming, I get ignored
- Bwana ☠
Zach - no clue man, you're the exception the point in this thread :)
- Bwana ☠
Also teenagers are less likely to stick with Twitter long enough to make it useful to them, Facebook has a sort of instant gratification with adding your friends and commenting them etc.
- Chris Lawrence
I am @ricklafave on twitter, but I see the gap being that teens are all about text direct conversations. I see a huge gap in communication between the generations.
- Rick LaFave
Bwana- You just got yourself another subscriber. :)
- Zachary TG
Hey now, I'm 16 and Twitter totally rules over Facebook for me. Twitter's for discussing news; Facebook's for your personal life. Totally agree w/ Zachary TG
- Kirk R. Arner
Of course there are exceptions, I'm 19 and I'm on Friendfeed and Twitter, but we're talking about the majority of teenagers, Kirk and Zachary.
- Chris Lawrence
Have to agree here... my kid (13) and step brother (14) are total facebook kids... they occasionally hop on MySpace as well. Both try to get into Twitter, but really do not see the point.
- Darin aka iGoByDoc
Chris Lawrence: I understand. But like 60% of students at my school use Twitter, only around 40% use Facebook.
- Zachary TG
By the time today's teens are into things they'll look upon Twitter like we now look at IRC. I'm wondering if I even still have an IRC client on my machine....
- Andrew Leyden
Totally agree, Chris, but more teens are into tech than people think. Not all of us are texting to our friends about useless junk 24/7.
- Kirk R. Arner
because it takes too long and is too involved...
- Morgan Haley
Adults are very lazy...140 characters is tough to power through, but doable. The only people lazier than adults? Teenagers. Why bother with Twitter when their lives revolve around Facebook and it meets all their needs?
- Todd Pringle
That's really cool, I know about three of my friends on Twitter and they never use it haha. And if they do they use it as they would Facebook status.
- Chris Lawrence
Even though I text friends, it is just for information, not for useless information.
- Zachary TG
Todd Pringle: I am so not lazy. I wouldn't be spelling my words correctly now would I?
- Zachary TG
Texting has always been really big in Australia, Zachary. It's a habit that's hard to get out of.
- Chris Lawrence
Well yeah, same for me, but we're the exceptions.
- Kirk R. Arner
Zach: speaking in generalities of course. Clearly you are an exception. All up on Friendfeed and whatnot.
- Todd Pringle
I recently started texting. But it was almost created in Canada.
- Zachary TG
I will be happy when everyone has the internet in their pocket and I can just email people instead of spending 25c everytime I want to use 140 characters :(
- Chris Lawrence
Todd Pringle: Thank you. I see that people on FriendFeed are different then the casual social networker. We have manners and use large words and sentences. Thank you
- Zachary TG
goes back to "announce" vs. "discuss", too. Fb has nice "my friends and family" feel that Twitter and FF don't yet have.
- MikeAmundsen
Depends on geographic area. Here it was the Myspace revolution, then slowly became Facebook. The early adopters of Facebook jumped on the Twitter ship and now the middle stage of Facebook adopters are jumping to Twitter. Does Facebook rule supreme among my group? Yes, with myspace a close second, and twitter slowly catching up. PS, i'm 16.
- Sean Quinn
I also don't think most teenagers grasp the difference between Twitter and Facebook. My friends who are content with Facebook don't see any need for Twitter and are actually puzzled by it's intended use. Over and over again I here, "Well Facebook can do that, can't it?"
- Angus Burton
It is only 5c in Canada per text, and unlimited for 5 dollars.
- Zachary TG
Yeah phone plans in Australia are really ridiculous. There are hardly any unlimited SMS plans and the ones that are you are usually paying over $80 a month. But I digress!
- Chris Lawrence
But our data plans are outrageous. $30 for only 500MB.
- Zachary TG
My 16-year-old daughter said the same thing a few months back. But she finally relented and is on Twitter now. A few weeks ago she said "I've never been more informed in my life" since joining.
- Patrick Giblin
Seeing the longtail of Twitter takes a somewhat more mature mindset. That's why some mature teens can 'get' Twitter and why some childish adults don't (and content with Facebook).
- CannonGod
I think the topic teens liking or not liking twitter topic is entertaining at best. Does anyone have any decent statistics on this? Not to mention the term "teen" is pretty loose 13 and 18 are a world apart. I would think a teen using or not using would be more based on their personal interest. My 20 and 30 year old friends that aren't in the tech industry could care less about it.
- Nicholas Fidanza
Admittedly younger generations want to talk with less ppl but more frequently, and adults want to create more connections for friendship or financial gain. Kids don't need to worry about being loved, they have mum & dad at the end of the day :-P Sad single geeks however...
- CannonGod
@Angus that was a comment concern among my friends. Where twitter began to rule was among mobile updating. Although teens can use and do use Facebook Mobile, a two-way conversation can work well among a group of friends via Twitter on mobile phones much rather than Facebook status updates/conversations on Facebook, in my experience.
- Sean Quinn
I'm 16 and me and my close group of friends use twitter-its possible to have "chat room" like conversations about things (where are we gonna go after school, etc.) if we're all hooked up on it-it works great, but admittedly some kids use twitter more than others (like me)
- Oliver Reich
My 15 year old chats on Myspace with her friends. I told here to message one of her regular chat buddies as "You Troll" today and she laughed until she almost peed her pants. :)
- Eric Logan
I just see Twitter as Social SMS. Teens like texting, so really it's just an extension of that. I can therefore see it being used more as a tool rather than an actual network per-say.
- CannonGod
While it’s possible to make Twitter “private,” the culture of Twitter is all about participation in a large public square. From the digerati seeking widespread attention to the politically minded hoping to appear on CNN, many are leveraging Twitter to be part of a broad dialogue. Teens are much more motivated to talk only with their friends and they learned a harsh lesson with social...

The article discusses that Teens like building out profiles, and taking to people they know. Twitter's not really for that - it's used more for information sharing IMO.
- Steffan Antonas
It's a crime to suggest that Twitter as a whole is just a single feature of FB and has been that way since the beginning. I never understood when Twittr was demo'd to me how a single feature of a bigger app (in my case, IM status/mood messages) needed to be an app on its own. However, what the early adopter mass wants, the early adopter mass gets (until the mainstream mass shows up and it's zomg culture/class war... I LOVE watching this.)
- Eric Rice
Sean: That's a good point. Strangely, using Twitter as a conversation base didn't occur to me. I actually thought more about using a FriendFeed room for that.
- Angus Burton
I agree with Patrick and I'm well past my teens! FF adds talking with my friends, so it works.
- Rachel Lea Fox
It is simple: kids don't use Twitter because they dont have an iPhone! Most teenagers don't have a decent internet enabled device that allows them to use Twitter nicely. Most parents can't afford (or want) to pay $150+ phone bills for their kids plus buy them an iPhone. I have many young friends and they all love the "Big Brother" spirit of Twitter. I totally dont believe the "I'm a...

- Robert Scoble
It's a lot easier to have friends in school. On the outside you have to be a bit more proactive.
- Todd Hoff
I only use Twitter to broadcast what I am doing on Posterous, and FriendFeed.
- Matt Ruiz
I'm an older (some say very old) user and friends my age don't do Twitter, FB etc. Their opinion: why bother when I have email? Why would I want to share with the Internet at large? The web is full of idiots.
- Robert Hafer
from iPhone
Geoff: I read FriendFeed I just don't post very much. I enjoy reading Twitter and FF they can cetainly be informative and interesting. None of my friends are on Twitter so I was speaking from my experience with them, not all teens.
- Patrick Scoble
Todd: That is also absolutely true with students.
- Patrick Scoble
It is true but a lot of adults don't see the point of it either at the moment and I think it'll change.I'm 19 and I think it's more useful than Facebook etc.
- Craig Malone
kids dont use words or language, they communicat through hyperlinks & txt. as they get older, they'll appreciate the value of words
- echostreamer
Teens spend 6 or 8 hours a day within a few hundred feet of most of the people they know. Why would they need Twitter?
- Rob Sterling
the same reason they spend the next 8 hours glued to facebook and the internet instead of going outside to chill with those friends (no offense :)
- echostreamer
Yeah, but information on Facebook is shared the same way as in school - it's hierarchical and clique-based. Kids are more like base primates than adults. Twitter is too open, when they want to control the dissemination of information among those people they know in school.
- Rob Sterling
There are a lot of 13-15 year-olds on Twitter, just look around :) The best way to find them is to find a celebrity who might garner a teen following ... That said, Twitter is (for now) nowhere near as popular with teens as MySpace and Facebook, for sure.
- dcap
Also, most kids can't afford smartphones, and using Twitter exclusively by text message is mostly a one-way affair. It's pretty lame. I bet your 15 y.o. son loves to text and spends hours on Facebook.
- Steve Lynch
from twhirl
I think teens may be more privacy savvy than the media paints them. They know that a nasty Tweet about a school official can get them expelled; but a private txt is safe.
- Robert Hafer
How many teens are marketing gurus and life coaches? Kids aren't selling anything and see no need to sell themselves. THAT'S why they don't care about Twitter.
- Kimber Scott
Robert: it is worse than that. One message can get them shunned.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Just like my older friends, they have no desire to connect with the Twitter-verse at large. But for different reasons.
- Robert Hafer
I've been looking for the point for a long time :O) - To me it has become a place where I can "vocalize" things I've always just said to myself before. I just find it funny anyone actually "listens"
- Bill Rawlinson
I think its good that teens don't like twitter. We can get on here without them!
- Su Butcher
As a teenager I didn't see the point of reading a newspaper either, but now I work in one!
- | Balu |
I don't have any friends, so I'm forced to write for the world.
- Big K
Interns in my office say they know college friends starting to use Twitter. Of course, none of the interns actually do. Twitter seems to be good for celebrities and professional networking.
- Hutch Carpenter
What's the big deal ? Most teens don't follow current events like politics or the economy either, it's not what being a kid is about.
- Doug Randall in SL
So that means he will like Google Wave? = the next Teen Twitter
- Hans Kainz
We can't say that Google Wave is the next Twitter, it's more instant messaging than anything (and I'd say FriendFeed relates more to it than Twitter does).
- Hugh Isaacs II
I do deeply hope that Google Wave takes off. I really hate signing into my msn account just to keep in touch with friends who can't get on the GTalk bandwagon or just don't see the point.
- Chris Chua
I think if you could start a conversation like this one on twitter just like on ff or fb with commenting tweets or just parsing them when you reply, it would be a lot more interesting
- Kaysha
Interesting that the 15 year old kid who got the job at Morgan Stanley did so because his mum knew a chap who she met when dog walking - so not what he knew but who his mum knew, and because of that he had an audience for his opinion.
- Simon Rogers
Wrote a post about this a long time ago. Interaction will scale down as the possibilities to interact scale up. The next gen doesn't care about talking to the whole world. There is little value in it
- Alexander van Elsas

Just blogged on this subject. I don't believe this is a generational issue. It's about privacy and signal:noise ratio. When those degrade, communities migrate to new social networking services, regardless of group members' average age. http://lehawes.wordpress.com/2009...

I admire the US very much because of how they react. But they're more heated up about this than Iranians are. Where was this enthusiasm when Napal and Myanmar were trying to do the same thing
- Jackson Pollock
Glad things cooled off ... started to get a little too heated there ...
- Jason Beck
twitter is a huge mess. The few accounts that are twittering from Iran would have been using emails with CNN/BBC instead.
- Charbax
i submitted this story for:twit on delicious Leo

I think that might be why the US doesn't embrace soccer. It seems they don't sit down and watch something start to finish, they walk around and do other stuff while they watch TV, and therefor soccer is hard to keep up with
- Jackson Pollock
if you pay for cable, is it legal to download something that you've technically already paid for? all you're really doing is providing your own dvr service?
- Chris Heath
yeah speedwatching of American Football is watch a play skip 30 seconds on the DVR

it really messes with your ability to focus for longer periods of time, you want stuff quick and fast

150 comments in half an hour? And I'm supposed to read through this and address people how? Dear Leo, your last remaining (official) forum misses you. Come back to leovilletownsquare.com some time to let people know it's worth using. If Friendfeed is the only thing that you plan on using from now on, please leave your forum a message so they stop trying to be involved with you.
- Robert
If you don't make your own fan page on Facebook, Facebook will actually DELETE the unofficial facebook fan page, without any questions, deleting all thousands of fans that were on the unofficial fan page
- Charbax
American Football... not a matter of "busy" with me. I like the predictable periods of excitement (ie the plays), and appreciate some analysis in between. Replays come often too, if you're away for a minute and want to see what happened. If I'm at the field I prefer soccer.
- Preternat (Ken Cadby)
Chris, I used Stickam to chat, but gave up because I'd like to use an actual forum to discuss TWiT related info, but the official TWiT Forum fiasco has pretty much destroyed all hope for that for a lot of people. The "Revenge" forum is sorta active, but has functionality issues.
- Robert
Exactly why i like futobol better... it's not predictable

Robert, stickam chat was the worst chat ever... irc has always been the official chat

american football was made popular in the US by George Clooney, watch the film

Question is has the Apple Board of Director opened themselves for lawsuits for not disclosing this information if its true?
- Greg
In some ways you are right Charbax but the quality of the apple creations are in a class of their own
- joe mercier
Greg; It's very compelling to say so, but would this really be the case in any other company? If Michael Dell had cancer, he had to disclose it to the board? I don't think so
- Jackson Pollock
maybe the liver transplant part is disinfo and he really got some other treatment
- Chris Heath
Quality? Apple products are always overpriced.
- Charbax
Apple is not even close to being a Monopoly
- CJ Sauk
Think it is a regulation in a publicly traded company
- Greg
Charbax, say what you will, but their quality is superb above anything else on the market.
- Jackson Pollock
It should have been reveled without a doubt. If I was a share holder I would be upset
- Jeff Vreeland
Itunes and OSX is a monopoly and should be illegal
- Charbax
Because there are other choices they do not own a Monopoly
- CJ Sauk
OSX cannot be installed on third party hardware, definition of illegal monopolistic hardware/software lock
- Charbax
iTunes is a free download, with 100000x competitors
- Jackson Pollock
steve himself is probably the source
- Chris Heath
"a monopoly exists when a specific individual or enterprise has sufficient control over a particular product or service to determine significantly the terms on which other individuals shall have access to it."
- CJ Sauk
Apple is only "thought" of as a Monopoly because people are dumb enough to not look at other options
- CJ Sauk
I use Amazon's 256k music store, the quality is much better
- Kevin Adair
Apple unDRMed itunes only recently cause they were going to be sued by the European Union for billions
- Charbax
Kevin makes the point. If Apple were a monopoly in the area, he couldn't do that
- Jackson Pollock
I agree with Leo - the source was Apple so they could control the source.
- Jeff Vreeland
Apple does illegal monopolistic tactics selling the iphone as well, locking people in with carriers that pay Apple for exclusivity. That's illegal as well and evil. The EU is sueing Apple for that as well
- Charbax
Charbax; conclusion; if you don't like Apple products, you have options in every category. It's regrettable that you can't find products of equal quality
- Jackson Pollock
I find Archos to be of much higher quality. Plays DivX, Flash video, 95% of web videos, on much larger screens, HD resolutions and cheaper than the iphone
- Charbax
Charbax, perfect! I'm so happy you're happy with something else. Point made, they're not a monopoly
- Jackson Pollock
It doesn't change to the fact that Apple uses illegal monopolistic tactics
- Charbax
Archos used the ARM Cortex A8 about 10 months before Apple
- Charbax
720p video playback on an iphone would make no sense, since the screen resolution is so low and it has no HDMI output. Archos plays 720p on 3x larger resolution screen and has HDMI output
- Charbax
Could Google Voice change things when it comes out?
- CJ Sauk
Leo, Would love to hear everyone's opinion on how long AT&T will be the only carrier of iPhone.
- Jeff Vreeland
Google Voice will provide free VOIP on Android worldwide
- Charbax
It is recording 720p video that it can do, not playback (though probably via an external display).
- JR Holmes
SMS isn't technically data. It's sent through the phone's control channels that it uses to communicate with the tower. It doesn't cost the cell carrier anything extra to send SMS messages over the control channel because those bands have to be kept open anyway.
- nick
Wow, first I've heard this. Question is though, if you remove your Voice Plan from your phone and only go with Data will they increase the price
- CJ Sauk
it has no HD video input for recording, and the camcorder has bad optics so what would be the point
- Charbax
AT&T is good in the old Ameritech region (upper Midwest). It has good coverage and is pretty responsive.
- JR Holmes
You can have Data exclusive HSDPA sim cards in Europe for $20 per month.
- Charbax
It's a great phone. The US just has horrible cell networks
- Jackson Pollock
I'm sure you can do it in Canada with Rogers
- CJ Sauk
Same here, Jeff Vreeland, I'd like an iPhone, but I'm not a fan of AT&T, how long must we wait?
- dawt
I would like a iphone and have been offered one but I am to cheap to fork over the monthly charges
- joe mercier
I really want an iPhone, but I can't really justify a $75 minimum monthly fee.
- Derek Erdmann
I've never had a dropped call in my life, but I live in tiny Norway, and we have a better network. So don't blame Apple. Howard Stern complains about dropped call on his Blackberry on AT&T non stop. Screw you AT&T
- Jackson Pollock
Happy 200th TWIT Show and Anniversary!
- Emery Walker
Have to agree with you Derek E. That $75 US is what is stopping me. I have a dumbphone with data and it only costs me $50. A 50% increase is steep to me.

- joe mercier

You have to put the DNS stuff in and wait, sometimes wait 24/48 hours before DNS things propagate all over the world so your site works
- Charbax
charbax, problem is that you have to pay 25% of price to the government, and 10% tax, in addition to high shipping prices. leaves you where you started
- Jackson Pollock
Morro is real, but is of unknown quality. Initially it will look quite good, but part of the question will be how their updates are handled.
- JR Holmes

Strangely, I went to Sprint on the iPhone release day. They were desparate for people to come in. They actually had a Palm rep in a suburban store (and not an upmarket store). I wasn't too impressed by it. There is a lot of potential, but Android may be sucking out off the alternative iPhone juice.
- JR Holmes
$60 per month for 5GB is ridiculous. You get 10GB HSDPA for $20 in Europe with no contract needed
- Charbax
You can buy one and just use day passes--so pay as you go
- Larry Roth
For smartphones, I'm waiting for the Android flood of units toward the end of 2009. That will be an interesting time. The phone companies may actually start competing on that side of things. The mob of Android units may collectively start to give the iPhone some realistic competition.
- JR Holmes
The iPhone has 50,000 reasons that the iPhone 4 will not be on Android.
- JR Holmes
Why doesn't he upload the Mpeg4 video to Youtube in full quality on an official Twit channel
- Charbax
Those iphone apps are 98% useless, not reasons for anything. Android apps will be much more useful and are much more useful already
- Charbax
That being said, there aren't too many reasons that anything other than the iPhone and Android will exist in the smartphone market in 2 years.
- JR Holmes
Ahh, but they exist... That's all the excuse most people need.
- CJ Sauk
hmm nop, most iphone users don't even know about the iphone apps
- Charbax
RIM will still own the SmartPhone market as it does now
- CJ Sauk
While many of the apps are poor, that still means that there are 1,000 good apps (to use your made up figure). Android doesn't even have that many apps total and it is also subject to the same ratio of good/bad.
- JR Holmes
As many techno geeks as there are, there are far more Business moguls that will stay with the Global RIM products
- CJ Sauk
Android will win cause it's open and free. Companies can compete all using Android and cause it'll have the best features and apps and be the fastest to implement on new hardware
- Charbax
They have to beat RIM (Blackberry) first
- CJ Sauk
RIM may own the corporate e-mail market for the next few years. There is a lot of inertia there. On a 5-year horizon, businesses may want to look at low cost alternatives.
- JR Holmes
blackberry will use Android also eventually
- Charbax
Ture, but cost only comes in on the Service Provider side.
- CJ Sauk
Android will need a lot more work before that happens
- CJ Sauk
Soon people will demand $100 smartphones that are totally unlocked and only require $20 per month data plans with competition on every level, from hardware to carrier
- Charbax
Blackberry may hold out long enough in the business niche to be unable to make the transition to Android. They have little interest in the app market that iPhone and Android are building. Without that, they will be left behind.
- JR Holmes
Android will make $100 unlocked smartphones with $20 data plans and free VOIP/IM happen faster than you think
- Charbax
Blackberry App World... It's already there
- CJ Sauk
Blackberry's app market is an afterthought. Just as Charbox said, there is a problem with the good/bad ratio everywhere. The few good apps on Blackberry aren't sufficient to make the marketplace good.
- JR Holmes
App World already has all the (usable) apps that iPhone and Android have so there's no competition there
- CJ Sauk
You made the point right there... All apps that are used "by the mass" are or will be available on all phones
- CJ Sauk
Just like Extensions for browsers, the maker will always want to get everyone they can thus making their apps available on all products.

Steve hates pens and gloves and everything like that. They would never do a tablet with a pen, and never do a tablet without a pen, but with OSX. It will be a huge iPhone
- Jackson Pollock
I tend to agree with Jeff Cannata about tablets, iPhone is a perfect size, just needs more power/storage/openness
- James Britton
Dear Jason, you know which platforms already have the turn-it-into-a-wifi-hotspot app you described? Windows Mobile and Symbian. For months.
- Vlad Bobleanta
Mister IQ. They would never do that. if an engineer gave Steve a touchscreen devise that you have to hit a tiny little red x in a corner to exit an app, he would throw it out the window. It has to have a touchscreen OS.
- Jackson Pollock
I'm so proud of them, they haven't mentioned twitter once!
- Curtis
They're not going to release a Netbook unless there is some sort of developer focus. Remember this is a dev conference.
- Jesse Stay
@Ken Thinking about it now, I've yet to see one in person.

zephyrlily I know how to do that - that's not what I was referring to. :-)

Hey, Matt, when you gonna import your Tweets?
- Robert Scoble
I already had a friendfeed acct. Which I ignore. Just like the Facebook acct I ignore too. If I wanted to follow you on FF, I would. Twitter works for me.
- Trine Curtis
bots in the belfry / scoble's built a friendfeed box / to house all his bots ... #haiku
- judith
Trine: I don't get that. Following Twitter users here is a lot better than following them on Twitter. Colleen: you aren't a bot, I'm already following you here.
- Robert Scoble
Trine: ahh, you are caught by the Twitter lock in. You want to follow the bots over on Twitter. Cool. Notice that I have 90,000 followers. Notice how many said anything in response to me. Almost none. Twitter is all bots all the time.
- Robert Scoble
Trine: not that there's anything wrong with bots, see. I love collecting them too over on Twitter. Turn on auto following and you'll get tons of bots. Get onto the recommended follower list you'll get even more. Look at the people following Oprah. All bots.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah the conversation is much more real here, I've only got four subscribers and I still interact a lot more on FF than Twitter.
- Chris Lawrence
Nick: how can you tell a bot on Twitter? Look at Oprah's followers. http://twitter.com/Oprah... They don't have real avatars. They don't Tweet. They don't follow anyone except for recommended followers. They are bots!
- Robert Scoble
Chris: shhhh, don't get the bots upset. They might start spamming here.
- Robert Scoble
I have importd all my tweets, I just don't have many. And anyway, since I started using ff, most of them are just my likes anyway. You'd notice that if you were following me. :)

[Quick Poll] Does it make sense to create an "A-list" group on FF just as people assembled a list of "A-list" group of bloggers? What would happen to the dynamics of the site if people only interacted with the "A-list"? Would that promote or inhibit interactions between people?
"UNLIKE" Let's keep the labels outta the FriendFeedz.
- Brad Williamson
My main feed has everyone. I have lists based on field of primary expertise as best as I can ascertain based on posts and Identify data. Like Wordpress Expert, Tech Blogger, Coder, Designer, Print Media, FFundercats etc.
- Eric Logan
For now I've only filtered for hot comments and the like, I'll give myself another week before a definitive answer.
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
I've tried doing lists with the old UI, but I've did a bit too much at first and seems unable to really get at cleaning that mess yet.
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
Brad - do you use filters to separate out people's posts?
- LPH™ and his dog P™
The Top 10 which used to be on the old version and I think will eventually be coming to this version didn't affect the interactions on FriendFeed. I don't think it will if you created that list either ;)
- Nicholas James
My list (if anyone cares) is divided fairly easily -- everyone, family, twitter only, spammers, Linux, and Windows 7 ...
- LPH™ and his dog P™
By profession or "tag" of the working force terms or simply passion of. (i.e. lolkatz to SXSW advocate) but mechanically, I you're feeling good about yourself, despite some who can in fact develop anger through those same interactions, then you're good for a follow everyone, and if they get it at the same time, they get it.
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
It would be sad for me to interact with the A list only, I would miss many people who have great things to say. I think it would be diminishing of the overall conversations that we have. But I can see where the list would be good for people just starting up. A "A list" per industry would serve a great purpose in many ways.
- Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Dan: I only interact with the A list. Funny, I'm following eeryone here so you must all be on the A list.
- Robert Scoble
Due to the nature of FOAF there wouldn't be a lot of isolation. That said, as a member of the D list I wouldn't feel that great about it :)
- jcunwired
How about groups of people with expert knowledge in certain topic areas? These people could post interesting articles and conduct conversation around these areas... sort of like how newspapers should be. Engage your audience with interesting topics and with experts who know what they are commenting on.
- David Damore
The nature of social interaction is to reach out beyond your peer group and circle of interests. How do you know that the group contains everyone with that expert knowledge? FF works because you can create your own groups, and keep an eye on the community for those who interest you.
- jcunwired
I have almost everyone in my home feed, but also divide up into professions, twitter friends, etc., so lots of people are in several lists. And since his discussions are usually so active, I even have Robert Scoble in a list of his own.
- Sharon McPherson
It makes sense to do that to pull them out of the rest of your feeds. I definitely do this.
- Louis Gray
I use FriendFeed primarily to interact and find out all about my a-list friends. Everyone else that wants to connect with me that I "know" from Twitter et al goes into another group. Why? I'm not so sure I need to know every little thing about the people that aren't so close to me.
- Damien Basile
Instead of imaginary friends, we have custom feeds/groups now. Click the Groups title in the right-hand side bar, and then "Create a Group". Make a private group (if you want the closest match to the old "imaginary friends" setup), and import the service into that group. You can put all your "imaginary friends" into one group, too, which is convenient. I go one step further and make a list which contains my IF group for webcomics and blogs, and a few other subscriptions for things like the The Onion group.
- Karl Knechtel
Karl - Thanks. I'll give that a shot.

Dollhouse 4/24 ("Haunted") -- I really liked the murder mystery plot, and thought Eliza did some of her best acting in the series to date. Overall, solid episode that really developed the theme of Dollhouse further. And I liked Topher for the first time.
I agree that it was some of Eliza's best acting (not an overly high bar, though)... as an episode, I thought it was just ok. The topher story was sweet. And the Helo story, man, I love that situation - it's so freaking messed up. But as a standalone ep, you know, it was just ok.
- felix
If all they had was the murder mystery, I'd have been very happy with the episode. The situation was a great set up, and totally unique to the Dollhouse concept. This couldn't have been an episode of any other series.
- Stephen Mack
Don't get me wrong, I liked the show (and I really like the series), but that plotline still felt a little old to me - I feel like I've seen the quietly investigating the death of the rich person to see who gets the money. Sure, it had a little twist, but it didn't really feel all that twisty. :) I was much more interested in the other storylines going on. :)
- felix
felix is right on. The plot has been done too many times. Topher's storyline saved the episode for me.
- Joseph Ferris

Curious: Do you back up your twitter history? Why or why not? What (if anything) would be lost if it all disappeared? http://beta.friendfeed.com/axispor...
Yes, there are several. Here's one service: http://tweetake.com/ I don't know how many folks actually do this though, so I wonder. I'm guessing the social tech gurus would definitely want to make that move.
- Kathy Fitch
Interesting, didn't know about that.
- Kashif Khan
thanks! Didn't know this was possible. The normal Twitter via web has a clunky way of seeing your history and needs something more intuitive. The question now is: If you back it up, can you restore?
- Glenn Batuyong
I think restoration is a bit more of a problem, based on the FAQs here: http://tweetbackup.com/ I'm hoping we can find someone who has actually used one of these services to chime in on what all they can and can't do.
- Kathy Fitch
FriendFeed is the backup :) To restore your tweets back to Twitter, do a search filtered by your username and the twitter service, e.g. "from: axisportals service:twitter", scroll down, get the RSS feed URL and pass that to something like twitterfeed.
- Edmund Tay
Nope, it's all available in search if I need it. I don't feel it's important enough to back up.

Interesting that its most recently that we've been seeing more news on this sort of thing. Between the malware in the power grid, these fiber sabatoges, and the Chinese GhostNet (Security Now had a great ep on it), its certainly been an interesting cluster of seemingly related events.

The pre is all about the web, the idea is to sync with the cloud not the desktop. A bad idea in my opinion, but we'll see
- Ghworg
let's be honest. what made the iphone more successful than the others; 1. the design and interaction. 2. the brand and buzz. 3. the marketing and news
- Jackson Pollock
what is the delicious url for this show?
- Xenophrenia
i'm hoping that android will be mature in a year and a half when my iphone contract is up... i'll check in on the phone wars then and no sooner
- Chris Heath
Jamie - Thats pay as you go which is a total rip off anyway
- Iain
Jackson: In Germany 99 percent of cellphone users I know have voicemail enabled
- Holger Eilhard
I think also in the UK its become very fashionable between (and i hate to use this phrase) the lower class to have the latest phone so that also boosts the market.
- ralphsaunders
I agree Jamie... to facebook deffinately... the more 'plugged in' group of my friends have also moved to twitter although that is a small minority
- ralphsaunders
Holger; Americans expect a box that answers the number they are calling, and that they can leave a message there
- Jackson Pollock
gunther there's a block go to their page and block (next to subscribe)
- Chris Heath
Yeah I can see twitter being next. I think I might get into user interface development in that area... it might become profitable for a short while :P
- ralphsaunders
i'm on roadrunner, and it's fine for now... no cap - afaik if they change the plans it will only affect new subscribers - i'd be grandfathered in
- Chris Heath
Jamie its only a few hours of xbox live play if your the host
- ralphsaunders
didnt know hosting was so bandwidth intensive..
- Jamie
some people can't afford 150 a month and use that much
- Xenophrenia
How is IPTV going to succeed with this. it's an enormous roadblock
- Jackson Pollock
I don't want to go back to how it was on dial-up when I had a clock by the side of the computer so I didn't spend too much time online and get a huge bill
- Ghworg
Jamie: By definition it's bandwidth intensive :) Hosting = Bandwidth
- Eric Florenzano
Limits cause people to be more conservative in their usage. They will be less likely to try new things, like streaming video.
- Ghworg
Ghworg: Compuserve used to charge by the time and they had a big clock on the top right corner of the app. You could set it to kick you off after a certain duration.
- Eric Florenzano
they are trying to protect their cable tv and prohibit online tv and video
- Xenophrenia
Sure this isn't just a ploy to get people to lock down their Wifi?
- Jackson Pollock
router firmware is the place to put the meter... or even better on the cable modem... then you could check on your account page for the isp
- Chris Heath
$75 bucks a month is a better price for the top tier.
- archaictree
jackson lots of ppl are locking down their wifi here... it's hard for me to get an open ap these days
- Chris Heath
most routers come out of the box locked down
- Jamie
I pay around $55 for 8 down, 2 up. totally unlimited
- Martin Eberhardt
with all media going to the internet, bandwidth caps are going to limit a lot of what you can do
- Matthew
If people have limited bandwidth, they'll put a password on the Wifi and force their neighbors to get their own line.
- Jackson Pollock
they are having an issue with people cancelling their cable and keeping internet and watching their video online ... that's what they are trying to stop
- Xenophrenia
It would be awesome if FriendFeed could figure out how to link an IRC server to FriendFeed conversations. Each conversation could get its own channel.
- Jesse Stay
Here's a request; get the videos of the old episodes hosted. the best twit's by far were 21, 23, 24, and so on, and they were filmed but are no longer hosted. people would love them, but Leo is holding them back, get them out there!
- Jackson Pollock
I like that the bitgravity feed lets you pause and resume without missing anything like the others do.
- Jeff
my favourite was the one after Apple announced the move to Intel.
- Jamie
Jamie; if you read the twit wiki, I listed all the taped live shows, but many are missing hosting, and those who aren't are bad quality mostly. get them really hosted
- Jackson Pollock
actually I think it was the Tech Guy - Leo had John come on to talk about the move to Intel. John said it was a great move, Leo said Apple would die (something like that!)
- Jamie
Jamie; yes that is true. However, early TWiT, the first episode with John on. (I'll check, but around 10) Leo played that interview
- Jackson Pollock
And for those interested. Episodes 15-19 are the best shows they ever made. The I get no spam thing started there, Revision3 early beginning, Kevin talks about first Diggnation shows and so on. Very very very funny.
- Jackson Pollock
I remember listening to them at the time. literally recall when John first said he gets no spam and I think Leo just died laughing
- Jamie
My dad told me he got no spam and then i showed him his spam box :P
- ralphsaunders
Jamie; it was a Steve Gibson - John thing. Steve turned off HTML emails and John yelled at him, saying he got NO SPAM what so ever, with HTML. Steve and John work fantastic together
- Jackson Pollock
yeah John said he had this setup from a friend right?
- Jamie
ralph; sell your pc. if you want to run a program like final cut, a cheap pc won't work. apple is expensive yes, but thats what's needed 90% of the time
- Jackson Pollock
uhhhhh that needs to be Leo's avatar
- Chad DeHaan
I would build my own PC... I'm not stupid :D. But the Apple side of things I think is a bit much for me. It will probably go on a student loan when i go to uni
- ralphsaunders
I thought you didn't have to pay it off till u started earning above a certain amoutn
- ralphsaunders
Gunther; until you want to update it; then you have to format. It's cool in theory, but it does not work. Every update breaks your OS. 10.5 is one download, 10.5.1 is one, and so on. you have to tailor the build for each version. doesn't work
- Jackson Pollock
walt they're going to talk about the diggbar next week
- Chris Heath
they give you a year... then if you earn above £15k you start paying it back. the more you earn the more you pay. I expect them to take out £90 from my salary this month
- Jamie
Although my prefered fields + a few others "User interface designers can make about $86,000 on average each year. Package designers can earn an average annual salary of $82,000." ... although idk if I want to do that full time yet
- ralphsaunders
Jackson: I just don't find him funny. He seems like a smart guy--he should try to do a serious show maybe.
- Eric Florenzano
Oh man, a TWiT meetup for Star Trek would be awesome.
- Eric Florenzano
He's of the Jim Carrey school of broadcasting. But people forget that Carrey is a standup, just being loud and screaming doesn't work
- Jackson Pollock
Plus the show is repeating right now, so it's appropriate
- Ken Sheppardson
This experiment prompted some feedback to Paul RE how they could make embedding easier.
- Ken Sheppardson
we're about to go mac mini system at home - would love to hear your tips - and ps love the dog's name - given that I'm an Aussie by choice - love ya leo
- Linda Johannesson
"A Saudi mother is expected to appeal a judge's ruling after he once again refused to let her 8-year-old daughter divorce a 47-year-old man, a relative said. Sheikh Habib Al-Habib made the ruling Saturday in the Saudi city of Onaiza. Late last year, he rejected a petition to annul the marriage."

This makes me so angry. That poor girl has been sold by her fuckhead of a father to a fucking paedophile who will be 'allowed' to rape her. Sickening.
- Bec Rowe @d0tski
8 year old? This is DEFINITELY not Islam. Also islam requires the woman's (the one to be married) acceptance. And again she's not a woman! She's a baby! :'(
- directeur
I know there's the whole "my culture is different from your culture" thing, but no 8 year old should be married to a 47 year old, ever.
- Rochelle
I really to believe that these are our allies in the War on Terror.
- Joseph Ferris
while revolting and disturbing, this may not be quite as bad as it sounds. "wife" doesn't always mean "sex partner." my understanding was also that the father could not financially support his daughter and that this girl's *shudder* husband could. but I haven't paid close attention to it.
- tiffany
Tiffany, the article states that the 'husband' has promised not to consummate the 'marriage' until she reaches puberty. She's got 1-5 years before she'll have to do her wifely duties.
- Bec Rowe @d0tski
yeah, i read that bec. my point is that if the family is destitute, the girl's father could see it as "this man can feed my child" not *just* "i'm selling my daughter's virginity to settle my debts." again: i don't know the details.
- tiffany
Jesse, hmmm...if there were to be a FriendFeed detention room/group...what would it be composed of? I suppose the most annoying components of 'social media' (for lack of a better term)...Britney tweets maybe? I know if there was Facebook detention room I would toss those darn quizzes in there..."so if you were a US President you would be John Adams huh? Imagine that..."
- Jeffrey Marsh
